Jan 30th surgery, new to the app
JessRose replied to JessRose's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yes they did give me one but I must have been confused when I left. The person who was supposed to give me discharge information and discussion was in a meeting when I was discharged so the nurse gave me a rundown and I thought I was on the stage 1 liquid diet for 8 days. Come to find out I was on stage 2 after 24 hrs which includes cream soups, sf pudding, yogurt, cottage cheese. I was so annoyed because I had been so fatigued and nauseas. I had "food" last night once I read over my booklet again and I'm feeling so much better. -
Thought I would lose weight faster- trying to stay positive
jenlen replied to wannabthin1's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Wannabthin, I had my sleeve surgery on 5/21, so about the same time as you. My pre surgery weigh-in was 289 (down 6 lbs from liquid diet) I lost 10 lbs my first week out and another 8 over the next few days. I stalled out at 271 and have been sitting here for over a week now. I am slowly increasing my cals ( from 250 up to 550) but am only getting 45-50 protein a day. I am not tolerating the protein powder and milk anymore so most of my protein is coming from the scrambled egg and plain yogurt mixed with tuna fish. I have been extremely worried about this stalling out too. It is encouraging to see that I am not the only one and that there may still be a light at the end of the tunnel. Anyone who has experienced this before who has tips to offer on how to get over this hump will be much appreciated. -
What types of protein are you using? There are non-fat greek yogurts, low fat cottage cheese as well as protein shakes/bars are usually a good source with lower amounts of fats. Chicken and Fish are the better meats to eat for high protein/lower fat.

Clear liquids vs. Full liquids
faithmd replied to jennyl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Can you see through yogurt or cottage cheese? Then it's not CLEAR. That having been said, two weeks of a clear liquid diet seems a bit crazy if that's all the guidlelines you have. The point of a pre-op diet is to lose weight and shrink the liver to make it easier to handle during surgery. If you are on a clear liquid diet (anything you can see through) and are drinking sugared fluids or eating sugared popsicles, I can imagine that you wouldn't lose much weight. Some docs will give guidelines of sugar free non-caffeinated, non-carbonated fluids, broths, sugar-free Jello and will add a Protein shake or two per day. I was on a very low calorie diet that included some Soups and three Protein drinks per day as Meal Replacements. Others do two Slimfasts and one Lean Cuisine per day. Still others may do Optifast. One surgeon does nothing but yogurt and cottage cheese (I think). Please call your dietician and ask for better direction about what you are supposed to be taking in. Nothing but clears for two weeks pre op (and how long post-op?) is beyond painful. -
How many calories...
Tufflaw replied to visionmom77's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Every morning for Breakfast I have two scrambled eggs with 1 oz of shredded cheese (about 270 calories). About an hour later I drink an 11 oz. Premier Protein drink (160 calories), then usually when I'm at work I have 16 oz Water after that. For lunch I've been mostly eating Shelly's Ricotta Bake which is amazing (about 200 calories)! (EDIT: It won't let me add the website for the recipe, just google Shelly's Ricotta Bake). If I don't have any portions left, I'll have tuna salad, chicken salad, egg salad, or turkey salad which is all homemade and pureed (calories vary). I usually have 4 oz and sometimes I'll put shredded cheese on top. dinner is more of the same, one of my pureed salads. Non-water drinks - either Powerade Zero or Diet Snapple. For Snacks, either Yoplait light yogurt (90 cal) or sugar free Jello pudding (60 cal) - today I had one after lunch and one after dinner. Or I might have one or two Sugar Free ice pops (15 cal each). I've had no problems getting my protein in and I never feel hungry. In fact the other night I overdid it with the egg salad, I tried 5 oz and felt uncomfortably full after, so I reeled it back to 4 oz. I've tried some seafood - I bought some flake crab meat from Aldi's and it was OK, not great. I might try again and made a seafood salad with it. I also got some Mahi Mahi from Trader Joe's and it was underwhelming. Very bland even though I made it with lemon juice and a bunch of spices. I have one piece left and may try a seafood salad with that one. Good luck! -
Anyone have such an easy time that it made you nervous? When does FULL feeling kick in?
LindafromFlorida replied to staceyp's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Stacey, Sounds like you are keeping a good plan going. I am 8 weeks post op. I measure nothing because I do not get hungry. Every doctor is different. Ours said "Eat Healthy". No guidelines after 4 weeks. So we are content to have a shake or 1 egg for Breakfast, a yogurt for lunch, and maybe some refried Beans for dinner with a wedge of Laughing Cow cheese melted on it. Makes my life simple. Sometimes I felt like I was not even sleeved, because I could drink so much without a problem. I personally feel the more I eat the more I will want to eat, so while I don't have these nagging stomach/hunger pains like I used to I am taking it easy. I still grab a SF popsicle when I feel it is head hunger. I had a bad experience with a small piece of chicken, so I did find out the hard way I was sleeved. We are all so different. Your plan sounds good and is working for you! Best of luck! -
Opinions in Genepro protein powder?
nonsenseprecious replied to Thinkingthinner1109's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I love it. I'm drinking a cup of tea with some mixed in it right now. I'm three weeks post-op and I had an awful time with Protein powders/shakes right after surgery, and this stuff has saved me. If I am eating something that is not a good source of protein, like applesauce or miso Soup, it's great, and it's equally great in foods that already contain protein. I have yet to taste it in anything I'd added it and it doesn't change the texture. I still try and go for foods that are naturally high in protein, but when you get to the point where you just can't eat more plain Greek yogurt or cottage cheese, this allows you to branch out while still getting protein. It's especially useful now, since I can't really eat enough yet to get those 80 grams. -
I also am eating good soups, soy pudding and soy and coconut yogurt.

Definitely consider seeing a therapist to figure out why you are snacking. on protein bars and granola. These sugary things really don't have a place in the post-op diet so soon after surgery. Go back to the information your surgery center provided you with. What does the diet look like? It should be protein (from lean meats, fish, eggs, tofu, cheese, light greek yogurt, etc - not protein bars which are basically candy) and some vegetables. Definitely not granola! And make sure you're getting all your water in; that can be a distraction when you want to snack.

Well I have just experienced bandster hell of another kind. I have been sick with a very sore throat and tired then my band tightened so much I was throwing up in my sleep. Horrible. I tried to just ride it out. I tried to eat softer foods and stop eating a couple of hours before bed. Oh, well, I feel better today. I had chills, aches and headache plus a sick, acidy stomach yesterday. The good news is that I have lost a couple more pounds. I am at 162 lbs this morning. I can't believe it. I am sooooo happy. I am aiming for size 12 or 150, not sure which. I'll see when it happens. I never thought I would ever get down to size 14 again and now it's getting loose. I have been buying new clothes and I am thinking about the shame of it when they don't fit and I will have hardly worn them. Oh well, I'll deal with it when it happens. I can actually buy size medium off the rack now and it fits. I am thrilled. Back to my band, I was thinking that my band must have slipped and I was going to call Slimband clinic this morning. My fill nurse, Nancy, told me that the band tightens when you are sick. I believe it. I feel better today and have had a piece of toast and a yogurt so I am fine. Thank goodness. So if I aim for 150 lbs, I have only 12 lbs left to lose. In 2 decades of dieting off and on, I never got to goal on any program before I started gaining again. Life is good!

On my way to my 1 week follow up, even though my surgery was actually last Friday. I have to say that I've got some seriously LOW energy. Since I sit on my booty all day at work, I'm glad I took most of this week off. I'm supposed to go back to work tomorrow, but think I will work from home. I just don't think I've got enough energy to get moving. I'm still not sleeping well because, wouldn't you know it, my siatic (sp?) nerve is starting to bug me when I go to sleep. Great timing for it to act up, huh? It makes for a heckuva sleepless night. I also don't think, never mind, I know I'm not getting enough protein in me. I've been feeling sooo full although I'm barely eating. I think I must be drinking too quickly. Trying to watch myself today because I start on soft foods. So far today, I've had 4 oz of a protein drink, and 1 oz of vanilla greek yogurt (with a dash of cinncamon for flavor). I'm waiting aobut 45 minutes before drinking anything again, but this schedule is tough. I planning ahead and bringing some of my snacks/meals with my 1st nutrition class & follow up apt so I don't miss out on anything (1oz of egg beaters & 1 oz of refried beans & something to drink). I know I've been losing weight because I've checked the scale. However, I try to be realistic because anyone would lose weight following a liquid diet. I don't expect miracles, but am thankful that I'm going in the right direction I still need to learn what my body is saying in the way of hunger vs the full feeling. The last few days it's always felt "full" which is insane beacuse I'm not eating much of anything. Nonetheless, today's nutrition class should be informative, and I look forward to it. Gonna go have my crystal light now. I'm thirsty.

TammyDTM replied to LisaPunkinHead's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@LisaPunkinHead Maybe some "softer" foods would be best. Yogurt, soft scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, mashed banana, mashed potatoes, etc. And don't eat more that 1/4 cup of anything. That's what I was told anyway. -
i was in the same position. I had rny on 4/16. I weighed 300 starting out and stalled 2 months out just under the 50lb mark. I yo-yo'd between 252 and 256 losing and gaining the same weight for 4 weeks. Today I finally broke through to 249 after weighing 252 yesterday. Finally hit my 50lb goal! I started stalling right after I started my exercise program. I don't know if I can call it an official stall because I believe I lost inches; although, I did not measure. I have had a cold for the last few days, so I am not sure if that had anything to do with my weight loss. I have continued to monitor my food intake and exercise on my fitness pal. I have added more Protein to my diet by eating every 2-3 hours. Before I only ate the three meals and a Protein shake. This met my requirement of 60-80 grams of protein a day. I consume more protein now with the two Snacks being either a piece of chicken or a greek yogurt. I hope to see the scale continue to move down.

Odaisy, When you say a shake has 20 + grams of Protein, how many ounces are you talking about? I have started drinking the Naked protein shakes and 10 grams is for 8 oz. Tiff, chicken has been very difficult for me to handle since the surg. I do like your idea of adding yogurt though. I may just try that. Do you actually weigh your meat or are you eyeballing it? If you are weighing it, is that raw or cooked? I also like your suggestion of eating 15 grams 4 times p day. Is 60 grams what you shoot for? We do not have a cosco anywhere around me. I did pretty good today. I have had 60 + grams. I have pretty much had to eat all day though. I really do not want to eat if I am not hungry. That is a habit I am trying to break. Today = 2 protein shakes = 20 pr bar = 10 2 string cheeses = 12 2 slices ham w cheese rolled up inside = 16 cheese nips = 2______ 50 GRAMS Then I had a piece of fried venison = ? butterbeans = 6 So I would say I got at least 60 grams!!! WOO Hoo~!

I shoot for 60grams of Protein, and now can get in over 100grams. For the chicken, I have a recipe for chicken wings in the crock pot. They are so tender and juicy, it literally just melts in your mouth if you'd like me to share with you. If you can't do chicken, try canned tuna, crab or salmon for protein dense foods. My stomach holds by volume. I used those little medication measuring cups early out until I could eyeball a portion. Weighing food never made sense to me since our tummies hold food by volume and not weight. Food is always cooked for my measurements. I know some food will measure by volume the same as it does by weight, but others will be totally off. 3oz of chicken has about 21gr of protein so I shot for 3oz of chicken for most meals early out. If you can't do 3oz of meat, try adding a soft cheese (most have 2-6gr of protein), or greek yogurt to the mix to help max out protein grams. If you have a crock pot, have you tried dumping a frozen chicken breast or a couple of thighs in there with a can of cream of "whatever you like" Soup, and then shred the chicken. Cook it low and slow for about 6-8 hours, and you might have better luck with chicken that way. I also throw round steak in the crock pot with cream of Soups, and let it cook low and slow until it's super tender. Here's a recipe I found tonight, and it is deliciously wonderful. Spinach beef hot dish Beef Spinach Hot Dish Recipe - Allrecipes.com I added a bunch of minced garlic, and Worchestershire sauce to the meat while browning it. 1 can of cream of mushroom 98% reduced fat soup 1 package of frozen spinach 1 (8oz) package of non-fat cream cheese Brown the meat, drain Add the spinach, stir until mixed well and all liquid evaporates Add the soup Add the cream cheese Stir in skillet until mixed well Transferred to a 9x9 casserole pan sprayed with Pam. Baked in the oven at 400 degrees for 20 minutes. I added several heavy handed dashes of Season All No salt, and 1/4 tsp of ground cayenne pepper to the mixture before tossing it in the oven. I'll serve it to the guys in the house over no yolk egg noodles, and I'm eating it by itself no noodles tonight for me. I've also served it with mashed potatoes and long grain rice. It's a staple in our home. I've also made it with ground turkey, and the guys didn't know it wasn't ground beef. This recipe freezes very well, and tastes really great a couple of weeks later. It does make a large amount with just 1 package of spinach.

Please Help...i Dont Know How To Adapt...!!!:-/
Ladybug28 replied to beverlaay7's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm surprised your doctor didn't tell you about the Protein. You want to be sure to get that, for one thing you don't want your hair falling out, but it really helps with the hunger. I drink a lot of Atkins ready to drink, and I also have Body Fortress powder from Walmart to mix my own. The broth I drank was from unjury.com, mixes well and tastes yummy and 20gram of protein per cup! Right now you're in the healing stage so don't worry or focus too much on the weight loss. My doctor also allowed greek yogurt, runny cream of wheat, and surgar free pudding. Remember work to get a minmum of 60 gram and aim for 100 gr of protein a day. Everyone is so different but I found that where I use to go daily I now only go every other day. There's just not enough food going through our system like before. Your system will adjust before long, Enjoy not being constipated! lol. If I haven't gone by the end of the second day I take a teaspon of MOM. Hang in there....enjoy the journey and good luck to you! Deb -
Ashanti, I started mushi as well already. I tried Mash potatoes, creamy Soups, yogurt, and cottage chese. It went down fine. I do feel restriction between 4-6 oz though. What about you? I get this pinch or a bit of a pain in my chest and I stop!

Retraining your brain does anyone understand it
lyladyp replied to BlueAngelEyes's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Great post! I had to laugh at you referencing how the sleeve was discovered by sheer accident- so true! @BlueAngelEyes After finding this page, I did not realize the variation in each doctor's before/after surgery orders are. My husband had the sleeve a few years ago and he was on liquids for six weeks, then allowed to pureed/soft foods for a month and then transition into full eating. I went through a different practice and I was only on full liquids for about 7 days, then 10 days of soft/pureed and next eating whatever agrees with my system. I do not think there is one right way, but the doctors are following the guidelines that they believe work. I for one was hungry literally by the end of my first week. I was over the liquid shakes and think I demolished a box of sugar-free Popsicles in a couple of days. I looked forward to eggs, yogurt and cottage cheese but honestly was tired of that after a couple of days. I would advise that you contact your doctor or dietitian before moving along because you want to ensure that your body can actually tolerate the foods that you want to consume. So far the only meat protein that I have been able to tolerate without feeling sick are eggs, pork chops and flounder (after trying chicken, salmon, small portions of beef and lamb). This is definitely not a fun process, but you want to make sure you are prepared mentally as well as physically before moving on. I wish you the best! -
Hello everyone!!!! Im new to this forum even though I have been reading some of the topics before and after my surgery but today just decided to finally join and be part of the group Well My story is im a 25 year old single mom and back in December of 2013 I had the Lap Band surgery at my all time weight of 265 lb , by November of 2014 i had dropped to a low of 215 but there were some issues with the band and the doctor had to remove almost all the liquid and well with the holidays that made me gain almost 20-30 pounds easily. By this past summer I went to go get my band tightened but it had moved so much it was no longer accessible so my doctor suggested to get the Gastric Sleeve after removing my band. By this time I was back up to 240 lb Thankfully my insurance was quick to approve the surgery and had by surgery a week ago on September 23. Surgery weight was 233 and today im at 224 lb. Is this a normal weight loss? Is it too quick, too slow?! I left the hospital 1 day post op, not much pain, ive only had to take the liquid tylenol I was prescribed, nothing stronger. I do get weak and tired after walking around. Ive been able to go to the grocery stores and the mall for a bit but not too long (My poor toddler was getting cabin fever LOL) . My doctor did send me home on a full liquid/puree diet. I feel like that just so advanced compared to most who stay on a full liquid for a few weeks. Obviously I can only eat 3 or so spoonfuls before getting full. I mostly eat yogurt, crystal light, eas shakes and drink as much Water as I can. Today was my first day back at work, but my job was aware I would have to work sitting down and not usually on my feet all day like im use to, they've been great!! Well I am glad to be on this forum and get to know you all and your stories. I hope that this time around I can loose the weight and keep it off! My goal is really 180 but my doctor said I could get down to 155 lb. The day I step on the scale and im in the 100s I will literally cry and then have a party! HAHA!! Good luck to you all! PS- What has been your normal weight loss post op, like for 1 week-1 month? Thanks guys!

What is your daily menu/meal plan
1poundatatime replied to chrissyliezl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved 2 days after you. I've been having: Breakfast: 6oz shake (18gm protein) Snack: 6oz shake (18 gm protein) Lunch: 8oz cream soup of some sort Snack: 5oz total greek yogurt thinned with almond milk (8-11 gm protein) Dinner: 8oz cream soup Snack: 6oz shake (18 gm protein) And sipping 48 oz of water throughout the day. Sometimes I splurge and have a popsicle or a little bit of kefir.
