    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Hello everyone. I am three weeks post op and I am doing well. Initially I had some serious set backs ( not due to the surgery itself) that had me in the hospital for two weeks in the ICU. I am lucky to be here as well as grateful. Please please listen to your doctors and follow everything they say. This procedure is a tool only and will not work if you don’t follow the rules. With that being said, I lost 35.6 lbs my first three weeks. That is a great feeling!!!

Can you ever drink soda again after surgery

When I was getting ready for surgery, my surgery center said no carbonation ever again. HOWEVER: right after surgery they announced that based on new research, we could have carbonation starting one month after surgery. I had been a huge diet soda drinker before surgery and was so excited, but I have to say I don't drink much anymore because it has to be a little flat for me to drink it, plus I really liked drinking it with my meals, and I definitely can't drink with my meals anymore. I do have maybe two diet sodas a week. I basically switched to iced coffee, diet juice, and drink packets, because now plain water is hard for me to drink.

I went into this firmly believing I would be getting the sleeve but after my pre op testing and research I ended up getting the bypass. I discovered my frequent heartburn was actually GERD and a hiatal hernia. My surgeon had no problem with me switching to the bypass even though my BMI was exactly 40 (I am 5'-3" and my highest weight was 236). She did make the comment that I was on the low end of patients she would want to do a bypass on. I did not want my GERD/heartburn to worsen. I had bypass on March 3 and have been taking pepcid twice daily. I think this is for only the first 3-6 months. I have had NO heartburn since surgery. I would get a second opinion.

    Under 300lb! WOOHOO

Doesn't it feel good to be a '200 rather than a 300.' I did a happy dance as soon as I saw that. Drinking so much liquids early on seems like a mountain you will never climb but eventually you will get there. Its the same with the protein but you are early on. I had to sleep sat up for 3 weeks but the day finally came when I could lie flat. Pre op I would go to the loo at least 3 times in the night, now its once. A bonus I never thought of. Take care of yourself and just do the best you can.

    Help with nausea?

I've had nausea throughout the 4 weeks to be honest. It does get worse when I try to drink/ eat but even the smell of food is setting me off at the moment. I will speak to my medical team about it too. Hope you are all healed and okay now!

    Under 300lb! WOOHOO

Just do the best you can. My team says you should be hitting goals by 2 weeks. I just kept track and made sure I beat yesterdays goal even my 1g or 1oz every day until all a sudden I was hitting my goals. You definitely have to drink constantly at first to hit it though. Luckily I had bought a new couch (with recliners) and it came in the weekend before I had surgery so I had a new comfy recliner to sleep on for a few days. Took me about a week to be able to lay flat and then I laid on my side with a pillow holding my belly up so it didn't "pull" to make it more comfortable. After a few days of that I was sleeping normal but toss and turned a lot like I couldn't stay in the same position too long. 4 weeks out, I am good with sleep now probably since week 3. It sucks in the beginning, but it really does get better quick. Good luck and keep it up.

    These are handy!

I love tuna. Before surgery i would eat this specific one is what i liked but there are so many different choices. Great for 2 days a week. Not suppose to eat tuna more than that due to mercury.

    Help with nausea?

Hi, Laura. I had really severe nausea and couldn't eat or drink. I was full of buyers remorse, I paid to suffer like this. I was miserable. I had problems over the Christmas period getting through to any doctor, due to Covid. The helpline 111 was swamped and it was a full 6 weeks before I got help. I was very wobbly, dizzy and weak I finally got help via my own doctor and got prescribed Lansoprazole capsules twice a day to begin with. I would have one in bed about 6am. It coats my stomach and really works. The second one I took about 5pm so it had time to work before my evening meal. I only take the morning one now. When I got to about 9 weeks, things really improved for me and I am getting on great now. I have occasional nausea but it passes. I have always loved Heinz chicken soup, so I strained it and tolerated it really well early on. I had Bovril, milk, fruit ice lollies and milky coffee when ever I could tolerate anything. TBH I have only recently reached my liquid and protein goals. I am walking every day and getting better at it. I am 62 so a late starter at this. My husband was really worried about me early on but I think it was so worth it. No matter that I was so ill, I would do this again in a heartbeat. Ask me anything. I am here for you

    Under 300lb! WOOHOO

Weighed myself last night after a shower. 298lb. When i started the preop diet i was at 317. Exciting. I dont weigh myself everyday. I do it like every two weeks or longer. Scales will drive people mad if they weigh themselves everyday. So far recovery has been blah... Sleeping is the hardest because i cant sleep in my own bed, Its painful and i cant get up on my own, Recliner started to hurt my back after 2 days. so been going from chair to chair couch to couch. One good thing is the hunger is pretty much gone for now. I do not feel hungry at all through out the day. I have alarms set to make sure i am getting in the protein and water but thats proven to be difficult to get it all in but i do my best.

in addition, no, PPI's are NOT perfectly safe. There has been a LOT of publicity the last couple of years about the dangers of long-term use of PPIs. They're fine for the short term - maybe a few months - but not for long-term use. My clinic used to put patients on them for a year (like back when I had surgery in 2015). But no more. Most clinics limit them to 3-6 months now.

like the above person said, the average weight loss difference between the two isn't that much, and it IS up to the patient to develop good, lifelong eating habits to prevent gaining the weight back - so I agree with that part. However, there's about a 30% chance of developing reflux with the sleeve (or if you already have it, of it getting worse), whereas the bypass usually improves - if not outright cures - GERD. most of us are put on PPI's (like Prilosec) for the first 3-6 months after surgery, but after that, no. If you continue to have reflux issues after that, then yes - but continuing reflux problems are much more common with sleeve than with bypass. I'd consult with another surgeon. Or if you don't have other options, then insist on bypass. You should be able to get the surgery that you want.

I'd say he is partly right and partly wrong. The right part is that outcomes are not that vastly different between sleeve and bypass. You can have great success with both, and also completely regain weight with both. So, the fact that he's not bought into the higher weight loss with bypass rings true. It's about what you do with the tool. It isn't a magic bullet. The acid reflux thing is just totally wrong, though... If you have GERD or severe reflux the bypass is definitely better. My practice required an endoscopy before doing a sleeve. If I had had it - even silent GERD - she wouldn't have done the surgery. I'd consult with other surgeons if you have options where you live and see what they say. I spoke with 3 different practices when I was considering mine and I learned a lot at all the consults. It really helped me make the right choice (for me) in surgery type and also the surgeon.

Hmmm, that is completely opposite from what I learned from my surgeon and everyone in support groups and forums just by reading and listening to people's stories. I would try to have a consult with another surgeon. I had SEVERE GERD before surgery, so bad I have extensive damage to my esophagus that had to be repaired during surgery. I went into my first apt. with my surgeon with plans of getting sleeve. He explained both surgeries in depth and then explained why the sleeve was not a good choice for me. Mainly was because of the GERD and a high amount of patients end up with some to a ton of acid problems with the sleeve, secondly because I wanted to loose so much weight that the malabsorption would assist in that more so than just the restriction. he asko explained that the hatial hernia repair and the bypass would likely eliminate the GERD if not completely, very likely to get it under control. I was on 2 prescriptions meds and eating tums every day and still, vomiting fireballs half the time. I am 4 weeks post op and I am now only taking a pepcid prescription which everyone takes for a while after surgery to lower the risk of ulcers, but better yet I have had ZERO acid problems. I mean NONE! I know it is still early, but I am starting to get back to a regular diet, even eating some hot sauces from time to time and still no issues. I have high hopes. Honestly, even if I have to take meds I would be completely satisfied as long as they completely controlled it with the meds. This is just my experience and everyones is different. But I truely believe his information is incorrect based on years of research and what I have learned. But I am no professional.
  14. I have been trying to remember whether my surgeon's rules were no carbonation for the first six months or no carbonation ever again. That being said, I've been having two carbonated beverages a week for two years now, so I guess it's okay? I can only drink a couple of ounces at a time because the carbonation bloats me.

    Eating too much

Some plans encourage you to eat more than 1000 calories a day especially at your 11 weeks out. So don’t beat yourself up if you’ve had some days that you have. I bet even when you did you still didn’t eat the volume of food or at the same frequency as you did before surgery. I was only advised portion sizes never calories. I started at 1/4 cup & worked up to almost a cup by goal. One of the most helpful strategies I still employ is to ask myself if I need the next bite or do I just want it. Coupled with trying to stop eating before I feel full. Eat slowly and never be afraid to put your cutlery down, push your plate away from you &/or sit back from the table. Real hunger feels different to head hunger. Head hunger will go if I distract myself or delay eating for 30minutes or so or if I focus on drinking (warm is best). Real hunger persists. With head hunger I want a specific food or flavour (sweet, salty, etc.) but it often doesn’t satisfy the desire. With real hunger I just want food & nutritionally dense food satisfies it. I feel restless with real hunger like something is wrong. Head hunger usually affects my emotions - hangry or frustrated. Are you bored, stressed, frustrated or another emotion & is this what is driving you to eat? Are you eating out of habit or a time on the clock? A rumbling tummy often doesn’t mean you are hungry but it’s just your body digesting food. I rumble & grumble all day long but I’m not hungry. Stomach acid can make you think you’re hungry. PPIs can help with that. Nutritionally dense food like proteins are usually more filling than empty calorie, high sugar, high fat or highly processed foods. Have a chat with your dietician.
  16. I feel you on the mourning the food addiction all I want is to eat until I’m full it’s crazy how fast you have to come to terms with your addiction. Many times I wish I had never done this but I also recognize that that’s the addiction talking and that I will find more fulfillment in choosing to be healthy. Just have to keep the mindset I know I shouldn’t be weighing myself but I think after all the dieting that never stuck all the working out and the weight I would shed and quickly gain back the fact I’m watching the scale consistently show me I’m dropping weight it’s helping me realize that I made the right choice. I’m dreading the stalling period already but I’m getting better and not checking everyday but I have a smart scale called Fit Track Pro and every time I weigh myself it keeps track of it and I can watch it decrease and it also measure BMI muscle mass water intake and visceral fat of course not as accurate as the doctors office but it’s a very nice tool that I have I’m glad your feeling better if you ever wanna chat lemme know I’m always down for conversation ❤️

    June 2022 surgery buddies

I’m scheduled for my vertical sleeve on June 7th at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans 🥳 Because my BMI is 35, I only have to do 1 week liquid diet prior to my surgery date. Then 2 weeks liquid diet, followed by week 2-4 puréed diet, 1-2 month post op is soft foods, then 3 months post op is solid foods.

    Help with nausea?

did this just start recently? And is it mostly after you eat or drink something? If those things are true, it could also be a stricture. You're in the right time frame for it. Let your clinic know. If they suspect it might be that, they'll have you come in for an upper endoscopy. It's an easy fix if that's what it is. I had two of them (at four weeks out and again at about eight weeks out) they almost always appear 1-3 months after surgery. They're very rare after the three month mark. About 5% of bypass patients get those.

    how long before a #2

about a week. And just a warning, that first one can be a doozy, so I'm glad you're taking stool softeners!
  22. You should take the basics, toothpaste toothbrush, hair brush, a book if u like and a charger. I Took my favorite neck pillow. Expect to nap between lab draws, nurses checking on you, and walking. It is hard to get a solid 6-8 but it won’t matter a week from then. Hope your surgery and recovery go very smoothly! I had surgery RNY on 4-5. I am back to All normal activities, bored, not working yet!! So happy with everything so far. I am still in 2 tbs purée 3x/day but I’m fine with that.Never Looking back!

    April 2022 Surgery Buddies

Thank you!! You all have answered so many of my questions already. Was wondering: what people bring to the hospital? Were u able to sleep post-op that first night while in hospital or should I have my husband stay with me? Have 3 teenage kids who could stay alone if needed. Thanks!!
  24. Yes as long as the podiatrist is ok putting you under so soon. After 2 weeks you should feel pretty normal, just lighter and more hopeful about the future! T
