    Wanting to help but how?

How nice that you are so supportive of your wife! You wouldn't believe how many husbands are not. I am lucky with mine. With that said, my doctor wants me on clear liquids for 3 weeks postop. (I get sleeved on Monday.) This is to give the stomach time to fully heal. Perhaps your wife's stomach needs more time to adjust. I would suggest she go back to clear liquids, then try again in another week. BTW, there is a forum here especially for family members of patients, although I think it is empty right now. You might enjoy connecting with other spouses here. Good luck to your wife!

    Wanting to help but how?

One more suggestion: some people tolerate warm liquids better than cold liquids. She might want to try hot tea or sugar free hot cocoa. I agree with the other folks, it takes time to get used to the sleeve, but it gets easier over time, and I think she'll be fine. The first couple of weeks are the toughest!! Tell her to hang in there!

    Dollar store Post Op

Wow that is a really good idea! I am going to go to the Dollar Tree and try to find these as well! I am at week 11 of my Options class and I am researching the Vitamins I need to take and next week we discuss diet.
  5. I was sleeved January 9th 2013 and everything was going great and then on February 16th I started having a pain in my stomach like someone punched me whenever I ate or drank anything and I mean ANYTHING. I went from eating 6 small meals a day to a couple of bites every other day just so I wouldn't have to feel the pain. It has since increase in not only frequentcy but it happens without me having to be eating or drinking. I have had sooo many tests done to find the source. Nothing but gallstones or so they thought. Two weeks ago I had them removed along with my galbladder. Today was my two weeks followup. The pain is still there. My surgeon is all out of answers and seem very confused by my stomach pain. His only answer was that this may have to be my new normal...What!!! Nothing normal about this punched in the gut pain. I will waste away to nothing. I need some relief. Anyone have any answers or have the same issue??? On the bright side being almost 4 months out, I have lost 56 pounds. Aroseofbeauty

    Too soon?

I waited and waited to get my surgery process started because things kept popping up to delay it. Once my husband said he was on board with me getting that started, I was bing-bang-boom, "surgery's in a month." He was a little taken aback and only later I found out that he was scared about me going into surgery and potentially not coming out the other end. It's important to calm those nerves and give him the same confidence you have. I did this by giving stats and reviews for my surgeon and why he was (and is) the best. On the other side, I can say that as much as I thought I wanted the surgery as fast as humanly possible, I was not mentally prepared for the surgery in a month's time. All my duck's fell into place fast and I was so caught up in getting my pre-op tests and requirements done and then getting financing in order, that I didn't take time to prepare myself. I wish I would have worked out my relationship with food before surgery and really analyzed how I got to where I was. It might have better prepared me for the first couple weeks post-op and gotten me in the mind set to hit the ground running (not literally) right out the gate. Good luck to you in whatever you decide!

    What Does This Mean?

I don't know that there is such a thing as normal. Everyone is different. I'm 4 weeks post-op tomorrow and I am healing very slowly. I can't eat and drink as much as some or most people at this same stage. Every thing has to be mushed up and real creamy, no chunks, and not too thick. Drinking is slow going with resting between sips. Lot's of girgiling, burping and hiccups. I believe my acid relflux is slowing things down and I take Nexium and drink Mylanta as needed during the day. My doctor does not allow coffee, says it's slows down the healing process, but I started drinking coffee with lots of milk and creamer after 3 weeks. You are only 1 week out, it takes time and make sure you get in fluids. I was not a milk drinker before this surgery, but I am now. Skim milk goes down easy for me. You're in the hardest time right now, it will get better. Good that you're seeing your doctor tomorrow. Let him know your fluid intake.
  8. I am really disappointed in myself... I started the day off with Protein shake and one bottle of Water... then it went down hill from there.... with all the running around preparing for a house full tomorrow... I just realized (at 9pm at night) I haven't had anything to eat since this morning and that was my shake... and 1 16oz bottle of water... I am hanging my head in shame... I don't know why, but during the week, I am so regimented I have every meal and snack packed & ready for the work week... but when the weekend comes, it all falls apart... every weekend I say Ok I am going to stay on track, and continue... but I don't... Has this happen to any one else?

    Progress Report

Hi.. Just wanted to give a progress report.. I was banded on Feb. 13th, and had my one-week post op appt. According my doctors scale, I've lost 15 pounds this week, and a total of 21 pounds since Feb. 8th. I would like to think you all for your support and encouragement during the rough first couple of days. Thanks Again, Ashley

    Too soon?

Sounds like maybe he isn't mentally ready yet. I would normally say that as long as you are ready, its your choice, but I know that our SO's are in this too and they are important also. If I may suggest, ask him more specific questions, rather than a broad general "why is it too soon". Maybe like "Are you nervous that its too soon?" "Are you worried about the surgery itself?" "When do you think it is a good time?" And be sincere about it. It is new to him too and because it isn't directly affecting him, yet, he may feel it is being rushed, while you know what you are in for because of the reading and searching you have done to prepare. I think it ultimately has to be your decision on when, but his input may sway you to hold off a week or so. Hopefully he isn't thinking 6 mos. or something. Best of luck!

    Pain Pain Pain

Take your pain Meds as directed. Don't wait for pain to come in. I got a sleep aid from my dr after week 1 cause I had massive gas pain. Get up and move, even if you just walk around the house. Week 1 is the toughest. I am 3 months out and things are great !!! Keep going, you will do great !!

    Its finally here!

Good luck Cathy and ArixS. No need to be nervous. These doctors know what they are doing and you will be in good hands. The surgery takes 30 to 45 minutes and its over. Granted that first week is a bugger but after that its smooth sailing. You will soon be steadily losing and looking good.
  13. I have been able to eat since the 2nd week out, I had no problems with food digestion and my doctor gave me the green light to eat anything I could tolerate. So far I can eat anything except I became lactose intolerant. It scares me that I can eat so easily. I see my doctor again on Wed. the 14th will post what he tells me. Thanks for your response I am also watching other peoples replies.

    Is this normal?

I have been banded 2 weeks today. Am I being impatient because I haven't lost any weight in the last week even though I'm sticking to plan, still feeling some restriction, and walking every night? I suppose the week prior to surgery and the week after spoiled me considering that I lost 15lbs during this time. Now, nothing.. i may have even put back on a pound or two. I'm sad..:cry My first fill isn't until the day before Thanksgiving.. 11/21.

how long were you off work

I'm a hairstylist so I'm on my feet the entire work day. I took 10 days off, and on the 11th day had to call and cancel my clients because I just wasn't ready. I started back after 2 weeks exactly and was good. Tired but good. Sent from my iPhone using RNYTalk

how long were you off work

A week and 2 days, then part time 3 days, then back full time at 2 weeks. I'm a family practice physician assistant. I walk and talk for a living. I spent much more time than usual sitting the first couple weeks and I won't lie, I'm still exhausted at the end of the day!!! (I'll be 4 weeks out tomorrow) HW 312, pre-op (lap-band) 294, pre-op (RNY) 255, surgery date 2/11/13, goal weight 154, current weight 231.4

how long were you off work

1 week off. I don't think I could have worked earlier. Too tired and needed to heal. I did go to college that first week and shopping at the mall of America, feeling ok. Everyone is different.

    Skinny Minny! Me? Seriously?!

@@jenkbacon I am 6 weeks out and returned to work after 4 weeks. I got some of the same reactions. "wow you look great!" or "you dont look sickly at all!" (from friends at work) or "have you lost weight??" and my all time favorite "how do you feel?" Its like they expect me to look and feel like I am on my death bed or something. I feel great no doubt but are they wishing I had complications??? I had one co-worker tell me that I am wearing my clothes big on purpose. Really??? I am not running out to buy new clothes just one month after surgery. I am wearing my regular work clothes for now. And absolutely I get the questions 'what are you doing?" "what are you eating?" I dont know if it's because I work in the medical field and diet seems to always be the topic around there or what. Maybe its different in a regular work environment. For now I enjoy the compliments, but hoping that soon the spotlight fades.

    Skinny Minny! Me? Seriously?!

Congrats on your success this far! My situation is a little different because there was only 1 close friend at work who knew I had surgery (others have figured it out since then I think) and there was this one woman who just would not leave me alone. She was obsessed with my weight loss. "What are you doing?" "What are you eating" "When will you stop" etc etc etc. She made a comment to me at least once daily. It made me really uncomfortable, but now 18 months out, no one really mentions it anymore. They've adjusted to the "New me" and your co-workers will too. But expect lots of compliments in that first year of active weight loss! Even today someone came back to work who I had resigned a couple weeks ago for visit and we hugged and she said "Oh, you're as thin as a rail!!" That's definitely not something I'm used to hearing! Also weird is new people who have started or I've met at my work, church, kids' school since I lost 140+ pounds. It's so weird to me that they never knew me as overweight. Sometimes it will come up and I will show them a before and after picture and they are floored. It's kind of cool the first time someone says "I never would have known you were overweight". Good luck to you on the rest of your journey!
  21. I had my VSG on 1/20/2015. I told a few close friends I work with and of course my family prior. When I started my preop diet, people were quite nosey, so I was honest about my plans for surgery and really have had positive feedback. I returned to work after 4 weeks down 15.5 pounds (I lost 11 pounds in the 6 months working with the dietitian and 10 pounds on the preop diet), so I was at a total weight loss of 36.5 lbs. I really hadn't seen much of a difference personally in my appearance, but my scrubs were definitely looser. Everybody, made comments! It was crazy. I was very upfront about surgery and the response has been overwhelmingly supportive. The only somewhat negative experience I had was a doctor that I love dearly come up to me in excitement about losing weight and I told her about surgery, but she took a step back from me and stopped talking to me. She is overweight herself, but I was shocked at the look of disappointment she gave me. I'm now at the 8 week mark and I'm down 43.5! So not much of a change since I went back, but yesterday everybody again was commenting. Is the weight loss that different with WLS? I haven't changed much in 4 weeks, but I had multiple people use the phrase "skinny minny" yesterday! I'm a little overwhelmed by the attention. It's a very weird situation for me because I've always preferred to be a fly on the wall and now all of a sudden I'm front and center. Have any of you had this experience? Any advice? It's definitely not a bad thing and it is positive that people are so encouraging. I'm just not used to attention like that. It's a very new experience for me! ☺️

    Weight Watchers post op?

My NUT told me that a lot of his patients that have kept the weight off long term did weight watchers about 2/3rds of the way to goal. He said he thought it was helpful because of the meetings, teaming up with friends and the weigh in's each week. The plan itself...the "meals" are still going to be too much for us. Our food choices will just be different than everyone else's because we need to eat really small meals and high Protein. I know the program too. Did it several times...very successful once, a long time ago. I just don't think I am to the point where I want to pay a weekly fee. I'm still paying for the surgery.....and will for another 2 yrs, more than likely. And I pay Planet Fitness each month too. A lot of my "me" money is already going out the door for this. But.....if I ever get to the point where I feel I'm getting off track, I will definitely revisit WW's. Also, I am at a weird point. Lots of stalls. Its discouraging. I am still well within the guidelines of the diet but I have noticed that I tend to eat a little more carbs than I did in the beginning. So....that's going to stop. I have gained 1lb since starting weight training last week (have only been doing cardio up till now) I'm hoping the weight training will help with this stall, lose, stall, lose cycle I've been in. Maybe after I put on a little muscle I can dip back into the carbs??

    Going crazy

When I was pre-op I was completely obsessed, too. Couldn't come fast enough. Here are some things I did: Kicked up the exercise like crazy so I could get that habit going before surgery. I hired a personal trainer and in the 8 weeks leading up to surgery lost 4% body fat and gained 10 pounds of muscle (weight stayed the same because I was borderline and couldn't lose). Cleaned all the big off season clothes out of my closet. My surgery was June 9th, so I bagged up every big, oversized heavy sweater I owned. I kept the bags until after surgery just in case for some reason it got cancelled or something but donated them as soon as my surgery was over. I also made sure to keep myself busy with supportive friends. I reconnected with old friends I hadn't seen in a while and we started a walking group on Sunday afternoons. The time will pass and you'll be on the loser's bench before you know it.

has anyone had a lapband on the NHS in kent

Hi I am on the waiting list for the op in Romford, Essex. From the first appointment at the hospital to now has been 18 months. I was referred by my GP, I saw a medical doctor for over a year while he tried diets and visits to the dietician and then finally he referred me to the surgeon. Since I saw the surgeon I waited 6 weeks to see if my funding had been approved then I was on the list. They tell me the op should be done within 18 weeks of getting funding so that works out to the middle of Feb 2010. I am hoping something comes up sooner and I have an appointment with the dietician to start the low carb liver shrinking pre op diet on the 4th of Dec. It seems like a long time but what is the alternative? It really has gone by quicker than I thought and I am really glad I stuck it out. I could not afford to have the op privately so there was no other choice for me. Just persevere and take all the help and advice offered and dont get downhearted. The first time went to the hospital they told me to stop eating biscuits and crisps!!! Seriously if it was that simple I would be thin by now. But I kept going back, never missing an appointment not matter how much I thought they were a waste of time, and here we are. Good luck, you will get there in the end
  25. I am with Foxbins on this one! My plan tells me to measure my food and I do. I eat 1/2 c of dense Protein, which is about 2-2.5 oz three times a day. I usually can finish it, but it depends on what it is. I try to eat a bite or two of veggies at dinner and a bite or two of fruit with Breakfast and lunch. Sometimes I can't, but I try. I always eat my protein first and if I have room, I do. Most of the time, I don't have room for anymore. If I ate sliders or didn't eat my protein first, I am sure I could eat ALOT more, but I follow the rules and therefore, I can't! I sometimes have a couple Snacks during the day to bring my calories up. Kelly
