    1 Week Down!

That's great news!! I was sleeved dec 9 and struggling a bit. No medical complications- thank god! Just some mental ones. I have not lost any weight at all. Literally!! In fact I'm still a few pounds heavier than my surgery date weight! How is that even possible? I've been on Nothing but the clear and full liquid phase. ( pudding, yogurt and soups) I don't know how I'm going to stay on this phase until dec 23 when I'm supposed to start soft/puréed foods. I'm just a bit frustrated. I have lost more weight on my own before the surgery while eating more than I've lost this last week eating nothing. I feel hungry which I've read is the acid so I'm getting back to taking my Nexium. I get about 50 grams of Protein a day and about 50 oz of Water. I know I need to up both but it's been so hard to get the Protein powder down. I need to go buy some ready made shakes tomorrow.

    Puréed phase?

My list of puree/soft foods is similar to some things listed above but included toast, my NUT appointment is tomorrow so I want to ask about that. Any soft, non skinned vegetables that can be mashed up, fruit in juice already (preferably sugar free), sugar free pudding, greek yogurt, tuna, chicken salad, egg (egg salad), continue Protein shakes, refried Beans etc. Thanksgivings looking like mashed sweet potatoes for me! The PA at the surgeon said please please dont try turkey even with gravy it is really dry and with my hernia repair as well she can almost promise me it would be a bad idea unless I want to blend it. Which I can not handle the texture of food pureed (not even creamy soups) needless to say the past two weeks with just Clear liquids have been straight broth and water/crystal light.

    Salad Dressings & Low Carbing

You can try dressings that are yogurt or buttermilk based, rather than oil or mayo based - they are still low in carbohydrates but also naturally moderate in fats to keep the calories in check. They are typically around 2g of carbs and 3-4 on fats, yielding 50ish calories for a couple tablespoon serving. A lot more comfortable than 150 cal servings typical of full fat dressings. Bolthouse Farms has a line of yogurt based dressings in the refrigerator case, and Trader Joes has a few refrigerated dressings that fit in the moderate category, too. I'm carb and fat agnostic, so don't really care about those counts, but do want to get the most nutrition for my caloric buck - I'd rather spend my fat calories on the avocado in the salad than on just a bunch of oil.

    Screw you scale!!

I get my 60 grams of protein, but a huge part of my diet is carbs. Beans, Pumpernickel, Sourdough, lentils, protein pasta (made of lentils and chickpeas), protein wraps, whole wheat English muffins, oatmeal, sweet potatoes, white potatoes...mashed, baked, etc. (when I do mashed, I do half potatoes, half cauliflower, with fat free buttermilk) And fruits are all carbs, and I eat about four servings a day. Tons of veggies, too. I eat very little meat. One protein shake in my coffee over the course of the day=30g protein. One greek yogurt each day=10g protein. The other 20g I get from low glycemic carb protein (a whole wheat English muffin has 6g of protein), tofu, mushrooms, beans, nuts, seeds, etc. And a couple times a week, I eat some meat, too. I get my 60g of protein every day. Sometimes 80g. Losing 1-2 pounds a week pretty steadily. Loving it:) This week was a bonus week...3 pounds:) (last week I was stuck due to my period, so 3 pounds was welcome) I'm eating 6 little meals a day, am never hungry. The idea that this is forever...is ok with me. I like how this fits in my life.

    Puréed phase?

Nut butter, yogurt, soft boiled eggs, applesauce. I purred peaches because I don't care for applesauce, creamy soups, hummus.

    Puréed phase?

Yesterday was my first day. I had an egg for breakfast and some Greek yogurt at lunch then a teaspoon of peanut butter for a snack later but the peanut butter made me feel a little sick too. I would love to hear some ideas on this phase too. I'm anxious to eat but a little nervous.
  8. The goal of this surgery is not to feel full to the max. It's to relearn how to eat until you are sated, not overstuffed and full. I would look at the dosage & time of day you are taking the prilosec. It may need to be adjusted. When I was first sleeved I was taking my omeprazole (generic prilosec) in the morning since I didn't have any issues with acid. Once I transitioned to soft foods I noticed I would feel full in the early evenings. Occasionally I would get this stuck feeling in my chest. Reading up I realized I needed to take my PPI around 2 -3 ish and eventually I upped the dosage from 20 mgs to 40. That made all the difference in the world. I could eat what I was supposed to and I no longer had that weird full feeling. As for eating and drinking you need to do whatever it is to get in ALL your Protein. Early on I find that a combo of eating and drinking Proteins helps. I started each day with a Protein shake that I would make with FAGE 0% greek yogurt, Protein powder and Water served over ice. This was helpful to get a big does of protein and fluids at the beginning of the day. My shakes came in at 12 - 14 ounce and 31 -38 gms of protein. The rest of the day I could coast. Eat what foods I could tolerate and sip on water. Eventually I was able to work my way up to getting my 64 ounces of fluids and 100gms or more of protein.

I cannot believe this initial loss

Please feel free to comment or suggest. I'm using this primarily as my record... I started my preop diet 1/5/10, had surgery 1/14, and today is 1/18/10 (Happy Bday, Dr. King). I've lost 16.6 lbs. I guess it's not that amazing when compared to the other losses I see, but for me, it's amazing! I know that the last 20 lbs I put on really seemed to put me over the edge in terms of my health. I discovered that I have severe sleep apnea, had acute GERD (reflux) and other problems. I remember the joy over learning I had sleep apnea, because it meant there was actually a reason and a solution to my constant fatigue. I thought it was just fat. I am sick of the liquid diet, though, and actually concerned that I'm not getting enough calories. I've heard that your metabolism just slows to a crawl if your body thinks food is scarce, but it is hard to increase my calorie count and follow instructions, so I am favoring the latter. My protein drinks (Isopure and Pure Protein) only have about 150 calories for 40 grams of protein, and I am supposed to consume them in small 1-2 oz amounts every 15-30 mins. It's easy to forget. And I am still full of burp bubbles. Ugh. So I am on protein, yogurt, broth, water, s/f jello or pudding, and low-fat creamed soups. It was hard to walk today because we had a powerful rainstorm. No more significant pain, so I'm off the narcotics. Incisions are itchy! I have been very careful about not lifting and not using my abdominal muscles (I'm sure they're buried under there somewhere). I wonder how long that will last. It's a lonnnnnnnng way to food. Sigh. It's only Monday, and I have two weeks. If the loss continues in the way that it has I will be thrilled. There was a "Biggest Loser" marathon on the other day so I watched. Their weight loss is incredible and the show is a good reminder of how much physical activity is an integral part of this process. I don't want to lose momentum. I tried some Muscle Milk light and loved it, so of course when I Googled it there's a controversy about using it. It seems there's andro...something steroid-ish in it. Bummer. It reminded me of the carob drinks I had as a kid (that I can never find now). Well, that's it for now.
  10. Full liquids for two weeks, puréed three weeks, soft foods three weeks. Full liquids included cram soup, malt o meal and Greek yogurt. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  11. I am 16 days post op and in the soft foods/ puréed stage. I am a teacher and going back to work on Tuesday. Kids return on Wednesday. I have 4 classes back to back before a break. What can I take that will keep my energy up but that's easy to eat without interfering with my classes. Btw, I teach 7/8 grade Spanish and always talking! I do have a refrigerator in my classroom and thinking of bringing yogurt but that doesn't hold me for long before my energy drops. Help!
  12. Okay had a Greek yogurt this morning and went down well except tries to et last bite in too early and it hurt. As for my lunch which I am working on still it's protein shake it somewhat hurts going down like I feel a little pain in my tummy and burping a little is that normal?

    Checking in

Hi all. I had my surgery on October 11th at Shawnee Mission Medical Center in Kansas City under the care of Stan Hoehn. Day of surgery: Surgery at 10:30 am. I woke up in a lot of pain in my abdomen. The original recovery room pain meds didn’t help. The next meds they tried caused an allergic reaction - rash, trouble breathing, inability to focus, nausea. It took hours to convince the nurse that the Dilaudid was a problem. In retrospect, as I am allergic to morphine, I can’t believe they gave me a morphine derivative and then denied I was having a reaction, but that is having a bad nurse vs. a good nurse, I suppose. For the record, all of my other nurses and CAs were the best and truly a great group of healthcare professionals. The Demerol that they finally put me on (about 7:30 pm) gave me a bit of itching around my eyes and nose, but was far more tolerable. I was able to suck on ice chips, take a walk around the unit, and sleep pretty comfortably. Day 1 Post-op: Felt great, was doing great with all tests and measurements. Able to start Clear liquids. Every bite felt like I was filling my stomach with air – uncomfortable but not painful. Started taking Lortab Elixir. It tastes terrible, but it was nice to get away from the powerful drugs. Went home moving well and optimistic. Took my everyday meds (Wellbutrin,Kariva, and Zantac) and went to bed around 10 pm. Woke around 12:30 am feeling crazy nauseous and vomited repeatedly – very painful. Woke again at 3:30 am for another round. I was in so much pain and so nauseous that I could not get the Loratab down. Day 2 Post-op: Spent entire day in bed. It was almost too painful to get up to use the restroom. Too scared to take Loratab in case itmade me vomit again. Too nauseous to eat or drink, though I forced myself toget in 25 oz of Water before bed. A frightening, dismal day. Realized that I was not supposed to begin taking the Kariva or Zantac right away, so that was probably the cause. Day 3 Post-op: Called the doctor because I was so sick thatI was barely able to get anything down, including water. They prescribed an anti-nausea medication that dissolves on your tongue – took one and haven’t been sick to my stomach since! Still sore from vomiting, but feeling 100% better after getting the script filled and taken. Easily get my water and Protein minimums met. Took a 15 minute walk around the neighborhood and then took a nap. Day 4-6 Post-op: Energy is great and pain management is easy with liquid ibuprofen or Tylenol. Having soreness in my back, but probably due to too much sitting around. Was able to do household shopping and light cleaning around the house. Able to bend easily to scoop litter boxes, vacuum, and any other task that doesn’t require heavy lifting or pulling. Eating hasbeen an adventure. Protein shakes and liquids in general are no trouble. More solid things are hit and miss – pureed shrimp was okay, but salmon caused sliming. And sliming is no fun, but not painful, thank goodness. String cheese was fine once but not tonight. Hummus, eggs, avocado/yogurt Soup, and refried Beans have been no trouble. I find I am able to take one biteof just about anything and I am fine as long as I chew, chew, chew. And, ofcourse, I’m not trying anything outside of my nutritional guidelines. On the downside, I can’t tell when I am full, so I have been tying to keep all portions at about ¼ cup, as that seems to work without making me slime. Starting tomorrow, I need to really up my protein and water intake, so that might be a challenge as I feel like I have something in my mouth all the time already. LOL Hunger is mostly gone, but head hunger is alive and well. Dr. Hoehn prescribes a self-injected medicine called arixtra to help prevent blood clots. We must inject ourselves once a day for seven days following surgery. I was dreading this and was pleased to find that it is so easy and painless. Swab some tummy fat with an alcohol prep pad, pinch, and jab. The needle is so fine that I haven't felt it even a little. Believe me, super, duper easy. I see my doctor tomorrow to have the staples removed. I’m hoping to be cleared for a bath as I dearly love soaking in the tub. I've been showering, of course. I just miss my bathtub. Otherwise, I feel very much on track. I’m using myfitnesspal.com to keep track of every bite and that is so helpful. I am “hswelch” there if anyone would like to find me there.
  14. :blush:Hello Everyone! I finall got the lap band on the 7th of July, 2008. I lost 15 pounds on my own by the day of surgery. Started at 323 and on the day of surgery, I was at 308. :thumbup:Ok....so I'm feeling great and by that Friday after surgery, I was up and about doing my Holy Ghost Ho-down in my garage (light workout). So then I find out that the banding was only placed on my stomach, but not tightened? Why did my hair stylist tell me that???? So it makes sense and explained why I was actually feeling hunger pangs. Ok...today is the 24th and I made it to my first fill. That prick was pretty painful....oooouch! Survived it though. Ok...so why was I able to eat an entire Southwest salad from McDonalds and a few fries???? Of course the entire day, all I had was 2 yogurts. One at breakfast and one at lunch. What is up with that? I paid out of pocket 15k for this surgery like many of you "Against All Odds" and plenty of you can do it on your own. So this can't be normal. I was getting discouraged because when I got on the scale today, I weighed 302. The doctor's office weighed me in from my first appt at 320. I have Scott & White insurance so when I went for my blood work, they weighed me in at 323. So of course, I went w/that weight. So in all reality, all I've lost after surgery without the band being tightened is 6 pounds in 17 days with lots of walking:whatchutalkingabout? Seems like I should have really lost more than that? Of course my doctor did tell me that I probably won't feel the affects of the fill til 1 or 2 days out. I sure hope so. Anyone else experience this phenomenon???? Pleazzze...for the sake of 15,000.00, please enlighten me!!!!:smile2:
  15. I would love to hear from anyone who had their Bariatric surgery done at Mayo. Curious what their post op diet recommendations are. The link above is great but not specific to WLS patients. This is all I could find online with a quick search— https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/gastric-bypass-surgery/in-depth/gastric-bypass-diet/art-20048472 And it says— “Focus on high-protein foods. Immediately after your surgery, eating high-protein foods can help you heal. High-protein, low-fat choices remain a good long-term diet option after your surgery, as well. Try adding lean cuts of beef, chicken, pork, fish or beans to your diet. Low-fat cheese, cottage cheese and yogurts also are good protein sources.” But no specific or long term recommendations. Also will be great when there are long term studies that show the results of different diet plans and choices.

    October 16 sleevers

I'm feeling good! I can do the stairs to and from my apartment pretty comfortably now. I'm living off of water, crystal light, protein shakes (which I'm getting really sick of), and greek yogurt. Tonight, I'm having cream of tomato soup! My mothing in law made it for me and she said she took special care blending it to make sure there are no chunks.
  17. On the go ideas people have recommended to me are string cheese, handful of nuts, dried fruits, single serving yogurts, cottage cheese, and apple sauces. Also heard people eating beef jerky but that seem like it would hurt my stomach. I haven't gone back to work yet so I'm worried about on the go eating also.

Where are you at??? October 2010 Bandsters

Fluffy - i'm so sorry you lost your grandma, I'm sure that had a lot to do with where your at now. Greif is a big player. I hope things turn around for you soon. To answer your questions; How are you doing with weight loss? Great.. I've been sucessfully looking weight each week. 32.8 Total; made it through thanksgiving happily to say. How are you emotionally? hit or miss... I think that somedays are good, and somedays are very not good.... More personal refletion; than diet related. Are you exercising? Yes, treadmill and eliptical. BUT.... again hit or miss... Usually about 3 times a week, sometimes if I'm really doing good 6, but thats been about 3 of the last 7 weeks. What is your daily routine? Eating: B-Protein shake, S - yogurt, L-protein/starch, S-cheese stick or protein, D-protein/vegi then after work I work out first thing when I get home if I dont', then i don't want to What has been the easiest thing so far? Suprisingly.. The eating... I've been really good at portion's (for the most part) - I have over eaten a couple times, but learned my lesson. No Vomiting or PBing, thank good. What has been the most difficult? lack of support from my husband..... Only with time..... All will adapt....
  19. Have your team ruled out a stricture ? Any time that liquids are being vomited back up, alarm bells should ring. It is a easy fix I believe. Lots of us have issues with nausea and not wanting to eat foods and drinks that were our go to ones before surgery. I didn't do Protein drinks but have read on here that there are ones with sugar substitutes that really give people problems. My husband is diabetic so we have lots of sugar substitutes and every one of them make me vomit. I use real sugars if I need any. Lots of us find we are intolerant of dairy, nuts etc. Our new stomachs are really fussy. I also had a filthy taste in my mouth from the ketones for months. I still take Lansoprazole 30mg twice a day and when I need it Gaviscon I could not face the puree stage, just thinking about the texture made me heave so I missed that stage all together and stayed on homemade soups, yogurts, cream cheese, pate until I could go on to foods that were squashed with a fork. One tip that I was given was to have my drinks warm. My stomach accepted them better. I never drink plain water, I have never liked it. I add a little fruit juice or add Bovril or Oxo stock cubes.

    Spicy Food + No Water?

Water actually increases the burn with spicy food. The real solution is milk or dairy. Depending on what you're eating that's spicy, maybe you could counter the spice with sour cream or yogurt?
  21. I have a pretty standard schedule during the work week and it’s more variable during the weekend. I start the day with a low carb protein shake. About 2 hours later I have a fruit or dairy serving. Siggis yogurt or some berries. Or I may have a veggie juice. For lunch and an afternoon snack I will split a turkey burger in half and have for both meals or have chicken or turkey salad When I get home which is usually pretty late I have peanut butter and sugar free strawberry preserves on a small chestnut flatbread I also use my slow cooker and make a lot of stews that have meat and beans.

    Bougie Size?

My new tummy was sized over a 40 bougie, It really depends on the surgeons technique. As for four cups, it depend on 4 cups of what. You will never be able to eat 4 cups of solid Protein, such as beef, pork, chicken, or fish. But you probably will be able to eat 4 cups of popcorn. I'm almost a year out. For Breakfast, I had 1 cup of greek yogurt, mixed with 1/3 cup berries and on the side I had oatmeal (1/4 cup oatmeal cooked in 1/2 cup water). I was full and it took be about 30 minutes to eat. For lunch I had chicken salad (3 oz. chicken breast, 1/3 small apple, 2 T. dried cranberries, 1 tsp. walnuts, 2 T. lite mayo and a small handful of spinach) with about 10 whole grain wheat thin crackers. For a snack this afternoon I had 1 oz. of pretzels. For dinner I plan to have 3 oz. of shrimp with 1/4 cup cocktail sauce and another handful of spinach. For a late night snack, I will have a couple of cups of popcorn and a small orange. Lynda

90 Days Out - Menu Ideas?

I was buying Oikos Triple Zero and then I foubd that Dannon Light and Fit Greek yogurt is even better for us and tastes lovely. Give it a try! Also, Ive always been a meat eater but since meats arent doing too well in my pouch, i tried Morningstar Spicy Black Bean burger in the freezer section. Dee-lish! Ill be trying more Morningstar products. Simple ingredients, great tastes!
  24. Fat free Greek yogurt is more sour than the 2% fat. For breakfast I have fruited Greek yogurt with 1/2 scoop whey isolate protein powder, tsp unflavored benefiber, and a couple packets of Splendra, and about 1/4 cup high protein Kashi Go Lean Cereal. I say it's about 28 g of protein.

Not the ideal sleeve stomach "shape"

Hey Always Smiling! How's it going? I went back to work yesterday and only made it to 1:30. So freaking tired. Today I went back and left on purpose at 1:30. Still really tired and hoping I do better next week. Thank goodness my employer is very understanding!! I also tried the next stage of foods. Omg!! Cottage cheese is gross!!! Lmao!! So I'll stick with the Greek yogurt, not much better! Good luck to all!!! Best, Crash2015
