  1. I believe i started this thread stating I was impressed with Dr. Kelly. Never did I bash Dr. Kelly. I was concerned with all the drama from professionals. I did not expect to call a number listed for a dr and have them recommend a different dr. Very unprofessional and to me that is a red flag. It makes you wonder if they know something that they are not telling you. That was my concern starting this topic. To the idiot that thinks im being deceitful and posing as someone looking for wls, well you're just an idiot. I paid a $500 deposit to Dr. Ortiz, scheduled the surgery, even flew to Atlanta but because I fly standby I could not get to San Diego that day January 9th. I have the cashiers check still in hand, all I have to do is reschedule. I believe Dr. Ortiz is an excellant dr, as I stated he did my lapband and didnt think twice about booking revision with him until talking to a coord. I just dont know if he has enough revision experience. So exfatso take your lanceur de merde somewhere else. Im not going to keep going with this, I have talked to Dr. K personally and feel very comfortable with his experience with revisions. He has great credentials and I will be booking my surgery for next week. His cell phone number is 619-793-4869 and email is jrkelly45@hotmail.com if anyone wants to book with him directly. Dr. Kelly assured me he would take good care of me so I am at peace with my decision. For those that have just booked and now having doubts, call him directly. Im done dealing with any coordinators, they are the ones causing so much trouble for him.
  2. I had a revision frm band to sleeve @178. Im about 4 weeks out and doing really good! I dont weight my self@ home only when I go to d Dr. and in d first two weeks I lost 18lbs.. I didnt have a pre op diet i only did liquids from 12 midnight before surgery. My diet is a little diff. than others, full liquid out of hospital and I was aloud to drink gatorade, v8 so he wasent to stricked about d sugar free drinks. Ill be 4 weeks Tomorrow and today I tries Some chicken not blended but very good chewed. I almost never blended anything cause im use to chewing very well cause of my hand. He wants me to eat a little more cause my bmi is already @25.I lost 140 on d band and it slipped and I had a liquid removed for 2 months and gain 20 lbs. so d Dr. recomended me d sleeve to help me lose d rest and he said that d sleeve will help me maintain:) d one thing i was worried about was losing too much but d Dr. said that my body will know when to stop and there is ways to gain Some back If I need to....sorry for d Long story.lol
  3. Dr Lopez in mx! Coming from New Zealand and saving a small fortune! He sounds like a bit of a guru on revisions. What r u gonna do?
  4. Hi I have had revision surgery 3 years apartment. Band first and sleeve second x
  5. In the US, it doesn't seem like a lot of revision from band to sleeve are done during same surgery. Why would it be any different in Mexico?? Seems to me the Dr did a lot of mis communicating however well intentioned it could've been.

    Why did you choose bypass?

I had the sleeve on 1/26/2012. I did lose 90 lbs. within the first year. I had absolutely NO dumping and no reflux. I figured out really quick that I could eat all the same foods as before but only less. I convinced myself that now I was "normal" and could eat what I wanted because of my restricted stomach size. WRONG!! I started regaining a couple of years out and all the weight came back quickly. I have no restriction and can eat a full size plate with no problem. I am now scheduled for a sleeve to bypass revision at the end of October. Everybody has to do what is best for them, but I have since learned after the sleeve that there are quite a few others that are also gaining back after about year two. I am beyond blessed that I get a second "second chance" with bypass. I will not mess it up this time! Stay afraid of the foods that caused the gain in the first place!!

    Why did you choose bypass?

Your story sounds like what my surgeon just told me during my consult. He,said about 1/3 of sleeve patients will experience hearburn after the procedure, but he said he is seeing many people 4/5 yearsafter the sleeve having horrendous reflux and doing revisions to rny. Not sure how long your out, best of luck to u. Sent from my SM-N920P using the BariatricPal App

    December sleevers!

I was a revision from band to sleeve, so had two drains (more extensive surgery with higher risk of complications like excess bleeding, leaks etc). The drains came out yesterday - yowsa that smarted. Really, it hurt, but it was over fast and now I am so happy to be FREE of those dang drains. I am down 11.8 pounds since surgery, more like 20# siince started preop diet. I feel like things are starting to happen - woo hoo!
  10. I have numerous reason for choosing the sleeve. 1. The risk for malabsorption was unacceptable. I have cvid which already causes a Protein deficiency. 2. Because of my cvid (common variable immune deficiency) I have a very high chance of stomach cancer. Having a left over stomach that isn't easily accessible to scope (think every couple months) would be asking for trouble. 3. because the RNY leaves the stomach in the body, it doesn't decrease the ghrelin hormone like the sleeve does. Decreasing my hunger is a big thing for me. Another side effect of cvid is stomach issues. I'm used to having diarrhea. I'm afraid that if I have the RNY I will still be constantly hungry, but because the pouch is so small I'll eat the WRONG things (like chocolate) and because I'm used to dumping syndrome it won't deter me. 4. Rerouting my whole system just freaks me out 5. The sleeve has nearly comparable weight loss stats (and if u look at the 2+ year studies it actually has more) 6. the sleeve also changes how the guts bile acids bind to a receptor called fxr. In the absence of fxr weight loss occurs. So aside from restrictive and hormonal changes the sleeve causes a change in your metabolism. That's huge for me! 7. I don't like the idea that I might not be able to absorb needed medications 8. If I find the sleeve doesn't help, I can revise it to add the malabsorption part. I suggest writing out a pro/cons list and going with what feels right to you. Good luck!!

    May 2022 surgery?

On May 9, I had a revision to my original gastric bypass RNY (2004). It’s called Endoscopy with Argon Plasma Coagulation. Basically they go down your esophagus to the pouch’s exit and zap it to create scar tissue which makes the opening smaller. I’ve had to go back to the post-surgery meal plan. I’ve worked my way up to chicken. I’ve lost 21 pounds since. It seems like it’s a slower loss than before, but maybe my body has grown accustomed to having the smaller stomach, and maybe the gastric juices aren’t as concentrated as they were. Here’s me now (top) and before revision (bottom). I’m glad this forum is here. I need the support from fellow bariatrics.

Let's Get The Duodenal Switch People Together

Hi Tater, DS is the newest, most involved, and least "popular" of the weight loss surgeries. Hopefully, it will get it's own headline soon. I too was a self pay but revised to DS after the sleeve did not give me the results I needed. Going to a sunny climate to have the surgery in the dead of winter sounds great to me. Welcome! Liz
  13. Like others, i didn't care to have my plumbing rerouted, but originally i too had chosen RNY. I have severe GERD and hypertension, PCOS, insulin resistance, and on and on... My doc had a serious talk with me about TWO things he thought were pertinent regarding my choice: the fact that I am under 40 and have about 80 lbs to lose. He was concerned about the fact that I will likely have a normal longevity, and dealing with malabsorbtion of Vitamins for another 40+ years will be taxing on my system. The other issue was something called 'blind stomach'. I had stomach issues including the GERD and ulcers and other stuff. His BIG concern for me was the fact that with rny they essentially staple off the majority of your stomach and it sits there, closed up forever. there is never again a way to see inside of that organ other than to scope it externally from your ribcage area. he told me that a scope would be necessary every couple of years and that scopes are not meant to be inserted from the outside of your skin through an incision and it would require surgery and eventually revision of major scar tissue. YUCK. didn't want to deal with all that! after that appt it was VERY easy to decide!~

Balloon Removed and Feelin' Fine! :-)

@@Wayward Traveler Thank you, it's been quite a journey for me, first the lap band (2009), then the lap band to sleeve revision (just 2 months ago). I have to have restriction (cry hehe) which is why you're exceptionally inspirational to me. Keep up the great work!
  15. Just curious - what do you think is going to happen to your weight after your band is removed? Did you discuss this decision with your surgeon before you had the band put in? I know people have the band removed due to complications or revision to another WLS but almost anyone who got theirs removed and not revised to another WLS put all the weight back on. I have never heard of anyone who got the band as a temporary fix with the idea of having it removed after hitting goal. If it took the band to get you to goal what makes you think you will stay there after it's removed and your stomach goes back to normal capacity? These people that you heard of who had theirs removed after goal - did they stay at goal? I guess I am just stunned at your answer as I've never heard this before and am surprised a surgeon would agree to due it for that reason.

    Shrinking Violets - Part 5!

Laura, Dr. Aceves did my banding. The hospital he uses is not a butcher shop, I can assure you of that. It is incredibly clean, and there is constant cleaning going on. There was not an issue of language except for Rick in the cafeteria---he pointed, they cooked, problem solved. Getting TO the hospital, I grew concerned. It is in a rough part of Mexicali. But as my DH pointed out, MANY hospitals are----they are built near the original metro area, and as the city moves, the old parts become slummy. I mean you lived in ABQ----think of where Presbyterian and the Heart Hospital and Lovelace are.....right off Central Avenue. And UNM---pretty slummy! BUT they are good hospitals! So was the hospital Dr. Aceves uses. He was attentive, and informative, and his staff was incredible. IF I could travel to Mexico again, I would use him to do anything I needed. But til I change my name....I am stuck here! I have a question for you----you are discussing with him the revision surgery. But you did well with your band. What would his charge be to repair your band? If finances are an issue, it might get you repaired, at an affordable amount, and you still have the option of your local Dr. for fills/unfills etc. Hell your current Dr. may never even know-----just WOW it works again!!! LOL Just thinking from a financial point. Because you DID lose weight with your band....I know, I saw you! Life sucks here. Loooong very stressful story. Kinsey got injured with her Dad last weekend. DD thought it was handled, and then got the call from daycare today that CPS was involved. They are not being pushy, they seem ok with things, but who knows. I am trying to go on with things as normal...as is she, but it is not as easy. Kinsey is ok.
  17. There is an article in Newsweek, July 25, 2011 issue called 15 Leaders in Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Ortiz appeared to me to have the most experience of all of them! Because I did consider staying in the states and getting my revision from band to sleeve and use my health insurance. In the end I chose to go back to dr Ortiz because I like him, the center was familiar, he ONLY does bariatric surgery and he has a lot of experience plus the ICE rating. The surgeon in my city just started doing bariatric work in March 2013, and still does general surgeries as well. I included a pic of the article but if you can't find it on the internet I could scan it for you. Good luck making a choice!

    January Surgery Bandsters Group

Hi everyone! I'm trying to figure out how to fix my elliptical wheel, I ordered the part and it came and now I think I"m going to have to do some major deconstruction! Bummer, why is nothing easy!!! So tonight is zumba again, since I can't do the elliptical. Nicole- those look like good bras! I just had to buy new ones from the store who shall not be named, same cup size but down 4 inches in my band! I too can't wait to not have to shop there, but still there for now. Congrats on the 16's- even about 7 years ago when I'd lost about 40 lbs I was in a size 18. You'll be in your 14's before you know it!! Isn't it funny- I'm about 15 lbs heavier than you (I'm at 223 now)- but still in a size 20 or 22 (which is waaay better than the size 26 I started in!!) and you're in a 16! It was Meredith that posted the swimsuit website a few pages back... Glad you're feeling the fill (LOL). Chrissy- yay for having to revise your goal DOWNWARD!!!! yay!!! Nj2NC- how's the logging going!!! It will soon be a habit, just like you do for your exercise. Congrats on all the compliments on the dress! It just goes to show that even if you plateau, your body is still changing. The weight will follow. Kymie! I've missed you!! What is this plan you're doing? A pound a day?? Sounds awesome! 65 lbs gone forever!! You'll make your goal and then some!!! Erica- Either you're a night owl or on the other side of the world- you always post so early in the morning (I'm eastern standard time)- so I don't know if you've already had your dinner - but here's some advice anyways- just take small small bites! And the fish idea is good- have something to dip it in (like tartar sauce or au jus or something depending on the dish). And chew really well. Eat slowly! Good luck. Well, back to the grind. I do have a pedicure today- my treat for the 50 lbs lost! Nicki

    Dallas, Texas Sleevers! !

A question for any of Dr. Kim's patients.. Did you have to do a sleep study? I am looking to have a revision and have a consult with him next week. I have limited time off and 2 small kids so really don't want to have to do a sleep study too. Thx!!

    Ask Dr. Schulman...

Dr. Schulman, thank you for providing this wonderful service. I have definitely learned alot in the last few hours surfing some of the previous posts. I do, however, have a few questions of my own. I'm probably about 50 lbs. from my "goal" - a number that I'm sure I will revise considerably in the months to come. I will need an arm lift, breast lift, and TT sometime in the future. My biggest interest right now is the removal of my pannis. It has reduced slightly with my 70lb. weight loss but it is still considerable. Although I have never gone to a doctor for rashes, I could have if I had realized this was an option. (I figured he would just tell me to use some powder and diaper rash ointment!) You have commented that a PS who works with obese patients is best. Do you need that type of surgeon for this type of surgery as it does not seem cosmetic in nature? Also could you give me an estimate of the costs for this type of surgery? Thanks for your time and expertise.
  21. I was attacked on the Band Forum too when I started asking for help after my band was failing and broken apart. I was mad, but so glad my doctor told me about the sleeve. I have not met anyone like that here. The sleeve community is very supportive. I know for a fact that my band failied ME and not the other way around. I have had nothing but success with the sleeve. The band was a big, painful mistake and I am so happy to have it out! I do try to tell people my story if they are deciding on a WLS. I really think that eventually, the statistics on the band will speak for themselves. Especially with all of the revisions being done!
  22. Me too. I originally had the band but it dislodged soon after. I've since been diagnosed with diabetes and decided to revise into the sleeve to help with it. Blood sugar was great the first couple of weeks but is slowly starting to creep up again. Disappointed that I'll have to probably start up low doses of insulin again but glad that it's less meds than before still. It's so hard to understand why it's raising again considering that I eat such low low carbs right now (2 1/2 weeks out)
  23. I'm doing OK. I had less to lose than many, as I was getting a revision (removing a lap band and getting the sleeve). In the 10 1/2 weeks since surgery on 9/13 . I've lost 25 since surgery and down 41 total (from the pre-surgery diet, that started in August). I'm eating between 600-800 calories, I walk daily (I have 2 dogs) and have added additional activities during the day. I'm moving into some size 12 jeans and that feels pretty good!

    Ask Dr. Schulman...

The scar from the gyn surgery is not an issue at all. In fact, the majority of my patients have a pre-existing scar in that area (s-secction, etc.). This is removed with the PS - eith an panni, abdominoplasty, or LBL. The Scar from the kidney surgery is a little more of an issue. Because of blood supply issues, it may interfere a bit with PS - it may limit the amount of tissue removed in that area, but this really depends on exactly where the scar is (your PS will evaluate it when the time comes). Either way, this kidney scar can be revised - it can be redone by your PS and made to look nicer. Hope this helps. Good luck with the weight loss

    Ask Dr. Schulman...

    1. A LBL always includes a TT, buttock lift, and outer thigh lift. If you only need the back done, it is possible to just get a buttock lift and outer thigh lift, without the TT. This would technically not be a LBL, but rather a buttock/thigh lift. Basically, it would be the back part of a LBL incision. This does not prevent you from getting a TT in the future. WHile it is unusual for someone to only need the back done, and not the front, it does happen occassionally. 2. I think that if kids are in the plans within the next few years, than waiting for the TT is reasonable. You are right that the belly will stretch out a bit, and many people have a small revision after the kids. 3. Scars can be "stuck" from adhesions to deep tissue. This is very common and can be seen in any scars. There are ways to fix this without a TT. You can have a scar revision in which the adhesions are cut and it will no longer appear "stuck". Sometimes, fat or other things can be placed underneath to correct a divot. 4.see#3. No 5.Many procedures can be combined. I routinely combine TT with breast lift/augmentations - in fact, I just got out of the operating room for this very procedure. Combining procedures depends on your health, motivation, and skill of the surgeon. I prefer to not combine another procedure with a LBL because it is a big operation itself and requires a lot of recovery. It would be dangerous to add to this procedure.
