  1. I've been a vegetarian for years and recently went vegan. It has truly helped with some of my medical issues. I had lap band surgery 2.5 years ago and am doing a sleeve conversion on July 29th. My pre-op diet starts today and need some help with a vegan plan. Any suggestions?

    Normal foods

I think most people I've read about on here say they waited 2 -3 months out, some can tolerate it sooner, some people on here frown upon salads since it doesn't provide enough protein etc. but there are very successful vegetarians on here who gave no problems getting their protein and other nutrients in, I would say wait until you can tolerate all the raw veggies but just to make sure ask your nutritionist, they may not give you the answer you want though, good luck

    Vegetarian?

Just wondering if there are any vegetarians here? Or if it's even possible to be vegetarian and get all of the needed protein and nutrients with lap band. I'm just kind of exploring the idea for various different reasons.
  4. Most people try to keep carbs at 50 or lower. Most doctor's recommend at least 60gms of Protein. My carbs run higher because I'm vegetarian so a lot of my plant base Proteins contain carbs. My carbs run in the 50 - 70 range. I also find I lose better when my protein is at least 75gms or higher @@MoJo119 are you tracking your food? The only way I figured out what works for me was by examining my food log.
  5. I'm 8 months post -op with good restriction but I can eat pretty much whatever I like. Sometimes chicken and tough meats are a little hard on me so for awhile I was pretty much doing vegetarian. Sometimes I juice, it really just depends on what I feel like for that day. I still do protein shakes regularly to get my protein in! I have a strawberry mousse Syntrax one in the freezer right now getting cold. I love my shakes. They are easier on my stomach.
  6. Thanks for the replies. I think I'll take this q to my dietition and surgeon next time I meet them, as I feel there may be even a few more variables to add into this equation. I'm vegetarian, and as such my Protein digests a lot faster than meats - this gives me the feeling of being 'hungry' a lot quicker than if i ate a more round and 'meaty' diet. Please don't think im trying to find my way around anything - im all for changing habits, but if there are no significant medical risks with 1 or two sips of Fluid before eating, then my next 60 years on this earth are going to be eternally more enjoyable .

  8. Hi everyone. My op was nearly 4 weeks ago, and I've had no problems whatsoever. I've noticed that the rate of weight loss has started to stall a bit, but have been told this is normal. I'm comfortably eating softs and have just started on some more substantial vegetarian Proteins and solids. My question however, is in regards to the restriction on no liquids before, during, or after meals. Now, I'll start by saying I don't drink alcohol at all. I've also no had a single carbonated drink since my pre-op diet, and to be honest I'm not missing them. My Fluid of choice is usually an ice cold, slightly weak diet-cordial. I have noticed however, just how much I enjoyed having a cordial with my meals. Before my op, I'd neck a glass before sitting at the table and then consume another glass whilst eating. Obviously, I'm not doing either now, but I find post op that I'm getting quite a dry mouth and would love nothing more than 1/2 sips of fluid before attempting to eat. I'm aware that the risks of drinking is that it encourages the stomach to stretch - but is this still an issue with all fluids (aka. 1/2 sips of cordial/water)? Or does it apply to excess drinking/eating/drinking/eating with the aim of getting more in? Thanks for your time and replies

    No Wonder I Wasn’t Skinny!

Same at my house... and we were vegetarians on top of that! My brother and I asked for Twinkies for Christmas one year. My downfall was in college where I discovered Ben and Jerry's and fried chicken strips!

    June Sleevers!

First let's clear things up, you have always looked great, and the other thingy is temporary, you need to look for alternatives for awhile, tuna canned chicken etc... , I've read also from some of the veteran peeps in here that vegetarian is possible but a little hard at first since your vitamins and proteins will have to come from tablets and powder shakes, as the weeks go by your senses will vary and change,y nose can pick up on little things I never noticed before, as do my tastebuds, I find McDonalds disgusting in taste and smell, I've also acquired new skills like grilling and my latest passion Stir Frying, I made a Stir Fry Cashew Chicken last nite and it was awesome, I love my Wok, try new things, maybe go to deli meats and cheeses for awhile, I love Pastrami now, and also eat Cashews, I heard that for some peeps they acquire a strange taste for things like Spam, and even potted meats, stay strong and hang in there, I had my moment on the 4th of July where I was strongly craving of all things a Dos XX dressed up, I wasn't even craving the meats or sausages, might also wanna try some egg drop soup or hot and sour soup, don't give up you've come a long way, I went to my PCP last Thursday and she said I was at 322lbs, I didn't even think I would get close to 299 til December so I'm excited, I began my journey even before my fist appointment in April, I was at 388 in December, and in April at 362.2lbs so I'm -64lbs already and today I fit into a size 52 shorts that 8 waist sizes, I'm also at the gym in Beast mode and people are seeing definition, I think I'm addicted to this crap......lol see if this floats your bubble ⬇️

    Can't stand to eat meat!

Not abnormal at all. Lots of vegan and vegetarian folks feel this way. Also shrimp and lobsters look too much like giant cockroaches to me. They are all scavengers.

    Can't stand to eat meat!

To be honest I also get that visual image of the skin and veins and such. The thought of eating animal flesh grosses me out as well, but I don't mention it often since it tends to offend omni eaters. Following a vegetarian diet takes a little creativity, but it's actually not that difficult for me. This was really important for me when I initially started investigating WLS. My diet consist of plant based Proteins and dairy. A vegan diet would be more challenging so for now I am sticking with vegetarianism. I hope to transition to vegan once I achieve a normal BMI.

    Can't stand to eat meat!

I'm vegetarian and allergic to seafood. Don't like meat? Don't eat it. I do eat a lot of eggs and greek yogurt, but I've done quite well not eating any meat at all.
  14. I took time to read through this thread before posting. I'll say this as someone who still has a long way to go; when your starting weight is over 300lbs the rules are different. Sure some can make goal within a year, but for many of us that's not realistic. I started at over 400 lbs. I've been losing steadily but except for the big drop within the first 2 weeks, I can't say I'm losing particularly fast. On average I lose about 10lbs a month. I have severe allergies and some other ongoing, non-weight related health issues. I am menopausal. When I started this I knew that any changes I made were going to be for LIFE! I also fully expect this to take at least 2 years. I remind myself of those 2 facts every day and work at it each and every day. I'm not worried about the past, or being super thin. I want to have a normal BMI and I want to be under 200lbs. I don't compare myself or my progress to any one on this list or in my support group. If I feel tempted to, I log off of this board for a few days and focus solely on me. I think it's a good idea to meet with a nutritionist. I think it's important to not only be told what you should or shouldn't eating, but why. Having an understanding of things like complex vs simple carbs, natural vs artificial sugars and sweeteners, healthy fats vs bad fats has made a big difference in how I plan my meals and choose what foods I can have. Those are things that might be helpful in your discussion with the nutritionist. It took more than 2 years to gain the weight, it's honestly not unreasonable that it takes 2 years to lose it. I am on MFP as Milaxx. Feel free to send me a friend request. I share my diary with friends and try to be supportive. I am vegetarian. Between that and my food allergies, my eating is a bit different than most. I eat a lot of yogurt and eggs, but I also eat other things. I wish you success in whatever you do.

    June 2015 sleevers

Hi there. This is my first post here, but wanted to register because I was sleeved on June 16th, Everything has gone super-smoothly and despite starting to feel increasingly hungry (im a vegetarian too), I'm pretty pleased with the initial results. I'm a 28yo male, with some spinal problems and two children with a third on the way, so decided to have the surgery to increase my personal health, and family life. I started at 294lbs and now 3 weeks after op I'm sitting at 247lbs. Got a fair way still to go, but am starting to eat soft foods now so hope it continues to come off.

Where have you looked so far? That way we don't duplicate anything. You can always google for bariatric and vegan or vegetarian. Dr. Garth Davis would be a good one to follow.

The WLS Cookbook for Dummies lists the following vegetarian recipes: fresh spinach salad with roasted corn, garlic and herb tofu salad, tabbouleh with avocado, smoked gouda stuffed peppers, tofu mexi-corn quiche, easy cheesy navy bean bake, hearty moussaka with beans, portobello burger, and black bean veggie burger. There is also a vegetable side dish section. I assume that you can not eat some of these due to the food phase that you're in but let me know if you want any of the full recipes. I'll copy and send them to you.

    Sleeve cookbook?

I purchased the Weight Loss Surgery Cookbook for Dummies and so far I'm enjoying reading it. There are recipes for the smooth phase, soft phase, breakfasts, lunches & brunches, appetizers, poultry, beef, lamb, pork, fish, seafood and vegetarian entrees Entrees, as well as side dishes, Soups & stews, Snacks, smoothies and Desserts. I have not made any of the dishes mainly because I want to read the book first and then try the recipes that sound the best. Good luck finding what you want.

My name is Briana and I'm new here. I've been having some hard time coming up with vegetarian recipes that don't hurt my pouch. I had roux en y on March 16,2015
  22. I am also mostly vegetarian (I do eat some fish.) I am one year out and have 60 pounds but am not yet at my personal goal of 155, which I think would be size 12 in clothes. I lost almost nothing from months 6-10 but then I gave myself a big kick in the butt and have been able to start losing again by eliminating all sweets and walking 3-4 miles every day. Now I am losing about half a pound per week- slower than I would like for sure but steady enough to help keep my motivation high. The no sweets really is a key for me because my sugar addiction is fierce and as soon as I have a little having more is all I can think about.

Greek yogurt pureed with sugar free jam or sugar free vanilla ice cream pureed with your favorite flavored Protein Powder, then I refreeze it for an hour. I use Matrix PB - tastes like yummy Peanut Butter ice cream. Refried Beans with grated cheese (melted). I have had Rosa's (if you have one near you, but don't know if they are vegetarian, I've read Taco's Bell's is.) I also have a recipe for refried beans I am going to try. I also have hummus on my list with unflavored protein powder. Haven't tried that yet.
  24. So after a long complicated journey......to be found somewhere in my past posts, I have concerns that I might have some scarring/stenosis or hiatal hernia. I have major fullness after one bite, bloating pain and that darn nausea! I take Protonix, Probiotics and Anzamet for nausea. Also Luvox, gabapentin and Klonapin. Plus, I never recovered from the fatigue. I had a jejujostomy for about 14 months or so....due to malnutrition. I am a home health nurse - while I finish up grad school, so I can set my own schedule since I cannot work full time due to my symptoms. I am afraid I am malnourished again (or still). I went off grains and lost 8lbs which is good cuz I was doing sliding food, so I gained a bit, but not anything terrible. I eat only egg whites with cheese in the am, and that is so I can take my morning meds, otherwise I get sick on an empty stomach. I really don't eat much else..maybe 2 bites of dinner (vegetarian for 30 years). I have the right Protein powder, a new one for GI health and I cannot even get those down. I should be well below my goal weight - I know I do not take in enough calories. I think my body is in starvation mode and is holding on to whatever it gets. Anyway, my big fear is going back to my doctor. My PCP vs my surgeon? Not my GI doctor b/c he will refer me back to someone else. So I guess I better email my surgeon.....here we go again. I just want to feel good. not tired. FYI - I see a therapist 2x/month - so that is helping the emotional part. Any feedback? Thanks.
  25. @@feedyoureye I love that your hobby is making fake meat!! I chuckled a little when I read it. I am a carnivore, so I never heard about fake meat, and that statement caught my attention. I am sure that if I were vegetarian I'd also be making fake meat @@deedeemuffin You have had a significant success, so congratulations! I'm also two and a half years out, and also not really at goal, and maintaining for well over a year. I have vacillated between trying harder to get there and being happy with where I am. It's definitely harder, the further out you are. I average about 1450 calories a day to maintain this weight, and frankly, it seems like a good weight for me, and I can't/won't eat the 900 calories/day it would require to lose more. I was fat for a reason - in addition to eating too much, my body does not want to be rail thin. So I've had to adjust my goals and my mindset. I was really determined to get to "GOAL", a somewhat arbitrary number I chose based on BMI charts. When I realized the amount of effort it would require for absolutely no improvement in any aspect of my life, I started to accept that maybe I'm good enough where I am. I haven't adjusted my ticker yet, (not sure why, I guess I haven't reached full acceptance that this is it), but I don't spend a lot of energy fretting about it. You've achieved a significant goal. You know why you are at the weight you are, as do I. You still have the power - work harder to achieve whatever weight loss goal you have, or change your goal.
