Staying steadfast thru struggle
Miss Mac replied to dhrguru's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The brand I picked up was Core Fitness, which I have not tried before. It came yesterday afternoon, so I made one up. Very good...it won't go to waste. I also made up a blend of ricotta and Greek Vanilla yogurt, canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) and some pumpkin spice and sweetener. I scooped it out into a muffin pan and froze it, then froze the single serving pumpkin cups for individual use as I need them. There was a bit left clinging to the blender so I added a cup of milk, and a scoop of the pumpkin spice Protein for a 40 gram Protein shake that will take me two sessions to drink. -
2 week appointment went well... cleared for exercise without lift and egg/yogurt/soft cheese in 6 days. Looking forward to chewing

I'm posting this in an effort to help others. Everyone has a different doctor, Bariatric team, etc. so this is in no means the be all, end all way of doing things. I had my surgery at the Mayo hospital in Jacksonville, Florida. My Bariatric team, from my psychologist, nurses, nutritionists and everyone in between couldn't have been nicer, more supportive but most of all informative. I see so many people on here with questions at each stage of the diet. That's why I've decided to post a few pages from the book I was given at Mayo. I'm almost 5 months post-op and have stuck to these very simple guidelines. At 53, I have been full of energy and not once had any nausea, thrown up or had any problems whatsoever. I was proactive prior to surgery in researching everything I possibly could. I tried numerous Protein shakes, bars, yogurts and recipes. My favorite Protein shake is Premier at 30g per 11 oz. container. My favorite Protein Bars are Quest at 20g per bar. My favorite yogurt is Dannon Greek Lite and Fit Toasted Coconut/Vanilla at 12g per container. A few of my favorite recipes are my "Magic Crust Quiche" which I started eating in the "soft" food stage and continue to love today. I love using Premier Protein drinks as my coffee creamer and as a substitute for milk in making sugar-free/fat-free boxed puddings. My latest discovery is delicious pizza where the crust is made with ground chicken. This is a lifestyle decision I've made for myself and the surgery is merely the "tool" to help me achieve better health. It's the BEST decision I ever made and I'm loving discovering new things every day

Just got my new birthday date! October 12th!
Beni replied to Zasha069's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is indeed your new birthday. I had surgery almost a year ago and I plan a celebration. I have lost 110 lbs and have reached my goal. It's fantastic but the amazing thing is how good I feel. I feel like I reset the clock 20 years because I feel the kind of energy I had back then. The first 4 months were a little difficult managing food and drink but after that I have been great. Only once in a blue moon I get sick because I tend to eat too fast and don't chew enough, my bad. I have to be careful not to eat too much desert too but my taste buds have changed. Now my idea of a wonderful dessert is Greek 100 yogurt with a handful of blueberries mixed in. -
Your surgeon's post-op liquid/food phases
ttdish replied to Kgl24's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon's plan allows real food very early on. I was having cottage cheese and yogurt on day 3. He's been doing it this way for years with no problems. Here is what the plan looks like: I also did a YouTube video describing my first few weeks, since it is SO different from most of the plans I see. No clear or full liquid phase at all once I was discharged. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KWmDNXTFBtw ~*~ Find me on YouTube: Trisha's Sleeve Story ~*~ -

Puréed suggestions please!
Sharon1964 replied to Twinmomma422's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Make sure you find out from your surgeon what you're allowed to have. A lot of things mentioned above I was not allowed at one week. No meat, no chicken, nothing with lumps, no seafood. I was allowed things like: applesauce, hummus, greek yogurt (smooth), sugar free pudding, Jello, broth, non-cream Soup, mashed potatoes. Three meals a day, 1/3 cup food at each meal, no Snacks. -
So I'm almost 3 months out and for some reason and struggling with lunch. Tried ricotta bake--loved it until I ate it for lunch 2 weeks straight and still have no desire to eat it again. I've made chicken salad, taco salad (without chips/nachos!), had some lentils and I'm bored with all of these. Anyone have a go-to lunch? I usually do yogurt and berries for breakfast, some type of meat in the evening, plus a protein shake and a couple low fat cheese strings during the day as well. I just need some better take to work lunch ideas!

As everyone has said, there is nothing wrong with the fact that you are at McDonald's. The problem was that, as you identified, you ate too fast and too much. If my kids want McDonald's, I order a fruit & yogurt parfait or a baby cone (if we just stop for ice cream) and have done fine on both of them. If I were craving egg, I would not have hesitated to order what you ordered, just ate half!

Your surgeon's post-op liquid/food phases
ShrinkingPeach replied to Kgl24's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Not crazy at all...it is amazing tho! Enjoy it and keep up the compliance. I had to do a 2 week pre-op diet of Protein shakes, sf pudding, light yogurt and Water. Week one post-op was 3 Protein Shakes a day with all the water I could do. Week 2-4 was soft foods (including eggs, flaky fish and deli chicken/turkey. One Protein shake a day and fluids. Week 5 was reintroducing regular foods slowly. No nuts til 3 months. Mine was relatively easy compared to some but I did tolerate everything well and have had no issues. 4 months post op and down 61 pounds since surgery and 91 total from pre-op to now. -
I am doing a 5 day pouch reset. The first 2 days are liquid , cream soups, hearty soups, clear broths then day 3 is soft protein like tuna and salmon, yogurt and cottage cheese and string cheese is acceptable. Sugar free fudge pops protein drinks etc, days 4 and 5 are fish and chicken with lightly seasoned veggies, tofu, and veggie patties. At least 64 oz of water. Hoping this will help

Thanks everyone. You're right. Live and learn. In the past, mistakes like this would completely derail me but I'm trying to change my mind not just my body. I think part of the bad decisions is that I've run out of groceries and don't get paid for a couple days so it was easy to pay a few bucks. And then just going through the line and NOT getting anything is a huge adjustment. Next time I'll order an ice Water or a yogurt. McDs is a weak spot for me. My niece works there and brings food home. I pick her up and would go through the drive through. Maybe if I make a list of ok choices for fast food places and keep it w me, I won't fall back into making bad choices so easily. IDK. maybe it's just going to be trial and error. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll definitely try them. Time to try to forgive myself and move forward.

I have found that the only "fast food" I can tolerate is Subway since you can control what you put on the salad. I tried the egg stuffing of a breakfast burrito at McDonalds once and it was a mistake. I'm not allowed pork yet so I tried to pick it out and eat the rest but I was vomitting. At McDonalds I would suggest the yogurt parfait, it's only $1!!, or oatmeal. I have had both and they go down and stay down!

Liver Shrink Diet causing Liver enzymes to be high?
Elizabethrrt posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was supposed to have Surgery Sept 9 of this year and started the Liver Shrink diet Aug 10. I have stuck with this diet even though the first week was VERY hard. It consist of a Protein shake for Breakfast and lunch, a small fruit and 1 cup yogurt for snack, 6oz meat 1 cup salad greens with 1 tablespoon fat free dressing 1 cup certain veggies and 2 carbs for dinner, and a Protein Shake for an evening snack. I went to get my preop lab work done and then the day before surgery was to happen, it was canceled due to my liver enzymes were too high. Back in June my liver was in perfect shape. Enzymes were fine and ultrasound was fine and now they are very high. I think this could be the diet doing this but my dietitian does not think it is so they want me to continue the diet until I get released from my PCP. They are going to check my enzymes again Monday and if they are down my PCP will give the ok for surgery and surgery will be on the 30th. Has anyone else ever had trouble with the diet causing your enzymes to be high? Thanks for your input Elizabeth -

15 days post op with chronic diarrhea
PlBren posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 15 days post-surgery and for about the last 5 days, I've had diarrhea every day. I am at the point where I am trying soft/pureed foods and it seems to be what triggers the diarrhea. So far, cottage cheese seems to be the only thing that doesn't trigger it (but it has been a few days since I've tried it). Greek yogurt, cream Soups, soft/pureed veggies, refried Beans, they all seem to upset my stomach. Yes - I'm only eating small amounts (3-4 teaspoons) and eating it slow enough (it stays down, I have not yet vomited). But anywhere from 1 to 4 hours later, I'm in the bathroom. Did anyone else go through this? Is it simply too soon for me to introduce these types of foods? Or could it be a bigger issue? -
Breakfast time - multivitamin, Vitamin D. I mix a scoop of Upcal D (powdered calcium citrate) into my yogurt. mid-morning - drop two calcium citrate tablets into my Protein shake (they'll dissolve after awhile) dinner time - multivitamin, vitamin B complex. Have a calcium chew after dinner (my "dessert") before bed - Iron I have some 5000 IU B12 sublinguals and take one once a week (on Sundays). I actually haven't found it all that difficult (once I got the hang of it)

Just wanted to share a story about today's experience, (I am 6 weeks post op.) This morning at breakfast i had a plum and less than 5 mins. after my first few bites, it got stuck and it came back up. At lunch I had a Dannon Light & Fit Cherry Greek Yogurt. Even though i tried to chew the cherries, they must have gotten stuck because nothing else would go down, and I ended up spitting up the yogurt. I have eaten other things today and they went down fine so I know it had to be the skin. I guess I can't eat anything with skins yet. Thanks for listening.

Vomiting
ReeseLanden replied to stillmeonlysmaller's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Something similar happened to me about 2 weeks out. It was with Greek Yogurt. I had been enjoying it and one morning the smell itself made me nauseous. I tried to muster up a bite, but started gagging. I didn't actually vomit, but was close. I have found myself changing my cravings a lot lately, where one day I will love something I am eating and then the next day it grosses me out. I am 4 weeks post op. Hopefully you just experienced a day where your tummy didn't like the food anymore. Good luck, I hope it's nothing serious! -
@@toasty I hate that there is a discrepancy among doctors when detailing post-op diet. Just like with pre-op dieting. Trying to filter through the information can be confusing, difficult and frustrating. I have known several people who didn't have a pureed food phase. They were given the okay to have deli meats (lean), flaky fish and even shredded chicken breast at two weeks post-op. In fact a couple of the girls I follow on Youtube talk about their diets the first 2-4 weeks and they talked about having grilled chicken and sliced deli meat with soft cheese spread. Ugh, I am so confused! On my sheet is specifically details that at days 8&9 I can have thinned cottage cheese, strained cream Soups, yogurt. Then starting on day ten I begin my Bariatric SOFT Protein diet. Then that is all my diet can consist of for almost three weeks before starting the Bariatric Regular Diet. Which would add fruits, vegetables to the already soft protein diet. Does any of this even make sense? Or am I just hungry?

You need to become clear on whether you are on the "pureed" food stage or the "soft" food stage. They are different. Generally people go from liquid to pureed to soft foods, with typically two weeks at each stage (although it differs considerably by doctor). If in doubt, I would assume pureed until you can ask you doctor or NUT, and get confirmation. Better safe than sorry. In pureed, everything must be, well, pureed. All smooth. No chunks. As far as Oikos Triple Zero Banana Cream, I just looked it up on MyFitnessPal food database, and it looks fine nutritionally (very similar to non-fat greek plain yogurt). Just make sure that there are no chunks in it. I use Almond Milk with no problems. YMMV.

I was so excited to move to pureed foods after several weeks sucking down broth. I wanted some texture! All plans are different. I could have yogurt during the liquid phase. I wasn't limited to plain yogurt, but could have any yogurt I wanted as long as it was low fat and under 10 grams of sugar - oh and no chunks of fruit. Are you going into pureed foods or "soft" foods? During the pureed stage, I pureed everything. Some of the things I pureed were chili, chicken breast and pot roast. When you are in the pureed stage, you can't eat with your eyes. I didn't thin the mashed potatoes and it only took 2 bites of cream of wheat for me to say no way...this is yuck. I love the premier pre-made shakes, so I never had to deal with almond milk. I'm in the soft foods stage now. I make chicken salad, taco salad (no chips), and manwhich. I also marinate chicken breasts, that I can grill. Oh...I also made bbq pork ribs in the crockpot that were absolutely delicious. I've made marinated grilled shrimp that is to die for. You do need to watch how much bbq sauce and marinade you use because of the sugar content. I think this stage is pretty fun. I look at pinterest and other recipe site trying to find recipes that will fit the soft food stage - and there are tons of them. I'm lucky too because I have a very supportive husband and he doesn't mind being the guinea pig with all of the new dishes that I'm feeding him. You wouldn't think that I'm afraid to eat after all the foods I just described, but I am. I carefully weigh all of the foods I consume so I don't over eat. I even carry a pocket scale in my purse so I can weigh my food if we eat out. I'm terrified of stretching my pouch. I think this is completely normal. So instead of fearing the unknown - PLAN for it! I'm sure your dietician will give you a list and guidelines for your next stage in eating. Believe me - you can eat delicious - yet very healthy food - and still be 100% compliant on your plan.

In two days I will be given the green light to start introducing "soft" Proteins into my diet. While I am over the moon about not having to suck down broth and can actually put some substance passed my lips, I am freaked about taking on too much too soon. I have read SEVERAL articles, journals, personal stories and all seem to differ slightly in how "soft proteins" are defined. On my resource sheet my doctor describes soft Protein as flaky white fish, moist chicken, ground turkey, thin slice lunch meats but other information suggests those items must be pureed. As in blended to paste. Not only does that make my stomach turn but I don't think I could eat meat in paste form. I'm also confused by why yogurt needs to be "plain" when many, many brands with many, many flavors have no "chunks" in them. Like the Oikos Triple Zero banana Cream. No chunks, no sugar, no fat and packs 12 grams of protein and if you add Protein powder could have a punch of 20 grams of protein. Why would that be an issue? Has anyone had "thinned out" mashed potatoes, grits, cream of wheat and suffered horrible consequences? Has anyone in the first month post-op used Almond Milk (unsweetened) to make Protein shakes? Were the results painful? I think I am losing my mind in over thinking. I'm just so damn scared to eat something, get sick and feel wretched. Please tell me this is all normal thinking. I'd hate to be losing my mind with my weight.
