That's a question I have asked myself often. The obvious answer is that it's no wonder we didn't move more when we were enormous! It's no wonder I was walking 900 steps a day (all indoors) instead of the 10,000 a day I now walk. It's no wonder I was eating a normal person's daily calories (under 2,000) and still gaining weight. It's no wonder I was effing miserable! This surgery has been a miraculous, amazing thing for me. I am so full of gratitude. It's like I walked out of a terrible life into a wonderful, wonderful life. Bottom line: I think people who have weight loss surgery are some of the smartest, bravest, coolest people around. The alternative was to live miserably and die too young.

Yesterday marked my seventh month from VSG. It has been an interesting journey and one that is not close to being over. I am not sure what my current weight is because I am going to weigh myself tomorrow. As of last week I was 201 and my highest weight was 303 or 305. It is hard to describe the changes I have gone through. It almost seems unreal. Like, hey where did that collar bone come from. Or sitting with my legs crossed for a longer period of time. Being able to wear a size 14 swim suit. I am still very thankful for my sleeve and I look forward to hitting my goal weight. I think what I like the most is that I can feel my body getting stronger. How many of you are seven months out? What has surprised you so far?

Am I learning to set limits? Will the lesson stay with me?
VSGAnn2014 replied to IcanMakeit's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Everything in due time. When you're still losing weight, it's not time for a lot of indulgence. Or at least it wasn't for me. For the formerly obese, learning to "indulge safely" without falling off a cliff is a big, big lesson. However, we manage that trick (and it will vary person to person) is a good thing. But I'm with the OP. I'm very much up for learning how to indulge safely and enjoy the pleasures that some foods can bring, but without focusing on that pleasure more than the nutritional aspects of food. What an interesting trip this is. The longer I'm in maintenance, the more respect I have for all the vets who've made this work for them -- in many different ways. -
I'm on my second day liquid diet. Day 1 was rough, but I got through it. Surgery day is March 6. Has anyone did the complete two weeks of liquid, and if so, how much weight did you lose.

Seven Month Update (Pics Included)
Felicity2u replied to Felicity2u's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
No tricks really, just follow my doctor's plan. I try to get in about 800-900 calories a day, 70+ ounces of water, 80+ protein and no more than 45 carbs a day and I never have more than 15 carbs per meal and I don't bank cards. So, if at breakfast I have 6 carbs, then I can't bank the other 9 for lunch but I can have a snack that have 9 or less carbs in between. This is something the my nutritionist taught me and has worked well! I exercise no less than three times a week if not more and I usually take off from it on the weekends. I do arm and leg machines and do 30 minutes on the elliptical and 15 minutes on the bike. Sometimes I will do 30 on both. Like I said before, really no tricks, just follow your doctor's plan and the weight will come off. There have been weeks that I have lost nothing and then some weeks where I have lost alot. You will have stalls, they are a part of the process but don't give up. Your sleeve is a great tool and you have to trust in it! Good luck on your journey! -
At my last surgeon's appointment two months out from surgery, I asked how much weight they might expect me to lose when I return for my six month post-op appointment at the end of November. The nurse practitioner said she thought I could lose 60 more pounds (over the next four months). At the time that seemed like a lot, and now that I'm well into the timeline and losing an average of 10 pounds/month, it definitely seems unrealistic. I am pretty happy with my weight loss so far; I was 250 the day of surgery, and 4.5 months out, I'm at 185. Realizing that everyone is different, I am curious if 10 pounds/month seems like a reasonable amount to be losing at this point? Thanks so much for your input.

Highs And Lows Of Weight Loss
Cocoabean replied to highland's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, CONGRATS on regular sizes!! Yay! I fondly remember that day. Reality bites sometimes, doesn't it? I don't wear anything shorter than capris. But my weight was spread all over, so my thighs and upper arms deflated like balloons. I don't wear tank tops either. The running joke in my house is that if my DH makes me mad I will use my bat wings like a whip and he won't know what hit him from across the room! -

I look forward to feeling like that! LOL! Congratulations on achieving your goal! pre-surgery weight 325; surgery date 2/28/2013; surgery weight 307; 8 weeks past-op weight 281.4; 12 weeks post-op 274; 4 month post-op 266.2; 5 month post-op 262.6 -
Thanks for the replies!! Serene - your postive attitude is awesome! My husband and I want another baby as well. We have two great little boys but do want at least another. I do not want to get pregnant at the weight I am at. I am a labor and delivery nurse and I can see the problems that go along with obesity and pregnancy. The surgery still makes me nervous but I am praying about it. I am meeting with the doctor tomorrow to get things scheduled and for him to answer more questions I have. Girliegirl - I still have my band and have had it since Sept 2011. I TOTALLY understand what you are saying about long term problems. A few people I know are very much against me doing this surgery. They have mentioned where are the studies for long term? All those thoughts do cross my mind but I also think about if I continue at the weight I am at ( 250) then all the health issues that can come with that.. heart disease, diabetes..etc. Amy

Don't freak out, this I only temporary. Before you know it your stomach will be able to tolerate all and any foods. For these few fragile months when you can only eat bites if food at a time, embrace them. It is when you have the most restriction, and tend to loose the most weight. Take advantage.

Hello all. I have had an obesity problem all my life - as does everyone in my family. Four members of my family have the band including myself. I also know several people with the band. I am the worst example out of them all. I was banded almost 3 years ago and have only lost 27lbs (267 to 240). I have struggled to work off every bit of that. I have been 240lbs for months now. I have a bowflex, free weights and an elliptical. I exercise 2-4 times a week. I feel as if I am cursed. I have had 3 fills. I went in for another fill today, but I could not get the white Fluid down (stuff you drink for x-ray). The Doctor had to take it out and said I had to make do with what I had in me already. I have joined this site today to seek advice on losing weight. I would really like to get down to 199, but I would be very happy at 210.

Welcome! Don't worry about not losing weight during the healing phase. Do be mindful of your liquid calories and don't over do that's all. The healing phase is just that,; you want to keep your stomach at rest so everything can heal in place. I'm glad to hear you have your first fill scheduled already. That's when you may notice a bit of a change. (don't panic if you don't feel restriction at that first fill though, they will not want to overfill you so will be more likely to under fill you...) The best of luck to you on your journey!

Tell your doctor what's going on and see about getting an aggressive fill. Not responding to the first fill is totally normal. The difference that I see is that you are just "giving up". Believe me, when the restriction kicks in it will be MUCH easier to stick to it. But you have to retrain your eating habits. I have yo-yo dieted my whole life (45+ years) and considered it completely impossible for me to lose weight and keep it off. I have been SHOCKED at how well I have done with the band. I have worked at it, let there be no doubt about that...but I am also human and I have slacked off on my exercising though my diet has been carefully watched. I am still losing. When I approach food I actually THINK before I eat or order now. I never did that before. The band isn't a license to retain your old habits and if you do, you will find a way to "work around" your band...but with determination (and I don't mean like you've had to do in the past) you can change it!

1st Psych Eval Tomorrow 12/13/16
Eaumond replied to Krystyneh's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine was no more than 30 minutes, asking various questions about why you want the surgery, how you may have gotten to the weight you are, the questions are not to judge or fix you, they are there to see if you are ready to get this and succeed, they want you to have a support system too. Hope it goes well! Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App -

If you eat fast will your pouch stretch?
OKCPirate replied to Savannah Lee's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Short answer is no, at least not permanently. Stomached are made of flexible tissues. Longer answer herehttp://obesitycoverage.com/weight-loss-surgeries/gastric-sleeve/gastric-sleeve-will-my-stomach-stretch -
@@tapslp It's been quite awhile since I've had prednisone but maybe if you have healthy alternatives to eat when the starving feeling comes - you'll not gain or gain less weight. Eat some cucumbers & hummus instead of chips, have a SF popsicle instead of ice cream. I wish you luck! Autoimmune disease sucks!

1st visit didn't help
kellyjoiii replied to erieli's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First off, let me say that you DID do a good thing! As for your appt, I am sorry it went so badly. Let me ask you this, have you been taking the pills whole already? If so, than I say continue on. If you haven't, are they something that you ABSOLUTELY NEED? Forgo them all together. I don't know of anyone who stops their meds for a week and then goes back on them (at least I dont know any..not saying there arent any). As for clear liquids.....did your doctor tell you when he did the surgery or before.....what the time frame is with liquids and purees and such? EVERY DOCTOR IS DIFFERENT..but I will say, I was on liquids (NOT CLEAR) from the day after my surgery, soups and such, and I was told a week out, I could start soft and pureed foods (not in that order lol). BUT as for the sweets, everything in VERY LITTLE moderation I say, it is also why I chose the band. Not that I want to eat all that, as I realize that most of THAT was what contributed to my weight problem in the first place. I have had sweets...small amounts and it has not affected much of my weightloss. I would say (and this is just me) I would start having liquids other than clear....soups (without meat chunks, or puree them) and protein shakes, applesauce, jello, puddings...just make sure you are liquifying those things before you swallow. I wish you luck, and say you did the right thing, don't let that oof bring you down. -
https://www.bariatricpal.com/magazine/556-fact-or-myth-the-5-day-pouch-test/ Yes, it's fundamentally a fad diet. The basic premise is that since most were on a liquid diet just after surgery and we lost weight like gangbusters then, all we have to do is go back to a liquid diet again. Reality check - even those of us who were never on a liquid diet still lost like gangbusters initially, as that initial drop has nothing to do with the composition of the diet, only the very low calorie level that is forced upon us by the recent surgery. If you want to do a "reset", go back to a basic meat and green vegetable diet to help you detox from whatever junk has crept back into your diet.

Where do you want to be with your weight loss 1 year from now?
Suzannesh posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi Where do you want to be in 1 year from now? When I had weight loss surgery, I had no idea how long it was going to take me to lose weight; I was older than most of you and everyone l drops their weight at different speeds. Most all of us ladies know that men lose much faster than we do. For me it took me about 14 months to lose 105 pounds. I was thrilled it only took me that long. I know when I started this journey like the rest of you I wanted it to just melt off of me. As first it felt like it was, but I knew that would slow down and it did. What I want you to do it take it in small steps. Set you goals by weeks or by a month, and DO NOT put yourself down if you don’t reach that goal. Remember we are all individuals. I had a walking buddy and she was good to keep me motivated and when she was down I did the same for her. She had sleeve surgery with Dr. Aceves about 6 months after I had mine. I was honored when she asked me to go with her for her surgery. Mix things up, become creative with your food ideas. I actually have become a much better cook now that I am healthy and at my goal weight, but that didn’t happen overnight. I started searching out recipes that I could incorporate in my lifestyle and something that taste great and that my husband and I both would eat. Find the Protein that you like and find 50 different ways to cook with it and watch your carbs. chicken happens to be a protein that I use the most. Those sneaky carbs have a way of messing up your weight loss. If you are eating carbs make them WHOLE GRAIN carbs, not whole wheat—the key word is Whole Grain. Summer is coming along find some great salads and put your protein in along with a little fresh fruit—like strawberries and then make the salad your entire meal. Watch the dressing that you are using. I learned to NOT put the dressing on my salad, but dip my forks into the dressing and with every bite I always get dressing. So look at the calendar and put a goal in your mind where you would like to be one year from today. Some will be there and some will not. Don’t overwhelm yourself with too big of a goal. I also used to like to look at catalog or magazines that had beautiful clothes that I wanted to be able to buy when I reached my goal. Looking at these beautiful clothes kept me from eating too. Do what works best for you. I will admit I have bought a lot of new clothes once I reached my goal. If you haven’t picked your doctor yet I would like to tell you the Dr. Aceves is the very best that you can have for your surgery. If you have any questions about him, I am more than happy to answer anything you would like to know. I wanted the best I could have and after a lot of research and talking to people on these boards, I knew he was the one.:attention: I wish you great success, remember do this one day at a time. If you had a bad day the good news is that day ends and you can start all over the next day. Hugs,:cheer2: Suzanne Sleeved 10/210/2008 -
I know I am depressed. I know I am depressed because of my weight. That only makes me eat more because I am an emotional eater. Should I get on meds now or wait until after surgery. I've had depression as long as I can remember in spurts. I am ok for a while and then I am in a funk like I am now. I just feel hopeless and tired all the time. I have no interest in anything really. I can barely get up for work. Even spending time with my husband and kids is a task.

Thank u everyone for your kind words! The before and after pics were a big inspiration for me so I wanted to post my progress. If I can do it anyone can. It still doesn't seem real to me sometimes that I have real lost that much weight. My mind haven't caught up yet but I am very happy! -
Good deal on being so close to the big day. I can surely relate to the yo-yo thing. I haven't had too many folks say anything along the lines of "just do it yourself". Most anyone that says anything at all says something supportive. They know that I struggled internally with the "Do it yourself, man" stuff for quite some time. My prior successful weight loss runs took both kitchen discipline as well as lot of hard work in the gym. The medical issues that I've had this past year have made it almost impossible to do my job, much less gym work. The surgery is a tool to help supplement this deficit. As progress occurs....hopefully mobility will and so will the leverage over the weight loss through greater activity. You've counted the hours. It won't be long. Looks like you've got a good start on the losing, too. Best wishes !!!!!

Yikes, in July changing insurance companies!
Linda Lu replied to BabyNicole's topic in Insurance & Financing
I had the same dilemma haing been approved by Harvard Pilgrim in November 07 and finding out my company was switching to BCBS Jan 1, 08. I lost the required amount of weight preop and was able to be scheduled for surgery the day after Christmas with the insurance company that had approved me. There has been no problem with BCBS picking up the cost of the fills; I jus get billed a co-pay like any other office visit. And...I love my band!! I've lost 73 lbs since starting the preop diet! Best of luck to you!
