    Six months post WLS and you've been put in a position to fail. Not by your doing but by an inconsiderate person. You have only ONE CHANCE to do it right. Only one. You need to give it your best shot and not have an inconsiderate person sabotage your path to better health. I once again bring up the comparison to being an alcoholic . Would you allow anyone to hinder your recovery from alcohol by letting them bring it into your home? NO, so why allow him to sabotage your recovery from poor health and obesity by allowing him to bring in junk food? The choice here is very simple, for you to succeed with weight loss and getting back to good health he cannot be a part of your every day lifestyle. Get rid of the food or pack it up and drop it off to the place he is going to but you need to get it out of your home. Remember you are only six months out and you've already gained weight. I'm out four years and I will tell you it gets harder NOT easier to lose and maintain the weight loss. Your in the best position of your life to lose the weight. Don't let Mr. inconsiderate ruin it for you. Despite what you might hear, insurance companies will not pay for a do over. Make the best of this golden opportunity.

    I laughed when I read that because I got measured recently and I was trying to stretch as much as I could because I knew they would use it to calculate my BMI. She actually measured me 1/2 taller and I knew it wasn't quite accurate but hey, when you are 4'11", another 1/2 in counts. When I used to actually be 4'11 1/2" I'd just round it off to 5'. For some reason that sounded better to me! I think it's funny how we know all the tricks to influence our statistics! Anybody remember before we got digital scales how you could shave a little off your weight depending where you stood on the scale? Yep, we did that!

    I didn't really have an exact goal when I started. At my first surgeon visit he told me he thought I could get to 140. He asked me what my goal was and I told him I wasn't sure but once I got to 140 then we'd figure it out. It had been so long since I weighed that and it seemed so far away. At my first post op visit he said he thought I could get to 130. I said ok, I'll shoot for that and we'll reassess then. I reached that in 9 months. I told him since I only needed 7 more pounds to be a normal BMI, I was going to shoot for that. I told him I didn't come that far just to still be "overweight." He told me not to lose too much or I'd look sick. A friend of mine that had WLS told me "your body will figure it out. You'll stop losing when you body is done." It took me 2 more months to reach 123 but apparently my body wasn't done. I finally stopped losing at 108 lbs. And that is an appropriate weight for me because I'm only 4'11." I don't know why but this week I'm weighing in the106 range. I'm not trying to lose more. I think as long as I'm 110 or less I'm good. I'll be 3 yrs post op next month and I don't look sick...I look normal.
  4. I’m four, nearly five years out and had out some weight on because I rediscovered sugar. I’m now involved in a running battle with sugar and eating. intermittent fasting really helps, low carb helps but I now have this intense reaction to carbs and I’m at a loss. the extra weight - just a few pounds now, goes if I fast. The obsession with food goes too. But I get cramps and am sure I’m not eating enough when I do fast. feel a bit stuck! Had chips last night and my blood sugar shot up to 20 just after then down to four within 3 hours. But, if I do intermittent fasting, blood sugar stays constant at around 6. anyone dealing with similar?
  5. I was sleeved in March and have lost 60. But now I have someone staying with me, my ex. He has become homeless in the last 6 months. He bought a bunch of junkfood even though I told him no (two kinds of cookies, cheese-covered popcorn, ice cream, high cal fruit bars, chocolate cake) then he ended up in the hospital. I broke down two days out of a week and my old eating disorder kicked in, causing me to gain 5 pounds! Now he is calling saying don’t eat my food! I told him already he could not bring that into my house. He will get out in two days. I will be taking him elsewhere because even though he is contributing financially he is wrecking my weight loss. Btw, he is also smoking cigarettes. Guess I am looking for support in my decision to not let him live here any more. It is sad he may be homeless but he apparently cares nothing about my health. I know I will not be able to continue my program with him around.

    This sounds like the infamous "three week stall"—there are thousands and thousands and thousands of posts here about it. Just stay the course and the weight loss will resume!
  7. I agree with @FutureSkyDiver too. Our body tends to have places it prefers to store fat. For some it’s their tummy, others their butt, or breasts, or thighs, etc. Where did you tend to store your weight? When you previously put on weight, where did it go first? When you lose weight those places will likely be the last place the fat will go. What is your natural body shape? Pear, apple, hourglass, triangle, etc.? Even at a low weight that basic body shape will remain unless you become underweight & with very little or no body fat. I always have an hourglass shape regardless of my weight - the dimension ratios are just much smaller now 😉. I have a little pooch that sits above my waist & below my bust. I never had it when I was younger but have it now even though I weigh 10kg less. I blame that on age (56) & genetics (my mum has it too).

    Totally ok if you don't want to answer this question, Mandy, but I'm curious....when you lost weight in the months after surgery, did your clinic recommend you eat very low calories or did they encourage you to eat more normally sooner?

    I’ve had some regain. I’ll be 5 years out next March and I’ve gained back almost half of what I lost. I’m extremely depressed about it. I met with my doctor last week and see my nutritionist in a couple weeks. I work out with a trainer 1-2 times per week and go to the gym 3-4 times per week for about 40 minutes. I do HIIT training. I try to track but I’m not great at it…and I tend to get extremely obsessive about the numbers. I’m starting to feel like a failure and I feel like a deer in headlights! If you’ve been down this road please help. I could use some support and encouragement.

    Fluctuations

    Fluctuations are a part of life regardless of what we weigh. Water, constipation, diarrhoea, diet, hormones, etc. all can cause our weight to fluctuate a couple of pounds over a day or couple of days. If we ate exactly the same thing, pooped & peeed the same amount & did the exact same activity every day then our weight would likely stay the same day to day but we don’t. You’ll likely work out what your usual fluctuation cycle is & what affects it. As long as your fluctuation cycles still follow a downward weight loss trend you’re golden.

    No regrets. Coming up on 6 weeks post op. No gerd from my vsg after the revision to bypass. Weight loss satisfactory. Equivalent to the sleeve. I just broke a one week stall, and dropped another 1.8 lbs. What is interesting is I had heard horror stories about "never trust a fart" lol and bowel problems. I almost decided against it but surgeon said I had to fix my gerd... But maybe cause I no longer have severe gerd, everything is literally normal. I feel no difference than before any of my WLS except I get full after a few bites. Having said that, I am early on and hope this positive trend of health continues. I can handle stalls and working to get the weight off but am always scared of leaks and other serious complications down the road. Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app
  13. I've looked through some other past posts, mostly 3-5+ years ago, and Googled to my fingers were numb, so I'm going to post this here and see if anyone has thoughts/suggestions. I'm just about 6-weeks post op, great weight loss, and was cruising right along until last Tuesday 9/7/21. I ended up in the ER for what I thought was a blood clot in my right leg. After a sonar, they assured me I had no clot, but I did have moderate cellulitis. The doctor put me on generic Bactrim 800 2x/day, and Cefalexin 500 x4/day, for 7 days. I have had cellulitis once before pre-op, in the opposite leg, and was on a much smaller treatment of antibiotics (just the Bactrim), and within 3 days (out of the 7 day treatment) it was practically gone! So, when this past Friday rolls around and my right leg isn't better at all I start to freak out b/c it's been 4 days of double the amount of antibiotics I've had for the same issue in the past, and when I put my sock on it still cause me to "yelp" in pain, not to mention the entire shin/left calf in hot and swollen. I call my PCP and he graciously humors me and puts me on the Oral Liquid version of Bactrim, for 10 days b/c I think the tablets aren't being absorbed. So, I've now had 6 doses of the Bactrim Liquid antibiotic, and I'm on my last day of Cefalexin, but really only feel like the leg is maybe, 10-15% better than it was a week ago? I will say that I do not have a fever, so I don't think I'm septic or anything, but it's getting in the way of my exercise and weight loss during the peak period of time when I should be working towards losing as much as possible. Should it still be this bad? Has anyone else had this issue? Any suggestions or things I should talk to my PCP or bariatric surgeon about? Do you think it will just take longer and I should hold my horses and take a chill pill? 😅 Thanks for your time and thoughts everyone. -Josh

I have been focusing on weights also, but have not been doing the free weight lifting that you are, I am still in the process of losing, and weights have really helped keep me from excessive lose skin. It it also helps that I am losing slower. I still do cardio because I need to work on my stamina and it helps my asthma, but weights are my preference.

    Weight can have a 1-5 pound fluctuation on the daily. I was so mad about that last week because at one point I was up 7 pounds (which is over the 5 pound average) and got up to 185 last week. Of course it turns out a lot of that was due to inflammation from my arthritis (and doing physical therapy), but turns out it was also because of my monthly because after that started I got right back down to 178 (178.2 if you want my EXACT weight)... which is what I am today. Still... I've been in a stall for nearly 4 weeks now and I really do hope I'm not in maintenance. I would like to at least see 170 before I get there. I'd say don't stress about the daily fluctuations, but from experience if you continue to hold onto that extra weight more than two days in a row you'll definitely stress about it.

    No weight loss pre-op

    I experienced weight gain pre op and it was because I was mourning the future loss of food. I ate things I shouldn’t because I was worried I would never be able to have them again. I did manage to lose the extra weight really quick on the pre op diet but I probably could have lost more had I not had all the food funerals. One thing that may be helpful in avoiding that is that if there is a food you have an intolerance for post op most likely you will also develop a taste aversion for it so it’s not like you will be craving it and never be able to eat it again. I didn't realize that so I wanted to eat everything I loved one last time before surgery and I packed on the pounds.
  17. I am having such a difficult time loosing weight pre-op is not even funny. Has anyone experienced this phenomenon it can be due to anxiety, bad patterns of eating etc. can you share you experience and how did you overcome it?
  18. My first goal was 180. The last weight I remember when I was social and comfortable enough with my appearance that I went out and did things like bowling league. I just reached 180.7 today!!
  19. So glad I saw this—because this is the route I intend to take. (I already CrossFit, so have a whole bucket list of CF-related things I want to do once my weight isn't the limiting factor.) My coach does also program "functional bodybuilding" which I will be following to try and shore up the (inevitable) loose skin. You both look AH MAY ZING.
  20. I agree with FutureSkyDiver - fat is lost unevenly, and you really can't do much to control it. Exercise is great for you regardless of age. I exercise a lot more that I'm now in my 60s than I have at any other time of my adult life. It not only boosts your weight loss (although as they say, diet is at least 80% of weight loss), but it's great for your overall health.
  21. I have Psoriasis, and I think it exacerbated with the rapid weight loss. I’m just one giant itch with spots all over 🤪 I have been upping my light therapy and that seems to be clearing it - I don’t have Vitamin D issues (due to the light therapy) my dietician was like that’s one of the highest we have seen🤣 My Ferritin was low pre-surgery, it’s higher than it was due to consistently taking my vitamins.

    My weight fluctuates by like 3-5 pounds just in a day on any given day. That’s why I weigh every day and record it everyday but then on surgery day each month I delete everything but that day so I have one weight each month officially logged and I can see the downward trend despite fluctuations.
  23. So I have lost 100lbs, and I am 11 months post op. I still have about 70 lbs. to go to reach my goal weight. No worries there. What I am noticing is that my butt, belly, hips and tummy still seem to have a lot of fattiness to them. I still have that top part of the belly, under the bust, that seems fatty as well. I have a waist, but then I have the belly apron fat. Any tips on how to reduce this? I am not talking about loose skin, and yes that is a part of it, but it seems like it is still carrying some fat. I do not exercise, and was wondering at my age (62), if exercising is going to help at all. I was thinking of trying to do some light aerobics, and some sit ups, etc. Do I need to give it time for my body to loose the rest of the weight? Any thoughts, tips or ideas would be great.

    Also the famous three week stall (not always right at three weeks), glycogen storage (needs lots of Water for the body to store it)… if the scale fluctuations bother you there are a few options… one, just weigh once a week. Do it after your morning bathroom routine so it’s consistent with your daily pattern.. two: if you want to weigh each day take today’s weight and subtract it from your weight seven days prior. This will give you a rolling average of your weekly loss, it’s handy for spotting true stalls / slow downs etc.
