  1. I need some advice from some bariatric veterans out there...I am almost 4 weeks out and worry that I'm already doing this wrong. I've been following my NUT's instructions, and am on the soft food stage (scrambled eggs, purees, tuna, yogurt, etc). She told me to continue doing the Protein shakes (60-80g daily) and incorporate two or three 2-4 tbsp meals in addition to this. She did not mention the amount of calories I should be getting daily. Well. I worry because it's already about 400 with the Protein Shakes (sometimes more if I use almond or skim milk), and then adding the small meals per day I am nearing 700 calories daily, and a lot of things I've read and heard is to try and stay between 300-600 calories per day. And this is at the very minimum amount of food, so I worry I'm already messing up! So my question is, what calorie range should I be within at this point, and how do people get all their protein without going over? (Some of the meals I make are 1 scrambled egg, salsa and cheese with a tiny bit of avocado mushed in / tuna and hardboiled egg with mustard and paprika / oikos triple zero greek yogurt / tilapia and mushed cauliflower) What sort of daily meals do you guys do? ***ALSO, as it gets further down the road, say 6 months+, how many tablespoons or ounces of food would you say you eat in a meal? I'm just hoping to get a frame of reference THANKS!!

    Greek Yogurt?

You can usually get it in the natural foods section of larger grocery stores. I like the unflavored Fage yogurt the best. I add a little vanilla extract, a packet of Stevia, and add a little homemade trail mix. Usually a 1/2 container with trail mix is enough for me. I agree with the poster who said get the unflavored. You can do so many more variations with it. Also the texture of greek yogurt is like sour cream. Some use it in place of sour cream in recipes. ps. A year ago I wouldn't have even come close to buying greek yogurt. Now - I LOVE it!

    Help! Thick liquid stage...

I got pretty creative with the soups by the end of it, including butternut squash soup and pea and pesto soup. Yogurt smoothies are good and you can buy pre-made ones that are fat- and sugar-free/low in sugar. You can also puree just about anything in a blender or food processor, just make sure to thin it out with broth, Water or juice depending on what you've got going in there. Be careful, though. I made the mistake of pureeing some beef stroganoff sauce (no rice or noodles) and thinned it out with beef broth, but it bloated me up. I think it was too soon for meats and too salty. You could try thinned baby food. I had the chicken and ham kinds but I didn't much care for the texture -- I found it kind of gritty. I also liked runny pudding and custards. My doc allowed me oatmeal and cream of wheat on full liquids as long as they were very watery and thin.

    Question about fills

Hi there, I just had my first fill (six wks post op) and it went very easily. Its just a tiny needle and I didn't feel it. She found my PORT easily too, she had to tell me when it was done and to get off the table... (I don't like to look LOL) Drinking the Water afterwards in the reception room was a bit weird though. My first 'sip' was about a teaspoon of water and I thought THAT was going to get stuck! But it did go down, and subsequent sips went down easier with each swallo... I had to drink a whole 500ml bottle before they let me drive home . Eating, oh yeah, I DO feel restiction.... Could only eat 2 oz of meat, and some veg. about 3/4 cup of food. But this a.m. I was able to eat 1 cup of oatmeal & 1/2 apple & skim milk. lunch was tuna salad 3 oz. and yogurt... tonight I am having Coq au Vin... a recipe I found on SPARKPEOPLE.com Its a great site for tracking your cal. nutricion, excersise, measurements, weight goals etc... check it out FREE~
  5. You will DEFINITELY Get better. The first week was rough for me too and I was totally exhausted. I'm a little confused about the yogurt. You should be able to eat some yogurt during the first week -- I'd just add some milk to it to make it go down a little easier. Also, you should seriously be sipping on your Protein shake ALL DAY LONG. You absolutely MUST get down 60 grams of protein every day. Go out and buy yourself one of those hand-held portable blenders that you just stick into the cup -- I still use my Protein Shake and LOVE it. THere's a whole thread on here somewhere about Protein shakes and how everyone makes them differently, but I add some flax see oil (Udo's) which someone suggested on here, Water and splenda. SOmetimes some vanilla flavored coffeemate too! Yum!!! Other people add a spoonful of reduced fat Peanut Butter and love it. Either way, it sounds like you're not getting your protein in and you really really need to be doing that! I also eat a lot of cream of wheat (NOT OATMEAL! TOO THICK).. I'd take the chunks of dried fruit out of the packet and mix with water and a little milk. Yum! Don't worry, this is just the tough time. It's difficult to cause a slip so I would not worry about that right now. Just clean your incisions, baby yourself and drink the protein! good luck!

    Thoughts and worries?

I had my lap RNY May 25 and was in the hospital 5 days. When I got home I weighed myself. I had been hovering around 336 preop, and weighed in at 344 (from the IV fluids). Today I weighed in at 318. I'm getting in my protein goal every day, not doing as well on the water but I'm trying, and staying around 600 calories per day. I know my weight loss is the exception and not the rule. Don't get discouraged, and just try to remind yourself you 6 months from now is going to look AND feel very different from you right now. I have the same problem with water as you. So you're not alone! Have you tried the Unjury unflavored protein powder? I add that to basically anything I can - just a half a scoop packs in a lot of extra protein and I find mixes really well with yogurt.
  7. Hi, I had my lap band surgery 7 days ago, and I am sooooo confused. First, with the liquids. I am just finding out I was supposed to have Clear Liquids only for 2 weeks, since I gotback from hospital I have been having yogurt, Soup ( with no lumps), custard, and ice cream. Then again, I was given capsules for the pain 2 hours after waking up.... My other concern is the burping, so strong, so excruciatingly painful, is it normal? called the nurse who had no idea. Am i drinking too much? too fast? too thick? Will i make my band move by following the written instructions ( burping was not in the instructions of course). And today, after some clear broth, hiccups. I paniked! Comments, thoughts, suggestions, I am terrified of going under the knife again. I have a 2 year old who needs me. thank you.... tellie

This week it is Fage 2% greek yogurt and Wild Harvest blueberry vanilla granola. Last week alternated chocolate protein shake with cottage cheese. Fridays I do bacon, egg, and half a piece of toast with jam as a treat. Hope you get some good ideas. Oatmeal with some protein shake mixed in is a good choice too.

    People who have a nutritionist...

Kaiser Fremont guidelines are Protein first, followed by vegetables or fruit. If there is room after than, a small amount of starch, such as 1/2 slice of bread or 1/4 c. potato. I never have room for the starch. Sometimes I don't have room for anything but 2 oz. of protein. We are to try to get our protein from food, but if that's not possible, then a Protein Drink in the evening to get the protein in. 65 grams of protein per day, at least 64 oz. of fluids (caffeinated coffee does not count towards total because it's a diuretic). 400-900 calories per day weeks 6-12. 600-1200 calories per day 12 weeks to 1 year. I get in around 600-800 calories per day. Lately (4 months and a few days), my diet looks like this: Breakfast: 16 grams protein, 120 calories: greek yogurt smoothie with 3/4 C. yogurt, 1/8 C. OJ, 2 strawberries, 1/4 C Water and 3 T Splenda Midmorning: 8 grams protein, 90 calories: Soy Latte with 1 cup light soymilk, 2 shots of espresso Lunch: 15 grams protein, 150 calories: 1 lite string cheese and 1 oz. light salami, 1/3 C. melon Dinner: 14 grams protein, 170 calories: 2 oz. dense protein (chicken, pork, fish, or beef), 1/4 C. mixed vegetables After dinner: 8 grams protein, 90 calories: Soy milk with a little sugar free caramel syrup That puts me at 60 grams of protein and 620 calories. I settle for that even though the program wants us to have 65. Lynda

    Mmmmm good stuff

I asked my beautiful wife to make me chicken cordon bleu for dinner tonight and boy did she come through! I had an idea to use pulverized wasa crackers as breading and Greek yogurt and shrooms as the basis of a sauce. Damn good stuff!

    God Bless Yoplait

I prefer Dannon Light & Fit Greek. The Yoplait has that "greek yogurt" flavor and texture that I never liked when I had tried it back when greek yogurt became very popular. But the Dannon tastes more like normal yogurt to me. Plus with only 80 calories and 12 grams of protein, you really can't beat it! I am addicted to the Key Lime and Raspberry flavors., although the Raspberry only comes in a 4-pack and the lids on the 4-pack options tear really easily and I'm always fighting with them to get them open.

    granola?

I haven't done granola because of the sugar. I'm sure there is a healthy option. I just haven't searched for it. I will pop a few raw almonds into my yogurt to keep me sustained. Yummy too!

    granola?

I recently started using granola in my yogurt. Tastes great and I have no problem with it. I am 3 months post op.
  18. Don't be alarmed...this is quite often. Some doctors do rigorous pre-op diets. In my case, I tell patients to go on a yogurt and veggie diet 5 days before the diet in order to 'reduce' the size of the liver. This allows us to have a clearer field of vision when performing the surgery. Don't sweat it...you'll be ok. Best, Dr. JSA

    Any Vegetarian Sleevers?

I will be two weeks out tomorrow so it hasn't been an issue yet. I am lacto ovo so I am planning on lots of eggs, cottage cheese and Greek yogurt. I've been a vegetarian for two years but I do find myself really craving a McDonalds chicken sandwich!
  20. Oikos has this key lime flavor that I absolutely love. Its the full fat kind, but I can't eat the whole cup anyway and I really can't stand the taste of artifical sweetner anymore. If I must, I'll mix 1/2 fat free vanilla with 1/2 of the key lime, to cut back on the calories. Be careful with the yogurt though, even greek yogurt (which I love and its the only kind I eat now.) While it is a great source of protein while you are in the liquid phase, I think its what caused me to go into a stall. I've just started eating it again at 2months out.

    Thinkthin Nutrition Bars

K- I too am always on the run... 4 boys 5-17 yrs and we live an hour from the closest town. I've tried the Zone protein bars, Detour protein bars and a couple others. The ThinkThin bars work/taste the best for me. I also carry Almonds, Peanuts in the Shell, String Cheese, Greek yogurt, and LOTS of Water (w/mio)! When in a pinch I have had a McD grilled chicken snack wrap- no sauce, and I throw away most of the wrap. Hope this helps!
