  2. Do you mean the bariatric patient is jealous of someone, or that someone is jealous of the patient? If you mean the latter, absolutely! (The former.. not so much.. ) My MIL lives with me, (was 100 pounds overweight herself), and when I started losing enough to "show".. boy did those green eyes come out! Now she's working on losing, herself, and has done well so far. Jealousy isn't always bad, if it motivates change for the better...

What Post-Sleeve Rules Do You Break?

You know, I haven't, but I better get started soon, before the weather gets too cold. Smoked chicken is da bomb.. and smoked nuts. (And both are bariatric friendly!). Thanks for reminding me!
  4. I got mine from amazon. 120 chewable Bariatric fusion multi with ADEK for $34.99. One a day - so one bottle is a 4 mth supply before surgery and 2 mth supply after. It has everything but extra calcium citrate. Still looking for a good chewable for that. My surgery won’t be until around March. My NUT said to avoid the patches as they aren’t fully absorbed and can discolor your skin but I’m seeing that every program and set of instructions are different. I am avoiding the vitamin patches anyway because I have psoriasis. Keep in mind that your grocery budget will go down after surgery so that will help with budgeting for your vitamins. At least that’s how I justify it. Lol

    Introduction Post

Hello everyone.... My name is Ilene and I just joined Bariatric Pal. I’m having sleeve surgery on 11/15 and it is starting to get VERY real. My liquid diet (modified) starts this week, my pre-surgical visit is this week, my final tests (endoscopy/colonoscopy) is this week....you get the idea. I do have an advantage.....I’m doing this with my very supportive husband. In fact, he had his surgery on October 4. Everything went really well and his recovery has been textbook, so I have had the opportunity to see first hand (we’ll, as close as possible) exactly what I am getting into. We went to all appointments with the surgeon together from Day 1 until after surgery (schedule conflicts) and continue to look out for one another. But now it’s happening to ME, and I’m both excited and TERRIFIED. I just turned 46 this month, I have 3 children (12 year old boy and 10 year old girl/boy twins, and the twins are both Autistic) and I want to be someone they can count on for the long haul. I want to have the energy to take them places. I fear diabetes in my future (family history on both sides). I KNOW this surgery is the right thing to do, and I really have no doubts. But that doesn’t mean I’m not scared S$&Tless! I’m hoping that I can get to know others who are going through this, like me, and we can get through this together! -Ilene

    Vitamin B questions

I'm paying over $75/mo for the bariatric SF chewable: multivitamin, calcium citrate w D & biotin. Has anyone found a lower price? Sent from my U673C using BariatricPal mobile app
  7. One more thing. If you go to the ASMBS (American society for metabolic and Bariatric surgeons) or something close to that, they have a physician finder. One of the search criteria is to find doctors who will care for other doctors patients. In my area both large practices will treat other patients. For me, that was a huge piece of mind before having surgery.
  8. My family doc likes to refer for everything - I swear they won't even look at a mole anymore! It's like I can count on them for a respiratory infection or UTI, other than that, expect a referral. I see more specialists...it's crazy. I do see my primary on Monday to discuss all of this. My 1st plan is to get her on board w/surgery to begin with - I don't see why she won't be, especially with all my back problems - but I've only been seeing her for a couple yrs (prev long time pcp retired) and we've not discussed my weight that much. Once I have her on board maybe I can go back and say local place isn't working out, if I went to MX would you help w/pre-op testing and post-op follow-up? But I have a strong suspicion going out of country will make her uneasy. She could surprise me though. @Apple1I'm going to talk to my husband about MX and the Bariatric Pal set up. It could end up being my best option if my doc will help with follow-up/aftercare. I live in SE PA, between Reading & Philly. We just moved closer to Reading, so I'm hoping to fly out of Allentown as I think it will be less congested than Philly and hopefully have shorter lines. I really appreciate the help everyone is providing. It's amazing to have people to talk to who really get how I feel : )
  9. I use mostly regular stuff. Chewable children's complete multi, liquid calcium citrate, super b complex from Walmart. Dissolvable biotin and b12 from costco. The only Bariatric one I use is Bari melts iron. Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app
  10. I don't recall seeing what your self pay cost is, but there are places you can go in the US for $9000-$12000. I paid $8999 in Ft Lauderdale at Bariatrix, FL. Dr wizman offers BLIS, but I used Dr Taggar. Blossom Bariatrics in Vegas seems good, and Dr Borland in Louisiana has gotten good reviews. Maybe one of these cities has a non stop flight? The other question I wanted to ask, is did you ask your insurance about complications or did you take your surgeons word? I wouldn't trust them, be your own advocate and ask your insurance company directly. I asked mine, and they were very clear that they would treat complications just like any other claim. It didn't matter where I had surgery, whether it was in our out of network, if they paid, or if I paid, etc. Good luck! Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app
  11. At this point I've spent a couple thousand hours looking at bariatric related stuff. I've watched the actual surgeries on youtube, read a lot of studies, and watched the likes of Dr. Matthew Weiner and Dr. Duc Vuong. I'm always excited to see a new piece of information (and I am still learning new stuff all the time). I don't work at the moment, so this is like a job/hobby. And if I can help others, all the better. What is a self-esteem boost is y'all listen to me better than my own family. (Funny how that works). But, the problems are always the same. My MIL (who lives with me) started trying to lose weight.. is doing well. She has lost about 30lbs, and suddenly it's the dreaded stall/scale bounce up. So now I hear her moaning and groaning, just like everyone on this board! Aaaahhhhh! Lol! Both hubby and MIL lose 30 or 40lbs (they were both 100lbs overweight to start).. and then the scale stops budging, they lose heart and stop watching what they are eating as closely. I'm watching WHY DIETS FAIL unfold, right before my eyes. They refuse to weight/count/measure. It's ok to drink a few calories or grab fast food. Just this once. I was in a hurry. I was out of town. Yup.
  12. It IS really important to have follow-up care, routinely, after surgery. This is handled by a bariatric program if you live close enough. If you go a distance to get surgery or move away, your primary care doc can do it. Some family docs don't like taking on bariatric patients, so you'll want to have the discussion with yours to see how he/she feels. My primary doc likes referring patients for bariatrics. She was nervous about Mexico, but did everything she could to help, not hinder. I should mention she is my NEW primary doc. My last one was going to do everything she could to stop me. Bye bye doc! If you want to think about Mexico, I highly recommend getting a nonstop flight to San Diego the day before your surgery is scheduled. It is about a 6 hour flight from BWI, I don't know where you'd be flying out of (PA is a big state!). You would need a passport, and that takes several weeks to come in (about 6 if you don't put a rush on it). That is the first thing to do if you decide to go that route. There are no hoops by going to Mexico. But, it also means you have to educate yourself. You'll receive a diet plan to follow, but everything else is pretty much up to you. I attend my local bariatric support group meetings and get my vitamin panels through my primary physician. I have a GI doctor that I can see if problems pop up down the road. During the initial healing period, if I had a bariatric-related emergency, I knew where my closest hospital that had a bariatric program was located. (An hour away). (Obviously if it were life/death, go to the nearest ER.) If you went to Florida or Michigan, you'd need all these things to be in place too.. not just Mexico. I live in Cumberland, MD. Don't know how close I am to you, but just know you aren't alone...
  13. I was just wondering does anybody know where I can get the bariatric vitamins and minerals because I'm on kind of a budget hey buddy can you help me Sent from my SM-T350 using BariatricPal mobile app

I am two weeks post-op from getting my VSG with Dr. Noel Williams at Hospital of UPenn. While I encountered some small scheduling snafus with the office, overall I’ve had a very positive experience. I’m covered by Aetna and had to attend 3-4 medical weight management sessions with Dr. Williams and his team of nutritionists in Valley Forge. Dr. Williams met with me each and every time and always remembered personal details about my journey. Day-of surgery he met with my entire family and filled them in on the process and my recovery status. They loved him too! I did end up in the bariatric ward of HUP and had fabulous well-informed, attentive nurses who really helped me to get up and on my way to recovery ASAP. Ultimately I decided to go with Penn because I had felt Einstein and Main Line Health felt a little too “advertise-y” for me. Like the surgeries were being pushed as a cure-all, but Penn, I felt, was a much more straightforward presentation. Also, Penn is such a renowned hospital, I felt that reputation did something to put my subconscious at ease. Good luck with your decision and journey!!
  15. I’m 10 weeks out and am on an insanely high antibiotic right now. The md attending me at the hospital spoke with my bariatric surgeon and I got the green light. It’s more the steroids/anti inflammatory meds that are a concern. I am on steroids for the swelling in my ear cartilage and being 10 weeks out, my bariatric surgeon approved them along with a regime of RX grade Pepcid. This is to help keep the risk of ulcers down. As long as your bariatric surgeon approves it, it’s all good. Sleeved 8/7 HW: 256 SW: 248 CW: 213 @ 10 weeks post op 5'7" GW: 150

    Does it taste good?

The bariatric advantage makes me feel full but I'm doubling the liquid in a serving because I can't drink it to thick. I also got protein Waters for times I don't want a shake. I sampled them but they are mainly because for the after surgery recovery liquid diet phase. They are kind of sweet but I poured them over a full glass of ice and it Waters them down and they are fine after that. Everything could be totally different after surgery though. I have heard some say their taste buds change and the tolerance for what they can swallow. Sent from my XT1635-01 using BariatricPal mobile app
  18. I had my first drink (white wine-one glass) at 4 months post op. My team recommended I wait 4 months to try it. I have had it a few times since then, and am at 11 months post op now. Haven't had any in over 3 months, because I am currently taking tramadol and gabapentin for pain. The most I've allowed myself in one sitting is 3 glasses of wine, and it gave me a buzz. Maybe just a little more of a buzz than before surgery. I used to like beer, but haven't tried that, even though I do fine with carbobation. The only drawback I see, is that incorporating alcohol takes up my calories and carbs. I made room for this, however, when I chose to drink. Just resulted in me not being able to eat as much good food on the particular days that I drank. I agree that everyone will react to alcohol in different ways. You may or may not be able to tolerate it post op. I also think we should listen to our doctor/bariatric team on when to start drinking again, if allowed.

    Does it taste good?

I've never tried that kind. I use bariatric advantage. I buy the big bags for home and the packets for travel (flying). It's too thick for my liking so I mix it with water according to instructions and then add about 4-6 ounces of original unsweetened almond milk or nonfat milk if I'm at hotels without access to almond milk and a ton of ice. I also discovered it doesn't stir (dissolve) well with a spoon so I had to get a blender bottle to shake it really good for a couple minutes. I've been drinking one a day (breakfast) since my lap band was removed in Feb. 2017 In preparation for the sleeve revision and to help keep me from gaining weight in the interim. They taste pretty good. However, I'm pre-op so I hope my taste buds don't change after surgery because I've stocked up for a couple months. Sent from my XT1635-01 using BariatricPal mobile app

The hoops I've jumped through so far

I wanted to lay out just what I've had to push through to get to the bariatric surgery. I don't want to scare anyone - because the list looks (and somewhat feels) overwhelming. However, all the appointments are made in order to make sure that I'm healthy enough to do this surgery. And I'll say that visiting each doctor - especially as I approach 50 - has wound up being reassuring, above all. I've always been plagued with aches and pains my entire life - mostly joint problems. Most of my physical issues aren't serious - just really freaking annoying. Arthritis, cysts, bursitis, tendonitis, allergies, asthma, sinus issues, GERD, hearing loss, etc. So, every day it seems like something, and sometimes it can affect my lifestyle. But overall, it's nothing that makes my health poor in medical terms. And even those things, I've tried to fix. My point here is that hearing that my heart is in great shape and my lungs are perfect and my blood pressure and blood tests and my Pap smear and mammogram all look great - well, that's terrific news! It means all the issues my body has right now are more inconvenience rather than dangerous. And even the inconvenient issues I pay attention to - in order to keep myself healthy and my quality of life good. Anyway,..... here's the list of appointments and procedures I've had in order to get to point of being cleared for bariatric surgery: Primary Care Physician - for physical. Also to get the referral to my bariatric surgeon. This visit included blood work (CBC, CMP, TSH, PT/PTT) and urinalysis, which wound up being needed for the bariatric surgery anyway. Two birds, one stone. Bariatric Surgeon - for discussion on surgery Mammogram Gynecologist - for well woman visit and Pap smear Pulmonologist - initial meeting Pulmonologist - giving them the chip to my CPAP machine, and taking a breathing test. Resulted in clearance from pulmonologist for surgery Cardiologist. EKG, cardiologist clearance for surgery Nutrition Assessment, 6 months supervised diet with hospital nutritionist* Upper GI with double contrast Primary Care Physician Clearance * The 6 months of nutritionist counseling was a requirement of my insurance I am currently working on items #10 and #11. I anticipate that taking another few weeks - likely by the end of October. Then I should be able to go back to the bariatric surgeon for review, and to schedule the surgery. The week before surgery, I need to go on a zero carb diet - in order to shrink my liver, which makes laproscopic surgery possible. Then it should be about a week or so off work (I'll just take vacation days), and then back to work. Hopefully I'll have this done before Thanksgiving, although I'm fine with whatever date it's done by. And that's where I'm currently at! I have two kids still living at home, as well as two that are grown and doing their own thing. My one child in particular has a lot of my joint issues (and is a little, thin thing - which just goes to show that this stuff is hereditary). She's had tons of doctor's visits and physical therapy visits during the time period I've been doing all my own doctor's appointments. She also goes to counseling occasionally and also needs to see the orthodontist every 3-4 weeks. That's a ton of time spent on doctor's visits! The only way I can even see being able to get this all done is because I work 2-3 days per week at home, and can just schedule the doctor's visits on those days. I have NO.IDEA how someone who didn't have that luxury would be able to get all these appointments in - especially if they were super heavy and had a difficult time getting around. It makes me think there must be tons of people out there who would really benefit from this kind of surgery who can't get it - because they lack the time, ability, money and fortitude to keep going on this wheel for a while. This has been hard for me - and I have all those things available to me. But I guess where there's a will, there's a way, right?

    Does it taste good?

I prefer premier protein. 30g per shake, and tastes great. You can pick up an 18 pack at Costco for $24.95, and they have it $5.00 off pretty much once every quarter. The protein powder is also great. I also like Syntrax Matrix protein powders. The flavors are really tasty, and mix really well with almond milk or water. They carry 23 grams of Protein per serving. The Bariatric Pal shakes might be tasty, but there is no way that I would pay $15.00 for just 6 shakes...Especially, ones with just 15g of Protein. The Fruit Protein drinks seem to be a good deal, but why are they so much cheaper?

    My mom is not well

Yes - try to see a gastroenterologist, not a bariatric doctor. At this point in the game, you need a specialist!

    Vitamins

Heres my 2 cents: 1. Dont get gummies. They're not very well absorbed and thus you aren't going to get ur required nutrients from them. 2. While it may seem to be pricey buying the Bariatric Advantage brand, u only need their Multi chew and their calcium chews if u go that route. And a b12 sublingual from any brand. If u go the non Bariatric Advantage route, u gotta worry about buying bottle after bottle after bottle of different vitamins and minerals to satisfy ur requirements. Add all those different bottles up, who knows how much total ur spending. ALL your vitamin and mineral requirements are in the Bariatric Advantage Multi chew and calcium chew. I have 1 bottle/1 package: I take 2 multis a day from the bottle and 3 calciums a day from the bag. Thays it. And the b12 sublingual once/week. Just found it a lot easier and less stressful to go the B.A route than to worry about all that other stuff. We have enough to worry about, especially the first few months, without adding all the stress of which vitamin and which store and when its on sale and etc. Maybe after the first few months when ur feeling more secure with how to eat and live then u could venture out and piecemeal ur vitamin requirements together, but right now, I'd go the BA route. Ps. I have nothing financially to do with BA. Just my personal opinion and what i found helped me tremendously, at least so soon after this life changing event. I'm 1 mo postop. Good luck with whatever u choose.
