    NSV (Non Scale Victories)

Last night while DH was watching the play off game, I went to our bedroom to watch something I wanted to on the TV in there. It got a little chilly, so I grabbed a small throw I use to cover the grandbabies when they sleep on my bed, and covered up. When the game ended he come in to the room, he walked in the door, and stopped, and smiled, and told me I looked little bitty in that bed (King size----of course!) As I lay there, I realized, I did in fact take up very little space on that bed as compared to before, and I fit under that little blanket with some to tuck in! So in the night I thought about it, and suddenly realized, I now simply roll over, in one fluid motion. Used to be a series of grunts, and rolls, and shifts, and more settling----it took a lot to turn me over!!! Now it is a non issue! Not the type of NSV's usually associated with bed------but they made me happy!!! Kat

    New NSV woot.

Laura, what a good NSV. I would be so thrilled with that! I have had chronic heartburn for the past four or five years, resulting in Barrett's esophagus, and I'm on Nexium one or two a day. It let up during the liquid phase but came back again when I started solids. I am SO hoping I get to share in your NSV soon!

Following my own advice -- :(

"I'm only frustrated with myself for giving into the frequent weighing. Oh, sure, I'd love to be losing as quickly as some. As helpful as this board is, the down side can be reading about others gushing about how the weight is falling off when it isn't happening to me. And I know I'm not losing because I don't have restriction yet, because I had a low BMI to begin with, and because I'm perimenopausal and having periods that last two weeks and come every two weeks. " Longhorn, you are doing great! If this were someone else, wouldn't you say the same thing to them? I think we all are a lot harder on ourselves than if the same thing were happening to others. If weighing you every day is depressing, then stop! You don't need that aggravation. I like weighing every day. If I don't then I gain for sure. And my weight fluctuates all the time. I tend to lose, then gain it back, then lose it once and for all, then plateau there for a while, and the cycle begins again. But if you're frustrated by it, then how about just at your doc's office like you first started? How about you throw out that scale and just rely on your doc's? Then it's not even there to tempt you, and you can focus on NSV's and the way your clothes fit. ALSO, big important thing here, you always weigh more at the doc's office than at home. Usually at home it's in the morning, no clothes, no food in your belly. At the doc's office you're wearing clothes, retaining Water weight from the day, etc, etc. I also hate the gushers. It makes me want to stab myself in the eye. It's hard not to compare to others though. I feel like I'm losing at a great rate FOR ME - it's probably slow compared to others. It looks like I've lost a lot but most of that was on my liquid phase in the beginning. I've slowed right down, but for ME it's absolutely incredible, and I have to keep reminding myself of that. I'm thankful when I don't GAIN, so to lose is an absolute miracle. I also have a hard time with challenges. It kind of sets me up to fail. But they can be very motivational for the right people. So, end of story, you're doing great! Don't beat yourself up! And do what works FOR YOU!! Love ya! Linda XOXO

Sorry Ted...that was a bath room joke about the politician in the airport mens room....never mind it was a bad one anyway!!!! Good luck with the band....It is all worth it. I am down 61 lbs and feel like I have my life back already! I have NSV's (non scale victories) everyday. From tying my shoes to running up the stairs to buying clothes in the regular dept. It all feels great. Good luck and keep us posted on your surgery. This site has so much information, it is a great place to hang out!

Yay for you Manatee!!! You look awesome! I had a shopping NSV today too. I went shopping with my 12 year old at Delia's which is geared for young girls. I tried on a coat (did not look like it was for the teenage set) and it fit!! It was a little snug in the arms but I could have pulled it off. I did not buy it but my NSV was my daughter saying "wow Mom you can shop with me now, that us soo cool!"....she was so happy and I could tell she was proud of me! That was the best feeling ever! I also caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror and I was surprised that I am starting to look normal....not obese! Congrats everyone....I am so proud of all of us!

    Unrealistic Ideals

Have you all taken your measurements? Bet you find that you have lost inches all over. My weight isn't dropping as fast as I would like, but my favourite shirt pre-op (which fit just right) now needs to be taken in by 3 inches on each side seam:biggrin: I think we need to start looking at our NSV's instead of the scales. I don't really want to get into details, but at least you might understand why I haven't been around much...accountability. I did have a NSV this week. I measured my waist for new work pants about a week ago and the tape said 38.5, so I thought 38 size mens pants would work...they were too big! I am now in a 36. They are slightly snug, but actually surprisingly comfortable considering I thought they'd be too tight! One more size and I'll be even with DH. LOL I SO look forward to being smaller than him.

    The Sweetheart Goal!

well, if you ever come across a FASHION BUG stop and shop! its my all time FAVORITE place to shop. they carry both regular and plus clothing but have EQUAL amounts of BOTH! and the prices, well, you just cannot beat them! oh, i have an nsv to share w/ya'll...i know its not the right thread...but, today, while shopping @ the fashion bug, i bought new panties! and i got to buy a size 9 instead of a size 10! i have been in size 10 panties for as long as i can remember and well, i was just excited bc all my panties have been baggy on me for the past month but i kept putting off buying any bc i didn't want the 9's to be too tight....but i finally broke down and said, no more saggy undies! it is time! had to share! xoxo, christie

    What is NSV?

    Nsv!

Congrats Laurend. I wish I'd taken my measurements before the surgery. I had a similar NSV today. My boyfriend had bought me these flannel house pants type things the day of my surgery so I'd have something comfortable to wear post surgery. Well of course I couldn't get them on which was no surprise. I decided to try them on tonight and I'm wearing them! They are even a little loose. So even though I haven't lost that much weight something is changing! This is fun!

    Nsv!

I had another fill on Wednesday and met with my nutritionist, too, for my 6 month post-op check-in. Guess what?! I've lost inches! She weighed and measured me and showed me the difference in my measurements from a week before I had surgery and my measurements now. Eee! I'm still at the point where I can barely see the weight-loss in the mirror, so actually seeing how many inches I'd lost was such a motivator! I don't actually remember the exact inches lost (stupid me, forgot to write them down), but it was something like 9 inches off my chest, 5 off my waist, and 6 off my hips. That, combined with the fact that I'm about to go down another size in clothes, REALLY helps.

    NSV (Non Scale Victories)

I haven't had a NSV in some time, but today I had 2 !!! 1) I used a public restroom and my hips didn't hit the stall walls !! 2) I fit into a size 16 top in H&M I started out as a 30 !!! Now only if my lower half would catch up ( in pants I'm a size 22)
  17. God dang, I am freezing my ass off lately. Its no longer walking around in a t-shirt and jeans when its 30-40 degrees out. Now I am learning the joys of layering...
  18. Doddie, my approach to this project was quite different. I stopped weighing myself when I was 25 years old which was a long, long time ago. I knew that I was getting fat only by the fact that I was needing to buy bigger and bigger clothes and by looking at myself in the mirror. The first time I weighed myself after all these years was the morning of my band operation. I discovered that I weighed 200lbs. After I was banded I never did bother to buy a scale. I was still kinda phobic about the notion of weighing myself. But everytime I went in for a fill I did request an official weigh-in on TLBC's high-tech scale and I found that I was losing weight. At home I relied on NSVs and I had many positive NSVs throughout this journey. Dropping clothes sizes was a gas and having my mate telling me that I was losing weight in my face or on my stomach sure was nice. After awhile my weight loss became sufficiently noticeable that folks in the neighbourhood began to comment and that, too, was kind of cool. I am inclined to think that we should all understand that the healthiest weight loss is that which comes slowly; a weight loss of this nature permits our bodies to gradually readjust to lower setpoints. But the truth is that miracle weight loss is what we all want, do we not? For close to a year before I had myself banded I would find myself still awake at 3 AM, unable to fall asleep, grabbing up great handfuls of my belly flesh, and feeling choked by a dreadful sense of self-loathing and powerlessness to do anything about controlling the continuing creep of lard. In brief, I was very, very f/messed up about this biz of fattiness. It is always terrifying for us, is it not, for we are like everyone else - except that our bodies have gone spinning out of our control. The band has definitely saved my arse and it has shaved a bunch of inches of it, too. It occurs to me that too much weighing might be a bad thing. I have heard that many folks have experienced significant loss of inches during their plateau periods. This is an indication that the body is readjusting itself, I figure. And as for those of us who are hitting the gym biz in a big way, it is important to remember that muscle weighs much more than fat and yet it takes up way less space in your body. Of interest is the fact that muscles, even when they are at rest, burn up more energy (calories) than does anything else. This is why men tend to gain weight less easily than women and lose it with less trouble. And thus my advice: don't allow yourself to get overly hung up on the results of your scale; this may be counter productive. There are a raft of NSVs to which you might wish pay more attention, attach more significance.

    Hypoglycemia only after Lapband?

I am glad the OJ is working, do you take any meds for diabetes or high BP? If so, it might be time to have you PB and sugar levels checked to see if you need to cut down on those meds also. That could explain alot. If you are not taking such meds, I would still run it by you doc at your next check up just to make sure. I have been experiencing the same things, but I know its cuz I am on the too tight side and can't really get anything down until about 3p.m. So mine is from hunger. Hey though, at least you are not fat and getting it because it has been 30mins since you've eaten. LOL, its funny how even the stupidest stuff is like a NSV in our band world!

    January Exercise Challenge

I really like this new look. Anyways I have to share my fabulous news. After being down about the fact that I couldn't see/feel a difference after losing weight, I finally found something. I joined a gym today and it seriously is the best thing I have ever done for myself, besides the band. I did 2 miles on the treadmill, BUT I RAN 1.25 OF THOSE MILES! Now it wasn't all continuous, but I did run .5 straight. Then I did another 1 mile on the eliptical. So here are my HUGE NSV's. 1. I ran .5 miles straight for the FIRST time in my life. 2. I wasn't the fatest girl at the gym:thumbup: 3. I didn't feel like I was dying 10 minutes into my workout. 4. I CAN'T WAIT TO GO BACK TOMORROW:Dancing_biggrin: Well after an hour at the gym I need to go get some work done.

    nsv related to my car

Jfran - I know how much work that can be as a heavier person. At my pre-op visit with the surgeon, I had to crawl in the passenger side and across and I literally had to put the seats down in order to struggle through. Congrats on such a huge NSV - hopefully, I'll be able to do it easily in the future too. Anna
  23. So this was an unexpected nsv. I was trying to get in my car in a parking garage and the car next to me parked so close to the driver side that I couldn't even open the door. I went to the passenger side and crawled in and over the gear shift to get into the driver seat. NO PROBLEMS. Before there is no way I could have maneuvered my body across and over, now it was a piece of cake. So maybe I really am smaller.

    New NSV woot.

If you see some of my other posts, I've had chronic heartburn since I was 10, and months after banding, it's still a daily occurance. I forget my Prilosec sometimes, and pay the next day. Well last night I was having some heart burn and realized I hadn't taken Prilosec in a week!! And the only time I had heartburn was last night! And it was MILD.. I've never had it be MILD. And I've never gone a week without heartburn unless I was taking my meds. WOOHOO!! :pray2:

    Lower BMI'ers--2008!!!

I'm with you. I haven't lost any weight since September. It is depressing, but the good news is that I put on a couple of pounds over Christmas just to have it fall right back off once the fudge was put away! Usually I carry around Christmas from one year to the next and it snowballs....argh. So this is a NSV! We just have to keep on track and not get blue as it will come off eventually.
