It’s week 5 for me, and I’m having the same problems: can eat very little one day, feel slightly nauseated, but it subsides. Then some days feel great, but still eat vey little. I find it difficult to drink water it makes my stomach feel empty, only protein shakes, yogurt, smooth cool foods are soothing to eat. I find very little delight in eating, even when it’s food I enjoy. I can stomach soups: pea, lentil, chicken, but no more than 4oz at a time. It’s a struggle.

Long story short, my insurance approved my surgery..then 7 days before my surgery they denied it. This happened 2 weeks ago…trying to get over it but still determined to have this surgery. Does anyone who went to Mexico know if it is possible to use any type of financing or anything like that, I say mexico because I know it is about less than half of what it costs here in the US. If anyone has information on financing for here in the United States that would be great as well…about how much would you think someone would need to finance in the US?

I understand. I'll be 3 weeks tomorrow and can't keep down liquids or protein. It's miserable.

Hi all, I started this journey at 252 lbs. Today I am at 197. That is 55lbs. lost in 3.5 months. I am loving that! The main reasons for me getting VSG were: - of course, inability to lose weight on my own -severe joint pain -muscle weakness/fatigue -depression -zero energy I went into this extremely excited that once the lbs started to come off, I would start to feel human again and enjoy life. And for the most part, this is true. However... The above mentioned symptoms were always dismissed by my MD as "just a side effect of your weight". No investigative tests were done to rule out other underlying issues. Now that I have lost a significant amount of weight, I notice that I still have severe pain in my joints, muscle fatigue to point of failure 2-3 times daily, zero energy , and now fevers off and on every few weeks which ends in fever blisters on my lips, etc. I have also developed a new rash on my face, across my nose . Moving on....I went to a new PCP and she ran lots of labs. Turns out, I fit the clinical criteria to a "T" for SLE or otherwise known as systemic lupus. I have been referred to Rheumatology and I see them on Monday. Ive been started on Tramadol for pain, and Ritalin for Adult ADD/Fatigue as well as Ambien for sleep. I refuse to take the Ambien as it makes me feel like a zombie. I guess my whole point in this post is.....what the heck is next? Im feeling little discouraged.

No pre-op diet
HurricaneU replied to FollowingMyPath's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery is scheduled for April 25th. I have to do a 1 week liquid diet the week before, and a clear liquid diet the day before. I'm also starting a low carb, high protein diet on Monday. My nutrionist suggested building up on protein to help my body during recovery. -
Dr. Fielding's Seminar in NYC...
hmarko replied to Jazz_Kat's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi I was banded by Dr Ren.... she spent a lot of time with me in the beginning consult, and came in to see me before and after the surgery. After the surgery - I thought I made an appt with her for the 1 week post op but apparently not - I saw Frank; then I DID make my first fill appt w/ her (there is usually a wait so you can't get any of the surgeons on a week's notice)... but then I screwed up and got the date wrong so they were great and squeezed me in w/ Gaspar, but then i was too tight so Frank unfilled me. AFTER this I had questions for the Dr and I called the office and spoke to Christina the nurse and she did go and ask Dr Ren my questions and came back to me. The office told me dr ren likes to do the first fill..... I'll see her for the second fill. In any case I find the staff very accessible via emails - nurses, nilsa who schedules the surgeries, nutritionists etc. My internist recommended NYU and Dr Ren - they are known for their excellent aftercare. And I have to say everything knock wood went without a hitch - my recovery was quick, i had little pain - I was back to work in 4 days, the day of surgery i was alert and walking fine, no nausea, it was a great process for me and I have to think part of this has to do with the skill of the surgeon and the surgical team. And I do mean team - my friend who came with me was impressed she said I had a whole team assigned to me and they were all outside my door talking about me. I must have met 10 people the day of the surgery each had a role  Also if you do the surgery there and they are still doing the anti nausea med research for the surgery I recommend it (aloxi OR aloxi w/ dexamethasone - not sure which i got). I had zero nausea whatsover from the anesthesia and never was dizzy or anything I think it had to do w/ this trial drug they gave me. I had a HORRIBLE experience w/ broken nose surgery from the anesthesia so i jumped on the trial anything to not relive that. I am happy with the practice.... it IS very busy though. -

Then 1 week out, I had to switch to full liquid diet. 2 days out (tomorrow) I have to go Clear liquids. I can't drink anything until Friday morning when they do the leak test. Don't know what I'm going to do. GOOD LUCK on your surgery!! -

I have a few questions as I get closer to my surgery next week. I am getting the surgery w/Dr. Aceves so especially those who know about his practices would be especially helpful: *Does he use drains? If so when do they come out? *Do I need to have an appointment at home to remove my stiches? * I have support group aftercare arranged, but what medical aftercare will I need to arrange? This is all so exciting/scary and having some more answers would really help. Thank you, Anna

7 days post op and feeling down/ tearful
LiggleLiggle replied to sgray's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I experienced the same thung at about the same time. I think it is hormonal. The good news, it passes. I am still in the troughs of aftershockat almost 6 weeks so it takes lots of time AND patience. -
Aww, I'm sorry. I was denied at first also. I never had to deal with insurance though. From day 1, my doctor said all he has to do is write them a letter detailing why I needed to convert and he thought I would be approved. I received a letter saying that I wasn't, that they needed more information. My doctor also received the letter as I was blind copied. He automatically sent them my whole chart showing all of my past visits from my lap band. A few weeks later, I was approved! Good luck!

anyone else over 60 having or have had the sleeve surgery
Shustar replied to Durlinda's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had my surgery on June 8th in Tijuana, Mexico. Drove myself from Scottsdale to San Diege (aprox 6 hours). Had surgery on Mon. Released from hospital Wed morning. Left Mexico on Fri. morning and drove myself home with absolutely no pain or even mild discomfort. Went back to work on Sat. I went back to playing tennis 3 weeks after surgery and only wish I did it sooner! Acid Reflux is an almost guarantee due to the small size of our stomach. My Dr started us on Prolosec 3 days after surgery. Other than that, I am not bothered by it at all! Good luck! -
January 24th Sleevers? Let’s prep together!
Ja1luv4life replied to wendybird's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I’m in Washington my surgery is on the 24th as well. My pre op as been going well. Protein shakes and one meal a day. Have protein and veggies with legumes. I prepare my meals for the week on Sunday mostly fish because I don’t eat meat. How’s yours going? “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” -
I also take 2 children's multi with Iron (my nutritionist wants me to take an adult chewable like I was before surgery, but I told her I had to finish this bottle of children's...they just seem easier to chew). I take 1,200 mg of calcium citrate chewy bites, and based on my pre-op lab work, 10,000 IU's of Vitamin D since I am deficient. I haven't actually taken all of the Vitamin D since surgery. I take a chewable form of it that gets me to about 3,000 IU's. I bought the Bariatric Advantage Vitamin D that you are supposed to swallow and it should dissolve before hitting your stomach, but I've been too afraid to take it. My goal is to start this next week.

I was told by the dietician to take a multi vitamin (two of my kid's gummie vitamins are fine) and 1500 mg of calcium citrate every day. I take the chewable calcium citrate now but will hopefully progress to the Citracal Petites (smaller tablets and easier to swallow) in a few weeks.

Newbie Sleeve Done 11/27
AngelEyesInNJ replied to deedeemuffin's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Water was very hard for me I had to stop ( my doc said its normal a lot of people have trouble with water) and I drink Powerade zero or gateorade. I was told not to worry about getting my Protein in the first week but just try to get fluids in to keep hydrated. You may also want to try pedialyte popcicles they were my savior! I am a little over 3 weeks out now and still have them since I do not get all my fluids in. As for walking.. to be honest I stopped after I got home which was i think 5 days after surgery and I mainly walked because of the gas pains but they were gone in about 2 days. Are you able to check with your doctor to see what he/she recommends? -
Since much is required, does the sleeve just *help*?
DonnaMarie28 replied to lylabelle's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi I'm 8 wks post op as of yesterday. I still get hungry but when I eat a few bites I'm full. It is definitely worth it but not as easy as I thought. I thought the weight would fall off but that is not the case. You definitely still have to work at it. I fight everyday to try to increase my water intake. Right now I'm getting between 42-48 ounces including my 2 shakes a day. I have nausea every morning and on and off through out the day but I just started normal food so I think that is why. It is tolerable. I have no regrets at all and an so happy with my decision To get the sleeve!! I'm in a stall right now. I lost 25 pounds so far in 8 wks which sounds like a lot but I have been the weight for 2 wks. Today I lost one pound. I was walking before but now joined a gym 3 day a wk. as for work after 1 wk, I took 3 wks off, I had issues with my inner sutures being tied to tight and had I wait for them to pop. It was uncomfortable sitting after awhile so as long as you can get up and walk around a little bit you should be fine! Good luck and it is the best thing I did for myself!!! -
I have had type 2 diabetes for over 20 years. I was taking 4 different medications to control it, including very high doses of insulin. My surgeon told me straight off that it was very likely because of the length of time I have had diabetes and amount of medications I took that I would still need some medication after surgery. I am only 3 weeks postoperative now, I am still taking one pill a day and some meal time insulin. It is likely that once closer to my goal weight I will be able to decrease or even eliminate these meds, but it is a process and only time will tell. Sent from my HTC D816h using the BariatricPal App

I Was All Ready To Go...now Scared And Confused.
DanityChai posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I need some advice and to vent a little. I am scheduled with Dr. Aceves for sleeve revision on May 10th. I have researched the hell out of him and have found nothing bad at all. Part of the prerequisite was for me to get my band unfilled. This past weekend I had my appointment with my American bariatric surgeon (who did not place my lap-band) and he unfilled me. He asked why I was getting unfilled and I told him I was having revision in Mexico with Dr. Aceves. He then proceeded to scare the **** out of me by telling me stories of patients he has known of who have had leaks months afterward from getting surgery in Mexico and/or dying on the OR table. He said getting a virgin sleeve or lap-band is fine in Mexico but begged and pleaded with me not to get a revision. He said that it is incredibly risky and dangerous and that I will be screwed if something happens to me once I get home. I talked to him about it more and he said that since the doc is not looking at my lap band beforehand that ought to give me a clue that I am not in good hands. He said they will just work around any complications and that could make it worse. He also said he could do my revision (here in the US) for the same price as Dr. Aceves is charging me. I completely agreed to all of this and have been talking to his office and scheduler. It has been three days and I am still waiting to hear from them on what hospital he will perform the surgery at and exactly how much. It will be one of three hospitals in the LA area. Anyhow, I am not sure what to do. I am pretty sure Dr. Aceves has more experience with revisions than my doc does but the thought of staying in the US for the same price is tempting as well. I know Dr. Aceves is a truly capable and fantastic doctor. I have read a lot of reviews on my US doc and he is very good as well. I don't think he has the experience that Aceves does though but on the flip side I could stay in the US. HELP!!! ADVICE PLEASE!!! So scared and confused now. -
That is a wonderful loss in three months. Did you go to Atlanta Baratrics? It is the best thing and I feel like a new human being! Good luck!
