  1. I lost 68 pounds leading up to my surgery. 15 pounds of that during the pre-op diet, so 53 pounds before the pre-op diet. I don't feel like it affected my weight loss after surgery and the surgeon actually said it was better to lose as much weight as you can before your surgery because then you'll lose more overall, but I guess every surgeon has a different opinion on that... I've lost 143 pounds post-op (so 211 pounds in total) and am still losing. Slowly, but still losing. My slower then average loss is because of my hypothyroidism though. And inflammation from my arthritis. You'll probably be fine. And surgeons just give people a statistical average. Those averages include a mix of people who follow the diet religiously and those who somewhat follow the diet and those who basically eat whatever they want after they get back into the general diet because they don't care anymore (or the ones who drink their calories and then don't count those calories among what they ate for the day and wonder why they're not losing weight... hmm, I wonder... -_-"). Anyway, if you follow the plan and watch your intake then I don't see why you couldn't pass the statistical average and reach your goal.

    Insurance Through Postop

Month ten- 178.6. I’ve lost 160.4 lbs total. Soon I could weigh less than I’ve lost, which would be a cool milestone. This month I went on vacation which did get me off my more regimented eating plan. It was amazing to be able to hike all day and then swim with my kids in the evening and have energy and endurance for it all. I did get a beer at the breweries we visited, which was nice to be able to do. I still haven’t found any food that I can’t tolerate, although higher fat foods tend to sit like a brick in my stomach- not that it hurts, just a super heavy and full feeling that lasts for hours. This next month I would love to get down to 170. I’m within sight of my goal weight of 165, and I’m only a few pounds away from not being overweight. I know from past experience the 170s are a set point for me so I’m going to have to work hard if I want to get below this. Im starting to think that I might want to aim lower than 165, but that’s a problem for another month.
  3. What @catwoman7 said. I lost 11lbs during the pre-surgery two week liquid diet and nothing else before that. My first month was my biggest loss IN POUNDS by far. But my excess weight loss percentage rate kept increasing as time went on. Good Luck! ❤️ P.S. I just took a look at my records and i suppose the second month was also comparatively high to the remaining months...from month 3 onward though, it was basically 10-ish lbs a month until goal.

Read a book or two about bariatric surgery. I recommend Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies and How Weight Loss Surgery Really Works by Matthew Weiner, MD.

    Weight loss

Have you decided you want to have surgery? If so, are you planning to pay out of pocket or does your insurance cover it? Have you gone to your primary care doctor to get their recommendations? Have you researched the different types of procedures? Which procedures are offered will depend on the surgeon you see (the place I'm going only does sleeve and bypass). It is very hard to lose weight and if you have a lot to lose (like 100 lbs or more) the only way it's going to happen and that you'll keep it off (still not a sure bet) is through surgery. It's not "the easy way out;" it's still very hard. There are a lot of doctors visits and nutritionist, psychologists, etc before you can have surgery. I suggest checking out https://asmbs.org/ to start your research.

    July 2021 Surgery People!

This of it as a percentage of total weight. If you weight 200 and lose 30 pounds you lost 15% of your body weight. If you now weight 270 and lose 15%, that is 15 pounds. So if you lose at the same RATE, you are going to lose less weight, in this case, 25 pounds. So you lose at the same rate, but it is less pounds. That said, the initial weight is going to come off at a faster rate, so if you drop that rate, it is going to come off more slowly from a lower weight so it seems slower than it really is, if that makes any sense.
  7. I am new to the bariatric program and i have always had an issue to lose weight are there any suggestions how to proceed futher? Sent from my SM-G950U1 using BariatricPal mobile app
  8. I am 10 days post surgery and I can drink water without any restriction at all. I drink constantly and it is really helping with the weight loss. I am down over 12 pounds since the surgery day and that does not include the 6 pounds of fluids I took on while in the hospital, so 18 pounds since discharge. I consume 600-700 calories a day and about 90 ounces of water minimum. I walk for 45 minutes a day on most days, sometimes in 2 different sessions. I am now down over 34 pounds since starting the preop diet. Follow the instructions to a T and it will really kick in.
  9. I lost 57 lbs before surgery (I think about 15 of that was on the two-week pre-op diet, though - so 42 lbs before the pre-op diet). you'll likely lose on the low side the first month after surgery, since for most people, a lot of that huge drop the first month is water weight, and your water weight is long gone. Mine was, too. I lost 16 lbs the first month. after the first month, I don't think it makes a difference if you lost weight pre-surgery or not. surgeons usually quote you the average weight loss (60-70% of your excess weight), because statistically, that's where most people end up. But a statistic is a statistic - there are always people who are going to lose more or less than that. If you really work at it, you can do better than that. I almost never went off my plan and lost 100% of my excess weight.
  10. I used to get these leering comments and stares from men... when I was 12. Before I gained all my weight. I hope that after losing weight my short hair will be enough to keep them away. Is that wishful thinking? I don't think I can handle unwanted attention from men again.
  11. I have lost 50 lbs in the 7-8 months I've been preparing for surgery, although only a few pounds on the actual pre-op diet. I have read that this will make my weight loss slower or less after surgery. If you lost a lot (like about a third of what you want to lose) before surgery, did you lose slowly or less out of surgery? I have set my goal at 150, but ideally I'd like to get to a "normal" BMI below 140, but I'll see what feels good when I get there. My surgery center said I can expect to get to about 170-180, which is pretty depressing.

    Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

It's totally normal to have stalls and even bumps up a few pounds in any weight loss journey. Just follow your plan, drink your fluid, etc. Look at the trends over time, not just in one week or a few weeks.

    July 2021 Surgery People!

Hey all! Bit of advice, or just someone to confirm and ease my mind! So my overall target weight to loose was 5 and a half stone to get to my target weight. A healthy weight in the middle of my ideal BMI. 8 weeks post op I am roughly half way through reaching this target with a 2 and half stone lost. however I feel this is slowing down… I still can’t eat much so I’m not eating loads more or anything… I’m trying to keep my water intake up.. im crap at sticking to exercise plans - But trying to walk and move more in terms of housework etc. do you think it will continue again? Im having a doubting moment…. 😢☹️ Or do I need to sharpen up and get my self exercised …. I think I know the answers just probably need someone to tell me as well… em x

    Unsupportive Boyfriend

I'm sorry for resurecting older posts, but I really hope you lost more weight than your body did. Hope you lost him. He sounds so selfish. That comment about what will he get out of it just irks me. If my husband said that to me I'd divorce him.
  16. Hello forum, I'm a 50 year old Australian and proof that you can be both vegan AND morbidly obese 🙃. As I'm sure is a familiar refrain, I'm a life-long struggler with my weight. My last best effort to drop weight the analogue way (in 2019) was looking really successful - I'd gone from about 128kg down to 105kg and was SO CLOSE to two digits. I was loving fitness, and enjoying my new eating habits. Then the dreaded Panini hit us all in 2020, and the gym closed, and we locked down and I spent 2020 eating my feelings and regaining all the weight I'd lost. Again. Wit's end time, despair time, and so I decided to pursue my last hope. I did research on doctors and procedures, took out top hospital cover and dug in for the 12 month waiting period. Finally contacted my surgeon in August, and my surgery date is fast approaching. So it's almost chocks away. And I am champing at the bit for it. I cannot wait to get active and fit again.
  17. I'm 53 and am supposed to have my RNY in November. I have been through menopause. I got thrown into it when I had a TAH with OOPhorectomy. I had a uterine ablation and it didn't help me at all. I had some major issues though. My sister was the same way. It failed her too. I used to be able to lose weight...100 pounds at a time, but that was so long ago.

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

I had a hernia repair. This is good information to know wasn't sure why my back was hurting. Well I have few herniated discs from the extra weight but now 37 lbs down feel lil better. Especially my knees
  19. April 29th 2019 at 44 with lifelong chronic illness/disability, already had hysterectomy at 35, metabolic disorders, inability to exercise due to post exertional malaise from M.E. I was already utilizing tools of low carb low calorie yet my weight skyrocketed and I was just lost. Finally came the tool of Gastric Bypass (had to have my gallbladder removed at the same time) I was strict, eventually found it helpful to keep a daily log of weight, food, calories and protein. I reached goal by March 2020. As a lifelong tool it is very beneficial. I do not think age is a factor. Perhaps menopause can be in some ways for women but otherwise this is the Gold Standard ... never see it as a diet but a change for life and it will take you far.
  20. Ha ha ha, feel your power! Yeah, it’s disheartening because you are the same person. When I was younger and maintained a healthy weight I would try to channel my inner diva and let her deal with the unwanted attention. My best friend at the time used to stand in front of doors and blink until some man would fall over himself opening it for her. I literally pretended to be her to get through a grocery run. Don’t worry, you’ll become almost invisible again when you’re fully menopausal.

    Update On Me (Surgery: 5/19/21)

UPDATE: So today I got some blood work done that my gp requested. He had me do a CBC, Basic Metabolic, Triglyceride, LDL and A1C tests. Everything came came back good and/or improved but for a few......... LDL: On 3/11 it was - 151 Today, 9/9, it was - 135 Triglycerides: On 3/11 it was - 322 Today, 9/9, it was - 141 A1C: On 3/11 it was - 6.7 Today, 9/9, it was - 5.8 And my iron shows as low. Lower than in March and May when they checked it but I'll wait til I see him next week to talk about this. Otherwise I am soooooo close to having everything back in the NORMAL range!!! In November I'll have more blood work done for all the vitamins and stuff the surgeon is requesting. On other note, not sure why but for the last week or two I have stalled again. And in fact my weight has gone up 3 lbs from my lowest (my lowest was 253.4 on Aug 28th and has now been staying around 256/257). Not sure why. Nothing has been different but for me regularly walking on the treadmill (30 min a day, for two weeks now) and I have started to incorporate an upper body, full body and lower body routine (Mon, Wed, Fri) and the upper body part has me using weights (started this week). Otherwise, eating the same, bathroom has been the same, etc. I am due for my period in the next 8-12 days. So maybe that? I don't know.
  22. Don't rush through the psychological evaluation. You don't want to have to deal with binge eating or other food issues a few months after surgery and end up gaining all the weight back. If you want to find a different therapist, talk to your surgery center about your concerns, and ask for someone else, but don't lie. It's not in your best interest. You basically have one shot at this surgery and losing re-gain is not easy based on what I've read. Set yourself up for success.

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

I guess I should have said not everyone can expect to lose the same. At least that’s what the NP at my clinic said about me and their patients statistics on their pre op diet. (When I was Disappointed that I wasn’t losing more). Then again everyones pre op diet is a little different so I guess weight loss on it will vary as well. I know I didn’t lose nearly as much.

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

I would ask why this is? My diet is pretty much the same now as it was pre-surgery, I am ingesting less than 800 calories in a day. I am losing about the same amount of weight now as pre-surgery. Am I eating too little? I am 9 days out and have lost 10 pounds since surgery

WHERE ARE MY AUGUST 2021 PEEPS?

Oh no! I would be so upset if I were you! I guess just remember that the weight is coming off, just much more slowly than expected. On the bright side, perhaps you won’t experience the sagging skin that a rapid weight loss can cause?
