  1. @@ExplosiveAmnesia I get what you are saying about the psychological aspect of weight loss/maintenance. Here are the differences for me. In the past, I have successfully lost weight through diet and exercise many times. My most successful "diet", I lost 90 pounds in one year (more than I lost in my first year post-WLS). The way I lost those 90 pounds was to literally track every single bite of food that I ever ate and every minute of exercise I ever did. I had a BodyBugg to help with tracking my calorie burn every day. I had to be perfect and meticulous and it worked! However, that's not a realistic way for someone to live their entire life. No one can be prefect every day forever, especially not me! One of the main things that sustained me mentally through that period was the belief that one day I would be "done" and that I wouldn't have to keep tracking every single thing I ate and did every single day for the rest of my life... just until I reached goal. With my sleeve, I still have to eat right 95% of the time. I still have to exercise regularly. But I don't track my food every day. If I miss a day of exercise here and there, I don't beat myself up about it. I don't have the same "all or nothing" mentality that I did in the past, because I know my sleeve is forever. I'm not going to be "done". There is no end in sight. This is my new life and I will just live like this every day. So if I miss a day of exercise or I eat something "bad" one day, it's only one day in the grand scheme of my whole life. It has allowed me to have a much more realistic outlook and not be so OCD. So it has definitely helped me with the psychological component as well. Also, I've really had to find other ways of processing and dealing with my emotions. When I was on diets in the past, I could technically still eat my emotions when things got really bad, I just tracked it all and tried to make up for the extra calories with exercise. So the opportunity to eat my emotions was still there. With my sleeve, I couldn't eat my emotions if I wanted to, so I really did have to find other ways of coping.

How/What do you tell your kids?

Mine are 7 and 3. I never presented my "weight" as my problem to my kids. I don't want to mess with their little minds or feed into negative social constructs. I am all about body acceptance and positively as long as you are healthy. I told them, Mommy's stomach got stretched out and so the doctor is going to make it the right size again. They handled it well. My 3 year old is the cutest--he makes us "dinner" using play-dough and he makes mine the smallest for my little tummy.
  5. Hello fellow Albertan - I went camping at Rocky Mtn House earlier in the summer and enjoyed it quite a bit! Re: air trapped in the chest. I didn't have any of that post-op gas pain in my shoulders that some others referred to, so if you have good analgesia (I had a spinal in addition to general), you might not experience it at all. As far as later on - I do feel trapped burps in my tummy sometimes, but they feel no worse than my pre-surgery burps did. I just try to let the air come out, but even if I can't, the discomfort usually subsides after a few seconds. I've got lots of air coming out the other end, though, haha. Re: losing weight pre-op. I was almost the same weight as you are (200-202), so I didn't HAVE to lose weight. I actually ate whatever I wanted for the 5 weeks after getting my surgery date without feeling guilty. I put on a few pounds and went into surgery at 208, BUT I had completely gotten the whole ice cream - bacon - cheesecake - Kit Kat thing out of my system. During my last week, I didn't even have any Desserts even though they had them available for every meal at my school caf - I just didn't want them anymore. Less than a week after having the VSG, I've already dropped those residual pounds. Of course, the better you eat before the surgery and the less you weigh, the easier the recovery will be and the less you'll need to wait to get to goal weight. So while I of course wouldn't endorse a free-for-all for a month before the surgery, I wouldn't beat yourself up if you are unable to lose weight. You are not that big, and unless there's a major issue with your liver size that's already been identified, you will probably be fine.

  7. Hey everyone! So I'm still on my 90 day weight loss management, and my provider has me on a low calorie high Protein diet which I'm sure we all are on. So this is my 3rd week of the diet, I've been really strict with myself and taking it completely seriously. I haven't had fast food or any dessert food in this 3 week period. The only problem I am having is that I haven't really lost weight! I have maybe lost 2-3lbs but it is constantly going up and down. TMI ALERT: Constipation is also being an issue which also effects the number on the scale. So my question is, has anybody else gone through this issue? If so what were some things you did to help. With the way I am eating and basically living off protein supplements and chicken, I thought I would have lost at least 5lbs by now. I have increased my Fiber as well as taking Probiotics but it's not working. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  8. I was wholly unprepared for the psychological aspects of the journey to bariatric surgery so I sit down to write this in the hopes that you might not make the same mistake that I did in taking this so lightly. When I first started out, I thought this would be similar to the journeys of the other weight loss attempts in my life so I totally discounted the psychology. In fact, I did not even want to think about matters related to the mind. It was the pre-op diet that forced me to take a very long and deep-seated look at the exact cause of my obesity; food is love, relief from clinical depression, and medicine. The realization hit me a week and a half into this pre-op diet that I am no longer going to be able to use the medicine that worked so well. I am a survivor of almost twenty years of verbal and psychological abuse from peers, teachers, parents, and co-workers. Food was what was simultaneous keeping me from suicide and basically killing me. If ever more morbid a paradox existed, I am at a loss for thinking of any. Even the times when I was thin, I always knew if things went downhill, food was merely walking distance away. I have had a range of emotions from anger and hatred towards those whom abused me, to hope and forgiveness. I write this a day and a half before my surgery as I go through a treasure trove of old digital photos of me in different stages of my life. I also went through and organized all of my music. It was something that necessarily had to be done because it's an important part of closure that I never did. I looked at the albums of photos with the two women whom ever had the courage to love me at one point in time or another. I kept them because I was grasping at straws to keep from going over a cliff. I hoped that one day one of them might be a part of my life again. However both are married now, and hindsight being 20/20, they would not be ideal mates for me nor I for them. I looked back on those photos with a mixture of pride, happiness, and sadness. Purging the photos gave me the closure that I needed. Love was possible twice, it will be possible again. I want to stop the cycle of self-loathing. I am not going into the operating room out of self-disgust, I am going out of self-compassion.

    High Risk?

I am 18 months and and find myself pregnant and I was NOT trying! (I think we all turn super fertile after major weight loss) I think at 10 months out you are getting to a place where you can start to get pregnant and start nourish a baby. Ideal, probably not... High risk? probably not.. a little extra monitoring? yes, but that's ok! Good luck!

    High Risk?

Before being sleeved I asked my surgeon about this and he said he doesn't recommend women get pregnant until maintenance, the pregnancy can be healthy if monitored. They just don't recommend it because we get the surgery to lose weight. But he gave me the winky eye as to say don't worry, if you get pregnant a year after we will monitor you to be healthy. I have no co-morbidities. I think you'll be safe if you're healthy overall. Congratulations! I still have to wait a while but I have baby fever. Everyday is a reminder to stay focused. Can you keep up posted on your progress? Are you losing or gaining weight? I wondered if the sleeve makes you feel MORE nausea since the stomach is more sensitive. Oh just the thought of more nausea I can't handle. Hope you're doing well.
  11. I was at the borderline of a BMI of 35/36 and I have done just fine losing weight. Just like everyone else. I don't eat those foods you mentioned because I eat high protein with veggies. Sometimes I do eat a little bit of fruit to boot.. You will do just fine my dear.....Hang in there.....
  12. My goal is to lose 38% of my total starting body weight. I state it that way because people (those who I've confided in) tell me "you don't need that surgery." Even my bariatric surgeon (who I think is great) looked at me as they were prepping me for surgery and said "no one would believe you are a bariatric patient." These statements bother me because this is not an easy decision for anyone who makes it. I am 4' 11". I have never been 5' and will never be. My BMI is 35.3. I am 57 yrs old. I have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic, have joint pains... I can go on. At my highest I weighed 175 lbs. My body knows I'm obese. I have lost a lot of weight, several times and in-between I was either losing or gaining. I always gained more back. My sister (5' 4") and I lost a lot together a few years and then we both gained it all back and then some. Last year my sister confided in me that she was 4 weeks post surgery for the sleeve. I was shocked. I wasn't in the mindset to start another diet again yet but surgery seemed extreme. I read her brochures and listened to her process and still doubted. I saw her again this last summer (lives a couple of states away) and after 8 months, she lost 65 lbs and looks great! I watched her and she behaved "normally". She didn't dwell on food and she didn't require a special diet. She was enjoying her new life with her new body. I was tired of failed diets. I went to the next information session on bariatric surgery. Three months later I had sleeve surgery. I don't want to review my status right now because I know I am healing and changing and any issues are temporary. I can tell you that I am down 15 lbs (10 day pre-surgery diet and first days of clear liquids). Kudos to my sister who is my support group.

    Raging hormones

As you lose weight, estrogen that is stored in fat cels re-enter your circulatory system. You probably do need an adjustment But it might also be a mourning of foods. Both are real possibilities. Start with your bariatric Dr. He or she can guide you best. Good luck.
  14. I’m 73 days postop and my weight loss has stalled. I have lost 34 pounds since surgery, but haven’t lost any weight in the last 2 weeks. HELP! What’s wrong?????
  15. Had my WLS on Nov. 11.15 and I lost like crazy the first 2 weeks, I know that was all water weight. Then I would not lose anything up until a week ago and I gained 4 pounds and im just sitting there. I walk a mile a day and do Extreme hip hop step 30 min. every day. I am only eating soft foods at ½ cup 3-4 times a day. I am also 100% Vegan. I am getting in my water and my protein. I called my Nutritionist and pretty much got no help. I am really starting to freak out, and of course I live in the mountains where there is no physical support group. Can anyone tell me if this is normal? Or has it happened to someone else? Am I doing something wrong or did the WLS just NOT work for me? Honestly I was losing more before I had the WLS, I lost 101 lbs on my own before :-(
  16. Congratulations on your weight loss thus far. Pre-op and post-op weight loss both counts towards your goal and 121 pounds is significant. It is common to hit stalls during the "Weight Loss" phase and even gaining a few pounds during the process does occur. The three most important requirements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are meeting the daily Protein, Fluid, and Vitamin requirements. It looks like you are getting good exercise. Sometimes individuals after surgery go all-out on exercise, they convert some of their fat into muscle and muscle weighs more than fat. Thus they may experience a slight weight gain in the process. But your level of exercise does not appear too strenuous. So let us look at protein. Your daily protein requirement is satisfied by the protein you obtain from meals combined with the protein from supplements (Protein shakes and protein bars). In the beginning the amount of protein from your meals at a 1/4 cup per meal is so low that it is negligible. But as time goes on and your meal volume increases, the meal portion becomes important. The protein shakes that you are consuming contains calories and they can add up. So an important strategy as you progress to larger food volumes is to concentrate on meals that contain significant amount of protein so you can start to reduce the amount of protein shakes you take each day (and the calories these shakes contain). As my meal volume increased, I went for 3 shakes a day, down to 2, down to 1 and then down to none. When I hit my first stall, this was the strategy that I used and it worked for me.

    Overfilled advice from Poodles

Ergh, I hope never to go through this. I hope you're feeling better. Yet another lesson that we cannot rely on our bands to be so tight that we simply cannot eat very much. You just have to leave enough space to eat real food and call in some self control, sensibility and willpower to use the band wisely, its the biggest (and most difficult) lesson we all have to learn. Its a tool, not a total fix (dammit). At the very least I bet you would have liked to see a bit more weight off for all that suffering.

18 months out and need advice

I agree, I would set up an appt with your doctor so you can let him/her know where you are at and get a solid assessment as to whether you need a fill or not. I am a year out from surgery and based on my weight I am eating approximately 1000-1200 calories per day. I am supposed to be getting in between 70-90 grams of Protein per day. I have to admit I usually struggle with getting in all of the protein, but I try. I track my food on The Daily Plate (Livestrong.com) and use that to help me know where I am at on a daily basis. It will also let you track your exercise and it is a great way to know if you are getting in the nutrition you need. I also agree about setting up a meeting with your nutritionist. They might have some great suggestions on how you can structure your meals and make sure that you are eating enough. Also make sure to check out the food and nutrition threads for good ideas and I also like the blog: theworldaccordingtoeggface.com Good luck with getting back on your journey, recognizing it is half the battle!
  21. Hi all  I am getting banded on 09-10-10 and am looking online (maybe too much!) for information on the lap band. I know what I am signing up for... but I stumbled upon a website that people post their negative lap band experiences on. A few of them are saying they throw up every meal...even if it is a small Protein meal like chicken, tuna or yogurt. This has me freaked out. I know that the process is hard...and I know that I will be working "with" my band to achieve weight loss and a healthy life...does anyone have any thoughts? Thanks! 23. Welcome Anitalynn!! I am new as well, and have decided that the band is definitely for me. I have gotten tons of info from LBT....good & bad...that has helped me come to this decision. That is in addition to prayers asking for guidance. Alexandra - I love what you have to say. This is a reality check and you help put eating into perspective, especially for us newbies. Your experience and advice gives me great inspiration....THANKS! I went on the Optifast program last year and lost over 30 lbs in 3 mos doing the first phase which basically liquids (this was a physician controlled program). The most important thing I took away from this program is that I AM "addicted" to food just like a alcoholic or a drug addict. I use food for reasons other than to sustain my body. I also asked the question as to why should I get the band when I know I can lose weight by eating right and exercising, which I need to do in order for the band to be successful. WELL, I've learned from many experiences here at LBT that the band is not what makes weightloss successful, it's the person and the band is only a "tool" (heard that many times here) to be used. I look for the band to do just what Alexandra said. For me personally, I intend to read Dr Phil's book, The Ultimate Weight Solution, and take a deep look into the reasons I eat emotionally. This emotional need will still be there with or without the band and I need to come up with other ways of dealing with the stresses that lead me to eat. I look at the band as a tool that will help keep me honest in my food choices so I can work on those other issues. Keep researching and getting feedback so you can make a decision that is best suited for you. I can't wait to get my band, but I don't think it is for everyone. Best of luck regardless of which direction you go....hope we all get the chance to know you better. :clock:
  24. I was banded on 9/05 and at first it was kind of unusual, scary and kind of hard. The first 10 days was easy for me to do liquids because I was scared of slipping and erosion and hernia. I was not hungry and it seems like day 11 I am starvinggggggggggggg. Without any restriction I was able to eat and that was what I was doing until my first fill in 11/05. Still I had no restriction but I did get some food stuck so I started really watching what I ate and started weighing my food making sure I did not eat over 8 ounces but I had these snack attacks and I did not lose any weight in November because I snacked every day (chips, candy, cookies, donuts). I truly believe that if you excercise and work with the band you can lose. I am currently on my 3rd fill 2.5cc and I am totally restricted. My first was 1.5cc no restriction, 2nd fill 2.0cc no restriction. I was getting depressed by then. My 3rd fill 12/05 and I am sooooooo restricted. I have lost 36 Pounds since 9/05 and I have went from a size 18 to 16. You have to get used to everything, your mind, body and the band. Cause you really dont know what to expect and what to feel. I think if was not for website I would be half crazy not knowing if what i am going through is normal or if what i am feeling is normal. I have not had any complications or any pb's (vomiting). If you decide to chose the band Good Luck!!

    Weight stuck :(

I got stuck about 9-10 months post op also. I reached a weight some where in the 170"s and just sort of sat there with only losing a few pounds here and there for about 6 months. I know that is probably not what you wanted to hear but it happens, I about drove myself crazy trying to figure out what I was doing wrong or what I needed to do. I analyzed my food diaries and all I could see was I was always over in fat and carbohydrates and under in calories, below 1200 and sometimes below 1000. I talked with my nut. at the doctors office and she suggested I increase my protein and increase my cardio from 3 days a week to 30 min daily. I did all of this and finally started losing again. The one thing that did happen to me was I lost inches when not losing weight. On the months I had a large weight lose I lost little inches and on the months I had a small weight loss I lost a lot of inches. Just have patience, I know that is hard to do some times when you want this so bad but patience pays off, believe me it did for me and I was not aways perfect and did allow my self an occasional splurge. Good luck!
