I did my best to clear out as many processed food items as possible. I do keep canned tuna/chicken on hand as well as a few cans of tomatoes/canned sauce to use in a bind. I buy almonds weekly as a snack. In the fridge, I keep string cheese and some cottage cheese/yogurt for snacks. I buy a large container and split into my own portions to save money. We try to by fresh fruit/veggies weekly and try our best to eat what is in season to save $$. I use frozen veggies for smoothies if I cant afford fresh. I use frozen spinach a lot also. I use a protein powder and make all kinds of smoothies . Try to avoid all breads and refined sugars. No chips or crackers because they trigger me to eat more. I like to roll up deli meat/thin slices of provolone as a cheap " go- to " lunch.

For fruit, it was recommened that I eat greek yogurts with fruit, or canned fruit in natrual juices, and applesauce until I get to week 6. I have been eating the yogurt thus far cause I at least get the 10g of Protein with that as well.

Just sleeved and vacation!
peaceout replied to lsubabe33's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went on vacation while on my pre-op diet, which was awful, but not quite the same as 16 days post-op. Just from my experience with Carnival I have a couple of suggestions. Breakfast will be the easiest- they will have scrambled eggs, yogurt, and cottage cheese every day. lunch and dinner may be a little trickier, but they should have 1-2 Soups to pick from. If you're cleared for soft meats you can almost always find fish; just chew like crazy. I still would have been on pureed foods so small amounts of mashed potatoes, refried Beans, etc. would all be put to use. I would recommend bringing a Blender Bottle and some Protein powder. It might be difficult to eat as often as you need to. There is always food around, but with the exception of the traditional meal times, it's all sandwiches, burgers, pizza, etc. So being able to mix some Protein Powder on the go might be helpful. Carnival may not be very helpful when it comes to changing your cruise date, but they've always been accommodating to my food allergies and if you feel comfortable telling them about your restrictions, I bet they would go above and beyond to help you. But I also don't blame you if you don't want to tell them. Have a great time, and good luck! -
Thanks guys!!! I do light exercise. I'm eating a Greek yogurt right now 12g of protein

I agree, you have got to find a way to get your Protein in. It is absolutely critical for health, healing, and ultimately weight loss. I know we all had this surgery to lose weight, but you have to focus on health right now but not getting adequate nutrition can have severe consequences, the least being hair loss. You are recovering from major surgery. Have you talked to your NUT or surgeon? What is your protein goal? Even if you don't like food right now you have to find a way to eat. Have you tried Greek yogurt or cottage cheese? Are you cleared for soft meats like tuna, tilapia, or canned chicken? What about chili? Refried Beans? Protein shakes are not the only source of protein, but they do make it easier to get enough when you have such little room in your stomach.

I would change from slim fast. It's too many carbs & not enough to protein. I would opt for a power protein drink for either lunch or dinner. Simply add a quarter cup of yogurt to your protein drink. It will give you more fluids as well as increase your protein. Use the other time for drinking water. Make sure you eat good meals at home. I kept my meals interesting by preparing them in mini ramekins that I could heat & eat. Switch up with sauces and spices. Keep water bottles with you everywhere. Sip in the car or where ever else you can. It's important to hit those protein & fluid goals.

On days like this. I'll hit a 711 or Walgreens and grab beef jerky, cheese sticks, an apple & nuts. Sometimes they have boiled eggs or yogurt. If I go to Walgreens I'll grab a 4 pack of protein shakes. Just keep a water bottle.

Single Mother prepping!
LessOfMe0503 replied to bbrookmedic's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm a single mom as well! Fortunately, my mom was able to come down for the week when I had surgery. I did make sure I was prepped for when she left with foods my 8 year old could grab himself- pbj, yogurt, microwave popcorn, fruit... that helped tremendously. -

MarchLikeAnAnt replied to mouse1972rb's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery is on the 28th (UK) I'm on 3 pints of milk and 2 yogurts only, I would give anything to have even just a teaspoon of cottage cheese! Lol -
Your weight loss is on target. No you do not need to eat whey based protein powders. The numbers for the one you like sound okay. The extreme fatigue may in part be due to not meeting your protein requirements. I used FAGE 0% greek yogurt to my protein shakes for an added protein boost. A half a cup will give you 65cal 5carbs 13gms protein and 5sugar. I would add it to my morning protein shake since I worked out first thing. It was a terrific protein boost and fueled my day. You do need to watch your carbs and sugar throughout the rest of the day, but this helped get me started and kept me going without fatigue. It also made it easier to meet my protein goals by the end of the day so I had more time to focus on getting in my water.

I keep a good supply of spices and seasonings. Tumeric, garlic powder and cayenne are my most used spices. I also MUST have at least one bottle of sriracha sauce at all times. I either make or buy a jar of garlic paste. Lemon and lime juice are good for adding a touch of brightness to foods. Condiment wise I keep regular mayo, but actually prefer the Just Mayo, pickles, salsa, red chili sauce, Braggs apple cider vinegar, good olive oil and coconut oil. I also have red quinoa, organic black Beans, rolled oats, flax powder and TVP at the ready. In the fridge I always have eggs, finely shredded cheese, FAGE 0% Greek yogurt. I also keep a few cans of Progresso Soups on hand for when I am too lay to make my own. In the freezer, I keep frozen spinach. I wait for Acme's 10 for $10 sales and stock up. Perfect for adding to soups or tossing in a Protein drink. I try to eat as cleanly as possible so I don't buy foods containing red dyes, artificial sugars. Stevia is an allergy trigger so I don't buy anything that contains that. I keep processed foods at the bare minimum. I don't buy any diet foods at all. I'd rather do without or eat less of something than eat a bunch of man made chemicals. I try to cook from scratch and do a weekly food prep on Sunday's.

What Does Full Feel Like?
rnsamantha replied to Giarc's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I agree it's a fine line for me between satisfied/full and a ticked off sleeve that ends up with me vomiting. I feel gassy/burp if I'm to full and get an upset/queasy feeling. I'm 3 months out and can't eat a cup of anything. The most I can do is 6 oz of yogurt. I typically eat 2.5-3.5 oz of meat and I'm full. -
I also get those little single-serve packages of green Beans, peaches, pears, etc. it's easy to add one of those to a Protein to make a quick meal. I eat a lot of green beans! Cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, string cheese, deli turkey, deli cheeses, tuna and salmon packets, refried beans, chili, Peanut Butter, turkey sausage links, and eggs are in my fridge and pantry. I keep frozen turkey burgers, chicken, fish, blueberries, etc. in my freezer. My spice drawer is multiplying. Before surgery I didn't cook very much but I am trying to do it much more so I have been adding more herbs and spices to my collection. I have always had tons of condiments (I love mustards, pickles, olives, artichoke hearts, capers, mayo, aioli, salsa, jalapeños, etc.) I find I use much less mayo and/aioli than I used to though. I just rearranged my small fridge yesterday and it is still about half full of condiments!

Anything in a tin/packet went although I do now have 60g of tuna (in water) in tins for emergency purposes. Most of my food is either in the fridge, cottage cheese, yogurt, babybel light cheese, meats etc. or homemade and in the freezer, Soups, broth, fish, meatballs, chilli etc. I buy large packs of chicken and turkey and weigh them into 3 or 4oz, then bag up and freeze. That way I can just use a bag at a time and know how many grams are in each bag. All my veg is frozen and I don't do popsicles or puddings. I am very lucky as my husband is a very good cook and hates anything out of a packet or jar and makes everything from scratch. I clean up the kitchen which usually looks like a scene of crime afterwards. I tend to eat fresh main meals daily and the rest of the meals from the freezer (leftovers are good to freeze too!) I can take out 2 frozen meatballs and sauce, take to work and by lunchtime pop in the microwave and ta daaaa... high Protein lovely lunch. I just found beef Jerky for the first time and that’s in my locker at work in case I miss lunch and can eat on the go. There are also packets in the car, in case of emergency. Edited to add: Protein powders and bars are in there too!!

How do you puree your food?
LipstickLady replied to Sleeve Inspired's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I bought a few mini blenders and returned them all. My pureed food stage only lasted a few weeks and I decided that I could live on refried Beans, very soft scrambled eggs, warmed Peanut Butter, hummus, guacamole, cream Soups, yogurt, cream cheese, boxed mashed potatoes and gravy, etc. along with my Protein drinks. After my pureed stage, I knew I would never want mushy food again. -
Staying steadfast thru struggle

I was just going to post that pumpkin puree mixed with greek yogurt and allowed to set in the freezer makes a good snack, but I like the idea of using ricotta . May have to try that. -
post op liquid phase question
_Kate_ replied to Shainadelphia's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
On the full liquid stage, if I was having Soups or yogurts I would wait the 30 minutes for two reasons. I wanted to get into the habit and to make me feel full for longer. If I had a 12oz Protein drink (mine have always been made from powder with water), I still waited 30 minutes. It’s hard to get all your fluids in at the beginning and between the liquids, fluids and Vitamins etc I felt I was on task 18 hours a day or more!! I was just really lucky that I could tolerate drinking a lot within the first week post op. I have stuck to the 30 minute after meals however the only thing I did change for myself, was that I have dropped the 30 minutes BEFORE eating. Now I wait 10-15 minutes and that suits me well. YMMV -
I think enough stores have something healthy that you can grab. Convenience stores carry yogurt, string cheese, protein drinks, packs of nuts, bottles of water, even sandwiches (you can take the bread off)

How many carbs do you shoot for?
BLERDgirl replied to Thinside's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
That's why I look at the source of the carbs and how active I am. Good complex carbs aren't gonna kill you. Fruit for example gives you fiber & Vitamins. It helps your digestive track work properly w/o resorting to laxatives. Ditto for yogurt and all that yummy protein and Calcium it brings to the party. Then look at lifestyle. There's a reason why athletes carb load before a meet. It gives them energy without depleting their muscles. So if you're working a long day on the job or doing a heavy workout, those carbs are being put to good use. What you dont want are heavily processed carbs that your body can't quickly break down. Those are the bad guys that turn to glucose and can then turn to fat. -
I just keep a 2oz glass of water in my hands all the time LOL When I empty it, it gets refilled. Today I graduated to creamed soups, yogurt, pudding. Not drinking 30 before and 30 after, puts a bit of a crimp in the drinking though Just wish I could figure out why, the more I drink, the dryer my mouth gets! It's crazy! The bloat is finally going down. Noticed my ankles are not swollen any more. One day at a time, eh?

HAD TO SHARE! protein milkshake is the best for those who just can't on the shakes
Julie norton replied to readyforthislifechange's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Love my protein shakes... With 1/2 frozen banana and a bit of ice, fair life milk, yogurt and protein powder Yum. We ALL have our ways... I've cream does not seem to fit in any equation IMHO -
Sounds like you are doing well. I would clarify with the doctor that it's 64 ounces of Water and not Fluid. If it's fluid, pretty much all liquids count. If not, then you'll have to get more creative. I would add a tiny bit of water to the Protein drinks. I also added plain 0%Fage greek yogurt to my Protein Drinks to up the protein. I liked them cold so in addition to adding a tiny bit of water, I also served them over ice. It helped me get in more water. Otherwise you sound well on your way. Congrats!
