    June 23

I love hearing about all of these successes! Congratulations, everyone! I also had surgery June 23 and stayed an extra day (3 nights) because I was really dizzy and unable to walk more than 30 steps or so. I was not prepared for the nausea, but the meds helped. By Day 2 I was also questioning whether it was worth it, but by the evening of the 25th, all nausea stopped. I'm also allergic to Dilaudid, and so had to have some mega doses of Benadryl, which makes me really loopy. By Thursday morning, I hadn't had any Dilaudid or Benadryl for 24 hours, I had a hot shower, and I felt like a new person. I was able to sip 3 oz. of Water every 30 minutes and I was so ready to come home to get some real sleep. Since then I've felt great. My only discomfort comes from not eating the right consistency (going too thick on the liquids -- Greek yogurt was really painful in the first few days of full liquids). Black bean Soup was too thick on the first few days of pureed. I'm figuring out what my tolerances are. Now, 3 weeks later, my main focus is trying to get 80 grams of Protein in each day. I'm introducing 2-3 Tbsp of pureed chicken meat into my Healthwise Soups and drinking 2 unjury Protein shakes a day with Greek yogurt and fruit Snacks.

    Fairy tale

It really does take alot of planning. I am one of those people that eats every 2-3 hours. Something with Protein. Baby bel lights, greek yogurt, chicken, fish.. I have never counted calories but my fitness pal says I average between 700-900 calories a day. I strive to get 75-90 g of protein. I have now gotten mFP set on 1000 cal. Strive to hit that to stop the weight loss and even things out. I tried swimming and weight training. But walking has been the thing for me. I started... or should I say struggled with a mile at first... slow going. Now I do about 4 miles a day and average about a 13 minute mile walking. So pretty fast pace or at least for me it is. Exercise... find what works for you because if you hate it you wont do it and I believe it is a key part to this whole process. Again thanks you guys for all your kind words!!

    I can do this!

Okay, I think I can do this! I freaked out a little about lowering my carbs and upping my protein for my pre-op diet. Although I've been on and off of diets for 20 years, I have never tried a high protein diet because of my addiction to potatoes. The first week of trying, I was visiting family in another state. I had a mini-meltdown when I discovered I really did not know much about carbs in the foods I ate. I decided that I did know that I could eat meat, cheese, lettuce, and eggs. So I decided I could really focus on protein for breakfast and lunch with no or very little carbs and then not stress about dinners. I thought it was at least a start. Upon my return home, I had another meltdown. I was exhausted from the 13 hour drive the day before and just wanted something to eat. I had a protein bar for breakfast and one for lunch, but realized I would need to go grocery shopping. To tide me over I decided to have a yogurt and as I was eating it, read the back and realized how many carbs it contained. That's when I lost it. I felt that I did not have any idea what I was doing and that maybe this surgery wasn't going to work for me. Thankfully my husband was home and decided we needed to take a field trip (I'm a teacher, so he talked to me in my terms :-). I protested feeling that I needed to read the two South Beach diet books I had picked up and make a plan before heading to the store. He basically said that this wasn't that difficult and I could do it; I'd been talking daily about surgery for the last three months and reading like crazy. (A little background: my husband exercises at the gym 7 days a week and eats pretty healthy all the time, but never really knew how many carbs certain foods contained...he just makes sure to eat a balanced diet and stays away from potatoes.) We got to the store and started going through the isles reading labels and putting together foods I liked that could be for breakfast and lunch and snacks. This went really well and I was surprised at how many things we found. This all happened Wednesday, and I can say that each day I grow more confident that I am making the changes I need to to live a healthier life. I've also discovered that I enjoy cooking. We did go out on Friday and I was very pleased that I didn't crave fries. I had a salad without dressing and a chicken burger without the bun. On Saturday, we went to a baseball game and stopped by Subway (one of my favorite fast food places) and got a spinach salad with chicken and a cup of dressing on the side and didn't even use 1/4 of it. Tomorrow I meet with the nutritionist, so we'll see what other changes I need to make, but I feel good right now and think I can do this.

    Food tolerance

I get pretty nauseated when I eat something that doesn't agree with my new stomach. I'm over 2 months out, and some things make my stomach cramp, and then the nausea kicks in. I try really hard to only try one new food item per day. It's the craziest thing in the world, but some of the most bland food makes me sick, but mexican food was fabulous. I even ate some chips and salsa with my fajita meat, and felt fabulous. 2 days ago, I ate a Yoplait light yogurt Lemon flavor with a small amount of All Bran dry Cereal mixed in, and I was so sick. I really think every individual's body will react differently. I met a lady down here who can't tolerate the foods I can and vice versa. I've also heard just because it doesn't a certain food work right now, doesn't mean in a few months you'll have the same results. Good luck and let us know how things go. . .
  6. Yup I've also become lacrosse or milk Protein intolerant. Sipping a Protein shake made it sound like fireworks going off inside. I had a small Greek yogurt today and promptly had my my first dumping experience. On the upside I had not been for 6 days so it cleared me out lol. Tried a tiny bit of cheese melted in my refried Beans and again no good. So yip looks like I have to give up all things dairy for a while. Which I'm gutted about as I was relying on them to get me through!
  7. Am I getting enough food? Do I need an unfill? Last night I weighed 3 ounces of lean ground turkey before I cooked it. I added about 1/8 oz of shredded cheese, 3 very thin pickle slices, two small baby carrots and a tablespoon of baked Beans to round out my meal. I could not finish the burger - ate just over 1/2 of it - no bread - and that was with some ketchup and a bit of mayo on it that should have made it "slide" a bit. I ate the carrots and beans (again, wet food) but felt uncomfortable for over an hour after dinner. I think what I ate would easily fit in 1/2 cup measure but it seemed to be too much. Then, for Breakfast I had 2 heaping teaspoons of Greek yogurt with a sprinkling of Kashi Go Lean crunch - about 1/4 cup. I brought apple sauce but couldn't even take a bite of it because I felt overly full again. A few other things to consider: 1) I had a very bad stuck incident last week that resulted in two days of vomiting/sliming on all solid food 2) I recently flew (landed Sunday evening) 3) I have a sinus infection and am taking anti-biotics 4) I have my period Is less than 1/2 cup of food per meal a suitable amount for someone who needs to lose 125 lbs?

    im only 2 weeks post-op

I am 1 week post op. Dr told me 1 week liquids and 2 weeks food like apple sauce and yogurt. Nothing u actually have to chew at all. Then we would determine if I was ready for solids/food to be chewed. Hope this helps. I am new to this site. But would recommend u contact ur dr's office they should have given u a diet to follow. Good luck !
  9. I got sleeved on 5/30... I do my walking, the gas pain in my chest is hardly there now which is so nice because that was gonna be the death of me, now my problem is keeping food. Protein drinks, chicken broth, jello, pudding, yogurt.... I take in a little bit and about an hour or 2 later I'm ready to pray to the porcelain gods. What gives?! I tried small bites of actual food thinking it would help (had a stupid moment) because that obviously didn't work. I'm just kinda lost because I know I'm missing out on my protein and nutrients... Did anyone have this problem? Also, I've never had heartburn or indigestion so I'm not sure if this is it but I feel this gurgling ugliness in my chest area...

    This fast sucks

I'm on day 4 of pre op. Struggling at times but I haven't cheated... I am on full liquids so cottage cheese, cream Soups and yogurt are ok. I mix all my protein in with those typically. But it's getting old, quick. I feel your pain. A lot more difficult then I imagined it would be. Sent from my LGLS770 using the BariatricPal App

    Examples of pureed/soft foods

Check out the blog "the world according to eggface". SHe has a post devoted to the pureed phase. And when pureeing meat - you can add some low sodium stock to get it to puree. Although I mostly pureed either tuna or chicken with a little plain nonfat greek yogurt - think pureed tuna salad. Her ricotta bake recipe also makes for a nice warm savory change. During soft foods, I also did the tuna/chicken with greek yogurt - just not pureed. And baked tilapia - it's a fairly soft fish so as long as I chewed it well, it worked. When I baked it, I had it wrapped in parchment paper to keep it from drying out in the oven and just be careful not to overbake. Low sodium deli meat was also on my plan at this phase - again, chew very well.

    painful eating

Hi, I was banded on March 4, 2006. At first I had some problems eating but later on it got to the point where I could eat almost anything as long as I chewed it really well and not too much with occasional PB's. Lost 20 pounds during the last few months. Just was not able to make it back to TJ until last Thursday the 6th. I think I will be losing much faster now as I have lost 6 pounds already. Having lots of problems with anything I try to eat or drink and sometimes after the first few bites and some PB's I am then able to finish eating. This even happens with tea. But as I read here I am seeing that many others are describing the same things such as the first few bites, the pain, the sliming and so forth. So I am going to definately try the breath holding. I have been PB ing every time 4-5 times or more per day with liquids, slim fast, yogurt, soup and mashed pototoes which are the only things I have tried to eat since my fill. I am thankful for all the information everyone shares on this site hopefully one day I will be able to help other too. Keep talking! Sincerely,

    "You will fail"....question

Even though the pre-op liver shrinking included sweet shakes and bars, I am 6 weeks post-op and only occasionally feel a little pull towards cake, chocolate, pie, dessert. Mostly I can walk right past shop displays and can even watch those close-up food-porn shots on TV cooking shows without wanting to join in. A couple of spoonfuls of slightly sweet yogurt or maybe a couple of dried apple chips fix any desire for sweet food after dinner. For snacking, lite milk is sweet enough and has the Protein to get rid of hunger pangs. Four weeks post-op I was feeling over-confident because everything had gone smoothly, so I resumed my weekly trip to the farmers market and while I was there I bought a slice of quiche and ate half the filling. I thought it was only egg and milk or cream, and wouldn't be a problem. But I had eaten lunch only half an hour before. Whoa! The reaction was so extreme and awful - sweating, dizziness, needing to vomit, couldn't sit down, couldn't stand up, had difficulty catching my breath - for about 15 minutes that it put me right back on track. If that was dumping I never want to go there again!
  14. I usually eat a few ounces of cheese or a Yoplait yogurt or a bowl of Cinnamon Roll oatmeal with a spoonful of peanut butter (I read about adding the PB on these boards...it's very tasty!). Every once in a while, I'll have a bowl of Raisin Bran or Special K.

    12 days since banding

You need low calories and low sugar amounts so your body can heal and try and burn the fat cells on your body. If you eat sugar, it will burn this as fuel and not the fat on your body. Use nonfat greek yogurt with Stevia. SF popsicles, SF jelly and Crystal light flavor drinks to mix up the flavors and varieties. Stay on track and you will be okay. Best wishes

    Favorite Home soft food.

This stuff counts as mushies??? I guess I need to re-read my post op diet. I'm still on my last days of clears but now I'm really looking forward to mushies if this is the case? I thought it was all about yogurt, watered down grits, watery mashed potatoes, etc. I sure didn't expect meat of any sort, pureed or not. Kewl! Tiff, how ya doin??
  17. Oregondaisy

    Favorite Home soft food.

I liked cooking ground turkey, adding a little bit of taco seasoning (I don't like it really spicy) mixing in sour cream and cheddar cheese. Another favorite of mine is Greek yogurt. If you don't get the flavored kind, you can mix in sugar free Jello or sf syrups, with a little splenda or stevia. Greek yogurt has double the Protein of other yogurts and half the carbs.
  18. Is it a good idea to get a fill at this point? I'm seeing my doctor tomorrow, and of course, I will ask his opinion and follow his orders. That stated, I'd like to hear what banded folks think...sure my doc is the expert, and I respect that, but for now I'd like to hear from you all.... I was banded 1 month ago. I feel like I have restriction. I say that because I can't eat much at one time (1 cup-1.5 cup), get stuck (very painful) if I don't chew very well, stay full for approximately 2-3 hours. I mainly eat yogurt, Protein shakes, tuna, salads...etc, things that go down easily. I have no desire to eat most foods because they will get stuck or because I'm just not hungry. I eat fewer than 1200 calories a day and I am 90% satisfied and do not find it to be much of a struggle. Right now I'm comfortable with my food intake. CONFLICT....I have not lost weight in 2 weeks (since starting soft foods). I'm not terribly bothered by not loosing weight, but I will be if I don't lose soon. Should I be loosing at this point? And should my current lack of weightless lead me to get a fill, even though I don't feel like I need more restriction? So that's it basically: Feel restriction with only slight discomfort, eating a great diet, not loosing weight. Oh, and some additional info: Consuming less than 1200 calories a day. I track every bite of food I eat via My Fitness Pal Less than 90 carbs a day (from fruit, veggies, yogurt, beans), 60-90 grams of protein Around 45 grams of fat (mostly from eggs, mashed Beans, tiny bit of salad dressing, and lite mayo in tuna- must have mayo to get the tuna down due to dryness). I'm eating about half of what I ate pre-band and it's all healthy stuff (and I wasn't even gaining weight at that caloric count pre-band) I'm exercising 30-40 minutes a day 3 tines a week (which is new for me). My bad...I'm only getting in about 1/2 of my Water due to fullness. Please chime in with your thoughts...

    Lactose Intolerance

Lots of people become lactose intolerant after surgery. Use your lactase pills. Yogurt is tolerated by some, since the sugar is already digested. Can you get by with yogurt and lactose free milk? I also think the surgery and dietary changes deal a really big blow to the gut biome environment. Try to re=establish a healthy biome with yogurt, real fermented sauerkraut (in Sprouts), root vegetables, broccoli/cabbage, mushrooms, probiotics. Avoid sugar and processed stuff.
  21. I too had the sleeve 2 years ago an suffered with severe acid reflex an they said only thing would save my stomach an asophagus was revision to bypass an i had it august 18th no more acid reflex but scared how small I will get because everyone in my family that had bypass is like a size 0 so far I'm 37 pounds down an they want me to start working out an i told the doctor I still can't hold solid foods down an she said she's not to much concerned with that as long as I stay hydrated lol but I am concerned all I can hold down is liquids an yogurt an i tried smashing avocado that stayed down
  22. Just wondering for anyone who has had their band for awhile, if anyone else has food tolerance problems throughout the day Morning: My band is very finicky, usually I can only eat a yogurt or drink a protien shake or have a sugar free instant Breakfast with nonfat milk, but anything solid and it usually doesn't go down real well. Lunch: Still a bit tight, and most of the time, solids don't go down real well, so I try to stick to Soup, But I am getting sick of this, and when I try to eat even like a block of cheese, it may or may not go down. This is frustrating because I am hungry but never know what to eat for lunch now. dinner Time: It takes me awhile to eat, but I can usually end up eating a whole plate of food, and I am still hungry sometimes even after a full plate of food. It's so weird to me that my band is so tight all day and then at night, I can eat a whole entire plate of food! I want to get another small fill because I am a SLOW looser (only lost 26 lbs so far in 4 1/2 months) but I am afraid that I wont be able to eat anything all day if I do. Just wondering if anyone elses band is this finicky? And what do you eat? BTW..I work out at least 5 days a week and it is so frustrating that I am not loosing weight faster. I have even cut out almost all bread, I dont drink soda, I never eat fast food. I just eat a lot at night because I am hungry from not eating much all day. Is this kind of what it "should be like" and I am just not giving it enough time yet?

    Constipation?

I have only had a couple of episodes of major constipation. Miralax is fabulous, and I found that when I would eat yogurt and take Probiotics, I became more regular. I go every day now. I think it's because I'm in a different stage, and I drink my normal cup of coffee every morning. The only time I skip a day is when I eat a bunch of cheese and Protein only. My surgeon said no no to laxatives and stool softeners used on a regular basis only because our bodies get used to having the stimulant effect. Also, stool softeners tend to pull the fluids from the rest of your body to soften the stool with more liquids to help it pass. He did say if we had to take a stool softener then to increase our clear liquid intake to compensate for the stool softener usage. I've only had to take Miralax a few times (like 4 -5 times) over the last 11 months. I mix it in some juice or crystal light, and drink it slowly. I also only use a half dose. It may take it a few more hours to work, but I'm not looking to have explosive poops after being constipated.
