  1. Hi all! So,I went to my 1 week post op appt today and I have lost 8 lbs in 7 days! Yippee!! I have been on the clear liquid diet for a whole week and now have graduated to the full liquid diet and can have protein shakes as well as my vitamins.. I am wondering if anyone has any recipes or suggestions for the full liquid phase? I'm kinda clueless...I know I am gonna try some tuna, boiled egg and a lil lite mayo in the blender tomorrow but that's really all I can think of. I tried a protein shake for the first time today and i got about 5 ozs down over the course of an hour and a half but I couldn't finish the last 3 ounces,it was toooo sweet for my new sleeve. I am so happy I made this decision. I finally gave myself something and it feels great to know I will lose my weight and KEEP it off!!! =))
  2. Today in my group session the Dr said that not losing weight can delay your surgery. They want to ensure you are committed to making changes before the surgery. She said "we're operating on your stomach, not your brain." I thought that was a very valid point. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

    Whats the change?

Think of your band as a belt around your waist. As you lose weight you will need to adjust the belt to fit you. That's how the band works. It's a belt around your stomach. Instead of tightening it up per se, the saline tightens it. As we lose weight, there's a gap that needs to be filled which allows you to eat more. After you get your fill of saline, your band is tight again which aids in you not eating very much and being careful about what you eat so you won't get stuck. Hope this helps.

    New obsession

Coffee. I always liked an occasional latte, but I now drink coffee everyday. I usually do decaf but ocassionally if I'm really tired I'll do regular. I also weigh myself daily, sometimes more than once. If you weigh yourself right after you wake up and go to the bathroom, before you eat or anything, it's the lightest you'll be all day I use that as my "true" weight, as I can "gain" at least a pound or 2 throughout the day. I always "lose" it by morning though

    Gaining weight

Suggest u keep track of foods u eat (I love myfitnesspal and it is free). I am 8 weeks out and ...my goal is 800 calories per day and 65-70'grams off Protein.per day. I do eat fruit with my Protein shakes..sometimes bran cereals with milk, veggies, very little rice, 1/2 slice of 40 calorie bread, I try to eat my protein first. And many times I cannot anything else on my plate cause I am completely satisfied. Exercise has really helped me with a stall I was having for two weeks. I Do cardio for 30 minutes at a medium strenuous pace..the I do machines for my upper /lower body. Get back to basic and u should start losing again. Also r u eating very salty food. ..part of your weight gain maybe be salt retention.

    One Year VSG Anniversary

Hey Lis. Congratulations on making it through a year relatively unscathed. Everything is relative, huh? Whoever said this is the easy way to lose weight is off their rocker. But, we all have our reasons for doing it so I guess we have to trust that once we make this difficult decision it's the best path for us. I hope that things continue to improve for you and that you are happy with your results. Best wishes, Mary

    am I getting enough exercise?

I am pre surgery. I started lap swimming about 18 months ago as a way to loose weight I have a knee problem and weight bearing exercise was an issue. I am not really a class person. The thing about lap swiming is if you slow down you just stop and it's clear you are'nt working very hard. Anyway in a year of swimming and trying to make better food choices but not succeding very well (bringing lean cuisine for lunch, but otherwise eating what I wanted) I lost 30 pounds. In the last 6 months very much dieting and preparing for surgery I have lost another 47 pounds. I make a serious effort to swim 7 days a week. My biggest recommendation is to buy a water proof MP3 player. Makes all the difference in the world. You can find them on Amazon.

Hi guys... new to this site Help!

Hey Nicole , Thanks for your response, I just read about some not being able to handle the Protein shakes. I'll let my daughter know. And thanks for the reassurance about the lump not being a hernia because that is exactly what I thought it was lol.... .My daughter is 22 I didn't want her riding the same roller coaster as me, so when we both shot up to exactly the same weight we decided it was time.. i hope to catch you on here again ... night
  11. Hello All, Well I am in my 4 month of getting the band. I am from Minnesota. My Doctor is Dr Lee about 25 miles from my home town. If all goes well, I will be able to have my surgery towards the end of April. Last week I had my pysch evalutation. Won't get my results back for a few weeks. I have written my letter to the insurance company and have to wait for eval to see if I qualify and if they will cover it. I did some reading on here and boy I have alot of the same feelings others do. I know I need to lose weight, but I am terrified that I will fail again. I am getting better at my portion control and have been exercising. My family isn't very supportive of me in my new adventure. I come from a family of over weight people. It will be good to have some support. I do have a couple of friends that have had it done and are very successful. I will keep checking back for info and support. Thanks for listening Michelle

thanks. I have found lots of useful info already. I do have one question. How do you get the weight lose scale at the end of messages?
  13. Hi Butterfly512- I am also in a similar situation. I also have BC/BS MI, They did enforce the 6 mo of doctors visits before I was approved. I also have several weight-related health issues, but they wouldn't waive that requirement. I had my pre-op appt. on 4/7, with a scheduled surgery date of 4/13, but they delayed it, and requested a stress test before I could proceed. So now I am waiting again! Yes it is very frustrating, but my point is, it will happen when the time is perfect. (at least that's what I keep telling myself) Where are you having your surgery? I am going to the Barix Clinic, in Ypsilanti. Best of luck to you!
  14. I have blue cross blue shield of michigan thru my husband's employer, my bmi is 35 with some other health issues, and I am told by the bariatric surgeons office that it's the best insurance to have, she said we can "work around" the 6 month diet requirement before surgery and told me to write on paper documenting all the diets I have tried over the years, maybe that will suffice for the 6 month requirement? Does bcbsmi still even require that? Plain & simple..I am anxious, not just to get the wls but being in limbo and waiting just makes me deal with the stress of my weight problem, bad eating habits & failing diets even longer..and actually my stupid mentality about it causes me to just want to wait until my preop diet and surgery to start the process of trying to lose weight, therefore I eat like a dummy in the meantime, feel like crap and the vicious cycle goes on for now. Idk if anyone can relate? From what I can gather, it might be around 1 month before I can get my procedure done..not bad of course ..I just hope nothing holds it up or goes wrong, my primary dr is already giving me the impression that he'll take his sweet time getting the letter of medical necessity letter (whatever it's called) & cardiac clearance together for me :-/ Between wanting this chapter and change for the better to happen sooner than later in my life..and the fact that I am in my mom's wedding in june, summer activities are coming ..etc. I want to recover and get my new journey and goal started without interfering with it all. I was very pregnant during last summer lol..I want to enjoy this one with the family! So..I need advice on the insurance, time frame to get surgery, and any of the other stuff I rambled on about lol Thanks :-)
  15. Julie, My best friend just had her bypass done with Dr. McKeen. She's having a hell of a time. Her surgery was on June 11th. She still hasn't eaten more than a teaspoon of cheese. He extended her work leave until August 11th now. I am wondering what he told her her goal weight should be. She's 5'6".

It isn't easy and right now you aren't seeing the rewards. When you start losing weight you will realize it is worth it.

    Back pain

Yes! I'm also 4 weeks out and having the same weird back pain! I'm looking forward to discussing with my surgeon later this week. I've read on a few threads the idea that this is related to the positioning and tugging during surgery. I've also heard the weight re-distribution theory. Either way, I'm thinking a visit to a chiropractor with a nice follow up visit to a massage therapist will be just the thing! I'm trying to hold off until I've lost 50 lbs and then do the hour long massage as a reward!
  18. I quit going for weigh-ins and fills or any check ups of any type for my lap band. I have regained approximately 35lbs of my lost weight since my surgery. I still have some reflux when I eat certain foods and have the vomiting. The shape of my stomach has changed. What happens to the band after this length of time and is it still any good...does anyone know? I appreciate any help with this.

    I'm excited and nervous

@@jwidner Please don't be disappointed - we usually gain weight after surgery with all of the fluids from the IVs and swelling. Concentrate on getting in your fluids and Protein - don't worry so much about the scale at this point! Good luck at your appointment!
  21. Hi there, I have started working out again. 5-6 days a week with pretty intense one hour "Bootcamp" type classes or spin classes. Like most, I'm experiencing a stall. I stalled in February. Had a fantastic loss when I was on vacation, and been stalled again since. I've read other threads about what others are eating, but being a "shortie" and having only about 15-20 lbs to goal I know I need to be more strict. That being said, I also know that if you're working out frequently, sometimes you stall because you're not eating enough! I'm 5'1 and weigh 130. Just wondering if any other low BMIers can share what their macro goals -- fat, protein, carbs -- are to help them keep losing weight. I know I need to track more religiously but my calories are usually around 800-900. I try to keep my net carbs below 40. Minimum protein 60, but usually aim for more. I know some will say increase my calories, but being a "smaller" individual I know my BMR is much lower than say a 6' man. Thanks for any input!

My inner thoughts, I don't share.

Being large sure has hampered my life some the past few years. I have not talked about it to anyone, but now I can relate and will share my thoughts. I was in the military and my last few years was trying as I had a vigorous exercise routine but was gaining weight. I was riding a bike for three hours a time, three times a week cross country. Anyway I finally retired and for the next few years I just laid back and relaxed and put on the #s. It took me 10 years to decide to change my life at 270 #s. The feelings I felt was loss of self esteem, did not want to go anywhere, had difficulty tying my shoes, and having to buy expensive tailored clothes. I rode a viking boat one year and when the bar was pulled close to my body, I could not breath, my circulation was cut off. After that I did not ride it again. As far as the airplane seats, I took a connecting flight once and had problems hooking the belt, yes I admit it. Now with my lapband in place i feel more confident, more energy, high self esteem, and feel great about dressing in nice fit clothing. Being a lapbander is FANTASTIC and I know the results will be achiebved. You will look great too, so just hang in there. I wish you much success.

1 ST Support Group with Hosp

The behavior counselor insisted that I go to this support group after surgery last night and on a monthly bases. I did not know what to expect but I didn't expect a infomercial. What I got from it was two people advertising their services. Spent a whole hour being told what a life coach does for you for $600 a month once a week over the phone(Chat line). If every month there's a new person with a service for sale then I won't go. It wasn't til the end that three people was asked to stand and tell how much weight they lost, for how long and explain what keeps them going.
