    Weight loss stall

Google the "3 week stall". It's normal.
  2. The weight gain from IV and swelling, Water retention are pretty obvious things with any procedure. The 3 week stall, while unexplained I think it's the bodies why of responding like WTF just happened?

    Stalls-Please share your experiences

Your questions are long and over thinking something that is pretty simple. Most long term successful people don't care about stalls and don't focus on them, so expect a lot of newbie responses that are going to be basically useless. My weight loss has gone in different stages. At first I lost every day or every other day. Besides the 3 week stall, no stalls until 5 months. I stall at significant numbers. My body is trying to defend it's set point, eventually as long as I keep doing the same thing, my body has to give up and lose. I was over 300 pounds for 18 years. When I got under 300 I stalled in the 290s gaining and losing for a month. Then boom huge weight loss and I was basically 275 in a couple weeks. Then at 250ish I stalled out and kept gaining and losing then I was 240. Same at 230. I was stuck at 220 for 2 months and I maybe it was over, then I lost 12 pounds in a week. Then I slowly lost 10 pounds over like 4 weeks. Now I am stuck at 199. I know it is a stupid pointless stall and I expect when it is over to wake up 195 or 194 or something one day. Because I am still shrinking. I lost like 5 inches totally off my upper torso in 2 weeks but stayed the same weight so I know the weight is coming off. Stalls for me, mean losing inches, lots of inches. I used to stress about them but by the 9 month mark I realized how they worked and I don't care that much any more. It is just an annoyance. Now I also stall a lot because I do not take any kind of hormonal birth control. I have a non hormonal IUD. For most of 2016, I have had a period every 2 to 3 weeks so those make up a lot of my stalls. Weighing myself everyday at the exact same time (wake up, urinate, weigh) has allowed me to better understand my weight fluctuations. At 16 almost 17 months, I don't care about stalls. If you want to properly track your loss measure every week and track it in a spreadsheet along with the scale. I am also a big fan of regular quarterly DEXA scans. I broke a stall this summer playing pokemon. I walked 20 miles in like a 48 hour time period and broke a stall. That was accidental not on purpose. When I got tired of being stuck at 220, I did a fat fast to drop weight. I eat Keto normally, and a fat fast is something people on keto do to break a stall. If I stay at 199 another week, I might try it again. The only reason I want to rush a drop is because I want to have plastics late summer, early fall and I need to get to a 30/31 bmi and hold it ASAP.

This topic is so relevant to my situation right now. I mentioned previously that I stalled for 3 weeks 5, 6, 7 and broke it by adding in calories and Protein through scheduled Snacks because I wasn't meeting the 600 cals and 60 protein gms minimum. Followed advice of more experienced folks on forum and I dropped 15.5 pounds in about 1-1/2 weeks. Then had post op meeting with PA and she said dont' snack. Only 3 meals a day. Well, tried that. Finally figured out how to meet protein minimum with 3 meals and still went into another almost 3 week stall, then just lost 9 pounds in 10 days when I went against orders and added in protein snack or two if necessary. Another postop yesterday. Talked to PA about my worry about not getting enough nutrition with 450-550 cals a day. I'm eating mostly lean protein to get those 60 grams of protein in through 3 meals and no snacks. So she got back to me today with doctor's message: no protein snacking, 3 meals a day, get in Proteins, don't go over carb limit (60 carbs -- I rarely get to 30) or fat limit (30- stay under that too). Dr. said don't worry about calories; just get in protein and Water (only water counts as liquid, btw; Protein shakes, tea, etc. don't count). I think he must be more conservative than many of the doctors you all see, but he's very experienced and successful. I'm going to follow his instructions and not add a protein snack or two to get 600 calories. We'll see where it gets me this month. Won't worry about calories. If I stall, I'll see if it will break following his instructions. It's been a bit frustrating not losing more month 3 considering my high weight at the outset, but maybe this is just going to be my way of losing, i.e., lose, stall, lose, stall. I seem to remember Oregon Daisy saying something about her weight loss being full of stalls.
  6. I am glad I found this forum. I also hit the infamous 3 week stall right around week 3 lol. I am going on week 4 and the lbs are starting to fall off again but not near as fast as before. Now that I know this is normal I am not as concerned. Thank you all!
  7. I've been reading these forums for years but I am so desperate, I am finally posting. In 2012 I had the lapband- went from 290-250 and stayed there within 3-4 lbs for most of the years I had band. I had band port replaced due to puncture and then when it slipped in 2015 causing an obstruction I decided on conversion to sleeve. I went back up to 278 in the 6 months between band deflation and getting the sleeve. Got sleeve mid-January 2016. Within first 2 1/2 weeks I got down to 258, 20 lbs (a lot of it was probably water but still, great!) Hit the dreaded 3 week stall but continued to follow all the rules and be patient. Now I am at week 9 and am still just fluctuating in the low 250's but I have lost only about 4 lbs in the past 6 weeks! I started measuring inches in the past two weeks but nothing noticible there either. I've heard of this long of a stall happening but usually further out after more weight loss to begin with. About a month ago I started tracking everything religiously in my fitness pal and on fitbit. I aim for around 650 calories a day (sometimes when I work out really hard, I eat something after the gym just to be able to drive home safe, brining it to around 750-800 calories per day.) I always get at least 65g protein, low-carb, low sugar. etc. My fitbit average steps per day is 13,000 which includes the gym 3-4 times a week. My apps had me at around -22,000 calories for last week and nothing at all!! I keep waiting for the stall to break but I feel like my spirit is breaking instead. Other things: I started having super frequent periods since the surgery, like 5 days on 10 days off, repeat. My primary care was puzzled and tested thyroid which is fine (thank god!) I also take a very small daily does of prozac a day 20mg. Could med be the reason I am not loosing? I see my surgeon and nutritionst in 1 1/2 weeks. I am scared that they will either think I am cheating because it seems so unusual or just say "some people don't loose the weight." Any ideas are greatly appriciated. This doesn't seem like the other stalls I've been reading about. I'm scared because I've gotten to this weight a bunch of times as an adult on atikins, weight watchers, lap-band, etc but never lower. I feel like I am failing at yet another attempt to loose weight.

    Not losing :(

Ok. First ((hugs)). Second. Let's have a reality lesson and do some math. If you are watching my 600lb Life, turn it the fuc* off! Seriously. Very few of us will lose 25-50lbs a month--even if you weigh over 300lbs. We just won't! There is no quick, overnight way (short of amputation), to get below 200lbs overnight. So settle back and establish your very own "best practices." Third. 37lbs in 9 weeks is what you are describing to me. So let's take 37lbs and divide by 9. You are losing 4.11lbs/week. PLUS there is always a "3 week stall" post surgery that can come on any time between week 2 and week 6-8. It can last 1-2 weeks. My RD told me I will lose between 2-3lbs per week at the start. It will slow as I approach goal. She said, expecting anything more than that sets us up for disappointment, disillusionment, and dissatisfaction/depression. She told me to ALWAYS follow the rules for my food stage: water/hydration/vitamins as scheduled for each day; and low fat protein first at every meal. If there is room, a bite or two of low carb veggies. If more room, then a bite or two of low carb fruit. Eat 3 meals and 2-3 scheduled snacks a day until you can eat enough at each meal to only eat 3 meals without over-stuffing your new anatomy. No drinking with meals or for 45 minutes after meals. Fourth. Track every bite lick and taste that goes down your piehole. Religiously weigh and measure and track!!! Don't cheat yourself. A bite eaten in the dark, standing up over your sink in the middle of the night STILL counts! She promised me if I did that, I would lose the weight. But if you have any doubts, go see your PCP about a low thyroid and also have them test for your B1 levels. Many of us obese and WLS patients have low B1 and it makes all the difference!!!

    one month post op

The first month has the infamous 3 week stall averaged in....and it can ruin your average. Next month will be better. Don't panic. Stick to your program.

5 weeks post op weight gain

Not to ask for TMI but you may be experiencing some constipation. Our bodies can hold like 8 lbs of waste and if you just started eating solid foods, that could be the reason. Keep up your Fluid intake and things will move along including the needle on the scale. Oh, also search around this site for the "dreaded 3 week stall". That should at least alleviate any fears you have about this because it's perfectly normal and almost everyone goes through it.
  11. I have around 100 lbs to lose and have lost 46.5 lbs in just 3 1/2 months. I am just rounding the corner where I have really good restriction where the weight will be coming off more consistently. I have had 2-3 week stalls in just this time period which is frustrating but I know it will eventually kick in again and it has. I am on my third fill and am getting great restriction and am feeling very confident in the rest coming off. My sister has had the band for just 3 months and she has lost 53 lbs. Just another example for you that if you work at it, you will succeed at this. Good luck in your journey!!!
  12. @@Westfield27 update your ticker!!! awesome work. I am 8 days out. down 14 pounds. crazy ride. brace yourself for the 3 week stall. good luck on the rest of your journey
  13. You want a conversation? Okay, here it is. What you are going through is completely normal. 99% of us went through it. It's called the "Dreaded 3 Week Stall". No, you're not failing. No, you're not doomed. No, you're not doing anything wrong. It's physiological. In laymen's terms, your body just takes a break after the rapid weight loss to adjust. Expect to completely stop losing here soon. It may last a week, or it may last several. Hard to say. Not much you can do about this particular stall except ride it out. Once it's over, expect to start losing at a more "normal" pace of 2-4 pounds a week. And yes, you will probably stall again. And again. And go up a pound or even 2. Then lose it again. Then go back up 1. Then lose 3. It's all just part of the normal fluctuations our bodies do. You'll get used to it over time. Now, here comes the science: A "stall" a few weeks after surgery is not uncommon, and here's why. Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs. of Water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when a patient is not getting in enough food, the body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. Then when 2 lbs. of glycogen is used a patient will also lose 8 lbs. of water that was used to store it -- voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs. that most people lose in the first week of a diet. However, when the body stays in a caloric deficit state the body starts to realize that this is not a short-term problem. Then the body starts mobilizing fat from adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But the body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. As it puts back the 2 lbs. of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs. of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though the patient might still be losing energy content to their body, the weight will not go down or it might even gain for a while as the retention of water dissolves the glycogen that is being reformed and stored.

    Low BMIers

Just got sleeved with Dr Garcia at Tijuana Bariatrics 1/17/17. I was just barely at 30 BMI. I've lost 13 pounds since surgery. I just hit the 3 week stall everyone talks about. Same weight for 3 days, down 0.3 lb today. I lost 5 inches off my waist already. Too soon to give you much info. I am very pleased with the experience. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  15. I had my 1 month visit yesterday and only lost 3 lbs since my 2 week visit. He told me I was doing great. I told him that the 3 lbs is since the begining of week 3 and he told me about the 3 week stall. I started laughing becuase of course I have READ ALL ABOUT IT! Like everyone said if you are doing low carb you need to up your fat. I have problems with fat so I am doing low fat with more carbs. Mind you that there are two things that I refuse to compromise on when I do do fat and that is butter and mayo. everything else i can live with. That is great about the diabeties. I too have stopped taking my meds for that. Since I started on the mushies and there are more carbs in it, I have had to start a 1/2 dose of the glipizide, but thats ok too because I am on the softs now and its all about the protein. So I expect that to go away again too. Your doc is a jerk to make you feel like that. Just saying. Keep up the great work!
  16. First, don't compare yourself to others (but FYI, I lost nothing the first week and a half and it took me 3 months to lose 30 pounds. I was thrilled. I considered myself lucky because losing slowly is much healthier) Second, you are losing so whats the problem Three, you are approaching the famous 3 week stall so you may not lose anything for a couple weeks. It's normal. Fourth, this surgery is meant to be a lifetime commitment, not a race to see how fast you can take off the weight it took years (or decades) to put on. Your goal should be eating healthy and establishing new habits, not watching numbers. I suggest staying off the scale for 1-2 months. Measure your progress with NSV's rather than meaningless numbers on the scale. I don't even own a scale at only weighed at the doctor's office for the first couple months. You are adding unnecessary stress to your life by worrying about these things. Just get in all your Protein, Water and Vitamins, and trust the process.
  17. How many of you have suffered from this? And how long did it last for you? I'm dealing with it now and it's driving me mental. I'm trying to stay positive, I just thought maybe hearing other people's stories may help!

    Three week stall?

it is quite common. if you go in the search bar and type in 3 week stall - you'll see tons of posts about it.
  19. This is for those who have lost more than the weight required to hit the top of the “normal” BMI (I know - BMI is awful - but it’s a measurement that everyone is aware of). I hit the top of my normal BMI by 6 months post-op and have lost more since then (which I wanted to). I did not have any stalls until I got down a few lbs below the top normal BMI. I had selected 145 as my original goal because that was the lowest weight I ever achieved as an adult (through weight watchers) but have since adjusted to 135 (and quite frankly, feel like with my belly I could even adjust lower, although I think plastic surgery will be needed to really get things where I want). However, it’s been discouraging as I’ve definitely been dealing with 2-3 week stalls now - then lose for a week or two then repeat. I had a stall since the beginning of the month and then yesterday when I did my weigh-in I was down almost 4 lbs! Now, 3.75 lbs seems like a LOT to lose in a week at this point - not time wise as I am only 8.5 months out but given where my weight is - haven’t lost that much in a week in a while (and while I normally only weigh weekly I did check it again this morning to ensure that it was a real loss and it was). For those who have gotten below the top normal BMI, how was the weight loss once you got past that top normal BMI? Was kind of expecting only to lose a couple of lbs a month from here on out but seems like that may be a low guess? Just trying to get an idea mostly from a mental perspective - as I said, the stalls have been discouraging, although I know I was fortunate not to have a single one until I got below the normal BMI. I had a couple of weeks in the 3-5 month range where I only lost .5-.75 lbs but none where the scale didn’t budge like it has a few times lately.
  20. I've lost a similar weight to you in roughly the same time span. I did lose more post op than pre op though, 7kgs vs 10kgs. In the infamous 3 week stall now. Plus I'm backed up and working on fixing that issue. Taking a break from the scales. You need to be patient. This isn't the 100 metre sprint, it's an ultra marathon. If you do a bit of googling you'll see that the first 6 weeks isn't a time to expect anything much. You're body is adjusting to its new way of life. Hang in there, I'd anticipate you'll have weeks of great losses given you're starting a bit higher. It will come off nice and steady. Join our May Surgery thread, we're all there for each other.

    6 weeks post Sleeve surgery

Look at it this way, you have lost 25 lbs total. It is most likely fluids. Don't obsess over the scale too much. I am about 10 months out and have had 3 week stalls, i gained 5 lbs one week, then lost 8 lbs and gained 3 the next. Try to keep a mindset that it is a life long journey. We didn't gain this weight overnight and we can't lose 8t overnight either. Work on developing good habits to replace the bad ones that caused us to gain the weight.

Where are all the august people

Hi all! I am new to the group and excited to go through this journey. I had my surgery on Aug 27 and go for my 4-week follow up in two days. My Pre-op I was at 268, day of surgery I was 262 and today I am 239.8. Last week was a struggle as I had severe nausea and couldn't get a whole lot in, including protein. This past weekend I became more tolerable of things and this week is starting off great! Last week, I stalled, probably the notorious 3-week stall and the lack of calories. However, things seem to be moving right along now.
  23. Everyone is different in the way they loose weight. Men on the whole, tend to loose quicker than women. You are doing really great with the weight loss and getting your protein and liquids in to you so well. The weight loss will slow down as you begin to eat more normal foods but then your restriction will kick in to keep you honest. After a while the hunger comes back and that's when all we have learned will be needed to keep us on track. Enjoy this honeymoon period you are in, be ready for the 3 week stall.
  24. Hi! Is there anything you guys suggest to be successful after WLS? I really want to lose 85% of my excess weight, which is higher than the average loss from VSG. I was wondering if anyone here can give me a list of things to aid in my success. Not just the basics: fallow your plan, don't eat a lot of carbs, drink water and exercise. Is there anything else you guys suggest to do, specifics? I would love to hear from some successful sleevers. I am kind of bummed out lately cause I have been in the dreaded 3 week stall. I will be a month out tomorrow, but I have been stalled for almost 2 weeks!!! I am trying to keep my hopes up though and plan for success. Please give me some ideas!!!!
  25. 3 week stall? lol..i am waiting to hit mine! everyone says they usually lose inches during this time... I am 1 month yesterday still losing but VERY SLOW now
