    Trying not to give up.

Hi, everyone. I haven't checked in for a very long time, mostly because I was becoming so discouraged by my lack of success since I was banded in August. After 2 fills, I was at 6 cc's and felt almost zero restriction. Still, I want to be honest and acknowledge that I haven't been a 100% compliant patient either. I haven't exercised very much, I've indulged in too much alcohol and I've had a very hard time not drinking during/after meals. I had my 3rd fill today and I'm hoping that it will make a difference. I'm now at 7 cc's in a Realize band. DH and I are leaving for Hawaii in 10 days. I'd really hoped to be much thinner by the time we made the trip but that's not going to happen. Oh well, it's better to be fat in Hawaii than fat at home, right? I'm planning on doing a lot of walking while I'm there and I've already checked into the availability of a gym at our hotel (they have one). I feel like I'm starting over. Wish me luck! I'm really impressed by how well the rest of you are doing! I hope I can achieve similar success.

    Trying not to give up.

I can totally understand being discouraged. I was banded in April 2009 and I have a 9cc in a 14cc band. I haven't been on this site in a while because I feel like such a failure. Along with the medical conditions that lead me to the LB, I am also peri-menopausal. I crave carbs, I can go a couple of days without them then BAM, they come back. I really want to commend those of you who seem to have gotten a handle on this thing. Thank God I don't drink alcohol. I'm going to try and increase my protein, because I don't think that I'm getting enough. This is harder than I thought it would be.

    Less Headaches - you too?

Hi All! I've found some studies that suggest that some weight loss surgery patients are more prone to migraines post-op, however at almost 15 weeks post-op myself I'm finding the opposite and have not had a single headache. I wonder if it's because I've cut sugar, alcohol and caffeine from my diet? Curious if anyone else is experiencing this amazing benefit?

    Less Headaches - you too?

It's more likely it's due to being properly hydrated now. Although cutting sugars, alcohols and caffeine will help out to some extent (depending on the research you are looking at) as well, but I feel the majority of it is due to folks actually paying attention to and consuming the proper amounts of water.

    I Find The Operation Stupid

A friend of mine was in Kuwait for a few years. She liked it. The only thing that bugged her was the lack of alcohol, but that wouldn't have bothered me. My vice of choice is soda. Thanks.
  6. So, my coworker's brother had gastric bypass a few days after I did. Same office, different surgeon. This was 10 months ago almost. He is STILL not eating solid foods. He tried eating a few things, but he got sick, so now he has a food aversion and only eats jello and yogurt. On top of that, he has become an alcoholic. He had blood in his stool and a local doctor thought it was his colon, but then he woke up one night covered in blood. He went to the local hospital (not the one where our surgeon's are), and lost 3 pints of blood due to a bleeding ulcer in his pouch. He drinks a bottle of whiskey a day and also drinks beer. He looks GREY. He has lost nearly 300lbs in the last 10 months alone. He has not told our bariatric clinic about any of this. They don't know about the ulcer, or his drinking, or that he still isn't eating solid food. He is literally going to die. His family hasn't contacted the bariatric clinic either. I don't know this guy - only what my coworker has shared. She says that every day he tells her he regrets what he has done, but is ashamed to contact the bariatric surgeon because they are going to tell him to stop drinking and he doesn't want to. His family has been unable to get him to see anyone about the drinking. Should I make a call to my bariatric office and just be like "hey, I know you can't confirm or deny that this guy is a patient but so and so had surgery on this date with this doctor and this has happened... maybe just make a call to him as a casual "checkup"" in hopes that that will trigger him opening up to get help?
  7. It's SO easy to be cocky newly post op (1-2 years). I remember. You think you have the tiger by the tail. Then the honeymoon period ends. Suddenly, you're hungrier. You can eat more. You've settled into "boring" maintenance. You no longer have the thrill of the scale moving downward. People are used to how you look now, and you aren't getting the validation of constant compliments on how great you look. You're fully healed and feel as normal as you did before surgery, and sometimes you're alarmed by how much more you can eat and how much hungrier you are. Behavior fatigue sets in, and you push the limits of how much sugar or alcohol or carbs you can consume before you see a gain. After all, you pretty much could still lose early out even after the occasional splurge. And if you did gain a pound or two, a couple days of cutting back on carbs and some extra water, it came right back off. Until you discover it doesn't work that way anymore. You gain much easier now for seemingly no reason, and no matter how hard you try, the weight won't come back off like it did before. You become complacent, almost accepting a 5, 10, or even 20 pound gain because it becomes so hard to lose it again. We won't even talk about the guilt and self loathing regain causes. You feel like a failure (even though you really aren't). A fairly new post op has no idea the struggles people 3, 4, 5 years out and more have, so telling people to just suck it up and have more willpower is utter bullshit.

    First Fill Burning

damn, no one else really had any burning huh? Maybe its the way the doc did it?..or maybe I'm just weird like that...but it burned like a mother for about 15-20 seconds and after it was over i still kept feeling twinges like u know when you scratch yourself and the skin burns later...he didn't use alcohol on me he used monkeys blood...what do you call it...benedine? that brown kinda stuff...any way....I don't think i can do another week liquids, i think i have restriction i ate a half bowl of creamy soup today and I'm good. I think i may try some mashed potatoes tomorrow and see how the week goes. I'll keep u posted.
  10. My surgery is in Northern California and Kaiser Fremont. My surgeon isn't requiring a liquid diet pre-surgery. He did make me lose weight before he would approve surgery, and I'm down almost 40 lbs since starting in July. I am going to try to be really good this week and avoid anything that might inflame the liver (no caffeine, alcohol, sweets, etc...) and my goal is to drink 100+ oz water today.
  11. I was sleeved 12 years ago, and never had dumping. I still am sensitive to high fats, lactose or fake sugar (sugar alcohols like xylitol) where I poop my brains out if I eat or drink those things.
  12. I am 3 mos out and had my final nutritionist visit last week. Because I am healed and tolerating the surgery well, she has cleared me (more or less) for juice, soda, alcohol, coffee, etc. - all in MODERATION. I have had small portions of cake, cheesecake, pie, cobbler and candy and have not experienced dumping syndrome. I HAVE had the foamies when eating something either too bulky or taking one or two bites too many. I generally stay between 900-1100 calories per day. I am 62, 50 lbs down and still losing 1-2 lbs per week. EDIT: By "clear", I mean I made her aware that I had consumed this items without any negative consequences and we discussed that I should have no problems if I exercise moderation.

    Just Curious

Can't really vouch for post band, but I'm a long time low carber and my goal was always 20-30 after subtracting fiber/sugar alcohols (aka net carbs). that was being very strict, tho. Most of my carbs would come from vegetables or quest bars

    Alcohol

Just curious if anyone has had alcohol after surgery and how long after surgery was it? I have a party in a few weeks and I want to have one drink. I will be 4 weeks post op.

    Alcohol

Good for you <3<3<3 I have gone out "drinking" with my friends since surgery (I'm 6 weeks out now) and stuck to water, but found that the contact drunk and the atmosphere of the bar meant I still had a great time without the alcohol. I think you'll be surprised
  16. Hey everybody. This is my first time ever going into a forum. I had my surgery in March 2010. Nine years ago in just a few weeks. Originally, I lost 175 pounds. I bounce up and down. But, overall I am doing well with maintaining. I’ve learned how to eat again and I do well with that. My issue is when I consume alcohol. Something is not clicking and telling my body that I’ve had enough. I am a social drinker. Unfortunately, when I do drink, sometimes I tend to just keep going. In nearly 9 years, I still can’t figure out how to get my body accustomed to it. Like I said, food is not an issue. I know when I’m full. I also know that my stomach cannot absorb alcohol like it used to. Has anyone else had this experience and if so how do you manage it? Any help is appreciated. I’m more than happy to answer anyone’s questions as well.
  17. Kris77

    First time posting here

I heard that we don’t or won’t absorb alcohol the same way after surgery. I haven’t had any since my surgery (7mos sho)but I’m not really a big drinker. Maybe check w your NUT on suggestions.
  18. I dont really think I"ve made any terrible mistakes - I'm not a perfect bandster and I do drink alcohol and occasionally eat fattening foods etc but then I think of this as a lifestyle and those things can be part of a healthy lifestyle, in moderation. I guess the worst thing I tend to do is start eating too fast - especially where company and alcohol are involved. That can be uncomfortable but thankfully has only once resulted in a PB for me.

    Itchy Incisions..

I used alcohol pads and that seemed to do the trick. I remember how bad that was. I had my surgery in August and thought it had something to do with heat but with AC on, that still didn't help. I feel for you. Try not to think about it. Sent from my iPad using VST

    Popping Port

Hi Denise! Silly me thought that my port was actually popping out of the incision because there was a little hard ball that I could (and still can) roll around right under my incision. I thought it was the port trying to pop out. Yes, I have port incision issues. I have pictures if anyone is interested but I don't know how to attach them. Before my problems weren't even my port, but they were my port-incision. It's a really ugly scar now, and it's hard like they inserted a chunk of marble under my skin. I guess it's hardened scar tissue that will eventually break down. I think it's normal. I wish I could stop obsessing over it! Now I have real port pain. I started going to the gym too soon, and now I feel exactly where my port is trying to attach to muscle, which is a couple inches below the incision and a bit to the left. EESH, I can hardly walk because it hurts so bad, so I'm doing a couple days of Motrin therapy and rest for a few days, which I think should fix me up. How are you doing with the whole surgery? I think my biggest problem is that I never really drank much alcohol before, and now my band seems to enjoy it. New neighbors moved in, and my new friend is a major party girl. Every night she calls me over for cocktails but I usually only partake on Fridays. I used to drink a few times a year. Now that I'm trying to avoid useless calories, the parties in my neighborhood are going strong! So I'm pushing extra Water, and that's why I was doing extra at the gym, to compensate for booze calories. I haven't actually gotten drunk, but a few glasses of wine go down way, way too easy. I'm hoping to get my first fill in 6 weeks, and at that time I'll start limiting myself to one glass.

    Wannabthinagain's journey

THANK YOU!! i just wish i could sleep and that i would stop having a migraine! thank goodness the nurse called and said my meds for it is OK to take (i was told I wasn't allowed anything more than Tylenol for 2 weeks prior to surgery, including NO ALCOHOL). I should be starting my period any day, which is the cause of the migraine, and i'm happy to get it over with BEFORE surgery, but still....it's been going on 6 days of it and still no sign of TOM! anyone else couldn't sleep this far out? i'm hoping it the migraine and that when it's over, i will sleep better. we just got a new bed and the first night i slept WONDERFUL....the next day is when my head started and it has gotten worse every night! i woke up at least 8 times last night! anyhow....everything is paid for, not backing out now! LOL i had my 2 week pre-op (we did it over the phone so i didn't have to drive 2 1/2 hours just to 'go over' all the paper work i've been having for a few weeks already) I should get my prescriptions in the mail any day now. my next appointment is April 6th, the day before surgery at 3:45. They will schedule all my follow up visits and tell me what time to be at the surgery center. we are staying at a hotel near the office. too bad i can't start the valium the night before! that would help me sleep better! LOL

    Carb Debate (Friendly)

Thanks for this post. I'm a little over a week out from surgery and I had the low carb strategy in mind, but its interesting to see people say they just blend regular food. I know myself and I know what led me to this point. I don't want to fight the same battles that I did pre-sleeve. It's sort of like an alcoholic playing around with one or two drinks here and there. In the beginning, it's fine, until that binge day comes. No thanks! Will I slip up and try things here and there? I'm almost certain of it, but I will always strive to get in all my Protein first before I eat anything else! Also, I want to add that modified low carb that includes 1.5 servings of fruit per day works quite well for me (think Scarsdale's plan).
  23. You're smart to go to another consult. This is a life-changing decision, and you need to feel comfortable going into it! You had valid questions and were being smart enough to think about your life after sleeve, you should get answers that assure you! Dana's right -- I get it that a surgeon cannot be all things to all people, but I think a really good surgeon should know the importance of surrounding himself with a team of qualified, quality people who can help you feel comfortable with your decision. Maybe he does just think of his patients as warm bodies....but if he's not a 'people person' , he should have a coordinator or NP or NUT or director or someone that is able to relate to you as a person. Amazon13 is right -- go with your gut feeling. I personally chose my surgeon because he has a big team and a whole comprehensive program to help ensure my long term success. Him cutting my tummy is just the beginning of a big process that will involve psych/ NUT/ exercise counseling AND support groups. I know your mom was probably joking about the alcoholic remark, but honestly (and I don't mean to be a bummer) I think that without the proper emotional / mental support, there actually is a danger that WLS folks can turn to alcohol to replace their food addiction. I haven't seen too too much about it on VST but have read about it elsewhere. . .I think it's called 'transfer addiction' and it's real for WLS patients, so something to keep in mind. . .

    Kicking OLD Behaviors

Hi Sherry. I've gone through a lot of the same stuff you have. One thing that helped me some was that my band was too tight so I was not bothering with solid foor, and making up for the lack of calories with ice cream. But that was only part of it. I figure I'm like an alcoholic. I'll fall off the wagon, but the first goal is for it to take less time each time to get back on the wagon! And I've really had to manipulate my surroundings. If I eat anything in front of the TV, I go into a trance and just keep eating. And if I sit in front of the TV, I'm not active so that doesn't work either. This food thing is complicated, isn't it? But we'll get there........
