Taking vitamins makes me nauseous!
Flutterfly replied to EmmyJ's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My last post op appointment we discussed vitamins and I had a bottle of Bariatric Fusion (what I currently take) and a bottle of Barimelts. Doc didn't like the Barimelts, said not enough of what I need in it. My current regiment looks like this; 2 Bariatric Fusion multis (mixed berry, while not great is the least offensive tasting) and I take a Barimelt Biotin in the am with them. Then after 2 hours I take my first Bariatric Advantage Calcium Citrate Chewy Bite. I actually love these in caramel. I take 3 a day total, each two hours apart. Followed by another 2 of the Bariatric Fusion Multis two hours after my last calcium citrate. I take a barimelts iron+vitamin C every 3-4 days. Some days when the multis hit my pouch I get some nausea. I find taking them and then sipping a hot beverage like tea seems to make this subside quickly. I have been told Gummi's aren't for anyone who has had RNY, nor are flintstones. -
[emoji848] BariatricPal Team MX
ChiakiAngel replied to MJP820's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am also going though Bariatric Pal MX. My surgery is booked for November 7th! I was initially going through another company but found them through my research and I can't tell you happy I am. They are so responsive, the facebook group is amazing, and the support you receive from fellow patients and the staff is great. I'm flying out of Canada on the 6th, the night before my surgery and I can't be more excited. -
Looking for someone with similarities

Thanks for the reply Brightfaith I have worked with a bariatric nutritionist for almost a year now. I have met my surgeon. I am currently in therapy for the binge eating and once they sign off then it will be up to the insurance. So far insurance has given me all the hoops I have to jump through before they’ll give me an answer. -

Hi SLT, how far along are you in the process. I will be having gastric bypass but am early in the process — I’ve started the 6-month supervised nutrition program and am beginning to get medical clearances. I don’t expect to have surgery until May or so. I am also in therapy for depression and binge eating disorder. What I am finding helpful is a mindfulness-based approach to eating. The book “Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat for Binge Eating” by Michelle May has been very helpful, and there is a companion workbook for people who are planning to have or who have had bariatric surgery. I haven’t binged for a long while and have eaten when not physically hungry just twice in the last two months, which is really good progress for me. I’m using this time to really work on mindfulness and meditation and prepare for the surgery. You may be looking for a veteran, but let me know if I can be helpful in any way. I know binge eating and overeating are difficult challenges, and the surgery and pre-op diets can be bingeing triggers. -
Hi Zoxie and Angy, I am new to the forum and have surgery scheduled for 11/17. My preop diet will be clear liquids and protein shakes for two weeks. I am doing a trial run this weekend before my edg. I have a demanding schedule as I am sure most do, so I am also trying bariatric products I ordered from Bariatric Pal and Amazon. I can’t do whey protein, so I am doing Bariatric Choice liquid protein, Bariatric Advantage protein gelatin, Gene Pro flavorless protein, broth, sugar free jello, sugar free popsicles, apple juice, and water to keep my energy level up. I have also ordered B12 patches for preop to go along with multivitamin patches for post op. Naps help. I also read and saw on YouTube to take lip balm to the hospital. My hospital allows GasX strips or melts. Good luck to all! I hope we find great success and an easy recovery.

Yes I am!! I started looking into VSG about 4 weeks ago, I went to a Bariatric specialist here in NC for an initial consult (incl. blood test and pee test!). They also went through all my paperwork and explained what my insurance covered. Long story short, my insurance only covers 50% (max OOP is $6350 + the $50 specialist copay on each visit), has a 4 month wait period with a stipulation that I cannot gain weight. Not too bad I suppose... (however my BF was looking into surgery too but his wait time is 12 months!! Which he is not happy about but his max OOP is only $800 lucky him!)....but after considering the fact that the specialist was an 8-hour round trip drive away, calculating all expenses, the wait period for both myself and the BF, the amount of days lost from work before the actual surgery due to specialist visits, and after more thought and research, I've come to the conclusion that Mexico is going to be the most convenient and cheapest option. Next step was researching who in Mexico! What really "sealed the deal" for me was seeing several posts on here about BatritricPal Team MX (patient reviews, videos, the new hospital, safe and easy payment before surgery). So I clicked on the link to their website, researched on YouTube and their Facebook page... reached out to them, completed the questionnaire and within 48 hours received approval for surgery! Now I am just figuring out dates... looks like January 9th is going to be my date but haven't booked anything just yet!! So after my slightly long winded answer ..lol.. yes I am totally going with BARIATRICPAL Team MX 🤗 -
Guess what I said was not clear. The vitamins came in a clearly marked box from one of the bariatric sources. I took all the vitamins out, which were packaged 3 chewable tabs in a plain white package, so they'd fit into my drawer. So after throwing the original box away I don't know the company I ordered them from. Believe me I would never take unmarked meds! Yikes.

Great news I want to share: Bariatric Advantage's rep, Jason, gave me my Multi EA chewable vitamins (60 ct), Calcium Citrate chewy 500s (90 ct), and two protein shakes to try, for FREE! I sent him an email about my predicament and he did this, as well as gave me options for different multi vitamins and calcium citrate to use. I appreciate everyone giving me input on vitamins & supplements. Thank you so much. I think people should be recognized & applauded for their compassion & good deeds. I have nothing to gain from giving anyone his info: Jason Schmidt; j.schmidt@bariatricadvantage.com; (949) 422-1287

Snacking and eating even when I'm not hungry
FluffyChix replied to tigraq08's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
No judgement here. Just a question. What has changed between when you first had your surgery and now? Why do you find it acceptable behavior now, when in the beginning you trod a very narrow path and would not allow that behavior/response in yourself? If you can find the answer to that question and go back to the rules and limits of the early days (I'm not talking about punishing yourself with the 5 day pouch reset nonsense), you may be able to change your behaviors and avert disaster. But, I honestly think that I would encourage anyone in your situation to seek out a counselor well-versed in bariatrics and one who knows how to treat people with food issues. ((hugs)) -

Welcome! I believe both surgeries work very well. At your age, I'd probably lean toward VSG, even with having 200lbs to lose. As these outstanding people have all shown, it is possible to exceed the averages and be well-above-average! They rock. Bariatric Pal rocks too and is a source of friendship, like-minded support, cheerleading, setting you straight and keeping you in reality, and information. So. Much. Information! And, you're giving yourself a greater shot at success by reading and questioning here! I'm old at 55. So I'm grabbing the bull by the horns and doing what I think is one of the most extreme methods and also the gold standard (because VSG is "newer" and doesn't have the track record to call it a gold standard yet). I'm having the RNY to get the restriction but also the absorption advantage and also to get more of the hormonal reset advantage--although both RNY and VSG give hormonal pluses! I've no doubt, as you listen to your surgeon and work your program you will make the right decision for you!!! Congrats on making the decision for change! Life is too short to be saddled with the pain of obesity. -
Dumping. malabsorption. after bypass surgery
James Marusek replied to Doo Lally's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I did not experience any fatigue after my RNY gastric bypass surgery. I just followed the regiment of vitamins prescribed by my surgeon's office. But some report problems. I did not have problems with prescription medicine. When I left the hospital I was off my two types of diabetes meds for high blood sugar and haven't taken any since. After a few weeks my blood pressure was dropping like a brick so I took myself off the two types of high blood pressure meds. I consulted my doctor the next time I had an appointment and he was fine with that. I am now over 4 years post-op and I have taken myself off the last of my prescription medicine for my asthma. I cut my prescription in half a year ago without any problem so now I completely took myself off it. I didn't realize that the surgery might also be beneficial for this condition. Some people experience problems with prescription medicines. Some of this has to do with downsizing the prescriptions. For example if you continue to take your high blood pressure meds or blood sugar meds, they can cause other types of problems. I lost my ability to swallow large pills after surgery and this affected primarily my taking of large vitamins such as calciums without breaking them up. This condition lasted for around 2 months and then I was back to normal. Sometimes for some prescription meds, absorption becomes a problems. So work these issues with you surgeon's office. I suffered no dental problems. But I did come across one individual who experienced severe problems. But this was because of either problems with the surgery or other medical conditions amplified by the surgery. I couldn't find out which. I only saw her at one bariatric surgery support group meeting and she never returned. In her case she could eat only minuscule amounts of food or drink at a time and as a result nibbled food many times a day. I couldn't even tell if she had any follow up after surgery or if she was following the surgeon's directions to a tea. But dental problems can result in extreme cases. Dumping syndrome can happen but it is a good thing a learning experience. Maybe only half of the patients experience this after surgery. I have had dumping syndrome several times and it is awful but I don't regret the surgery because of it. -
I'm confused and I hope someone can help me out. I have read many times that Bypass surgery does not cause GERD and if you have it, the surgery will get rid of it. I have also read Possible Complications/Risks of the Gastric Bypass. in Bariatric Pal and it states: Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, with severe heartburn as a complications/risk. I do not have any probems of this nature and really don't want to develop it due to surgery. Can anyone help me understand which statement is correct?

I know, I know, the sizes shouldn't matter, really. But I'm curious where everyone who has gotten to goal has rounded out, size-wise, compared to where you started. I started at a size 28 and am 3 months post-op. I've lost around 78 lbs. and am down to a size 18; these size 18s are starting to get loose. I am astounded constantly by this turn of events because I was definitely not a size 18 at 240 lbs. on the way up! It's so interesting how bariatric bodies are different from normal ones! So where did you finish up in sizes? At this rate, I may blow my dream 'size 10' out of the water!

The foamies

I sure hope you get some relief soon!!! As I said I ended up having 5 Endoscopes with 4 Dialations. but the good news is I haven't had anything since Jan of 2015. They finally got it finished. I had my RNY on July 2, 2013. I also got to my goal weight in 6 months. At one of my Dr's appointment, they ask me if I had ever stopped losing weight when I told them that I had stopped losing and I managed to gain 7#'s back. They all said that they were really worried about me. I started having problems within my 1st month. I fought it until Nov of 2013 where I had my 1st endo done, then another in Dec of 2013, Jan of 2014 July 2014. My last one was Jan of 2015. In the meantime, I fired my Surgeon and went to another BARIATRIC CENTER who is 100% better heck they even smile at you. My Surgeon had not 1 lick of bedside manner and called me a PROBLEM CHILD due to all of my problems. Hopefully, you will get some relief soon. I hope that you can realize that it WILL get better. Did they take a look? IK know exactly what you are saying about people saying this only happens because you overate or ate something that you shouldn't, I got the same response!! Just know IT IS NOT your fault. Some of us are blessed with overactive tummy's that heal too fast and produce more scar tissue. HUGS and if there's anything I can do let me know. Talk to you soon!!! -
Pureed Stage Protein Dilemma
mylighthouse replied to LisaE19's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When I was on the pureed phase, I did mashed tilapia or chicken (from a can). The chicken went down really well when blended with mayo, or yogurt like a little chicken salad. Also did mashed up canned beans, pintos or black. Or refried beans. You can even add sour cream to them. Cottage cheese is a great source of protein. For the 2 weeks I was on pureed, I pretty much ate the same things. I also made a ricotta bake (search for theworldaccordingtoeggface). She has recipes for all bariatric stages and gives the nutrition facts with her recipes. Great resource. Everybody has a different plan, and I was thankful I could have more than 3 meals a day, because in the beginning, I could only eat 2oz of protein per meal. -
Why would you decide something before you have even tried? This journey is probably more mental than physical. Do you think I wanted to tell my trainer that I weighed 280 and had just lost 55 lbs as a result of a bariatric surgery??? No, of course I didn't. What I wanted MORE than avoiding my discomfort was the benefit of being fit. You are not going to get the results you want without confronting what your choices cost you. OK, fine - avoid the discomfort of potentially being judged (which may actually be unlikely). But at what price? You are not getting trained and you are left with it's more important not to deal with the discomfort of people assessing you.

I had my 4 week appointment yesterday. 4 weeks to the day and was given the all clear to resume normal eating with no restrictions. Of course that doesn’t mean to go back to candy and all that other junk, but i can eat whatever I want. It’s on me to be smart about it. I started morning of surgery at 275. Four days later I was at 266.6 (8.4lb loss). One week out i was at 259 (16lb loss) and two weeks out I was at 252 (23lb loss). I’m now at 247. Total loss in 4 weeks is 28 pounds so I’m pretty pleased. 1st week was just chicken soup broth, premier protein shakes (Costco), surgar free jello, popscicles, and sugar free pudding. 2nd week, same as week one, but a couple times tried mashed potatoes. Started walking on treadmill few times a week. 15 minutes each. 3rd week, same as 2nd week, but tried meatballs and diced chicken breast. Tried chicken tacos. Chicken, corn tortillas and salsa. 4th week, beginning of the 4th week tried steak quesadilla, chips and salsa. Keep in mind very small portions. That’s where I’m at now. Was also cleared to lift weights which I will be starting next week. At no time have I been nauseous or thrown up. A few times my stomach would rumble for a second or two, but nothing significant. I’ve probably been a bit aggressive in introducing the foods, but it’s worked out fine and I’m happy with the results. It’s all up to me now how I handle myself going forward. As far as recommending this surgery, for me it worked out great and was fairly easy. However, that may not be the case for everyone. I made the decision by realizing it was something I needed to do at late 40’s to improve my health and way of life. I chose not to pay too close attention to the negative reviews because as with any surgery everyone handles it differently. Good Luck

On twitter? You won't find research period on twitter. There isn't any scholarly research on it with Bariatric patients.... yet. Hopefully there will be one day. There plenty out there with other populations, though, including the overweight, diabetics, cancer patients, etc.

Does Weight Go Up and Down After Sleeve?
Mattymatt replied to AnnieGreen's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I would recommend following up with your bariatric team. -
I started my journey in February. I have BCBS of Florida. My particular plan has a clause that specifically states they don’t cover bariatric surgery so my first submission was denied. I was approved on my first appeal on 8/19. The doctor’s office told me that once my insurance sent me the physical approval letter in the mail, to bring it in and they would schedule me. After many calls to the insurance and calls and emails back and forth with my doctor’s office I found out that BCBS would not send the letter because of the clause and the doctor’s office would not schedule without. Even though they can check in the electronic system and print out the approval there, they insisted. Apparently they have had problems with the insurance paying after the fact. I have to applaud a few of the girls in the office and in corporate that persisted and on 10/5 I was informed that they had obtained a letter from BCBS and I was good to schedule. It’s a good thing they scheduled me for 11/17 because my approval expires 11/22!

Hey Brightfaith, There are a few support groups (in-person) around. The best that to do is call the hospitals that offer the surgery and see if they have an support group. I am not sure were you live however, Howard County Hospital has a support group and St. Agnes Hospital has one as well. Well you are in search of a group go to the Bayview group sessions. They are free and I don't think that you have to be a patient. If they do tell you that you need to be a patient just state that you have not picked a Doctor yet. I happen to like the bariatric program at Bayview (John Hopkins entire bariatric program). Your pre-qualifying part of this journey will go really fast so get ready. You will learn alot of nutritional tips and secrets but keep in mind that many of the foods you like or love now, you may not like after your surgery. Also, be mindful that this will be more of a mental journey then anything else. You will be taken away from your comfort zone with food and face some challenges but just know it is all worth it and you will make it through.

Pre-Op in da am!!
Frankette replied to WillPowerPrincess's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My preop appointment was two appointments back to back. First with the bariatric coordinator to go over pre op diet again and other info that I heard 100x already in all the 6 months of appointments prior. She then booked me a date for my surgery at the end (which she changed to a month later in a phone call later in the week 😢). When her appointment was done I had a quick meet with surgeon to sign consent and ask any questions. I asked him if he could take pictures of my stomach after he took out the excess. He said he would. I just wanna see how big it is😂 -
Hey everyone. I am new to this app. I am about 1 and 1/2 months away from surgery. Looking for a support buddy that may have been through this. I am having a ds switch procedure. Thanks all!
