    Booo!

I too have lost and gained (like many of us - I'm sure). I also was afraid it wouldn't "work" for me! But I'm happy to report that it is working great! Don't be discourage if it takes a while to get started. I lost 17 lbs before surgery (11/09) and then managed to gain 7 of it back before my first fill (about 8 weeks after surgery). I've had 3 fills total and I'm around 7 cc of a 10 cc band and I'm now down 55 lbs. I also beleive I've hit that sweet spot that everyone talks about. I can pretty much eat whatever I want, just in very, very small amounts. I work very hard to get my daily Protein in first! My doctor told me from the very beginning that his goal was for me to be able to eat whatever I thought tasted good and lose weight and then eat whatever tasted good to maintain my weight. And so far it's working. So hang in there and get excited! It works!

    Erosion, Dialation or spasims?

Usually erosion doesn't have many symptoms, most don't realize they have it. The biggest one is they tend to gain weight. Esophageal spasms feel like a heart attack many times. You can be walking across the room and suddenly find yourself doubled over in pain. It's like a charlie horse in your esophagus. Slips... often times you can't even keep Water down, you barf everything. Think of an hourglass, the top half being very small and the bottom very large. With a slip usually the back half of the stomach slides up through the band and the top half gets bigger and flops over to one side cutting off the pass through for food and liquids. You might feel a loss of restriction, very big and noticeable or an inability to keep anything down. I'd go to your doc and see what is going on with you.

    229.9

I've been HOVERING at 230-233 for quite a while (week and a half). Dying to hit the 220's. I take my weight loss in "decades" - in the 50's, 40's, 30's- because there are so many day to day fluctuations. Well, today I hit 229.9! I was GOING to take a picture of the scale... Until I realized holding the phone to snap it would have added a couple of ounces!!!!

    Exercise for the New Sleevers

Started back at gym at week 3. First two to three weeks were rough, lose a lot of muscle quick with rapid weight loss. I sweated a lot and stamina was low. Talked the PA and dietician, increased calories for additional calories burned, it helped get stamina back and sweating stopped. Around week 8, 5 weeks after returning to gym, my strength was back to pre surgery. Workout still basically, 1/2 hour treadmill running followed by 1 hour of resistance training, cardio workout, ab workout, mixture of all of the previous all depending upon what my personal trainer plans for me.

    Curious....

I lost 20 pounds the first month after my surgery. BUT...as anyone here on the BP forum will tell you, everyone is different. There's no magic number, no 'typical' weight loss the first month.
  7. I turned 50 last September. It was like someone flipped a switch! I have aches and pains in places I didn't know I had! Foot, hip, back-- you name it. I work at a desk and if I sit for any length of time I hobble for awhile when I get up and start moving around. I exercise regularly (Nodric-Trak X-country ski machine) and I do some stretching exercises for my achilles. Before the band I would just load up on ibuprofen or Celebrex or Aleve or some other NSAID but I am very careful about taking anything now. Anyone else deal with these issues? How? It's getting depressing because I seem to come up with something new about every month! I'm hoping weight loss will help....

Anyone Else With Dr. Kelly May 25Th?

Thanks DDFinn, congrats on the weight loss! I'm hoping mine comes off quickly too . sam74, I see you're from NC too! Maybe we will run into each other between the hospital and the Lucerna. Good luck! sherlee, I hope so. Yep, I started it last Tuesday. I am staying hungry all the time but I've lost 7 lbs. V-8 juice is my new BFF this week and I made a puree (gerber stage 1 consistency) that was pretty dang good- dice 1 sm vidalia onion, stir in hot pan to get sweatin', add 2 chopped squash, black pepper, Water, & a little Swanson chicken broth packet. Cook til tender and puree the heck out of it-enough for 2-3 meals. What have you tried out so far?

  11. I am experiencing this now, and it’s hard! I’m getting sleeved in January and am toward the bottom of the allowable BMI range for surgery, so when the nurse told me not to lose anymore weight I think I went too far in the other direction. I have lost 76lbs on weight watchers and kept it off for over a year, but I haven’t been able to lose more since last Nov. so now I’m finding myself eating all this shit I taught myself to stop eating on weight watchers. Trying to get back into a healthy mindset before surgery but I hear you, it’s hard!
  12. Did reflux cause weight regain, or was that the reason you were approved for the revision?

    I miss Gibson...

Welcome back Gibson!!!:cursing: A lot of us gain or stay stagnant after the liquid phase, but it is only temporary.Good luck on your first fill. It will give you all the fullness and motivation you need to persevere.Remember it still is a loss and not a quadruple gain. Set backs occur and than a fill occurs. It is the beauty of the band as a weight loss tool where all other diets failed all of us. Can't wait to hear how you are doing after the fill.
  14. I went for my first consultation yesterday, and was very excited to get started on this whole journey. By the time I got home, the sleep study receptionist had left a message to make an appointment for tonight. Psychiatrist is on Monday, Gastroscopy is on Wednesday, Cardiologist is on 3/3 and all I have left to do is find a bariatric nutritionist that United Healthcare will cover. I am so excited to get these things under way, so the paperwork can all be submitted to UHC. If they don't approve me I will probably hit this deep funk...so I'm trying to keep myself anticipating anything from them. The surgeons office has already got the criteria from them, so I hope this is all going to be good. Looking forward to being set free from this bondage of weight. Anyone had experience with UHC in Arizona? How long did it take you to hear anything, did they make you jump through hoops.... My surgeon will be Dr. Chiasson (hopefully......)
  15. My insurance required six months of pre-surgery weight loss efforts, and psychological screening (my surgeon requires the psych visit too). My surgeon also required: metabolic rate testing, H. Pylori, upper GI series, and EKG. I didn't have to do a sleep study because I have no symptoms of sleep apnea. I also had multiple blood draws to check things like pre-surgery vitamin and mineral levels and to see if I had any problem with blood sugar levels (I don't). I think that's it. Good luck!
  16. Hi. My name is Jeremiah. I have always struggled with my weight just like everyone here. When I started my sleeve journey, I weighed in at 491. With the south beach diet that my surgeon insisted I go on, I was able to lose 73 pounds prior to surgery. I had surgery on 3/12/14 and weighed 418 lbs. At my one will follow up appointment I had lost 16 pounds in the right days after surgery. Got on the scale today and lost another seven pounds. Brings my total weight to 96 lbs so far since the end of November. I also got below 400 lbs for the first time in 10-11 years. But what I enjoy most are the little things I'm noticing like being able to pull my socks ask the way up and not bunching them around my ankles. Being able to wear a tie and wear it properly. Feeling the way my clothes are fitting. I am so looking forward to this summer when me and my kids can go on a bike ride. I have never been able to do that. Please consider the little things and celebrate them. Remember them when your day is not going as planned. I look forward to getting to know and support some of you as we go through this journey together.

gained weight since my initial consult

Hello-- I, too, gained weight during my six-month supervised diet (12 pounds), but learned today that I was approved by my insurance company (Blue Care Network, Michigan). I think that it's true that they're looking for participation and documentation from the program. I would check, however, to make sure that they are not requiring you to lose or maintain. I've read some posts from people who said their insurers do have those specifications. I also sent in a letter from my Jenny Craig counselor, copies of Weight Watchers weigh in booklets, and a letter from a hypnotherapist I worked with on weight issues. Best of luck to you, Beautylocs

gained weight since my initial consult

I gained about 10 pounds after my initial consult, too.I was very embarrassed about it. Especially when the doctor mentioned it to me. I tried to laugh it off by saying that I had spent a week at Disney and all the good food must have gotten me, but I still felt ashamed. I have BCBS and they did not require a 6 month diet, just documented weights and a listing of the different weight loss programs you tried. I had it lucky, I did not have the insurance and approval problems that others have encountered. I am very thankful for that!
  19. I haven't been this weight in over 5 years. However, I still cannot wear the jeans that I was wearing 10 lbs heavier than this. What gives? I wasn't more muscley then. I have lost almost 50 pounds and only one clothing size. AAARGH! I feel like there isn't much of a difference in the way I look. I know, how I feel is most important, but that hasn't been different either, as I never really felt bad Healthwise before the band. Is it skin? What? I am so sick of being a plus size! I'm still a 20!

    Complete Unfill!!

So, I am 7 months out and have lost 60 pounds.... I am totally thrilled about that. But, then a few days ago, I had a tough day. Seemed everything was getting stuck. That night I had horrible reflux, which continued the next day. My chest hurt, my throat hurt, and I couldn't eat anything. Yesterday, my chest and throat were a bit better, but I still couldn't eat anything (even a shake was too much) without feeling it in my chest. So, I went to the dr today and felt I needed a complete unfill and he put me on previcid (I think - haven't picked up the scrip yet). He wants me to stay unfilled for TWO MONTHS!! On the one hand, I almost immediatly felt better and after I ate some good protien, I felt so much better. On the other hand, I am scared to be unfilled for two months. What if I go back to my old ways. I know it took 7 months to lose that 60lbs, feeling terrified I could gain it back in 2!!

    tricare appeal wait

Just curious, why did you get denied? Is it because of your weight? I am just curious cause I am 5'4" and weigh 249 and have 1 comorbity. I am hoping I weigh enough. I guess I will find out next week...... Jennifer
  22. I go up and down with my capacity as my time of the month nears, too. I swear that darn sleeve relaxes when I have PMS!! Look - half a sandwich and a hard boiled egg is NOTHING compared to what you would have eaten a year ago. I'm going to say something you might not like but I really want to help you. I think you're scared that you don't have the self control to eat "normally" and that you want the sleeve to do it all for you. On one hand, you're in luck. That sleeve might expand enough to fit a whole sandwich (sans crust, of course) but it's not going to fit a whole pizza or a value meal from McDonald's again. It's unlikely you're going to expand much at all from this point onward. Part of this process is learning to eat normally. We need to view food as vital, as nourishing and as energy instead of as a source of comfort or something to feel guilty about. Around 18 months out I noticed an increased capacity (FINALLY!) and did the same thing - I freaked a little bit. But what was I freaked about? I was finally able to eat TWO eggs scrambled with cheese instead of only one. Big whoop! You are not losing control. You are in control. There will come a point when you need to eat more in order to maintain your energy and your goal weight. Slowly learning how to do it without scaring yourself, losing control or seeing a gain on the scale is an important part of the process. This is what nobody talks about when they talk about surgery! Dealing with the mental aspect of the surgery is the most important thing you can do for yourself. Your stomach didn't make you overweight - something in your head did. Figure it out. Limiting yourself too severely because you're afraid eating will cause a gain is an eating disorder just as surely as overeating in the past was a disorder. If you aren't already, track your calories. Sometimes I get a lot of comfort from seeing numbers in the same ballpark each day and knowing that I'm eating the right amount of food even when I feel like I'm overdoing things. Good luck, ~Cheri

Here is my Grandson (14yr old)

The weight loss is stalled right now. I haven't and WON'T weigh myself till this coming Monday. I feel like I have lost but don't wanna jinx it in case I am way wrong. LOL!!! I am just looking forward to some time to just chill. My grandson played in my art studio today and he produced two really cool paintings. If I can get a pic of them before he leaves I will do that and post them. Paula, I am pretty proud of both of these guys. They actually wanted me to ride stuff with them and when I tried to bow out and let them just do it alone they both pulled my arms and said "OH NO YOU ARE COMING TOO!" Isn't that sweet?

    Signs youre full?

Thanks Cheri! Wow, 7 years out and out and you still can't handle more than a few bites of beef. Amazing. I haven't thrown up but have experienced that very uncomfortable 😣 feeling that I ate to much but it usually goes away after 20-30 minutes if I walk around a bit or take a tums. That was the first time I tried steak and I was surprised that I ate as much as I did. I guess it's just trying to figure out the signals and if it's hunger, reflux or digesting. And I wonder if I'm eating enough since I'm losing weight so slowly. Eating average of 650-700 calories, 65 -70 G protein. But usually only get 45 oz of water at best. Found that nutritionist has not been a lot of help - very vague with guidelines.
  25. Yes I am proud and enjoy being able to lose this weight. Its the best thing that I have ever done. Good luck with yours.
