    May Sleevers...where are you?

Congrats to all of you that have gotten your surgery date! That is so exciting! It is nice to have this support group to share the journey. We can share our fears, our experiences and thoughts as we go along the journey. Matthew282, here in Delaware, we are required to be on the 2-week liquid diet for some reason. They say that the insurance companies are now requiring it. I am having a revision from band to sleeve. I was banded in 2008 and wasn't required to do any type of pre-surgery diet, so it's all new for me too. I start tomorrow. I'm sure I'll be on here looking for support!! =) We can do this! Here's to a healthier, more active life!
  2. I can really hear the frustration in your post. I am also a lap-band revision and I only had 60 pounds to lose when I started. I really got the sleeve as an insurance policy - I knew without the band that my weight would sky-rocket and I needed something to prevent it. It must suck to hear about people eating a couple bites and that's it. Eating 6 oz is still not a lot of food, especially compared to pre-lapband days. Over time, that should have a good affect on your weight. Congrats on being below your 250 target! Just be patient with yourself. If you need to take a break from the board, that's understandable - but come back and see us sometime!! Best of luck to you - keep your head up!! Lara
  3. Jessie-It's good to hear from you, but unfortunate for the circumstances! I hope the barium swallow shows that your slip doesn't require surgery, but merely an unfill. I went through the same thing and had to have revision surgery. My thoughts are with you.
  4. Wow, Little Miss Diva. This post of yours really spoke to me. I could have written most of it. Hunger has always been my biggest problem and when I was young and thin I used to eat a lot to feel satisfed but I didn't gain weight and I didn't think about food. Hungry? Eat until not hungry then don't think about food. But that all changed as I started to put on a few pounds. Went to my first WW meeting weighing 136 pounds at 5'6". And when I started dieting I put on over 120 lbs the next 30 years. I am currently banded and it has never worked for me. I have been banded for 2 1/2 years. I have a 4cc band. At no fill level from zero to 3cc did it ever stop me from being hungry. At 3cc's I had pain, pressure, reflux and heartburn and my former surgeon blamed me. But an upper GI showed I was too tight. I got all my information and went for a second opinion to my current doctor who told me I had a 4cc band (my former surgeon told me it was a 10cc). Like you, any weight I lost was through the 6 month pre-op and the 2 week liquid only diet both pre and post op. I was starving. All of this resulted in a loss of 60 lbs. and I only lost 15 pounds since then. So, 75 lbs and most of it was from starving and willpower. I exercise every day and eat healthy but I am always hungry. I am totally unfilled now due to a very bad stuck episode a year ago that resulted in a trip to the ER and overnight stay. It hurt so bad I couldn't speak and felt like I was shot. I am 60 years old and I think I am too old to get a revision but when I read the experience of those who went from band to sleeve it sounds like everything I thought the band would be but isn't. I thought it would control my hunger and I could just eat small quantities of healthy food and exercise and I would lose weight and not have to think about food all the time and struggle. I fear putting on weight and am so tired of being hungry. I don't know what to do since insurance doesn't pay for the sleeve and I can't afford it as of yet. I don't think they'd do it on someone my age, anyway. Would they? I am getting criticized and insulted on LBT because I don't like it when people post harsh comments to struggling posters. Or tell them that they failed the band not the other way around. Or tell the truth about my band experience. Did you get that? I'm not sure what to do at this point. Any suggestions?

    Another one bites the dust

OMG I could have written most of that! I soooo relate to knowing the inside of every toilet in every restaurant. I was on liquids for 4 months before I finally couldn't take it anymore and revised to a sleeve. I have to say, even with great follow up care (I had very good follow up care) I don't think the band is going to last anywhere near a lifetime in anyone. (

    Another one bites the dust

DVJ22, I had my band out for about 8 months before I revised and don't remember a lot of gas. I do remember feeling the food/drinks going down to a much longer stomach and than before and remembering how weird that felt after 14 months with the band. Anyway sorry you had so many issues I always worry about you self payers as there can always be comps that make things financially difficult. Anyway hope you're feeling better now and take care, Nancy.

    Hunger

Hi there. I haven’t been on this forum for a while. Everything that you’re feeling is normal I’m right there with you. I had revision surgery six months ago due to severe Gerd and I can tell you that I am not hungry and I eat because I need to or I’m bored. I have a delayed sense of fullness but is nothing like the sleeve. My surgery was in May and it took months before I even felt that. I do have to be careful because once the fullness does hit is miserable. Even then it is nothing like the restriction that I felt from my sleeve. The valve is gone so it’s all about receptors at this point . Keep watching your portions you know what you need to consume get your protein and eat some veggies and drinking water . I was never hungry with my sleeve either. I hope that helped.

    Any June Sleevers?

I am a band to sleeve revision as well.
  9. Well you could say your Gall Bladder stump revised. Me , sometimes I can be goofy or a prankster- my last off the wall one I'M HAVING THOSE BUTTERFLIES IN MY STOMACH REMOVED- I can get away with it pretty good, because when you're over 70 who really knows what's in there? Of course I really should have used something like that in 2018 when I Did Have mine. Hindsight is 20/20, you know, but I was so durned glad to receive IT. I simply forgot to be flippant. And that's the TRUTH.
  10. I’m glad I found your post! Hoping for an update from you! I had a sleeve in 2020, but have had a tremendous amount of issues unfortunately. Had my gallbladder out since, and have horrid GERD. My surgeon does want to do a revision, but today I found out I have a HH, but I never had one before my sleeve. Annoying! My insurance requires a waiting period and I’m like really?! I’m miserable!
  11. I am 2 days out of Sleeve to RNY revision. Is the following normal? - my intestines are super loud. When I drink I feel it in my lower abdomen l?! - Warning: this May be too graphic, but I’ve had diarrhea through out the day. Went 5 times :/ not much but still watery. Is this normal ? 3. I was doing do so well with gas, walking a bunch etc with minimal pain, but this evening of day 2, all of a sudden I have a ton of chest gas. So much that I can’t sleep reclining and I can’t use my cpap as it’s blowing air which I feel is adding to the pressure...
  12. 6 Week Post Op Doctor visit Results All, I went to visit my doc yesterday. Here are my Stats Prep Op 271 Op day 257 (lost 14lb on my own) 6 weeks out: 238 (33lb lost overall and 19lb since surgery) Here are some high level notes from what I remember: - He was super happy with my results, especially as a revision (10lb in the last month since I last saw him) - I told him I went Vegan, he said GREAT!!! And that that was the healthiest thing I could do (I was expecting him to scold me for not doing an Egg for breakfast, but he loved that I was doing a Green Smoothie instead, and said that I will be able to avoid many deficiencies this way. He said he wished more of his patients will follow this plan but the thought of it would be too off putting for most. - I asked if I needed to see a nutritionist and he said no...you're doing all the right things (woa?) - I asked him if there was a Macro Nutrient limit he wanted me to work with: Calories, Protein, Carb, Fat etc? His answer was NO! Keep doing what you are doing, and live life. Don't worry about tracking each macronutrient or even what you eat, listen to your body, continue eating healthy and don't stress about the numbers. In his words "you're not on a diet, this is just your new eating plan" So essentially he absorbed me of food tracking (so...I ditched my app for now anyways). If I stall for long or have issues, I may track again, but gosh, I've got so much time back in my day from not tracking. To his point too, it's no way to live. I'm about to head out to England for work (in 2 weeks), I would not easily be able to calculate stuff there, I'll have to eyeball and learn to manage it. which brings me to my next point. - I've been cleared to travel, so I'm super SUPER nervous, what if I'm sick trans-atlantic, what if I take ill there and they don't know what to do with me...what if I get sick our naucious in front of clients (today I over did Edamame Pods, and out they came)... To mitigate my fears, I got a Portable Scale on Amazon, and I will travel with it so I can stay honest. - He stressed that a daily dose of 50g B1 was vital (My Bari multi has only 20, so I need to supplement that). - He cleared me for all forms of workouts so yesterday I hit the weights, and I finally did some serious Stomach crunches. Felt good to exercise those muscles nicely! - He patted me on the back and assured me I was doing awesome. And that's about it. Not at ALL how I expected my visit to go! I expected to be scolded on Vegan choice, schooled to do more animal flesh protein, a visit with Nutritionist, him ordering a bunch of tests to check my levels of stuff etc etc. Nothing like that...go figure... Anywho, hopefully this was helpful to you. I love to read about other peoples accounts of their doctors visits.

  14. Oh my gosh, thank you all for such amazing support! Hearing the word "inspiration" makes me so happy because for so long, I looked on this website/app researching and reading success stories and was never really sure if I could do it like those people. As for your revision, I'm sure that can be quite scary worrying that you won't lose the weight, keep it off, etc... BUT, you have to think positively! The minute I got my surgery date, I found this newfound hope that I had never had before! I've lost crazy amounts of weight over the years but could never sustain the weight loss, but with the sleeve, it is like HEAVEN! I can now eat anything (I don't obviously, but it doesn't make me sick if I have a bite of something, however, I get full after just a few bites. Perfect example: sushi is my favorite food. After surgery, I felt like I was going to have to give it up for forever! I used to be able to eat 3-4 rolls just by myself... That's like 24-30 pieces!!! Now, I can't eat more than 2 pieces of sushi and I feel the same fullness as I would have before surgery! Best of luck to each of you who has a surgery date, waiting for one, or those post-op like myself! I posted a pic earlier, but will post it on this thread in case anyone is interested!

    Why sleeve and not bypass?

@@drmeow I hope your sleeve ultimately works out for you. It must have been very disappointing to go through all that and still not end up with the procedure you wanted. I suppose if it doesn't work out, a revision to bypass is always possible, though you obviously can never get that 80% of your stomach back. I think that if you are diligent and focus on making the most of your sleeve, it can work for you. All the best!
  16. Right after my surgery in Feb 2015, I felt great. I had a little bit of anxiety about a month later as the weight loss slowed down and that feeling recurred several times as the weight plateaued for a few days over the course of the following several months. At the sixth month point in August, I was very happy with the progress. I had reached a weight that I was satisfied with. Then in mid August, I had a bowel obstruction which required a resection and revision of the gastric bypass and ended up in the hospital for three weeks. Since then, I've had three additional partial obstructions which resolved without surgery. It has been a roller coaster ride since August and I have sunk into depression. Or rather the underlying depression which always seems to be there, came to the surface. I'm back on psych meds. I do not regret having had the surgery. I'm in a much better place and can do so much more than I had ever done before. I have a positive and hopeful outlook for the future, at least when the symptoms of the depression aren't weighing me down. I think overall the feelings you feel will be all over the place and will depend on your physiology, history, progress, situation, and outlook. The best thing I've found to do is to live each day as it comes.

    Throwing up

I had a similar problem. This was about 7-8 yrs. after a revision. Ended up having surgery for a hiatal hernia. Showed most of my anatomy (gastric pouch) was above the diaphrahm. Anyway, it solved the problem.
  18. Hello Friends! I had a lap band done years ago and have a ticker here showing that and my status as lap band patient. I now have had the revision from lap band to bypass and would like to add a new ticker and change my patient status. Can anyone give me the directions on how to change all this? I can't find it anywhere and don't remember how I did it 14 years ago! If anyone from Bariatric Pal sees this, please include an instructional section to the website. Thanks!

    Sex & the Band....

Not to be too graphic, but I just found out I need a port revision. My port flipped...and I think it was a wild night that may have flipped it!! Maybe not, but that's the only time I have been aware of "feeling" my port since I had the surgery. So if something feels uncomfortable, stop and try something different!!
  20. GmaDiana Thanks for the response! So you've not had any issues then? That's great. Where were you weight/health wise before you had the revision? Was anything different eating wise afterward? The Dr. said my pouch might be much smaller... Thanks Bearhugs for the words of encouragement!
  21. Ortego07, thank you for your reply! I'm having problems responding directly to responses. How far into your sleeve were you when you had your revision? Also did you lose more weight? How long were you off work? What about hospital stay? Sorry for all the questions! Thanks Ren Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    UK Sleevers

Hi Jane, I'm having my sleeve surgery on July 13th. I am having revision surgery from a slipped band...Just a few questions which i haven't been able to find the answers to so far - How long does the surgery take? I will probably be having open surgery as I only had an operation last year but I guess the operation duration will be similar to laparoscopic won't it? What sort of pain can I expect (don't worry about telling me it all!) and will I be on my feet straight afterwards? Were you tested for leakage in any way before you left hospital? I could do with a step-by-step guide of everything to expect including my diet afterwards etc.! Many thanks for you help and hope you are doing well. Helenxxx

How long did your surgery take?

My revision, band removal and VGS, took 2 hours
  25. It's totally normal (it happens to almost all of us) to stall between weeks 3 and 5 post-op. I'm also seeing a trend of stalling again around month 5. Most of the March 2017 sleevers I know report stalling about 5 months out. It's true that revision patients lose slower -- I made a very conscious decision to throw everything I have at losing wait in the first six months. I started exercising (walking) 2 weeks post-op. At month 5, I'm doing cardio (elliptical) 4x a week, weight training 4x a week and doing yoga 2x a week. My calories are hovering between 800 and 1000 a day. As my weight loss has started to slow a bit, I've just started experimenting with Intermittent Fasting. I figure the harder I work during the "honeymoon" phase, the more likely it is that I'll have good habits to sustain me as I approach goal and maintenance.
