3 weeks po - how many steps?

Thanks @GottaLearnToSlowDown. The low BP & hypoglycaemia were not new to me just went from random episodes to way more frequent events. My dearest friend has Graves so I understand it’s challenges. Excited for you to be able to get back to your previous fitness soon. Congrats on your weight loss so far.

    Frustrating Pre-Op PCP Visit

Those meds do initially usually have pretty good weight loss, but from my own experience and the experience of others I've followed on a forum, the effectiveness usually diminished between 2 to 3 months. It wasn't working for me after the third month, and I had terrible side effects like really bad gas.

    where, when and how much?

I was insurance paid. Took about 5 months start to surgery. I had office notes to satisfy one of my monthly supervised weight management appointments.

    where, when and how much?

I had my surgery in July 2020, and I was self-pay due to a lower BMI. My surgeon said if I gained 18 lbs. I could qualify, but that was not going to happen as far as I was concerned. 3-4 lbs. maybe, but not 18. I went to Cleveland Clinic because they had done a heart valve replacement on me the year before and there was some degree of comfort having them do the sleeve surgery. $26,000 out of pocket. Ouch.

    Energy

I'm 2 weeks post op today. I have no energy at all. I don't get out of breath. Just really tired, even walking to the bathroom. Is this normal? I am getting my protein and water in each day. I am still losing weight. Sent from my SM-G991U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Month 2 Stall

Well done on for your efforts so far, you been doing great! Your weight loss for your starting weight is probably above average for the time frame. As you are very close to the healthy weight range for your height weight loss is going to be lower and slower, and you will likely experience more stalls on the way to your goal, with your goal weight being on the lower end of the healthy weight range. What type of exercise are you doing? If its fairly intense you may need to up your calories a little, I know that may feel counterintuitive but for some people it does break a stall. Are you still weighing an measuring your food and drinks with calories or just guestimating? If guessimating, time to get the measurement tools out again.

    Month 2 Stall

Hello, So tomorrow I'll be 2 months post op. So far this journey has been great! I'm down 25 lbs since surgery, 36 since starting the pre op diet. The last 8 days I haven't lost or gained anything. I've been stuck at this weight. I average 850-900 calories, 85g of protein, 50g of carbs (total, not net), 40g of fat, and 80 oz of water. & I workout about 4 days a week. Can anyone offer advice to help break this stall? It has me starting to freak out a little about how long it'll be and I'm only halfway to my goal.

    Revision in Mexico?

I am pre-op, but I am having my VSG in Mexico at HospitalBC on 9/21. There is a private FB page for Dr. Illan's patients, and many of them have gone to him for revisions (Dr. Jalil Illan, MD, FACS, FASMBS Weight Loss Surgery support group). Definitely suggest joining the FB group so you can get some first hand opinions! I did a good bit of research before deciding to go with Dr. Illan and have been extremely pleased with the process so far. Surgery in Mexico is absolutely a viable, safe option as long as you do your research and go with a reputable surgeon. Good luck on your revision, I hope you're able to find a surgeon your trust and can get it done!
  9. Not trying to sound dramatic or anything but I've been on this forum since 2016 and I've been fantasizing about having this surgery for the past decade and I always knew in my mind that the day I do it will be one of the happiest days in my life especially from watching all those YT videos of people speaking about their positive life changes after the surgery and all... now I know that that there are truly positive and beneficial changes which will come from the surgery especially when it comes to health and life expectancy apart from the visual aspect of it and I know that in a few months once I start seeing the difference and losing weight I will feel differently too BUT right now, 5 days after the surgery, from the moment I came out of the operation room and opened my eyes up until this moment I cant stop feeling but regret that I did the surgery, I'm not sure why I feel this way but it's causing me somewhat of a depression and I'm feeling sad all the time that I did it, that I had to cut a part of my inner self and go through all this pain and misery to lose weight, regrets that I couldn't do it without surgery eventhough I tried dieting hard so many times and for so long. I just really regret having this operation and I feel so unhappy about having to do it now that I've done it eventhought I've been wanting to do it for so long. Anyome else who's had it felt the same way, and what helped you move on?

    Frequency of meals

Well congrats to you on your weight loss and maintenance! According to my diet plan from my dr and nutritionist, I can have certain crackers and certain breads toasted. I love a good quarter of a tuna “sandwich” on a weekend. And skinless chicken wings in the air fryer, are also approved for me. 3 skinless wings have 19g protein and 5g fat according to my app I use for tracking. It’s not pure fat. It may have higher fat content than other proteins, but it’s not a forbidden item for my plan. I eat mostly halibut, salmon, and tuna which my husband catches in Hawaii or Alaska on his annual fishing trips. I’m well aware of high proteins, the amount of calories I burn working out, and what’s on my plan. If I want to have something on my approved list, then what’s the problem?
  13. Well, I'm 19 months out. According to my logbook I lost the most my first month. This is my entire weight loss log post surgery if you're curious (for reference, I lost 68 pounds prior to surgery. I also have more stalls then anyone I've ever seen on this site) : 1st Month= 23 pounds 2nd Month= 15 pounds 3rd Month= 17 pounds 4th Month= 10 pounds 5th Month= 9 pounds 6th Month= 10 pounds 7th Month= 6 pounds 8th Month= 9 pounds 9th Month= 5 pounds 10th Month= 7 pounds 11th Month= 6 pounds 12th Month= 4 pounds 13th Month= 4 pounds 14th Month= 3 pounds 15th Month= 4 pounds 16th Month= 4 pounds 17th Month= 1 pound 18th Month= 5 pounds 19 Month= 1 pound
  14. Unfortunately the heady weight loss rate of the first few weeks after surgery doesn’t last & your rate will slow over time. I lost about 5kg in the 2.5 weeks pre surgery diet. I lost about 9kg in the first month post surgery, another 9 the next two months (so18kg+/- in those first three months post surgery). Took another three months to lose the 9kg to my goal. (Just noticed the repeating 9kg losses over those time frames - freaky!) I lost another 11.5kg over the next year (months 6 to 18).

3 weeks po - how many steps?

You can only do as much as you can do because we heal & recover differently. In my third week, I went to my local shopping centre, walked about 800m & suddenly my blood pressure & blood sugar dropped. Had to sit down pretty darn quickly. But that was me. Others don’t have those issues. My advice would be to start slowly & build up your steps to see what you can do. You won’t be able to do what you were doing before surgery but you’ll be able to get back to that point pretty quickly. Don’t walk far from your home (up & down your street is good to begin) so in case you have a sudden drop in energy you’re close to home. Oh & take an electrolyte drink with you. I learnt that after my experience. Try some resistance bands to help build muscle in a more gentle way. Ensure you’re meeting your daily protein goal to offset your body going to your muscles for energy. But 4kg of muscle loss in three or so weeks does seem a lot. How much weight did you lose in that same period? Does the maths add up considering the weight you lost in that time frame would include water weight & fat as well & they would be the larger proportion of the loss.

    Is pain normal?

There’s pain & there’s pain. Towards the end of the first week most if not all the surgical pain requiring strong pain meds tends to have passed. But you may still experience discomfort, twinges, & short, sharp stabs of pain. Yes, the pain across your chest could be from drinking too quickly & putting strain on your healing tummy (remember all those stitches & staples holding your tummy together). Burping is likely also putting stress on your tummy pressuring the tender muscles & forcing your oesophageal sphincter to open. Watch swallowing too much air as you sip & sip slowly. It could also be oesophageal spasms. As @Jodikins67 suggested warm drinks like herbal or green tea & heating pads can helps. It can also be the surgical gas which can take a week or more to escape your body. It can also be muscle strain from where your muscles were expanded & stretched during surgery. The itchy wound sites can be from healing (of the wound itself but also nerve endings) but if you notice redness, a discharge, swelling, a smell call you doctor or go to the hospital as it could be an infection. Many say they struggle to sleep on their side or tummy for a short while after surgery. Don’t know if it’s starting weight related or just one of those things. Good luck & congrats on your surgery.
  17. Sip, always have a liquid in eyesight and reach, sip, drink a variety of liquids, sip, ice chips or sugar-free ice pops, sip. If you're thirsty, you're already dehydrated. Some people go to the extreme and set alarms to remind them to drink. I don't go to that extent. Some people have a favorite glass, bottle, mug, etc that encourages them to drink more. If your urine is really dark, you should see a doctor because there might be something else going on. Sometimes weight loss and a drastic reduction in calories can be dangerous for people with kidney disease.

My high weight was 414 and my surgery weight was 393.

    445 lb. Anyone else?

My highest recorded weight was 392 (in 2017). I was 389 when I started the program to have WLS and since my program required a 6 month monitored weight loss I lost 68 pounds during that time and was 321 on my surgery day. I'm currently 178 pounds. For reference... I had the Loop Duodenal Switch/SADI-S/SIPS surgery. It's a gastric sleeve stomach, just with the added intestinal bypass bit.

    Psych Meds after Gastric Bypass

Thank you for sharing your daughter's story. I was a normal weight until I started the meds for bipolar at age 14 and gained 100lb in 2 years. My PCP/GP (who works exclusively with patients who have a mental illness) actually recommended weight loss surgery for me. My psychopharmacologist also agrees it is the right move for me. I'm not expecting to go off my meds due to surgery, but I'd like to be more comfortable doing the thing I love like hiking and traveling. I have been in the hospital a number of times for bipolar disorder, so I don't think just losing weight or exercising will solve my problems. I am also (at 41) a bit old to start jogging.

    Psych Meds after Gastric Bypass

Thank you for sharing such a personal heartfelt story. My brother is bipolar and schizophrenic and he gets great relief exercising outside all year, particularly winter. He has been able to reduce his meds and loose weight as a result.

    445 lb. Anyone else?

I was lower but I was headed that way if I went enough years without the surgery. I was very thin until I was around 25 years old and had the onset of bipolar disorder. Between the depression and the meds my weight became a huge struggle and despite many diets I always seemed to gain year after year. I always thought when I finally got the right meds and was stable that I would be able to lose some weight but that was not the case. I called my gynocologist and asked for a weight history and it trended up year after year despite some quite significant losses in between. I never could keep it off. Gained it all back plus some each year. The only thing I had going for me was I only gained weight for 16 years and then I had the surgery.

    Psych Meds after Gastric Bypass

Lizonaplane, My daughter may be atypical, but she is bipolar and had a RNY bypass over 10 years ago. She was on three meds; antidepressant, psychotic and anxiety. They tried crushing the tablets which made her throw up, so they changed her to Epilim as it was a liquid. Part of her weight gain had been the bipolar drugs. After her surgery she started to lose a lot of weight. Unknown to me, she weaned herself off the drugs, going cold turkey with the anti anxiety meds, because she started running. She found the endorphins from running made her feel good and moderated her condition. At her peak running she was doing 2 marathons per weekend many weeks. She is highly unusual as a Bypass patient in being able to do this! She injured her hip, and couldn’t run, so now she lifts weights. She was determined to take control of her life in every way. She has been drug free for years and is fit, healthy and active. I wanted to share because her psychiatrist at the time said the Bypass would not help her with her mental health, and refused to sanction the op. We paid a psychiatrist to assess her and they concluded she was sane enough to make her mind up. As a person who had previously attempted suicide on more than one occasion, she is an example of the positive outcome possible from gastric surgery. It saved her life, literally, and has given me my daughter back. I wish you all the best.
