  1. I have Sunshine Health medicaid and I have had to have a few tests done that they require, and am still in the process. An endoscopy, a chest X-ray, EKG, sleep study, that nasty swallow test, a stress test, and I have to see a hematologist because I have a bleeding disorder in my family so they want to make sure that the blood thinner won't make me bleed to death and that I also won't get blood clots. They have to figure out exactly how much they can or can't give me when it's time. I've had quite a few surgeries already and have been fine, but this one you get blood thinners after it. I already have the history of dieting, pills and exercise. I'm 53 and have gone from 350 to 245-250 on my own over the years. I also have to see the nutritionist two or three times so I can learn how to eat properly. I don't think my surgeon requires the liquid diet, but I do have to be on a portion control diet with high protein. I can lose weight but I'm stuck at this weight so I need a bit of help. I have already changed my way of eating. No fast food, no fried food, way less sugar, but no sweet treats at all. I mostly eat the way I'm supposed to, but I have cheated a bit with a few sodas. After surgery I'm never going to drink them again. Nobody needs that stuff in their body anyway. My surgeon said if all of my testing is finished and ok that I can have my surgery in November. I've already done some of the tests and Monday I will get my appointments for the rest of them. I'm so excited to be getting the testing overwith and getting started on a new journey. I'm 5'3 I am 250 approximately. Highest weight was 350 Type 2 diabetic but A1C is 5.8 down from 7.2 High blood pressure High cholesterol (should be lowered by now) I used to have sleep apnea but had my tonsils and uvula removed (when I was 50..talk about the pain) I have figured out that one of my new exercises is going to be hunting for pokemons or whatever they are called..lol I just started playing that darn game and now I'm addicted. I'll be going to the gym too of course.:)

    Others noticing weight loss

Congratulations. That first time someone notices is so wonderful & so motivating too. My first time (apart from my mother) was a friend who’d known me big & small. I hadn’t seen her for a couple of months & she didn’t know about the surgery. I was wearing a slim fitting dress that was looser - when I used to wear it it would pull across my butt & I’d wear a jacket. I’d lost about 15 kg (10 post surgery) & it was early month 2. I loved how she hugged me in greeting (remember how we used to do that all the time - sigh!) & whispered in my ear I was looking great, then looked into my eyes & nodded her head. I knew she understood the battle weight loss had always been for me & was honestly happy for me & being really supportive. So much more meaningful then the loud ‘have you lost weight’ comments I got later & then the ‘you’ve lost too much’ ones.

    Revision

weight loss is never as fast with a revision as it is with a "virgin" surgery. I think 22 lbs in seven weeks is pretty good, actually. you say you're watching carbs - are you watching overall calories as well? When I'm trying to lose, I weigh and measure everything - or most things, anyway. I also track my intake - although I've done that every day since my surgery 6+ years ago, regardless of whether or not I'm trying to lose. if you're already doing everything you're supposed to be doing, then it's probably just a long stall. I don't know if they're more frequent or longer for revisions - but I know mine became longer and more frequent when I got close to my goal.

    Post VSG Hair Loss

Hair loss is an recognised side effect but it is true that not every one experiences it. Those that do start & finish at different times & lose different amounts. That’s due to our own physiology but there are average times frames like it starts around month 3 or 4. You’re almost 3 months so pretty close to the average. Your body reacts to the stress of the surgery, change of diet, reduced caloric intake & general emotional changes you’re experiencing by accelerating your natural hair loss cycle. So the hair you’re losing would have fallen out at some time but it’s just happening faster & sooner. The good news is that it does stop & your new hair is still growing (you just don’t notice the new growth until it has some length to it - look for fluffy bits). I lost a fair amount but I had heaps to begin & as @catwoman7 said often no one else really notices it (only my mother & hairdresser did). Best thing I did was cut my length to just above my shoulders. My hair was bouncier because I didn’t have the length pulling it down & the new growth reached this shorter length sooner. I didn’t take any additional supplements or vitamins or use treatment shampoos, etc. & my hair stopped shedding at around 3-4 months which seems to be the average time frame the excess hair loss persists. I know our hair can be an important part of how we present to the world & the loss can be scary & worrying but that only adds to the stress we’re already experiencing which is contributing to our hair shedding. I decided to look at it as a short term annoyance I had to go through. I felt the whole weight loss period was me transitioning & transforming (mutating???) into a better me.

    HIIT??

Workout Regimen?? Hey all! I am 3 months post op (35F, HW: 280, SW: 250, CW:210) and have been consistently walking, doing yoga, and some strength training for over 2 months. I would like to incorporate more strength-based workouts so tried a HIIT class yesterday which I really enjoyed (super sore today 🤣). I keep reading that doing heavy cardio can stall weight loss so I am hesitant to go frequently even though I am more interested in the strength days. Anyone have a similar experience? Did intensifying your workouts slow your progress at all?
  6. It is unusual, and I would question how successful it would be for additional weight loss purposes for the same reason that I am skeptical about revisions in the other direction - VSG to RNY for weight loss. Metabolically, they are too similar to provide a major difference over the long term; short term one can expect some loss, typically 20 lb +/- some from the restrictive dieting required around surgery time (though a few outliers do report good results.) More common are RNY revisions to either tighten the stoma or resize the pouch, either directly or via a lapband, None of those procedures have a great record, either. The best results that I have seen with any consistency is to revise to a DS (duodenal switch) but that is a very complex surgery that few surgeons are qualified to do (though doing the DS from a VSG is quite straightforward for a qualified DS surgeon.)
  7. Hello everyone, So I'm getting nervous now! I have Ahcccs w/ AZ Complete Health Plan) & I have been doing all the requirements from my Bariatric Surgeon. 6 months supervised diet w/ chart all chart notes & visit summary (lost 6 lbs, never gained), endoscopy, cardiac clearance (pet scan, echo & EKG), pulmonary clearance (chest x-ray), sleep study, psych eval & clearance, nutritionist, & letter of recommendation from Primary Care doc. I made sure to get copies of everything & sent them to my surgery coordinator in the doctor's portal. FINALLY FINISHED! My surgeon's office is submitting everything next week & I'm nervous! I'm worried if I will be approved or not. Has anyone been in same situation? I am hoping to get VGS. 5'3" 229.5 (1st weigh in) 225lb. (current weight) obstructive sleep apnea hypothyroidism high cholesterol type 2 diabetic ( I was type 2 diabetic, but last blood test reads lower levels to pre-diabetic. I am still on Metformin)

    Chickpea "Pasta"

Chick peas are pretty high in carbs. I shy away from carbs because I want to stay in ketosis. I think that has been the guy to my weight loss so far. Low carb, low fat, high protein
  9. I’ve had a few folks stare and eventually say “I didn’t recognize you”, without them specifically mentioning anything about weight loss. Weird…..
  10. Checking in. Sleeve to RNY revision here. This past week, my weight has been the same. Up until then, I was dropping 2 to 3 lbs. a week. Being a previous sleeve patient, I am familiar with the dreaded stalls and hope it snaps soon. I am staying on plan, regardless, to let my body figure out what is going on. lol As per my surgeon, I am still eating 5-6 small meals, about 600-700 calories which includes the calories of my supplements. I keep reading the forums to stay motivated and connected. Hope all is well with all of you.

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

Hi guys!! I’m Tamika 37 living in DMV area. I am having the gastric sleeve surgery. I’ve also struggled majority of my life with weight and have lost some over the years but every regain seems to double the loss. I have had thoughts of doing this surgery for a while but honestly shied away because the lap band was mostly the only option at the time but I didn’t want to take the risk. Once I learned of the sleeve I started researching it and finally taking The steps to start the process. I have been working really hard to live a healthier lifestyle but progress always seems little to none so I’m hopeful this tool will help me to finally achieve my goals.
  12. My surgery is scheduled for Monday - I can’t believe in 48 hours it’s finally time!! I’ve been on the pre-op diet for two weeks tomorrow and I’m down 12lbs. I started at 242 and am now 230. I’m feeling ALL THE FEELINGS… excited, scared, like I’ve failed, like there is hope, like it won’t work for me, like it will work and I’ll finally achieve a normal weight. I’m all over the place! Did anyone else go through this?!

    I need some help.

You asked so...here's some detail, lol. Below I've included screenshots of what I ate for 7 consecutive days at my 4 month post op mark. I realize that the calorie counts are quite low compared to what some others may have been eating at the same time, but it was totally normal for me as I just wasn't a big eater for a really long time after surgery. I wasn't suffering as far as I can remember, and was generally in a good mood all the time. I had had probably 3 labs done by this time and all came back satisfactorily. In fact, all my other labs since then to today have all come back satisfactorily. For reference, I started out at BMI 43 (235 lbs) at the beginning of the 2 week pre-surgery liquid diet, and was BMI 29.6 (160.9 lbs) at this 4 month mark. I'm a 5'2" female, and was 46 yrs old at 4 months post op. I was exercising pretty regularly at this time, mostly fun classes 2-3 times a week (dance, zumba, hot yoga) and walking for about 5K a every day. I did some strength training, but not much. I drank water like it was going out of style. I didn't really have set meals (still don't, really). Just sorta grazed all day. I didn't eat before noon, nor after 7pm (again, something i still mostly do at almost 3 years post op today, though I am less of a stickler about not eating after 7pm, as my nighttime gas issues are much better now). I dunno why I always feel hesitant to say this, but: I did not stall once. But I mean, I realize I was eating VERY FEW calories so how could I not lose, right? There was one week in month 3 where I lost less than a 1/2 a lb, I remember, but its still a loss so...yeah. P.S. Today, I'll be 3 years post in October, have been maintaining my current weight (+/- 5 lbs) for over 2 years, and probably consume an average of 1800-1900 cals a day. I am still pretty active. At my peak activity levels I was eating like 2000+ cals a day regularly. Anyhoo, here is a consecutive week's worth of food diary entry screen shots at my 4 month mark:

    Others noticing weight loss

CONGRATS!!!!!!!!!! Sounds familiar (the part about not being noticed after having lost so much). I have lost 75 since March and 57 since surgery in May and not many people have said anything about my weight loss. Mostly my husband and grandkids who see and feel it through hugs and whatnot. But others, not so much. I mean I have had a few friends/neighbors say something but at the same time, I don't think or feel like I lost much at all. And what's even stranger, a friend told me her weight without knowing mine, and here she's like 10 lbs heavier than I am which I find insane. I just don't see it. I see myself as WAAAAY bigger than her and find that hard to believe. I've also been walking around in my old clothes so that may contribute to no one noticing as well. LOL

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

I am 46, live in WI. I also originally had the lapband and actually lost a lot of weight. I was down to 135 at one point. I had to have it removed almost 3 years ago due to complications and have almost gained all of my weight back. I will say, having it removed felt really great after having it for over 10 years.
  16. First, yay on the successful weight loss so far!! Second, it took about 60 lbs and a tucked in shirt for people outside my immediate family and BFF circles to notice (or at least make a comment about it…they may have noticed, but didn’t say anything until the -60lb mark….and tucking in my shirt 🤷🏻‍♀️). For reference, I was 235 at the beginning of the 2 week pre surgery liquid diet. Warning: once others start talking about it, it not going to stop for a while…in my experience it seriously dominated almost every conversation…honestly got quite annoying. Im almost 3 years out now and me and my weight loss is old news. Which is a good thing!!

    Any October 2021 Surgeries?

So excited for you guys! I would love to hear more about you and your journey. I am 49, live in Austin and have struggled with weight my whole life. My surgery is actually a revision from the lap band to gastric bypass. I've spent the last three months researching like crazy and feel really great about this life changing decision! Sent from my SM-G981U using BariatricPal mobile app
  18. I am 13 weeks post op and have lost 68 pounds so far (started at 280). Yesterday was the FIRST day that anyone noticed (or actually said anything.) And in the past 24 hours it seems as though everyone is suddenly noticing the weight loss. Just curious as to others’ experiences with how much weight was lost before people began noticing and commenting. And wondering why with that last 2 pounds is it suddenly so much more evident to people????

    I need some help.

Stalls are so frustrating but you really just have to let your body take the time it needs & your weight loss will start again. I never changed what I was doing, stuck to my plan, & the stalls always broke. Constipation is a constant companion for many of us. Are you adding a soluble fibre to your diet? I used to take a stool softener if I got to day 3 without any movement. This stopped me getting to bound up & then having painful movements. Are you still meeting your daily fluid goal? Do you track your calories & measure & weigh your food? Were you given caloric goals as well as protein? if you are just guessing or eyeballing it, it can be easy to over estimate. Not everyone is given caloric goals. I wasn’t but I was given advice on portion size progression. At four months I was eating about 1/2 - 3/4 cup of food. I did random checks of calories & was around 700 at that time. Many eat much more than I did. I prepped & cooked almost everything I ate myself so I had control over the ingredients & how things were cooked. Breakfast was scrambled eggs (cooked two eggs & took 2-3 days to eat) or rolled oats (3 days to eat a single serve). Lunch was meat (chicken tenders, white flesh fish, smoked salmon, pork sausage, dinner leftovers, etc.) Often that was all I ate - just the protein. Sometimes I’d have a little cucumber or green vegetables. Dinner was basically meat (pork, lamb, chicken, beef, fish) with vegetables (combinations of green beans, cauliflower, asparagus, sugar snap peas, cabbage or broccolini). Sometimes I made soup with meat, vegetable beans or lentils. I made rissoles (meatballs) a lot - easy to portion, freeze & reheat - & zucchini noodles bolognese. I portioned & froze a lot of what I cooked. Made it easy those frequent nights I wasn’t very interested in food - just defrost, reheat & only prep vegetables if needed. Easy & quick. I ate two snacks: a high protein yoghurt or yoghurt drink & either cheese or fruit. Good luck.

    I need some help.

I'm 4 months out too and hit stalls a few times. In the beginning I believe it was due to not enough protein an possibly not enough calories. But once I corrected that and made an effort to increase both, my weight started moving again. However, I hit my lowest weight of 253.4 lbs on Aug 28th and since then I have stalled and not lost anything more. In fact I have been seeing 255, 256, 257 on the scale since then. Nothing has changed diet wise so I'm not sure why (but I'm also due my period in 8-12 days so maybe that's why?). But like others say, it's normal to stall along the way. Anywho, my normal diet usually consists of...... Breakfast: 1 egg scrambled with some shredded cheddar cheese. Sometimes with some salsa, spicy guacamole, or mushrooms and/or onions, etc. I also usually have 1 or two turkey sausage patties but not always. Once in a while I will even make a sausage, egg and cheese on a whole wheat English Muffin but can ever only eat about half or a little more that half. Lunch: A scoop of tuna (made with light mayo) with 6 whole wheat Saltines and a few cubes of cheese. Or sometimes a sandwich (on Aldi Keto Bread: zero net carbs and 50 cal) with turkey lunchmeat and cheese (again, I can never eat a whole sandwich). Or sometimes just the meat and cheese by itself. Dinner: Usually chicken (baked in some way or another) and I always try and add a scoop of veggies but once I eat my protein I'm usually not able to fit the veggies. I also try and add brown rice once in a while or black/kidney/northern/etc. beans but usually never eat more than a few forks full. Other proteins I eat for dinner are salmon, shrimp, tilapia, flounder, etc. I also use the various tortilla's from https://mrtortilla.com/ and make all sorts of tacos or quesadillas. Each tortilla is 1 carb and 15 calories!! We LOVE them!! Oh and I also make chicken wings with various seasonings in my air fryer. Homemade chicken nuggets too. I don't usually snack during the day or evening but once in a while I will have an extra thing during the day like some light Greek yogurt, or cottage cheese alone or with something like cut up cantaloupe. I do TRY and have fruit most days too, like an apple or Halo, etc.

    Pain levels

There’s pain & there’s pain. Our tolerance to it is different & we heal & recover differently. Around day 4 +/- you shouldn’t need the extra strong pain meds & over the counter ones will suffice (remember not NSAIDS). Often the gas pain is what lingers or the pain from your abdominal muscles being stretched & strained from the surgery) . Some people swear by binders others don’t use or need them. I was one who didn’t use or need one but I was also able to sleep on my side & tummy pretty much from day one. I do think that if you do struggle with mobility & movement (especially getting up & down) or carried a lot of your weight in your tummy region (we all carry out weight in different places:) you may find one helpful.

    July 2021 Surgery People!

I think it sounds like you are doing great! 🤩 You are already halfway to your goal and you just had your surgery in July!!!🤯😱🥳 From what I read, the average WLS patient loses half their excess weight around the 6 month mark. That is typically when weight loss might start slowing down (but people typically lose for about a year to 18 months post-op) . Just keep doing what your doing. Keep your water, protein, & food in check. Start tracking again, if you stopped. Adding exercise in, as you said, sounds like it would be a way to help tone up and maybe help boost the weight loss. Maybe just start with increasing the length or speed of your walks or add weights, at first. We are still pretty close to the surgery, so start things gradually. I am not very good about exercise either. I walk, but I need to start doing more. Let me know if you find anything you like! I like to swim, but it is so much money to join a pool. I am looking into the vibration plates, as they are supposed to help with weightloss, toning, aches & pains, lymphatic system, & cellulite. Congratulations on your weight loss results. You are doing so well. I'm sure you will keep losing. Don't forget, there will be stalls along the way. 😊

    I need some help.

Hi everyone. I am about to hit my 4 month and I am at a major stall, plus I gained some weight and I am not using the restroom how I was the first 2 months after. I am stuck on 30 well now back to 24lbs. I wanted to ask what is you all eating plan that ya'll go by on a day to day. I'm talking very informative like Breakfast, Snack, Lunch, Snack, Dinner the reason why I am asking because I meal prep week to week. I really want feedback from those who have had success through the VSG and those who broke their stales. I can't wait to read all your replies.

Any Nov 2020 VSG surgery Siblings out there!? can you share your story, loss , gain & macros, work out regimen. Thanks!
  25. Hi @timmytommy, I’m 53 , post-menopause, and lost 72 lbs pre-op which was 11 months. Weirdly no weight loss at all during the liquid phase before surgery, no idea why. As soon as I had surgery (RNY) the weight has peeled off. Just 13lbs the first month but I’m elated! I can move so much easier. I compare it to WW when .5 a week was a victory. I know I loose slowly, but I feel like all the tracking, measuring, and exercise NOW makes a difference.
