Considering revision to Gastric Sleeve -- should I?
geronimo replied to Meley24's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Be sure they run tests for possible Gerd. It would be a bummer if you revise to a sleeve only to have you revise again down the road to RNY. -
Sample Letter for VSG Revision
Soli3l replied to Soli3l's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I have been through the denial process when I was going from lap band to vsg. I called insurance found out reason for denial and then followed the steps with my doctor to get it approved. It is stressful... My Issue right now is that I need revisión surgery but my insurance does not have any bariatric benefits. But any revisión with médical necessity not morbid obesity can be covered. I've got letters from doctors recommending the revision but state morbid obesity and this does not help with my approval as my revision has to get preauth. I'm trying to do the leg work myself because who better than yourself can get the ball rolling? -

For revisions how long on average does one have to await approval? -
Good evening, I am unsure if this is the correct forum to post my question, if it's not I apologize ahead of time. I wanted to know if there is a sample letter or template regarding Medical Necessity for VSG Revision due to complications. Such as: Letter from Patient to Health Insurance or Letter from Doctor to Health Insurance. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you. SoLiEL

I had a revision from a band to a sleeve in 2012 because my band ulcertated. When I had my sleeve, I was told that if it ever ulcerated I'd have have to revise to the bypass. I've been avoiding the symptoms for a year and now I can not eat or have a sip of Water without vomiting. I have heartburn almost always, and I belch frequently. I've moved to another state since surgery, and there are no Bari Surgeons in my area, and the GI dr's won't see me because I've had 5 abdominal surgeries. Anyway, has anyone had their sleeve ulcerate? What was the treatment? Has anyone had to revise from sleeve to bypass?

Band to Sleeve lose more slowly?
brittu replied to Tazwella's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I lost weight faster after revision than I had with the band. -
I'm 5 years out from my band to sleeve revision. I lost 120lbs and ended up at a goal weight I never imagined. In the last 18 months regain has become a problem. I'm now 40lbs above goal. I'm considering revising to a DS but am working w my doctor to lose weight via upping Protein and reducing carbs. Has anyone successfully battled regain and gotten back to goal? Care to share what worked for you?

Anybody in DC area?
SleeveandRNYchica replied to missy5099's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am in NVa having revision surgery. Thinking it will be mid to late September. I have one more weight in on 9/3. Then it goes to insurance!! -
Thank you all for your replies. I have decided against getting the fill back as I do not want the same issues to reoccur at some point and run the risk of either having a bigger unfill or losing the band all together. I cannot afford the cost of a revision surgery (I was a self-pay). The band is at a much healthier place today than a year ago with it on the loser side. I feel healthier, eat healthier. If this means I have to accept myself at 199lb instead of 190 or even my lowest weight ever of 180 lb, so be it. I was 270 lb six years ago. I would have been tipping the scale at +320 lb today if it wasn't for the band. I have to keep reminding myself that the enemy of good is better.

Just Curious about cc you were at for green zone.
KATHAT replied to tootyoyo's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
so its been almost a year and your not in the green yet??? yikes! have you lost any weight? I feel like I'm going down this same road! My doctor (through Kaiser) will not give more than .5cc per fill and will not do a fill more than once a month. I have a 10cc band too. I have ZERO restriction :-( and am 1 year post op and weigh exactly the same. I saw another doctor in November because mine wasn't available and he gave me 1cc fill which created an overfill and I couldn't even swallow my own saliva so they did a complete unfill the next day and made me wait another month to get a .5cc fill. So I was back at zero restriction and got depressed and didn't go back for 6 months. I have just today had my 4th .5cc fill since my unfill in November, so my calculation is that I should have 2cc in my band. Even after today's .5cc fill, I feel zero restriction. It is so frustrating. I am considering revision surgery to a sleeve or gastric bypass but am terrified of doing that. I am going to keep getting my monthly .5cc fills and if by the end of the year I still have no restriction then I am going to strongly consider a revision. I know people whom the band worked perfectly for and they hit "green" almost immediately. I have had no such luck. Sigh. -
Getting insurance coverage can be difficult. Generally the hospital and surgeon have staff that can assist you. Cost is generally a major concern. There are several different forms of Weight Loss Surgery (WLS). These different forms have different outcomes. In some you lose weight faster and deeper than others. Some have a higher probability of requiring revisions. (I decided that when I underwent this surgery I did not want to undergo it again.) Some forms of surgery are better suited for any co-morbitities you may have. For example I had GERD. If I got the sleeve it would only compound this problem and RNY was better suited for this condition. You might want to get briefed on the various steps you will need to go through - psych evaluation, classes, pre-op tests etc. You may want to start to attend Bariatric Surgery Support Group Meetings. They are free and generally occur monthly. Depending on the requirements of your insurance, you may need to go through a medically monitored diet and exercise program to qualify.

Considering revision to sleeve from band
LoisinStA posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my band removed 5 months ago due to aspiration pneumonia and lots of bacteria in my lungs from throwing up. I had the band put in April 2008 and did very well until the last 6 months when i started throwing up. I want to have the sleeve surgery but I have heard that is it very common to develop GERD and someone I know also developed a hernia and she is not losing weight. She had both surgeries done at the same time? Can that create the issues she had post-surgery? Thanks in advance for any advice, or experiences that you have had Forgot to mention that I now weigh 162 pounds and going up each week, I feel I need to have a surgical procedure to get me back to optimal weight and keep me there, -
First, let me explain that I have no experience with bands, so whatever I say take with a grain of salt. This problem may not be GERD related. If it continues you might want to seek the professional help from your doctor. You indicated that your band is currently empty because of some erosion. There was one individual in our bariatric support group meeting that went from a band to a RNY revision because his band was eroding though his stomach. The band had to be removed. The erosion was very serious.

Band to Sleeve and other questions!
iamshazza replied to iamshazza's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Thanks for the reply! I did call my surgeon's office yesterday and I spoke to Nurse Kim at length. I decided in the end to move forward with seeing if I could get the revision covered by insurance. Waiting for insurance specialist to call me back. I'm still even now going back and forth about it. I keep thinking if it's this hard maybe I shouldn't be doing it...if I'm this unsure. But really, I've lost only about 40 lbs with the band. And currently I seem to be going back and forth between 247-249. For like 3 weeks now. And really, I'm not eating that much...and I really can't eat greasy, fried food because my gallbladder will really make me pay. But what do I know. Not much apparently -
The BIG Book on the Gastric Sleeve!
gsusser replied to Alex Brecher's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all, It's nice to find a place to get info and hear from others. I'm just about through the qualifying process for insurance and will schedule sleeve surgery in a couple of weeks. A couple of quick questions. Is "The Big Book..." still relevant and up to date? Have there been many changes since the book came out a few years ago? Has it been revised since the first edition? I know it's not that old but things often change quickly in medicine. I'm an avid reader. Is there any other recommended reading material? Thanks. glenn -
I can totally understand your view here, which is completely legitimate based on your experience with the band. Believe me, I have had life-altering complications with mine. But! For anyone reading this thread who is considering a band, I think it would be prudent to say the following: --My fills do not hurt at all. They are completely painless. My fill-guy uses a numbing agent prior to sticking me. So if you can ask for this and they have it, it is useful for patients who can't tolerate the stick of a needle. --It is essential to integrate that any WLS will cost one time and money if one is to be successful with it. For bandsters, there may be more of a time-investment, in that we have lifetime followup, but really...it isn't any more time than we use to spend planning and executing our overeating moments, right? Again, I'm not trying to contradict what you are feeling....your experience has been a bad one (as has mine), but it would be a disservice to any readers out there to leave them with the impression that fills are intolerable and that the band followup is not worth the time and money spent. Good luck with your revision.

It was too late...
Threetimesacharm replied to BeautyInProgress's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had surgery in Mexico and it was the best thing I could have done. Have surgery now when you are young and have your whole life ahead of you. Don't wait; after my Mom passed I had plastic surgery and again the best thing I could have done for myself. I am sure your father is with you now and would want you to be healthy and lead a long life; try bariatric pal surgeons I am going again for a revision and using Dr Zavalza. best wishes
