    Having cold feet….

    Complications are fairly rare. And honestly—this is from someone who resisted the surgery because "I can just do it on my own"—I wish I had kicked my own butt 15 years ago. It's not that it's effortless—I have to put in work to lose weight—but it's that when I put in the work, I actually lose the weight, instead of that incredibly frustrating "why isn't this working" garbage. Basically what you're getting is a tool that doesn't allow you to deviate much from the plan. But you still have to reduce eating and get in exercise. The difference is you can't fall off the wagon. Your new anatomy won't allow it, and by the time you get to the point where you could overeat, you'll be so used to tracking what you eat and being careful that it'll be second nature. I mean, I'm only two months out (from sleeve, not bypass) and I already always automagically reach for my phone when I set food down in front of myself.

    Gaining weight

    You may be slipping up in minor ways that add up in the long run. Weigh and measure everything. Track your food on an app like Baritastic. It will keep you aware of what you are actually eating. You could also try resetting your set point by returning to all liquids, and build up again to solid foods over several weeks. If you have achieved your goal and stayed there for a while, a bit of weight gain is quite normal.

    28 Weeks Post-Op

    if you're following your program and your overall weight is trending down, then don't worry about it. People lose at all different rates depending on several different factors, many of which you have little to no control over (age, gender, starting BMI, metabolic rate, whether or not you lost a lot of weight pre-surgery, body composition (what percentage of your body weight is muscle), etc). The two things you DO have a lot of control over is how closely you follow your program and your activity level. If you do well with those, then you'll be fine. I was a slow loser from the get-go, and I lost 100% of my excess weight. Took almost two years, but I did it. In the end, your commitment to your plan is what determines your success, not your rate of weight loss.

    it's pretty normal to have cold feet before a major surgery... I can just tell you my own experience. I spent literally decades trying to lose my excess weight (I'm in my 60s). At my highest, I was well over 300 lbs. I tried over and over and over again to lose it. During my more successful attempts, I'd lose 50 or 60 lbs. And invariably, a couple of months later, the weight would start piling on again until I was back to where I started. During my less successful attempts, I'd lose maybe 20 lbs. Same thing - it was only a matter of time before I'd put it all back on. I had over 200 lbs to lose. I finally accepted the fact that I'd never get that off if I couldn't even keep 50 lbs off. Fewer than 5% of people with a significant weight problem can take off their excess weight and keep it off. Maybe you are one of those lucky few. I was not. Weight loss surgery was the only thing that ever worked for me. as for complications - yes - there's a risk of them, as there is with any surgery. There are even risks associated with having your wisdom teeth removed....or your tonsils. But many of us never have complications - and of those who do, most are minor and "fixable". Major complications are pretty uncommon. You're much more likely to suffer complications from obesity than you are from weight loss surgery.

    I have lost and gained plenty in the past. However I honestly have never gone 6 months on my own eating well and exercising like now. I usually have thrown in the towel around month 3-4 when weight loss slows so this is a big improvement. I think I’m just nervous and trying to rationalize not getting it….
  6. I've been looking for a surgeon who can perform weight loss surgery on me. My problem is that I have a BMI of 30, I have hypothyroidism and keep gaining weight. I'm the heaviest I've ever been. I've tried everything and nothing works. Doctors wont even see me because of my BMI. I'm willing to self pay. Does anyone have any recommendations?
  7. Your English cussword made me laugh! Ive already cheated a little and will prob continue to do so. However, after ingeting 250 calories yesterday I managed to gain 4 pounds by today. *sigh*
  8. Finally home! Now I can get some rest. I hate sleeping in hospitals. Little to no pain. No gas pain but I still took a gas x just in case. Oh and I gained 10 pounds of fluid weight 😩

    Can't speak from experience, unfortunately, as I'm still in early stages but assuming I'm able to successfully lose weight leading up to the surgery, I've wondered about the same thoughts. Even asked my doctor if a lot of people drop out after their able to lose on their own (she said no). The reason I think I will continue is I've successfully lost weight in the past only to gain it back later. I think I need this change to make it a permanent loss. I don't know if you've been able to lose on your own in the past only to gain in back, but that may help you decide if you should go forward.

  11. I have the same "concern". I have had DXA scans done and my lean body mass fluctuates between 205 and 215 lbs... so that's what I based my goal weight on. 240 lbs. would be 10-15% body fat. We'll see if I can get there!
  12. I'm still very early in this process (have met with Dr., psychologist and had lab work) and today I'm having my first meeting with the dietician. I'm very excited because I desperately need the help. But also very nervous because I feel like things get very real after this and I just don't have much confidence I can make changes to my eating habits. It's been a miserable year of trying, driving me to the (somewhat) depression I have now that's caused me to seek out surgery. And I'm really concerned what it's going to do to me psychologically if she tells me I need to do X (to prepare for the surgery? to prove I'm ready?) and I fail at it. Yesterday was a really tough day for me emotionally, I'm not even sure why. I've lived a very happy 50 years and it's only the past year the weight has really gotten me down. And I'm just not sure what's going on in my normally clear head right now. Really appreciate BariatricPal, though! I've never talked much about weight stuff with people who can relate before. It's therapeutic.
  13. Hi Everyone, I am new to this forum and would love some input into the concerns I have which pertain to my weight loss/progress. So I am 28 weeks post-op as of tomorrow and I feel as though my weight loss is a little slow. So far I have lost 4 stone and 8lbs (64 pounds) but I am struggling to hit the five stone mark. On Facebook, I am part of a group that has new and post-op patients from the clinic that I did my surgery with but everyone’s progress seems to be much better than mine. I am 24, 5ft 4 and my starting weight was 21 stone. I am grateful to be currently 16 stone 13lbs but I feel as though I should be loosing more. Am I worrying too much, or would you all agree with me? All replied appreciated 😊

    When did you get back to exercise?

    This is all great information! I'm going to talk to my surgeon, but I'm wondering how quickly people get back to other activities, like bodyweight exercises. Resistance bands or other stuff you do around the house, and then videos like this: https://youtu.be/ZiDgJEt3x1U Of course it's all individual and I will talk to my surgeon. But just wondering people's experiences/opinions. I was told not to lift more than 10 lbs, does that mean after 2 weeks or so I can use 8lb weights (one at a time) to tone my arms? Just excited to do this all and I know I'm going to be bored healing at home for 5 weeks after surgery.

    Depression and gastric bypass

    I have had depression for a long time. Last year in lock down with all the bad news all the time almost broke me. Friends and family rallied round and helped me along. I realised I have bad days and they pass. Exercise and getting out of the house really work for me. Most people who come to bariatric surgery have dieted and failed many times. We have come to believe that even this will fail for us. I have read thousands of posts on this site and people say this over and over. What will we do when we fail at this fails too ? Looking deeper into their posts shows how much weight they did loose. This has helped me. I am 7 days from surgery and it cant come soon enough. I will get nervous as the day comes nearer but thats just surgery nerves. You are not locked into yours, you can walk at any point. If you are not ready you will know. Be kind to yourself, take some pressure off and just breathe.
  16. Happens to me too and I am 1.5 months Vsg post op. I get that air bubble feeling and it is terrible to try to burp it up as it doesn't make it up all the time. If it feels like food is lodged and I start getting a ton of foamies I do end up vomiting a little. I use my iWatch timer for 2 minutes between bites has helped my brain catch up with my eyes as it relates to hunger. Just when I start to think I have enough room for that last bite...I stop and wait more and realize it's not happening. What does NUT mean.... nutritionist or significant other? [emoji51] Now that I am trying to get back into weight lifting I have definitely noticed a huge loss of muscle and strength...but as we are able to eat more I am hoping to gain back muscle.     Any December 2021?

    Hi! I’m scheduled for December 10th. I will be having the sleeve done in Mexico. I have insurance but it does not cover this type of surgery. I too am worried about my future after this procedure but from what I have researched, the sleeve helps control portion sizes and desire to eat as much. I’ve been eating healthier and drinking water and protein shakes in hopes of losing weight before the procedure and getting used to eating better. I’m so tired of yo-yo dieting. I just want to look and feel better. I can’t wait to buy the clothes I want to wear and feel more confident in my own skin. Good luck. I can’t wait to hear how you are doing after December 1st. ☺️
  18. I was able to climb the ladder to help my husband hang Christmas lights on the house. I used to be more than 100 pounds over the weight limit for that ladder and now I'm 100 pounds UNDER.     HI Shoppgirl! Yes, my surgeon basically said the same thing.. She said I will never tell you that you cannot ever have something/anything again. I felt that was quite a relief. And I wish I wasn't on this road of self-sabotage. I am refocusing my energies this week in an attempt to re-lose these 10 lbs. that I keep yo-yoing on. Ugh!! Why do we do this to ourselves? According to your weights, it looks like you are doing great! I do know what you mean by being at goal already if you hadn't acted up at the beginning - it's so hard not to though!!

    I did the same thing but honestly it was a waste. Had I not done that I’d be at goal already. Many of us do have at least a last supper though. Lol. Just know that for most of us we can eat all the same foods post sleeve. Just in moderation and much smaller portions. So you will be not having certain foods during weight loss but once you get to maintenance you will be able have them again. Honestly I do not have any food that I was told not to have. Just to make healthy choices.

    Hello Everyone, I had my gastric sleeve surgery on 10/14/2021. Dr Neil Floch did my surgery. My start weight was 255. Now I’m 225 as of today. How much weight should you loose in the first month? Im looking forward to going to the gym soon.
  22. you'll likely be eating more than 1000 kcal/day long term. That's really just during the weight loss phase. How much you'll need to maintain your weight depends on individual factors, and it's different for everyone. I can maintain my weight if I stay in the 1500-1700 range - and if I stay pretty active (exercising 5+ days a week), I can push that up to about 1900 kcal/day.
  23. I agree with everything Arabesque said. Plus I don't know if you weighed yourself when you got home from the hospital or not, but most of us "gain" weight from the IV fluids they pump into us -- some people up to 10 lbs. It takes a week or so for all that to work its way out, so it's not uncommon to have no weight loss at all - or even a gain - for at least a week.
  24. Whenever my weight goes up by a couple of pounds, I find the way to get the scale moving in the right direction again is to drink more water and track it. Maybe that would work for you, too?
  25. So... what happens when you stop checking out the forums every day and quit tracking? Well, for me it means weight gain. Hit my low of about 165 and then... well... then, essentially have been on a bender since then. It's been about a month. I know what I have to do, I just have to actually DO IT. I'm up 4lbs and can't seem to shake it. I'm NOT going over 170 again, but I have to find that happy medium between starving myself and gorging myself. My solution: start holding myself accountable. I'm starting over today. Tracking, posting, and weighing daily. For others out there in the same boat, don't give up or give in. Take it one day at a time and don't let setbacks get you down.
