  1. After I realized that the pain meds were making me vomit, I stopped taking them. About 24 hrs after surgery I stopped all pain meds because I vomited probably about 10 times while taking the morphine. Every time I pushed the morphine button I'd vomit about 5 mins later. I also puked during the leak test. It hurt so bad to vomit and it was brown dried up blood in the vomit. Once I stopped, I didn't vomit after that. Of course the pain was at a level 5-6 when I stopped pain meds but I've given birth without pain meds twice and I knew it would get better once my natural endorphins started working. I refused meds at home also. Morphine made me itch also. I hate pills and rarely medicate because when I do (take meds) they always cause some type of side effect and then you need another pill to help with the side effects of the next pill.

    Five Days Post-op 11/3/08

11/3/08 I am hungry, but the thought of eating anything about makes me want to puke. I finally broke down and bought some liquid protien. 42g in 3 ounces. I had to. I couldn't get enough in. I can't even drink enough. I'm trying. I got over 60 gms of protein in with that. I bought six to last me about the next week. I am supposed to be able to start transitioning to soft food the day after tomorrow but I have decided to try some egg beaters tomorrow. A day early, but I want to try. I just can’t get enough calories or protein down. I caught my family physician up on the fact that I had surgery. He kind of figured it out since his wife was one of the two I mentioned I had surgery to. I was planning to let him know when I had a chance at work anyway. He and my husband are the only two around that knows what kind of surgery I had. He was surprised I had it so fast. I only mentioned it to him in September. Self pay moves a lot faster. Besides when I make up my mind I am not one to fiddle-fart around. (Wow did I really just use that phrase?) This is my first day without Lortab. I about started crying tonight; the left shoulder pain was so bad, but I laid down on my back on the floor for about 10 minutes and it really toned down the pain. I don’t know why that helps and I don’t really care. By the way…I still don’t regret my decision not to tell anyone. You see I can always change my mind and let people in on my decision, but once the cat is out of the bag……… Keeping this a secret is for me. It is personal. I'm not saying it is for everyone. I think I have to come to terms with the fact that I couldn’t handle this monster called obesity by myself. I need to be okay with the fact that I needed surgery. Not wanted surgery, but NEEDED it. I needed it for me. I needed it for my personal life. I needed it for my self-confidence. I needed it for many different reasons. When I decide to let others in on it then I will. Maybe never….maybe soon. I think that will depend on my journey.

Thank you, I agree with luckyinlove. I am having surgery 4-28-10 and vacillate daily on whether I have made the right decision. You have confirmed that I have!

10.5 cc's and only 6 months Post Op! UGH!!!!!!!

WoW. That's alot of cc's but I am like you, I have 7 cc's in a 10 cc band. Don't get too discouraged cause I know there is a limit when eating, so with that said, yes I do feel more hungry at times. It's self control that plays a key here, the band works, but slowly. Yes for some its more but for the ones like me it's moderate to slow, be patient and follow the diet plan. You will see results. Good luck on your journey.
  6. I don't know yet. I am self pay and I will learn more when I see the NP in about 10 days. If they truly charge that much for self pay, probably not. I'm glad to hear you're doing well!
  7. My doctor will do another fill gratis within ten days. I've read that sometimes you do not feel the restriction for 2-4 weeks....if I don't feel the restriction within the 10 days, do you think I should go back for more??

BJean -- I haven't eaten any Chik Fil A chicken and won't. I don't do well with fried chicken these days, but I love good baked chicken. I get those little rotisserie chickens at the local grocery store, nuke them for 5-10 minutes to kill the germs and they go down pretty well. But I think I'm going to try beating the hell out of some chicken breasts, put some Stove Top in them and give that a try. Of course, I have to jazz up the Stove Top a lot, but it's pretty good when I get through adding stuff. I ate some rice today at a wedding reception. It went down very well. It is on our proscribed list, but I'd sure like to make some Shrimp Creole. I have Brennan's recipe and that the best Shrimp Creole in the world. Good hearing from you. I love to hear from Okies who aren't nuts.

    GRUUUMPY...

Maybe it's how you structure your food intake throughout the day. I had to experiment and play around with mine until I found what works for me to keep me from being hungry. I was at first, but now, am rarely hungry unless it's close to meal time. I start off the morning with a high-protein shake on my way to work. At work, I eat 1/2 a protein bar. (This came throught experimentation too - because along with protein comes calories!) Around 10:30 a.m. I start drinking a can (11.5 oz) of V8 vegetable juice. This is a great way to get your veggies in and curbs hunger til lunch. Then at 3 I have a snack, usually something with protein, like yogurt or the other 1/2 of the bar I had for breakfast. Then supper is around 6. For my beverages throughout the day, I drink Crystal Light - they have a strawberry-banana flavor that suppresses hunger. The also have other flavors that boost energy, increase metabolism, etc. The key is to make one change at a time so you can tell if that one change makes a difference - and give it time too - it usually doesn't make a difference right away, but after 2-3 days, you'll notice. Hope these tips help, everybody's different!
  11. they will not turn you away-my dr wanted me to lose 10% of my body weight- I lost about 7%-nothing was said to me on surgery day about the 8 lbs I did not lose-they just want your mind in the game and for you to be prepared for this journey-also helps them in surgery due to the shrinkage in liver size due to weight loss- you are doing great!
  12. I am kvetching! Just had my telephone pre-op and when asked about my pre-op weight loss, I proudly announced that I've lost 16lbs since August 1st. I met with the doctor on 8/9. He apparently wrote down "must lose 20 to 40lbs" on my chart. 20-40lbs BEFORE surgery. Saw him on 8/9. Surgery is 9/19. I've lost 16lbs and was feeling pretty darn good about that, but now I'm like they just debited my account 16,000 dollars and I might be turned away for not losing enough weight beforehand? I've worked like a trooper to lose 16lb in a month's time. I have 10 days until surgery. I might lose another 2-3 lbs, realistically--but another 20? This is Bandster Hell, huh? Darr
  13. I can relate. I've done many closet/drawer clean-outs throughout my weight loss journey. I began in 22/24 and got rid of things as I started to go down in size. I told myself I'd hang onto anything size 12 and smaller, but just this weekend I decided that I needed to clean out my 12's too. I have a pregnant friend who is an 8/10 normally and I told her I'd bring my 12's next week so she could have them instead of buying maternity clothes. I NEVER thought I'd be at a place where I'd get rid of this size because it's too big:-) Good luck with your yard sale!!!

    So Tired

I am on day 8 since surgery. I have been doing well with water and vitamins, get about 50g protein. Prior to the surgery I could walk/jog a 10 min mile. Now I find myself out of breath if I walk my daughter to school which is around the block. I get really feverish and tired. My energy level is really low and all I want to do is sleep. Is this normal? I am thinking so, but when does energy pick up and is there anything I can do to boost it?
  15. There is no specific timeframe for a stall. It really depends on your body and what you are feeding it. There is an adjustment period in which the body does everything possible to hold on to the energy that is has stored. It will burn glucose first before burning fat. One of the quickest ways to break a stall is to actually eat more kcals, say 10-15% more than you are consuming now. That gets the body back to burning energy instead of storing it. It can be frustrating and some people can stay stall for significant periods of time, but if you eat more protein and calories and get all the water in plus more, then you should see things moving.
  16. Depends on your insurance and how thorough and fast your surgeons office is, I asked my surgeon's office how long it normally takes it to hear back from my insurance and they said 5 to 10 business days. Mine was just approved yesterday (7/15) and got the call from the hospital to schedule my surgery yesterday as well, it took 10 business days.

    1-2 week post op

Don't rush yourself. I know you want to eat solids, but it sounds like your stomach doesn't want you to. 10 days is very early on. If they are giving you trouble, switch back to purees or full liquids for a week or so before trying again. It isn't a race.

  19. I'd call your doctor tomorrow. I'm surprised you weren't given pain meds, and Aleve is an NSAID which I hear is a no no. Every dr is different, so I don't want to be too harsh with my judgement. I was taking my liquid Lortab three times a day for the first 5 days. Maybe I'm a wus With no spirometer, practice taking a deep breath for like 10 sections to slowly open up your lungs.

Vent... having a difficult time getting bariatric doc office to submit to insurance. I did a 6 month nutritional program through my former insurance, gave release to doc office (still haven't requested it). I also did 10 months of Weight watchers from august 2016 - may 2017 and even had doctor visits in august, October, April, (and several others) where my weight was recorded and even nutrition discussed - though the visits were not specifically for that. I have talked to my current insurance several times and they are very much encouraging me to have my doc office submit for approval. Especially now since my medical tests revealed a hiatal hernia and gerd (i knew I had gerd) and that sometimes a waiver is given. However, the person at my doc office is being a bit snippy about turning it in for approval because she thinks the people I talked to at my insurance are wrong. I am trying to get them to submit but agh. (they also still have to request my ekg results since hospital was not theirs and get the online bariatric psych eval place to actually send my approval results). A bit frustrated. Just in case I started the 6 month nutrition visits through my doc back on the 6th

    60+ years in age

I'd like to join the group, if I may. I am going to be 62 this month. On Jan 26 2016 I had the sleeve surgery along with my gallbladder removed and a hernia repair. A bit about me and my pictures: I was obese all my life except for 2 years in the early 1970's when I was in my twenties and weighed 170 and was wearing a size 16. Twenty years later at 320 I became injuried by a complete stranger and less than 4 years later I was wheelchair bound due to the injuries and the doctors not wanting to treat an obese woman. Early 2000's when I had reached 497 I asked my husband to help me reduce my weight as my health was horrible. I was still in a wheelchair and in so much pain. I had 4 herniated discs, spinal stenosis, radicular neuropathy, half of a right hip bone, frozen left shoulder, Carpal tunnel syndrome and ulnar nerve damage. He said no way would he help me as he was a Fat Admirer and loved me obese. We had a major fight about this and I started a weight loss program. Despite him doing everything in his power to tempt me with my favorite foods I managed to lose 90 pounds the first year. The next year I filed for divorce after I found out he cheated on me with women more obese than I was. That year I lost another 90 ponds on my own with a second weight loss program. For the next 10 years I bounced back and forth from 302 to 390 until June 2015 when I went to a surgeon about the hernia and gallbladder problems. Turns out he was also a WLS specialist and had taught other Doctors how to do the sleeve surgery. I saw him when I weighed 352 pounds. In Jan 2016 I went in for the 3 surgeries weighing 315 pounds. Today I weigh 220 pounds for a total loss of 277 from my highest weight. In June of 2017 I had a Breast Reduction and sometime within the next 3 months I will have excess skin removed from my arms. I have to get to my goal of 180 this year so my huge dropped tummy excess skin can also be removed. I need to get back to following all the rules and eating like I did when I first had the surgery. With many of you being in the beginning stages I am sure that will help me and I feel I might be able to offer a lot of help to you all.

    Inability to throw up?

Considering how much I ended up throwing up toward the end of having my lap band, this sounds great! I don't want to throw up, I HATE throwing up. If I were to mess up, lesson learned for next time. Let that pain that you're going through for 10+ minutes be a reminder for next time.

    Acne prone skin..

For acne there's are to really only two things that I would reccommend based on the research. Either benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Everything else is window dressing. Salicylic acid works better for me benzoyl peroxide (eg proactive) works better for others. Sal acid cleans out the pore and will exfoliate your dry flaky skin, Benz deals with any infection you've got. I'd find creams with at least 2% sal. Acid or 10% Benz and very little else's and try those. Google Paula Begoun. She rates products for their ability to perform based on ingredients, not brand names. Her acne section is also very, very educational. Good luck!

I have been a runner for many years thru being thin to being overweight/obese and still ran. It took me about 6 mmonths to run a mile without stopping. I would walk 5 miles/day once my body got use to the walking I had to challenge it more so I started jogging. I could only jog a 10-20 steps at a time, then I increased a bit more each time and really pushed myself. I constantly set goals and reached them. I LOVE running and my next goal is to run a 10 minute mile once I reach that my next goal is to run a 9 minute mile. My advise is start out slow and steady, you don't want to push too hard then you will end up with a injury, take baby steps and good luck
