Can you ever drink soda again after surgery

You should always follow YOUR surgeon's recommendations. They have them for a reason. That being said, my plan does not prohibit carbonation after 6 months. I am 7 months post-op and I tried one sip of a carbonated drink a few weeks ago and it immediately came back up. For whatever reason, the fizz did NOT agree with me and it just sort of foamed its way out. For me, its not a big loss as I was never much of a soda drinker, but I know a lot of people who enjoy carbonated drinks and would prefer not to give them up. Definitely wait until you are fully healed, well established with your eating and water habits, and its cleared by your surgeon. But it definitely CAN work for some folks post-op!

    May 2022 surgery?

I'm on day 4 of my 2-week liquid diet. It has been rough. I'm not a fan of the broth but found that adding a bit of soup base and seasonings helps. I get now why people have posted about mourning their former life (even though I haven't even had surgery yet). There's no way around this though, I just have to keep pushing through. It's comforting to know that others are going through this with me!

    May 2022 surgery?

Day 3 diet of 2 weeks liquid ugh, I am hanging in there. But I dont know whats worse, being nervous/anxious about the surgery or dreading the constipation thats coming at some point!! lol
  4. Don't stock up too much before surgery; I did, and found that after surgery I couldn't stand the same drinks I chugged before! Ended up giving 3 12-packs away. Also-Ramen broth (of course, don't eat the noodles) was on my list of pre-op, and for some reason, it really, really helped.

    Help with nausea?

Agreed, some of the meds do make you drowsy. BUT you are also miserable. The first meds they put me on worked a little--but how can you drink if you feel that you are going to heave after a swallow? I couldn't smell food at work. Couldn't look at food. Sat at my desk with a trash can between my legs. Even with the two meds, I stare at my pills morning and night as obstacles. I have an appointment in a week, and plan to ask him to scope me, and if you knew me, doing that is the last thing I want. So you do what you think is best.

First plateau at 9 months post op

Three weeks is barely a stall! I know people who stay the same weight for months, then WHOOOSH! lose a few pounds. It is definitely harder to lose weight as you get closer to goal/a healthy weight.

    Eating too much

I think the quality of the food is more important than the quantity of the food. Plus, one day of eating 1400 calories is not going to cause you to gain weight. Were you eating protein or chips and cookies? Were you eating real food or drinking a milkshake? There were times at 11 weeks out when I would eat about 1000 calories or more, but I still lost weight. It was mostly days when I had exercised a lot or was awake for longer than normal (like had to get up at 3 AM for a flight). You should eat when you're hungry, but make sure your eating healthy food, and that you're experiencing TRUE hunger not head hunger, thirst, or some other emotion.

    Help with nausea?

I am 3 1/2 months out, and have struggled with nausea/queasiness every day. They say it will get better, but not yet. There ARE meds-ask your doctor! I am on two different ones, and after a couple of months, started taking more of them than prescribed--after looking them up and finding out his dosage was on the low end, and I was not going to poison myself. Call your doc-and be VOCAL!

    Regret and Depression

I felt the same regret the first 2 weeks after surgery. It was really intense and felt like I didn’t care about losing weight anymore. I didn’t even look at the scale, but I could still see my body changing. It is a lot like postpartum in a way, and I am grateful to have a lot of support at home. Everything is looking a lot better now that I’m doing at least puréed foods, but I still struggle a lot. The past couple have days have been great compared to those 2 really dark weeks. My care team told me that I will probably experience the stages of grief, and eventually it will get a lot better.
  10. Congratulations on reaching your surgery dates , Your all lucky when I had mine in August 2021 I had the milk liver shrinking diet 3 pints of semi skimmed milk and 2 50grm pots of yoghurt but could drink tea and coffee with milk that was bonus go to pintrestand type in biatric liver shrinking foods and the different stages after your op and how to make broths theirs loads of stuff on there that will help you and recipes good luck not to long now and after you'll not feel like eating for a bit anyway just make sure you drink fluids
  11. Hi Everyone, I hope you are all well. I'm just over 4 weeks out from having my gastric bypass and I really don't feel well at all! I'm dealing with constant nausea and sickness to the point I'm struggling to take my medication. I am only getting in about 500ml of liquid a day and I sometimes am able to eat a couple of teaspoons of soup or yoghurt. I was just wondering if anyone else went through this and if they had any advice? Does it get better? I'm feeling so lightheaded at the moment too. I have spoken to my medical team and they are helping but I just wanted to hear from people who have actually gone through gastric surgery? I'm just miserable with it all which sounds ungrateful, but the constant sickness is starting to get to me mentally too. Thank you for any advice you can give!
  12. I’m 3 weeks post-op and I had diarrhea for about 1 week. Now is mostly constipation, but I’m taking Miralax to help. Also my body just didn’t tolerate any protein shake whatsoever. I had a really hard time the first week, but warm fluids definitely helped. Once I could drink some milk or kefir or something else with protein in it I started to feel a little more human again.

    Answers for a Newbie?

    1. How long after surgery did it take for you to notice that you were losing weight? Literally - within days. My face started slimming out before I could comfortably get out of my recliner, haha. 2. What was one of your favorite items to eat right after surgery (would love recipes)? RIGHT after surgery I was on a clear liquid diet for a week, then full liquids for another 2 weeks. I really liked the Gatorade Zero protein - got some protein in, and it worked well to mix my daily dose of Miralax into. On the puree stage, I loved some beans (black or pinto) pureed and then heated up with a bit of cheese and a drizzle of taco sauce. YUMMM. 3. How long after surgery did it take you to feel amazing? I had a lot of post-operative pain because of some complications, so I struggled with pain for the first 3 weeks. Once that deep muscle pain finally went away, I felt awesome really quickly. About the time I got to start eating some foods instead of only liquids. 4. When exercising, was it hard to get in to the habit of doing so? If it was hard, how did you keep yourself motivated? Some days are harder than others for sure. I'm 2 months post-op, and am motivated by all the non-scale victories - like being able to fit into the jeans that were too tight when I had to go back to the office! And I'm finally under the weight limit for my bike so I can ride it this summer! I started with walking and at firt could only make it down the street and back, and now I walk every day because it's my calming practice. I exercise 60 minutes a day most days now at 2 months post-op, mostly walking but some swimming, strength training, VR boxing... I'm constantly amazed by how much more ENERGY I have now!!

    Eating too much

My team says to get up to a cup of food per meal over time. But, regardless of how much you have eaten, stop when you are full. I am only 4 weeks out, so I am around a half a cup and usually can't finish it.
  15. Well, while I haven't ever been diagnosed with PCOS, I am experiencing infertility. I was pregnant once, for 25 weeks and then my babe experienced fetal demise and passed. We got pregnant naturally but not since 2020. I just had RNY on March 8th and I'm hoping we see a positive test in our future, again. Infertility is frustrating and painful. just hang in there. I had the surgery for fertility reasons, too. Hoping this provides my body room for my eggs to release freely and to safely bear another child. Congrats on taking control of your life and your circumstances. I'll be following you and your story ... maybe we both will get our rainbows! edit: Not sure if you have it or have heard of it, but I use an app called Glow to track my cycles. There is a community section on there (similar to this) where you can search for weight loss surgery, vsg, gastric bypass, etc. and read the stories and experiences of people on there. You can, of course, post as well. It's a little more focused on the PCOS and fertility angle than just general weight loss. Food for thought.

    surgeon

Congrats! This is an exciting step in the process. I think its absolutely normal to have the jitters. Its a BIG step and a potentially life changing decision. I was extremely anxious when I met with my surgeon (and the 3 others I didn't go with over the years). He was very understanding and made sure all of my questions were answered. I subsequently had similar conversations with the cardiologist and anesthesiologist before surgery, and felt equally heard and understood by them. Hope you have a similar experience and come away feeling confident and ready to proceed!
  17. In don’t really go out of my way to meet any protein goals anymore, but its Actually its quite easy to get it in for me… my share of that particular packed salad had 29g of protein (mostly from the chicken and cheese). That particular day i ended up with 93g of protein by bedtime (i had meatballs for dinner that night) I did a quick look into MFP to see where i stood on protein for the last little while and it showed: 2 weeks ago: 530g (Avg 75g/day) 3 weeks ago: 836g (Avg 119g/day) 4 weeks ago: 489g (Avg 69g/day) *no complete weekly info this week or last cuz i was out of town and wasn’t logging.

Alcohol is a Transfer Addiction !!

ANY addiction can be a transfer addiction after a bariatric surgery messes with your food addiction. About a year after surgery, I noticed I liked to go gambling more. (not an insane amount, but instead of going maybe once every three months or so and taking $50, I was going maybe twice a month and taking $100. One month, I went once a week) I'm thrifty, so I noticed the casino losses in my budget right away and said....oh, hells no, this has to stop. So, I quit gambling entirely. Dodged the bullet on that one, thank goodness. But....of course.... that void looked for another way to rear its head. I started buying way too much **** on Ebay and Amazon. Late night purchases. Ugh. When I identified that issue....I quit, and promptly started hitting thrift stores and buying too much crap. Just kept swapping out one source of instant gratification for another....kinda like food. Addiction is a real thing. And finding healthy ways to deal with that need for instant gratification (and the hidden **** that drives it) will always be something I deal with. Very often when I hear people talk about regain... they will beligerantly insist that they don't have problems with food addiction or disordered eating. And I always think....oye. This ain't gonna end well for you. Admitting you have a problem is the first step, imo. And I know that sounds cheesy...but it's true. You need to get your head around your blind spots and confront them. Understand the behavior so you can change the behavior. I'm 4.5 years out, maintaining my weight loss (very proud of this)....but more aware than ever before how food addiction has impacted my life and my habits. Also, more aware of what drives my addictive behaviors. Still workin on it, man it's hard! Parts get easier, parts get harder. Just gotta keep fighting the good fight:)

    Eating too much

Good morning I’m sorry you’re not feeling good about your choices. It sounds like you tracked your food intake which is excellent. So what consisted of the 1400 calories? Like what did you eat exactly? I ask because of nutrient purposes. You might have eaten more nutrient dense calories than you think. Also watch your hunger signal vs thirst signal they can we’ll be same as well as stomach acid. Sometimes in the beginning weeks after my sleeve surgery my stomach would be growling a little bit after I ate I quickly caught on that it was my stomach digesting what I ate. lastly definitely reach out to your Dietitian or Nutritionist and see how they can answer this question for you from a clinical stand point. good luck to you

    Weight Loss Stall

it's the infamous "three-week stall" - right on schedule! Do I search on this site for it. When I last checked, there were over 17,000 posts on it (and no, I am NOT kidding...)

    Gall Bladder problems After VSG?

Same here, I was prescribed that also. Not till 4 weeks post op though so I just started it.
  22. Hi Juniper, I was in about the same situation. I got my band in 2012 and started having significant reflux last summer. I had my band unfilled which helped the reflux but I packed on 40 pounds. I went to Inova Bariatrics and talked about revision to bypass; they said I had to go through the whole program again, which I did. I did not have the supervised diet part and I continued to gain weight until I went on the 2-week liquid diet just before surgery. I had the band removed and the bypass done March 21. I have Federal Blue Cross and they approved as soon as I met the requirements, including cardiac clearance, primary care physician clearance, etc. I don't quite get where your diet supervisor is coming from; I had comorbidities in addition to the high BMI - reflux was one of them (high bp was the other). I think your doctor is right that the reflux should be enough because reflux is one of the signatures of the band. I wish I had known that in 2012 - I would have done the bypass then instead. If you stay with that practice you might be stuck (pardon the lapband pun) doing as the diet supervisor commands. Different practices have different rules. I like my practice very much but they're in Fair Oaks and Woodbridge, likely a huge trip for you. Remember, even though the pre-op diet is very difficult the reward will be worth it. You can do this!

    Eating too much

I feel so lost and angry yesterday I consumed 1400 calories at only 11 weeks post op gastric sleeve. 2 weeks ago I started feeling a lot more hungry so increased my calorie intake to 900-1000 because I thought if I’m hungry, then eat. when I used to diet before the surgery I was on 1500 calories so to me it’s absolutely bizzare that I’ve had 85% of my stomach removed and can still eat 1400? can anyone please give me some advice? I’m hitting my protein everyday keeping and carbs to a minimum.

    Fluid Intake

Yea, I was given 1 oz cups and told to get AT LEAST 3 sips out of it. It only lasted a few days and then I could drink the 1oz cup in 1 sip.

    Gall Bladder problems After VSG?

Gall bladder removal is not uncommon for anybody. Gall stones can form for a couple of reasons: high cholesterol, rapid & excessive weight loss, menopause, or high bilirubin levels. So it makes sense why many bariatric patients have their’s removed at some point. Some people can have gall stones for years that only rumble a bit so they don’t know they have them. They’re discovered because of the pre surgical tests so some people have their gall removed during their weight loss surgery. My stone was discovered during a scan to see why my liver function was off about 7 months after surgery. I’d have no symptoms but last June I really knew about it - very painful!!! So my gall was removed about two years after my sleeve surgery. Mine could have formed because of the weight loss, menopause or because I have high bilirubin levels. It was an easy surgery. My surgeon used the same incisions from my sleeve surgery & I was home the next day. I did have more muscular discomfort & gas pain though. My diet is generally lowish fat so I don’t have issues with that. But I have noticed every couple of weeks that I have a bout of diarrhoea (manifests more quickly than ordinary tummy upset attacks). My sister-in-law is the same. We think it’s a build up of digestive acids because the gall isn’t there to regulate it anymore.
