Dr. Miles or Dr. Schmitt patients

I have thought about the Bypass too. I had lost 65 lbs, then got a little too tight around christmas for some reason (all of the sudden, with no fill change). I started eating slider foods and didn't even notice at first. I started creeping up, and now have gained back 24 lbs! I went in for a slight unfill in January, then I had no restriction, and then they filled me again, but still haven't been able to find my sweet spot again. :-( The band is certainly frustrating. I love it, and hate it at the same time. I find myself wishing I had gone with the GB, but my reasoning for not is still there. I hate the idea of having my digestive system re-routed and some parts cut out....scary stuff. I always worry about problems related to malnutrition too. I am young, and my husband and I want to have kids, and I worry about being pregnant after having GB and not getting enough nutrients. That was the main reason I went with the band. I really hope I can get back on track with my band again, but if something goes wrong with it, I will probably consider the bypass, if my insurance covers it. I can't go back to having nothing again. I can't go back to where I was. What have people heard about insurance covering revisions to bypass?

    Hello from WV

Yep Im sure I will see you Kyla.. If that is the case with your port, that isnt as bad as the band leaking. I know someone who has already had to have her port revised. I think she is the first and only one so far. Hers flipped over though and they couldnt get it to flip back. Support group is next monday right?? the 24th? Thats the first day of finals, that gonna be a fun day lol.:Dancing_sorry:
  3. I'm having my gallbladder removed along with the revision from band to sleeve all in one too. My surgeon says it doesn't add any additional time so no need for me to worry.
  4. It's good to see so many are successful with band to sleeve revision. I need a bit more consistency for myself. The band does what the band wants as we know. Too tight one day, not enough the next, etc etc. I'm honestly tired of fighting it! Well I have to fight it for several more months but hopefully early next year I can get rid of it and I'll have the sleeve

    September 25Th Sleevers!

Hi Sept 25th Sleevers. I had a band to sleeve revision done with unexpected hiatal hernia repair on the 25th also. Its nice to see there are others having the same things happen to their body at the same time as mine. This surgery is a totally different experience than my band was. My diet as of this morning changed from clear liquids & protein drinks to full liquids & protein drinks. My biggest problem is that milk based protein drinks seem to go right through me. I have tried lactose free and lactaid, sometimes both at the same time. For the most part, any dairy does this. Anyone else having this problem? Also, I saw a few of you were at Forest Park, is that in St. Louis? I was at Des Peres & had to spend 2 nights due to some unexpected (very scary now that I think about it) complications. Hope to hear updates from all of you soon.

So today is day 4 after my revision to gastric. Not feeling 100% yet but on my way. I have that same excitement as when I first had my Lapland done. I can see the finish line in my mind of the new healthier, thinner me. I pray it goes well this time around. I am not left disappointed or with having to have another surgery. So here are my new STATS Before lapband 265 Before removal 237 After revision to gastric 225

JSRICO, Glad to hear you made it through your revision surgery well. My thoughts will be with you as you start this leg of your journey. Please keep us all posted about your progress. No matter what method or methods we use, I think the support we can give each other is tremendously important. Only we who have lived the struggle and made these life-changing decisions can really understand what we go through. All best, Margaret (NimbleBean)
  8. I'm in my 3rd month from my revision and I'm very happy with it so far. I've lost 35 lbs and I do have restriction even though my sleeve is not as small as a usual sleeve. The other day I pushed it and finished my plate and I did throw it back up. Otherwise I have not had a problem at all. I know not to do that now.

    Australian Bandsters Chat Thread

Hi I am from Lakes Entrance, Vic and was banded last July at Latrobe Hospital. I have been having ongoing problems with diaphragm irritation pain even after revision surgery to move the tubing out from under my diaphragm. Has anybody else had this problem or heard of anyone who has. I am desperate for answers as even my surgeon has no idea what it causing it and I really dont want to have to have the band taken out!!!

    Kansas City Area Sleevers?

Hi, I am from the Kansas City area and was a band to sleeve revision on May 29th, 2012 at Shawnee mission med center. My surgeon was Dr Hoehn. I will be 6 weeks out this coming Tues and I am feeling very good. Ready to start introducing "normal" foods in 2 weeks Pre-op 248 Current 220
  11. Guys I think I'm going to revise my goal weight. 30 more pounds might be too much more to loose, especially if my neck starts to look drawn. I know that this weight is still obese in fact morbidly obese but Id need to loose 40 more bls to be correct weight and even my doctor said thats probably too much. I vow not to get carried away with this weightloss thing though. Next thing you know I'll have to start looking for a plastic surgeon ! -106 lbs
  12. My reason for the revision to bypass was due to the excruciating pain I suffered from the port and the inability to get solid food down a lot of the time. I was in so much pain and was always sick becase of it. I would never even cross my mind to have another procdeure and NOT get this band/port out. It was the root of my problems. If you have the chance to get it out, do it.
  13. I've had the Sleeve and had to revise to the Bypass. Over the years I ended up with extreme GERD from the VSG and had to revise. Of the two I'd say they both work great. If I HAD to pick which one I like the best I pick the Bypass. I don't have as much esophageal pain now and I'm feeling good/normal. I recognize when I am full and I stop eating immediately. Haven't had any post op problems at all except the incision pain was annoying, but it went away. Good luck to you!
  14. I am going in for sleeve to bypass revision in 10 days.. I am wondering how everyone's weight loss has been after a revision... Please share.. Thanks!

    Sleeve to Bypass weight loss

I have lost 75lbs 10 months post sleeve to RNY revision.
  16. Staple line leak for 1st time WLS patients is low. Staple line leak for revisions from band to sleeve is much higher because the staple line goes through a previously scarred tissue and scar tissue doesn't heal like un-scarred tissue. I trust my surgeon, she's been the one of the top surgeons in our state for almost 2 decades. She would have referred me to another surgeon if I really wanted the band to sleeve revision. But after her explanation as to why it's not a smart idea, I agreed with her and decided that revising to something that's riskier wasn't the best idea. So, I went with the RYN because that staple line does not transverse the scar tissue created by the band, thus, no increased leakage potential. Clearly it's each patients choice. But knowing about the band to sleeve revision's potential issues is a good thing.
  17. Banded in 2011... lost 70ish lbs. Lots of small issues, nothing major or caused by the band. But it just wasn't working as advertised. 2 of the largest manufacturers, no longer make them. Lots of surgeons, won't install them any longer. The band works for some, but it was by and large over hyped and under performed. Now for the caution. Outside of all the other horror stories listed... Mine was a time bomb and I didn't even know it. So, no real issues, no slippage, no erosion, all imaging, scans, and scopes were good. Zero issues. Well, until they went to remove it when I was revised to Bypass. My band was 100% completely encapsulated in scar tissue. It took my surgical team more than 3 times longer to remove than it should have and increased my surgery time from 2-3 hours... to 6+. I can't say I really "Hated" the band... but there are just far too many problems and complications that just keep coming up. I didn't want to go permanent either, nor did I want to have my guts rearranged. I can say however that I'm beyond glad I got the bypass done. Who knows what would have happened if I left the band in there. I feel so much better now, I really wish I had gotten the bypass when I originally got the band. But my fear of commitment ended up costing me 2 surgeries and years of "dealing" with band. Personally, I would take the fact that revision rates continue to climb, that installation rates continue to drop and that 2 major manufactures, both pulled out of the business as a sign that... the band, might not be the best option, even if it is the one that doesn't require things to be "changed" inside.

    Sleeve to RNY

I'm not a revision, but an eight year "vet" on here. Most people don't lose weight nearly as fast after a revision as they do after a "virgin" surgery. And also, you do have some control over that. You probably won't be able to eat much for the first few weeks after the surgery because of the swelling and healing, but once you're through that, you do have some control over how many calories you're taking in. You can always bump them up a bit if you think you're starting to lose too much weight

    May 2007 Banders

Hi everyone, Mini here. Can't wait to read the posts. I see some of you have been doing great and some are having problems. I can relate to the problems. I had to go and have my fills all removed. Had a huge problem with acid reflux since around last march. Then over the past weekend while on vacation...lost 4 pds..couldn't eat anything..nothing would go down..pb's 3 to 4 times per day...even on fluid. Went to doc on tues and he sent me for xrays..yup, nothing would get through band while they were watching on the xray machine. He withdrew all fluid and I go back Nov 12 for a fill under floroscopy. He said that I may have to have the band removed. He is willing to try and give me a few more fills but at the first sign of trouble he is done with fills and will remove it. The ins won't cover a revision because I am at 29 BMI. He said if I regain the weight..then maybe I can get a revison. I don't want to regain the weight...but am very depressed, because, I am already starting to overeat and it's only thursday. I see my self looking like my old self by Jan. Sorry to be a downer.

Well I dont know if guy ever watched a show called BIG MEDICINE??? Well the father/son surgeon Dr. Robert Davis/Dr. Garth Davis. Thats who I a have been seeing. I am lucky to live in Houston. They are both very nice. I like Papa Davis though and he will be doing my revision. So I am having the band removed and having gastric bypass. They are still trying to get my insurance approved, but I hope for the best. I would like to schedule surjery for the first week of June as soon as the kids are out of school. I am scared, I cant seem to grasp the idea that I really dont eat much now, but with gastric I will eat less than I do now and loose weight???? I dont eat now. We will see!

Manatee....sorry to hear that you need a revision!!!! Your health is the most important thing though. Everyone is doing great!! My weight loss is soooooo slow.....so far this month I have lost 3 lbs. I am down to 171 lbs. I am okay.....but I am having a real hard time eating. I throw up a lot and it seems like even the softest, mushiest foods get stuck too. Some days I can eat shrimp, some mashed potatoes, veggies and be fine....the others I will be stuck all day. No rhime or reason??? Sandra 255h/242s/171c/165g

Jsrico, Also so happy to hear you are doing well after your revision. I hope you keep us posted on your progress. Margaret (NimbleBean) said it perfectly as well, it is important to keep connected. We need to help each other. NimbleBean, I am so excited about your progress as well. I keep plugging along, at about the same, you both are inspirations to me to keep at the battle. Hopefully my next post I can write that I have finally lost at least a pound or two! Keep up the good work!

    May 2007 Banders

Ok guys.....here I am once again! I went to a new band/weightloss doctor yesterday. The burping constantly was so embarrassing and irritating. Then a new symptom. I work nights so in the morning about 6 am I would hve coffee and a cookie or half a bagel. By 9:00bed....well I was throwing up in my sleep. Terrible. I went to the new doc...had a upper GI and my band had slipped over my stomach and was squeezing my esophagus. Insted of having a pouch in the stomach I have on in my esophagus. The esophagus should be as thick as a finger, but mine is so distended the the size of my arm. So the only revision I can have is gastric bypass. I never wanted that...that's why I chose the band . So I am terrified...they got remove the band and try to fix my esophagus. Uuuggg....doctor says 4 to 5 days in the hospital. With 4 kids and a demanding job that I just started 3 months I am sooooo scared!
  24. When I had my revision surgery from band to sleeve I was 182 day of surgery. Don't feel bad for doing what you need to do to take care of yourself.
