RNs, What are you eating during your shift?
klingie84 replied to JDRN's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Rny n I take Greek yogurt, shakes, applesauce with protein powder, shredded chicken -
Hi Mastiff Mama I to had surgery on monday, I am having some issues, was in the hospital for one night and I think it should have been 2. anyways, I was on major pain meds as I had a hernia repair also, today I am still afraid to drink my costco Protein shakes so my husband went and got me some more clear protein from the docs office. I am taking lora tap, or liquid vicodin, and pantoprazole for acid once a day. today I was feeling a little better but around noon was having major stomach pain so had some loratap and that solved it. I am trying real hard not to get dehydrated, not easy to drink constantly. I am hoping to off meds by this weekend and try yogurt and pudding, I have not vomited once since I have been home but having issues on the other end. Keep in touch. I need to lose 60 pounds. Mary

Can you share a typical day of eating (once normal eating resumes after surgery)
Kindle replied to Mary Jane T's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm 17 months out and have been maintaining below goal for over 8 months. There is nothing complicated about my meal plan.....I simply eat a healthy, balanced diet of protein, fruits, veggies and whole grains. I don't measure, count track or buy special ingredients (except my protein powders). I'm single and don't really like to cook, so I do a lot of simple meals or whatever looks good in the grocery store deli. I eat a lot of soups and chili in the winter. I do still drink a large protein smoothie most days to make sure I'm getting enough protein. Yesterday.... Slice of turkey ham and 1 fried egg 2 large travel mugs of decaf coffee with 1/2 and 1/2 Carl's Jr. Single cheeseburger with tomato and onion wrapped in lettuce, no bun 20oz bottle Vitamin Water Seafood cocktail (fake crab meat with cocktail sauce) Mixed veggies (cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, zucchini) with Italian seasoning and parm cheese 1/4 apple with Peter Pan peanut butter Large cup of Sleepytime tea Chobani Greek Yogurt with Kashi Go Lean cereal Normal work day (I don't get a lunch break so there's lot of snacking all day)..... Decaf coffee with 1/2 and 1/2 Quest Bar or Kind whole grain bar Mixed nuts with craisins Homemade elk jerky 32 oz bottle of water Large Protein smoothie with fruit (banana, peaches or berries) and insoluble fiber supplement Protein for dinner (ham, beef, turkey, seafood, fish, whatever) Either a V8 or a couple servings of veggies, depending on how much room I have Greek yogurt Cup of tea And as for me, it's not necessarily about eating healthy 100% of the time, either. I have an alcoholic drink, candy, dessert, junk food, etc. several times a month. I pigged out over the holidays and then got back to basics afterwards. Just everything in moderation, like any "normal" thin person I know. -
I generally eat around 1/2 to 2/3 cup of food at each meal, and eat about 5 or 6 times a day. Yesterday I had: B: Leftover Pot Roast and Baked Potato - 22 grams Protein L: 1 egg omelet w/ 2T diced ham and 1 T shredded parmesan - 13g D: 1/2 grilled small hamburger and cottage cheese - 26g and for a bedtime snack I have been eating 1/3 cup bran buds with skim milk to try to get a little fiber - 13g fiber, 5g protein. Plus I had a Skinny Cow Fudgesicle and some Orange juice for Snacks. Totals for the day: 1200 calories, 46g fat (yikes!), 130g carbs (not bad), 19 grams fiber, and 72 grams protein. I am still learning how to eat high protein, low fat and low-ish carbs - I am only a little over 2 weeks out from surgery (isn't it crazy that my surgeon has his patients eating real food so soon?!) But I eat a lot of lowfat cottage cheese - big protein there, and so far I am ok with both chicken and juicy hamburgers if I put a little sauce on them. Sometimes yogurt, but that doesn't really fill me up. One day I had a little Peanut Butter with a few ww ritz crackers, which has good protein, but waaaaay high in fat, so I won't do it too often. I made some chicken salad with a little lite mayo, mustard and relish and that had a ton of protein, and went down well. I have not had any fills yet, so I am white knuckling the eating thing. I keep track of everything on thedailyplate.com, a great site IMO. Do you track your food? What kinds of stuff do you eat? Thanks for sharing, I usually get a lot of info off of the OH board, but the people over here are really nice. Deb

Baby Food
illgeturhairdid replied to urbandecayno5's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Personally, I thought the baby food was gross. There was only one flavor I could stand, I think it was chicken tetrazini. The fruits are okay (I actually buy the bananas as a snack and have done this for my entire life!). During your soft stage I really say greek yogurt is the way to go. You can add sugar free puddings to it to give it a nice flavor. I don't do the flavored greek yogurts because they are lower in protein and way higher in sugar. Good luck! -
Vsg to Rny w/ a December surgery date. Liquid diet for the holidays!
LeighlonLove replied to Khalilahluv's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm having revision surgery on 12/29 and started pre-op diet on the 15th. I had my VSG surgery in Mexico in 2016 and wasn't nervous at all. After gaining over 100 pounds back (thank you Covid isolation and depression) I decided to explore the conversion which was the surgery originally advised for me but my insurance wouldn't pay for it. I'm really nervous this time and I'm having surgery close to home. Also feeling super emotional about it and trying not to keep internally beating myself up for feeling like I failed! I struggle with the protein drinks so I've been buying the high protein yogurts and I found a zero calorie gatorade with added protein that they did a good job hiding the whey aftertaste. It's not as high in protein as a shake but I figure If I'm getting it in that's what matters -
What do you eat in a typical day?
Unforgettable replied to gbakerc's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just had my first fill a week ago, but have a great amount of restriction...maybe I'll be those lucky few who hit their sweet spot after only 1 or 2 fills. Anyway here is my menu from yesterday Breakfast - 1/2 cup greek yogurt w/1tbsp Peanut Butter lunch - reduced fat hot dog, no bun, and 1/4 cup green Beans snack - banana dinner - 1/2 homemade hamburger, 1/2 bun top, a few bites of baked beans That's not my normal menu, I was out visiting family yesterday. Usually I have the greek yogurt for breakfast and it will keep me full for a good 4 hours. I also use it as a snack if I get hungry in between meals. -
Moving Onto The Next Stage Of Food?
theby_88 replied to theby_88's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
another way to add protein to your potatoes is some plain fat free greek yogurt. It taste just like sour cream. Use it on chili or beans or anything you would want to use sour cream on. -
I think I might have thrush going? I'm 8 days postop and finished my antibiotic yesterday. I waited until yesterday to add drinkable yogurt because my paper said no sugar and low fat yogurt. I couldn't find this anywhere so finally found a low sugar low fat one. Anyways yesterday I noticed the way back of my tongue felt a bit sore and thought oh crap I'm getting sick. Today I noticed my tongue was covered in white and felt weird but it was right after I had my yogurt. Tried with all my might to brush all that crap off and was only able to get a little. Anyone else have this issue?

What are you eating 5-7 weeks post op?
BajanSleeve replied to Keona1323's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
at 5 weeks I had tea for breakfast and sometimes blended low sugar oats and mostly ready made protein drinks. I really liked the Glucerna steady carb protein drinks and I would just add some more protein powder to them. At 5 weeks only pureed things would stay down. Jars of low sugar baby food too. I am 6 weeks 4 days post op and can eat some solid foods like a rice cake with peanut butter, soft fruit, Greek yogurt, soft scrambled eggs. I ate 3 small soft meatballs tonight for dinner which went down just fine but chicken gives me difficulty so I will wait a bit longer before trying it again. I also drink smoothies with lower sugar fruits, spinach, yogurt in it with protein powder. You can look up low calorie/carb smoothies. I like to use a half of a beet, some cucumber, fresh ginger and mint and all that stuff to make it really tasty and nutrient dense. Sometimes I add about 8 almonds but you have to watch how much ingredients you put in and tally up the calories. you want it to be 200 calories and under. Berries are low glycemic so I use those the most. Half of banana since they are high sugar, I like peaches, etc. Make sure you put your protein powder in them. All depends what your taste buds are like. I live in a hot climate so a cold smoothie for lunch suits me fine and I enjoy sweet tasting drinks -
Im at the pureed stage starting Monday for 2 weeks. I have refried beans, mashed potatoes, egg whites, cottage cheese, yogurt, etc...baby food seems the easier option( im a grab and go type person)..what flavors are half decent?

Banded 10/1/2007 - IM GAINING!
kagoscuba replied to MissKim's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I was banded 9/27 and have been able to lost 30 pounds so far. I had my first fill on 10/19, and it made a difference last night, which was the first time I tried anything I couldn't drink or spoon out of a yogurt cup. I had a can of tuna for dinner and that filled me up perfectly. Of course that 30 pounds had nothing to do with the band other than the fact I did not want to get sick eating the wrong things. Here are the things I've done since surgery: 1. Followed doctor food instructions 95% to the letter. 2. Pack my Breakfast, lunch, and Dinner and take it to work with me, eating when desired. 3. Exercise at local gym 5 days a week and either work out on home on Saturday or make a point to get the family outside for some type of extended physical activity. Sundays I take off. 4. Drink lots of coffee, drink lots of Protein shakes, eat Muscle Milk pudding, drinking a fair amount of Crystal Light...the on the go packets are awesome! Just those four items have made a world of difference for me. I was even in Chili's on Saturday with friends and did not feel deprived. A typical meal a month ago would have been Boneless Buffalo Wings, a bowl of Soup, and an "Oldtimer" hamburger with fries and a couple of beers or sodas. On Saturday I was satisfied with soup. -
Hi! I was banded on 12/6 and I know how boring the first few weeks can be. I assume you are what my Dr. calls the full liquid stage. I drank Protein shakes (found Syntha-6 to be the tastiest), but also had Soups (I had good luck with organic soups from Safeway, as they didn't require any straining, so they were very convenient. There was Broccoli, Corn, Carrot and Squash). I could have yogurt,so I had yogurt and yogurt smoothies. I also had pudding. Not being a fan of chocolate, I found lots of new flavors in the sugar free instant pudding category - white chocolate, cheesecake, etc. I also like the sugar free carmel puddings from Hunt's. As always, follow whatever your surgeon and nutritionist recommend - every program can be different. Congrats on making this step and my best to you! Lucysmom 285/265/?

Baked ricotta with a dab of sauce and scrambled eggs was like heaven lol im one month out just got released on to moist meats but my day is still 2 to 3 shakes to make sure I get my protein in and than add a food here and there...yogurt, cottage cheese, baked ricotta, cream soups

You all probably already thought of this, but the way I get extra Protein in my full liquids is to add a jar (3 oz) of gerber baby chicken. For example, I put it in my black bean Soup and added some cilatro and green onion before I blenderized it. That really gives it a high protein kick. There are 12 gm of protein in 3 oz of baby food chicken. No fat, no carbs. I added it to other Soups too. Creamy soups go down nice and easy and the extra protein is a big plus for me. I am finding a lot of the full liqs are just too sweet for me, even though they are artificially sweetened, like the pudding and Protein shakes. I was missing some nice savory flavors. I also made a "soup" in the blender from a jar of chix, a can of cream of chicken soup and some thai green curry (from Trader Joe's). Also added a spoon of greek yogurt. While I had my dinner in a cup, my husband used the rest to dip his corn tortilla chips in and loved it. It satisfied my need for something hot and spicy without bothering my sleeve. I was worried that with a sleeve I wouldn't be able to do spicy foods. Looks like that's not the case so far. gg

Hi everyone! Maybe you can help me shed some light on what I am feeling... I am 8 weeks on Sunday. I have been feeling great. No side affects. I can eat everything now. Well, for the past week or so, my scale has not moved. I have lost 30 pounds since June 29th when I had surgery but the last week or so the scale has remained the same. Also, I feel hungry for the first time. I am told to eat every 3 hours. So, by the time 2 hours pass by, I am, what I think is hungry. I even had a headache today like I used to get when I was hungry and needed to eat. I am eating about 800 calories a day and am exercising daily and from what the elliptical machine says I am burning about 500 calories. But, I am hungry before my 3 hours. Let me give you an idea of what I ate today: Breakfast: yogurt, piece of string cheese. snack: greek yogurt, lunch: black bean Soup cup with a boiled egg; snack: Protein shake; dinner: ceviche (shrimp and fish in lemon). I am not sure what is going on??? Do you think exercising is making me hungry?

I bring cheese sticks, diced chicken, a side salad, Greek yogurt, lots of bottled water, carrots and hummus, protein bars and a protein drink. I'm a nurse and I also work 7a-7p 3-4x's a week. I try to pack at least 3 meals and a few snacks when I go to work. -
Full Liquid Diet - What Can I Eat?
faddiscc4 replied to Stacey Nicole's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm beginning the second week of my pre-op diet. I'm living on sugar free pudding and low fat-no chunks yogurt. Sugar free popsicles taste like crap, but I eat them anyway. you can have sugar free jello. I eat a TON of cream of mushroom soup. I have lost 8 pounds in 6 days. -
It's official - being able to "eat" did not make everything wonderful!
Tiffykins replied to MeMeMEEE's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Can you have yogurt yet??? I actually would chew up the vitamin, and then eat some yogurt, wait the 30 minutes and then start drinking. -
Today Marks A Week For Me! 7 Days Is Finally Here!
GivingItMyAll replied to alwayshavefaith's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That is awesome! I'm on 2 weeks of liquids (day 5) then on to 2 weeks of puréed. I'm thinking puréed Soups, not sure what else. Right now I have to purée and strain my soups. Oh, yeah, and I think I can add yogurt during the puréed phase. Sent from my iPad using VST -
Frustrated With The Foods I Can Eat....
DuranFan1969 replied to bethnc1970's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You could do refried Beans (add a little avocado or salsa or plain greek yogurt). You could also do scrambled eggs. I made a dish that was chicken breast (you'll have to shred the chicken about halfway through cooking), black beans, 1/2 cup or so of chicken broth, Rotel tomatoes and some cumin, let it simmer for about an hour and it's really pretty yummy and full of Protein - perfect for the stages you're in. -
How to get protein in early on
arex replied to Beachsprite's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
IsoPure drinks are pretty burly. Try one first before filling the cupboard with it, like I did. Fortunately, GNC happily refunded my money...they're good to deal with. Plain whey powder has an unfortunate cheesy flavor that is very pronounced in a lot of fruit-based drinks. It blends in well with chocolate or vanilla flavors, however. Plus there's the lactose-intolerance to consider. I've been relying heavily on lassi, an Indian yogurt-based drink. Very refreshing in the summer, and high-Protein. It can be made with simply spices and a little sweetener, or with fruit...a "salty" lassi can also be made using cucumbers or bell peppers (strain before drinking). There's recipes out on the web for all of it. There's soy Proteins that come in many forms...tofu, tempeh, miso, and powders. More neutral in flavor than whey. Not sure why soy has the stigma it seems to suffer from...I've always liked it, and it's easy to work with. Miso broth tastes good, and has lots of protein. -
Hi there Im Laura and I had surgery January 12 of this year. I weighed in the day of surgery at 267 and I now weigh 195. I had my first fill in APril and it didn't really do much. I felt a little restriction but I had another fill on Sept. 25 and this one is really tight. I have noticed that I can not eat anything until later on in the day. I just saw my doctor this afternoon (Nov 12, 2007) and Dr. Spivak (Im in Houston, TX) told me that it is not uncommon to NOT be able to eat until later on in the day with a heavy fill. Reason being is that your band tightens up more while you sleep so the morning time you are at your tightest. You also collect mucus around the band during the night which makes it tighter. I usually drink a slimfast or some sort of protien drink for breakfast and then by lunchtime I can usually eat some yogurt and a piece of cheese. Sometimes I have to wait until after 6 or 7 pm at night to really be able to eat solid food. If you are a breakfast person and want food first thing in the morning then Dr. Spivak told me that drinking something hot first and waiting 30 minutes with loosen the band up to where you can get food down easier. I have to say I have noticed that if I sip on some broth or hot tea and wait a little while and then try to eat I can usually get it to stay down without it coming back up or experiencing that horrible acid reflux feeling. I had the option today to have some of the fill removed but I said NO WAY. With the hoidays coming up I can manage now that I know what the deal is. Hope this helps you out!

Just need to vent- hard day
akwright68 replied to ireallywannabthin's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow, I thought my doctor was strict. I was banded on the 15th and I am just now being allowed pudding and yogurt. Next week I am allowed "blended" soup or chili. I am so tired of shakes as well. You have two more days, remember the end game here. We all did this for better health and to lose those extra pounds by being able to take control. You have the control, you can do this. It is just two more days. Stay strong. -

OMG this is exactly where I'm at, I'm so hungry just had some Greek yogurt, I can't wait until Monday. Is anyone having trouble with shortness of breath and trouble sleeping?
