  1. I had my MGB revision from a band on June 10. No regrets but my weight loss has been slow. I am 10 weeks out and lost 28 pounds. Happy they have gone but I still have 60 to lose to be in a normal BMI. Weight loss settled lretty quickly to 2 pounds a week or less. I am pretty good at sticking to the rules, I only had 2 head hunger days out of over 50 where my cals went up to 1400 but most days I am between 750 and a 1000. I have been able to eat more than a lot of bypassers right from the get go, there is restriction and I do not push it. Only had a couple of cases of dumping from fats, but I often need to sleep after a meal even if it's relatively low sugar. A lot of fatigue. food wise I can eat juts about everything unless too fibrous like sweetcorn. Beef, steak, chicken all fine. I try to stick to the harder Proteins as much as possible as they are the only things that give me restriction. There is research that says second hitters don't get as much bang for the buck but that does not affect everyone. Muts unlucky I guess it will be a long road for me. One caveat, I am not as mobile as I should be as waiting for a hip replacement though I am comparing to the first few months of having a band when I was also pretty immobile for other reasons. Still no regrets.

    Band has to come out

@@zoe4533 I'm so sorry to hear this! So, it sounds like you can elect for a revision surgery or just do things on your own. What do you want to do? Lots of people in your situation convert to a sleeve without any major complications...and tend to lose the weight quicker.
  3. I had my revision from band to sleeve on 8/10. The gas pain is no joke. I expected it as I remembered what I went thru with the band. This is worse. I just keep walking, breathing, and sipping as the pain meds MIGHT take the edge off. I'm in Richmond.
  4. I am still undecided because this band is making my life a living hell...revision must happen either way.

    I'm afraid!

@@ericaacire I had the exact same experience as you. I had my heart set on the sleeve and was told and shown all the data on revisions because of redux/Gerd. I had a little more time than you so I ended up going to see another gastroenterologist for a second opinion. My fear had everything to do with the idea that bypass might be more invasive and the malabsorption concerns. Everyone tried scaring me out of moving forward. My bariatric specialist asked me the following questions: 1. Why do you have the opinion that bypass is more invasive that sleeve. I responded be caused of the rerouting. She reminded me that to remove 85 percent is very invasive. Bypass is the gold standard of WLS. People who go thru the sleeve and suffer from Gerd after usually end up revising to bypass. Bypass is in fact reversible. Once your stomach is gone, you cannot get it back. 2. What about the malabsorption scares you, after all it is designed to help you lose more weight. I responded with some of the horror stories about people who didn't get their proper Vitamins. She educated me about why malabsorption is a good thing and as long as I take my supplements: multi Vitamin, Calcium, Vitamin D and B12 and follow up with labs to check progress, I won't have any problems. By the way, with the band and the sleeve you have to take supplements and go have labs regularly as well. After that one session with her and lots of time on line, I was feeling so much better about having WLS overall. I got excited, I was not scared any longer and I knew my success was completely up to me. By the way, I have not had 1 episode of reflux nor have I had to take any meds for it since 30 days post op, no more type 2 diabetes, no more high cholesterol, no more high blood pressure, no more sleep apnea, and last but the most important, no more stage 3 kidney disease. Don't be afraid, do some research if you need to. See if you can get in sooner and talk to a bariatrician if you are worried. You have worked way too hard to get to this place and you have to already know that the diet yo yo thing will only cost you more time lost down the road. Haven't you been there already?
  6. I am a first grade teacher. Had revision band to sleeve on 7/28/15. Went back to in service on 8/7. Students came 8/12. In service wasn't too bad, first 3 days of school were rough, but made it. Yesterday, Monday 8/17, felt best ever. Wish I had waited 3 weeks instead of two, but like you hated to miss the days. Today I am tired, but not extraordinarily so. Haven't weighed since my one week post op visit where I had lost almost 20 lb. since surgery. Started at 277, weighed 258 at 1 week checkup.

Who, and when, to tell about surgery?

I've told my closest friends and family , but very few people at work. I had the revision from band to sleeve 4 weeks ago. So far so good. Today, after a pretty stressful day at work, when walking out, I was commiserating with a colleague who doesn't know. Her advice was to go home, have some chips and salsa and a glass of wine and everything would be better. I guess that's what I get for not telling people. I just laughed it off and said maybe I'll play with the dogs instead!

Get a revision.....I am messed up from the lapband.Had it for 10 years..seeking a revision

    I'm afraid!

I had the sleeve 3 years ago. I have to have revision due to Gerd plus a couple other sleeve complications. I honestly wish I had opted for RNY initially. I must admit I am more anxious about having revision surgery than my initial procedure. I know many successful RNY'ers!

    Reflux sucks

The lapband is a problem...I was at the ER,seeing a gastro...endoscopy,barium swallow etc.Iam miserable...I want a revision to lap band To sleeve or bypass....
  11. My surgeon's practice still does bands. I originally chose the band because it was reversible if there were any complications. It worked fine for the first two years and then I started not being able to get adjusted with the fills in the green zone. I was throwing up everything I tried to eat - even the slider foods and liquids. I said I wanted a revision to the sleeve and my surgeon said okay. I never had to pay for fills. The insurance company approved them a year at a time one a month.

    Sleeve vs Gastric

I am a revision from the lap band. I chose sleeve because I didn't want to have my intestines rerouted and I already have malabsorption problems from Celiac disease. I didn't want to exacerbate them.
  13. I had that same concern worry - as a revision from band patient I really thought about this! What I have to honestly say is that even in 2001 there were "early warning signs" that all was not well with the band. I lived in Europe where the band was already being done alot and while I didn't have any local support, I did belong to a yahoo group. My first clue was that there was a general list and then there was a "secret" list where the veterans posted. Once i hit the one year mark, with very limited success and was permitted in the veterans area I came to realize how many people where having complications and very commonly not losing as much weight as they wanted. As most people do pretty well at first with the band - the complications tend to increase over time, the general forum gave a very narrow view of the band experience. There was also a great deal of shaming on that particular website. I had alot of trouble with vomiting more than I should have but there was a culture of blaming/shaming the patient so I never really got the counseling/advice/help I needed to manage the band better. At that time the stock answer "can't help you if you aren't compliant". I would be thinking "compliant with what? what can I eat that won't get stuck and make me vomit and embarrased?" but instead would keep my mouth shut and try to do better - without really knowing "how to do better" At that time, there was less understanding about managing the right level of fill and lots of people had to travel for fills/unfills at great cost, including me, and so often lived with too tight of bands which led to oh so many problems. Well, in truth, my first first first clue should have been pre-op was when my surgeon had me sign a document acknowledging that the band should be considered temporary and would most likely require removal with risk of significant weight gain. I had put on such rose colored glasses I didn't even remember signing that until I went through my paperwork in preparing for my revision to sleeve. With the sleeve, I was looking for all the bad things - and surely found them (risk of leaks, etc etc) - but so far (will be 4 years in Dec) things have worked out as expected, or really better than expected and I feel like more was understood/ widely known about the sleeve in 2011 than was generally acknowledged about the band in 2001.

I am getting a revision..I have indigestion....going to see an gastro to see what is going on as a result of this band...it has caused me a lot of damage.i am also a breast cancer survivor..,.if the sleeve ain't right ...bring on the bypass...either or.....get it done!!!!

    Worried about regrets

Like many, i had severe doubts preop. In fact, I spent a miserable year wrestling with the decision to revise from my failed band to the sleeve. I was so sure I would fail... AGAIN. I also feared having horrible complications (like I did with the band) only in the case of the sleeve, removal is not an solution. I was scared I was sentencing myself to a life of obese hell. Turns out to have been an amazingly good decision and thankfully no horrible complications. In fact, a sleevie stomach feels like a normal/why didn't I have this stomach all along type thing. I will be 4 years from my sleeve in Dec this year and I feel like I saved my life with this decision! When I read your original post and then this reply, I was thinking your deeper fear is of changing into a person you don't recognize/want to be? I am not sure, but if that is the case, I strongly recommend DEALING with those feelings not pushing them away. My reasoning is that it is pretty easy to lose weight the first 6-18 months, the "honeymoon" period. You are light enough you are even quite likely to make it to goal before having to deal with this.... but it is very easy to self sabatoge once your appetite and eating capacity "stablize" at your new normal. Yes, it is NORMAL for us to be able to eat more and often to have desire to eat more a few years out. If you have emotional doubts about it, might make that more complex. i have NO emotional doubts and I work pretty hard at maintenance at this point. I was a morbidly obese person for a long time and my body definately wants to return to that state due to the "disease process" and so I have to stay focused even now to stay trim. Only you can answer this - no need to reply to me, but I think listening to that inner voice and deciding if it is a real concern or just normal nerves is important.
  16. The conversation becomes relevant as people get further out from surgery. I have a good friend who is eight years out from lapband - a seasoned veteran by the standards of Bariatric Pal. She's about 30 pounds away from ideal weight and her band just slipped. And she went unfilled for several weeks. There are options of revision, using medications to jump start weight loss as her band probably has good life left. As we continue to fight obesity, the challenges and conversations do change. Weight loss meds could be back on the table.
  17. As a revision patient who gained the weight back I say the fear is good!!!
  18. Hi i was banded in 2010 and I lost 88 lbs but gained most of it back as the band failed and it was finally removed in Aug 2014. In Oct 2014 i was revised to vertical sleeve gastrectomy and i have lost 148 lbs and i still have a fair bit to go but best thing is, weight is coming off! VSG has been the best thing i have ever done for my health and wellbeing. Best wishes to you on your journey.

Any Band to Sleeve Success Stories Out There?!?

I was banded in Feb 2012 and lost 25lbs and then gained about 100. I did revision on 7/1/2015 and Dow 30lbs. I had minimal scar tissue so revision was easy the doctor shared. Wish I did this surgery the first go round!!

Band to Sleeve and other questions!

UGH what is with the mean nurses?! I love Nurse Kim she is awesome - and also she is banded so she understands the struggle. I'm hoping that I will be able to convert to the sleeve early next year. I have to go through the program and then insurance will hopefully approve the revision. Meanwhile I think I'll be getting my gallbladder out pretty soon I don't think it will wait much longer!
  21. It's good to see so many are successful with band to sleeve revision. I need a bit more consistency for myself. The band does what the band wants as we know. Too tight one day, not enough the next, etc etc. I'm honestly tired of fighting it! Well I have to fight it for several more months but hopefully early next year I can get rid of it and I'll have the sleeve

    Cash Pay - Revision Cost

I don't know any current U.S. pricing, but as of last spring, my bariatric surgeon in Mexico was advertising revision surgery starting at $7200. Hopefully that gives you some kind of idea.

    GERD a problem for anyone?

I'm one of the ones who is in the process of revising from sleeve to bypass. I developed terrible GERD post op and recently found out that I also developed Barrett's Esophagus. I don't think this is a common occurrence, but GERD is definitely something I'd take into consideration if I already had it pre op. I couldn't have know this would happen and think the sleeve is a great procedure for a lot of people. No regrets from me, but talk to your doctor about your concerns. They will have the best recommendations.

    GERD a problem for anyone?

I have reflux because of this darn lapband.I want a revision to the sleeve....hopefully it is manageable .
  25. Hey there! I am 5 weeks out from a gastric bypass revision and am feeling incredibly frustrated. I am following my surgeon's directions to the letter (60 grams of protein per day); drinking at least 80 ounces of water every day; and walking 5-6 miles every day. For the past 2.5 weeks, I have not lost so much as an ounce. I met with the dietician from the surgery group who only confused me and contradicted all the written information is been given pre- and post-surgery. I left his office in tears of frustration last week because I don't understand how I could be doing everything right (by the guidelines given to me), having a caloric intake of less than 600 calories per day, exercising and drinking lots of water and seeing no progress. I'm going to call the doctor's office tomorrow to see if I can meet with someone else to discuss my concerns. At this point I regret having the surgery and am feeling very lost, sad, and frustrated. Any words of wisdom for me?
