  1. I'm the same! Almost 4 weeks out and only lost 10 pounds. It's almost depressing Sent from my SM-A716U using BariatricPal mobile app

So hungry 15 minutes after eating

Don't panic! I'm post op 3 weeks and i have only lost 9 pounds! I'm eating 5 to 6 times a day getting 90% of my protein in. And 90% of my water. I'm on soft foods now and gained a pound! Im also hungry.. I panicked until I have read where other people are in the same boat. I'm up at 2am writing because I went in panic mode. Our bodies are all different and age, how long we carried the weight, medicines and if you didn't eat that much before surgery it may take longer. I got upset because I saw so many people saying that they lost 30 and 40 pounds in a month! 10 pounds is better then what i had been doing. You being hungry too is normal. Try to relax and keep drinking as much as you can. Try thr protein water. I'm sorry we are going through such hardship through this part of our journey. But it will get better. It has to! Keep strong Sent from my SM-A716U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Breakfast

Okay. Good to know. I’ve always been a major breakfast eater. I’m just going to have to adjust. My tummy can’t handle caffeine yet. I tried the coffee protein shake and it was the worst day I’ve had yet. I tried it at week 2. 💛💛💛💛

    Breakfast

Thank you so much. This was very helpful. I’ll try some tea and see if that helps. I can’t do coffee. I was one of those who had a little coffee with my sugar. I have the coffee flavored protein shakes, but they made me sick. I guess my tummy wasn’t ready for the caffeine yet. It was at week 2. I’ve always been a breakfast person. That’s why this feels so weird. Thank you for the advice on trying something warm. 💛💛💛💛

    Coffe

This is too late to be helpful for you at this point, but in case it helps future folks, my clinic had me start transitioning off caffeine two weeks before the pre-op diet, reasoning that dealing with caffeine withdrawal in addition to the normal pre-op diet issues is just too much! I was allowed coffee again after three months but everyone's program varies wildly. Talk to your surgeon's office and see what's allowed on yours.
  7. True, tastes change after surgery. I used Genepro and added it to a bit of Crystal Light. Sweets were gross at first. Bone broth helped. If it makes you feel better for the time being, I couldn’t keep much down for weeks (vomiting), including protein, but I made it through. So if you are in contact with your surgeon, a temporary delay in protein is doable till you make it to soft foods. GL!

    My new body

Wow. Been awhile since I posted. I hit one-derland on my birthday a few weeks ago, which felt awesome. I've been having gall bladder issues for a few months but trying some alternative healing methods before taking drastic action. Ive gone from a size 20 to a size 12. Its amazing being able to wear regular sizes - and white! Picking out clothes I like vs. clothes that fit. Body dysmorphia is real - I can tell I'm losing weight but I still feel like I look the same. Just today, I noticed my skin on my stomach and thighs is getting very thin and loose in certain spots. It was sort of a strange sight but I didn't love it or hate it. Mostly curious about it. My partner has been super supportive of the surgery and lifestyle changes but while we were hanging out, I surprised him and showed him my loose granny skin. The look on his face hit me hard. It was like surprise and disgust. That was tough. No regrets. One day at a time.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Sounds like you’re on the same pills as me. I’ve been swallowing them whole. At first I broke the gall bladder pill in half, but after the 4th week, I could swallow it whole. I have to take a lot of pills and hate it. Hopefully some of them will eventually be stopped. I’m with you on the protein shakes. I’m going to bag most of mine up soon and donate them. I think I can get my protein in with food. I’m on week 6 now. The protein soups are acceptable, but now I really hate the shakes.

    3 Weeks Post Op

From Lewis: Now at 3 weeks post VSG/SADI and still have severe stomach tightness after every intake of liquids and purees and softs even tiny amounts! Consequently my overall intake stinks and I'm weak every day Anybody having similar issues? Should I just wait this out?

    This surgery is bullshit...

The way that things were explained to me was that this surgery is a tool. Not a magic cure. You still need to put in the work. You still need to change your eating habits and activity levels. Especially with gastric sleeve surgery. You cannot be stagnant and expect the weight to just melt off. Your body does eventually adjust to the drastic changes. I went into this surgery knowing that I would be saying goodbye to sugars, sweets, fried foods and most carbs, etc. I went into this surgery knowing that I would need to get off my behind and be more active, joining a gym and now looking into a kick-boxing class. But my main goal of this surgery was to put my T2 diabetes into remission and I can honestly say that I have been off my meds for 6 weeks now and my sugar levels are beautifully controlled. So, I for one disagree with your sentiment that this surgery is bull****. I hope you find a plan that works for you and your goals.

    Locs/Dreads/Dreadlocks

Thank you so much for this. I have been interlocking from the beginning. I have really small locs. Over 300. Plus I used to hike and garden so I had to wash my hair a lot and twisting was pointless. Lol!!!! I now interlock every 4-6 months. I had my hair interlocked a week before surgery so would not have to do any major manipulating and pulling for several months after surgery. I have heard a lot if VSG patients say they didn’t lose any hair because they don’t deal with the malabsorption like we RYN patients do. I don’t know if that is the reason or not. I try not to touch it at all unless I’m moisturizing my scalp or washing it. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR RESPONDING. 💛💛💛💛
  13. I didn't like the milky flavors the first few weeks after surgery, either (eventually I got to the point I could drink them again, though) . During those early weeks, I had the chicken broth-flavored Unjury one that someone above mentioned, and some of the fruit-flavored powders by Syntrax.
  14. There are many brands of protein shakes and powders and each of them offer many flavors. Just do a google search to see what is out there. The prices varies from reasonable to ridiculously expensive, so shop around. Many can be found at Walmart or ordered online from the manufacturers or Amazon. My clinic recommends these brands (but I've tried many others): Premier Protein Ensure Max Equate High Performance Atkins Plus Musle Milke Genuine, Muscle Milk Light Boost Max Fair Life Core Power There are even high protein soup powders from ProtiDiet and Bariatric Advantage, and others. The variety is vast. Some you will like, some you won't. If you don't like something today, try it again in a week. You can also make your own high protein shakes. There are lots of recipes online, using unflavored whey protein powder mixed with milk or water, like GenePro I prefer plant-based unflavored powder, Like Orgain or Pure Protein. You can add protein powder to just about any liquid, even your coffee or tea or bullion.

    Last 10 pounds

I'm having the same problem. I can't seem to lose the last 10. I just joined the gym hoping that will help and I'm thinking of going back on the protein shakes to see if that will help. Has anyone gone back to the 2 week pre-surgery diet to help lose some weight and keep it off for the last few pounds?? Any advice will help. TIA..
  16. I’m at 6 weeks now and would definitely do a cruise. You’ll be able to eat yogurt, oatmeal, ham and eggs for breakfast. The lunch and dinner buffet and menus will have lots of options for protein and vegetables…especially fish. You’ll be full after a small portion. I haven’t been eating salads because I don’t feel ready for raw vegetables and hard fruits like apples. I would skip dessert, bread, and alcohol. You could bring some protein powder in case you’re low on protein with the small portions. With the pre diet and surgery, you would probably be down 25 pounds by your cruise.

    Fudgesicles

Oh my goodness I was looking at those the other day. Today is week 3 for me. I get the outshine no sugar added fruit pops. I only eat one every 2-3 days. They are satisfying. If you like the fudge taste. You can make some Sugar Free Chocolate Jello pudding. I use Protein reduced fat lactaid instead of regular fat free milk. I add some unflavored Bariatric Fusion protein power to it. I do this with the sugar free cheesecake pudding. You can do it with chocolate instead. Hope this helps. 💛💛💛💛
  18. Is there anyone who has had gastric bypass and has dreadlocks???? I am doing a lot of my end to try and combat hair loss as best as I can. Making sure I’m getting my protein in, other supplements, and collagen, etc. I know hair loss is a part of the surgery but I’m doing what I can to minimize it when I get to that point. I am only 3 weeks ends right now. My dreadlocks fall between the middle of my back and my “bottom.” I was wondering since our hair doesn’t require a lot of manipulation if the hair loss is the same of us. I just wash my hair and keep it up in a bun yo lessen the manipulation. I saw one YouTube say she didn’t lose her locs but she lost her edges. I know everyone’s experience is different, but wondering if I would have to cut off my locs. Thank you in advance for your responses. 💛💛💛💛

    Breakfast

Does anyone else have problems with eating breakfast???? I still have a protein shake or smoothie for breakfast. I can mix my vitamins and supplements in with my shakes first thing in the morning. It is my hardest meal to get down. I even struggle to drink water first thing in the morning. Today is officially 3 weeks for my since gastric bypass. It literally feels like my pouch is closed early in the morning. I have never thrown up or anything. It can about 1.5 - 2 hours to get down a 8-10oz shake. Has anyone else experienced this???? I don’t have this problem any other time of day. Only breakfast. Thanks in advance 💛💛💛💛

Pre Op Liquid Diet - surprisingly doable

Thanks for this post...I am starting my pre op diet in about 2 weeks and I am worried about it. I can have shakes or small meals of protein and veggies. I'm going to try 2 shakes and 2 meals to begin and for the last few days go with all shakes to make sure my liver has shrunk. Keeping my fingers crossed I have the same experience.

    Weight Loss Stall

I remember that frustration well during my stalls. "Whaddya mean I gained a pound a half? I hardly ate yesterday!" A few tips: 1. Increase your water. Don't rest on "enough water." If you need to, buy some bottled water and set aside four 16 or 20 oz bottles and decide "I will finish all four of these bottles today." Increase your intake and do so very intentionally. 2. On some levels, stalls will happen no matter you do. But I think you can shorten them sometimes by shocking your body out of them. Medical research indicates that our brain has a weight thermostat where it thinks we should be at (i.e. a brain deciding that someone should be at around 275 lbs). For those of us who needed this surgery, our thermostat got messed up somewhere and decided that we needed to be grossly overweight. The surgery does alter your hunger hormones and your brain is now frantically trying to decide where the thermostat should be. Routines are great post-surgery because a routine is nothing more than developing/ingraining habits. But when you are in a routine, sometimes your brain thinks, "OK, this is the weight we should be at." So by temporarily changing your habits, you can shock your brain into thinking, "OK, this isn't going to work. Lower the weight goal." Take a day and really push yourself with your walking -- try going 45-60 mins. Or only walk your 15-30 mins, but walk as fast as you reasonably can. Take a day where you only eat protein. The next day, munch on a small handful of carbs (like mini pretzels or something). Temporarily push your body out of its routine and see what happens.
  22. Hi all! I'm 23 and got my sleeve 1 week ago (on 12/7). I've been keeping up with my vitamins and trying my best to meet my fluid intake (I drink water, electrolyte water and eat SF popsicles for meals), but I'm having trouble with protein supplements. When I was pre-op, I bought Isopure protein drinks (premade) and they tasted pretty good, but now post-op I can't stand the taste or after taste of them (same flavors as pre-op). This is causing me to not meet my protein goals at all, which is terrible and my body is definitely reacting to it (lots of aches and pains). I'm trying to stay away from the milky shakes since my stomach doesn't handle lactose well in high quantities, but if there's one that doesn't taste terrible or have a bad aftertaste then I'm willing to try it. Any advice to get to my goals? I was already a picky eater before the sleeve and now it's gonna be my downfall if I don't find something I like soon 🥲 Sent from my SM-G975U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

Hey There! Any December 2021 Surgery Friends?

I feel this. I’m 2 weeks post op and can barely get in my protein which is only 300 cals. Doing anything is exhausting. I’m not sure if it’s that way for others. Good luck with your surgery
  24. It absolutely, a hundred thousand percent, is worth it. Within a month I was completely off my blood pressure medication. Within six weeks I didn't need my inhaler anymore and could run for the first time in forever. I'm off my antidepressant. My CPAP is next to go. Do I get tired? Yeah. I do. Still working on getting that protein up given how physically active my life is. Would I take the 105 lbs. I've lost back? ABSOLUTELY NEVER.

    Wondering if this is normal?

Nearly all of my stuff was in the two weeks prior to surgery, so don't fret. I had: - clearance from a psychologue - EKG - one meeting with a dietitian - one support group meeting - blood tests - final clearance from my normal family doctor
