    average weight loss

As you can see results vary. My personal experience has been that I lost a lot of weight presurgery (50 lbs in 7.5 months presurgery). After surgery I have been a slow loser averaging 1 pound a week, even though I am very strict about my diet and do an hour of cardio every day. I just have reached restriction, six months out. I think some people start losing faster once they hit restriction. I'm hoping that will be true for me. I guess the moral of the story is you should prepare yourself that you may be a 1-2 pounds a week person. That way you won't be disappointed if that happens. I see many people on here that are very upset that they are'nt loosing 5 pounds a week.
  2. minimeme

    average weight loss

First few months I was averaging over 30 lbs loss each month. Then it slowed down the farther I got from surgery and the closer I got to my goal. But I had a lot of weight to lose. I have lost 220 lbs.
  3. I have noticed weight loss in my face and neck area and as weird as this sounds, in my hips ????. I am 3 weeks post-op today.
  4. When I had my surgery..my surgeon said had a massive liver and a massive spleen..anyone have a giant spleen?..I'm trying to be educated and he didn't tell me much .I'm nervous anyone know anything ..I know loosing weight will help..any experience or knowledge anyone would like to share?
  5. So I ate my fave mexican tonight and kansas city bbq last night about 2500 cals/day instead of 800 the first 3 days. Tomorrow I'm rebooting. But I've still managed to lose 7 lbs since tues. A lot of that is definitely Water weight. At 660 I've got a lot of swelling. Anyhow theres an update on my progress. I bought some advantage eas shakes to try. I want to lower my carb content below 50 gs. Does anyone else here find the weekend especially hard to stick with your diet?
  6. I didnt expect this "insurance game" to play out like this. Bear with me --this may be a little lengthy... My first letter from Cigna (OA) was last week.. I posted my frustration, but felt as though things would get approved. This past monday I received an official denial. The letter stated that they needed the letter from another physician other than the surgeon. The problem is that my primary physician wrote a letter that included my weight, BMI, co-morbitities, and that I would be a good candidate for the surgery. this was included in my file. I spoke to my Pre-determination cordinator, and he didnt know why it was denied..... I called Cigna and asked them what were they looking for, and what is the next step.... Mind you, EVERYTHING ELSE is there. I thought perhaps my surgeons office did not fax the primary's MD's letter. They faxed a "reconsideration" letter yesterday, and it was denied today. Feeling very anxious, I called Cigna, and explained everything, and wanted to know if my letter from the primary was there. The rep from Cigna was very nice. She found the letter, but it wasnt worded specifically for Cigna. They want the wording to specifically say that I am healthy enough for surgery, and that I am medically clear from the primary's standpoint. Ok.. so i called my primary's office, and now they are saying that the Dr may not clear me medically because I dont have a surgery date yet. I called the surgeons office AGAIN, and he said that he will schedule me a "dummy" date, and will fax the correct "verbiage" to the Primary... So now... we wait Well... by the end of all of that, I could even concentrate at work. I had so many feelings going on. I felt like the go-between with my surgeons office and Cigna.. I felt like my pre determination guy isnt working hard enough.. (He seems too nonchalant for me). Are these normal feelings for someone in this situation? Is there anything else I could do? At first I thought of other routes (i.e Mexico) or giving up all together..I was really having a pity party BUT after I looked at other people who have done this, and who are living better, healthier lives, Im ready to fight again! I will not give up on the count of some technicality... Ive met all the qualifications for this, and Ive put so much of my time, and money into this. Ive worked really hard trying to get this together, So the Saga continues.... I will keep everyone posted.... p.s. I know I have some typos, but I cant find the spell check.. lol

Dont Know What To Do... (Cigna Oa Blues)

Sorry to hear about your denials, but hopefully the new letter will clear everything up for you. I am glad you posted what was required in the letter. I have Cigna (OAP) also, and I've been worried that my PCP wouldn't know what to write. I understand the letter needs to include: 1. Height, weight, BMI 2. Co-morbidities 3. Statement saying the surgery is medically necessary 4. Medical clearance that it's safe for me to have the surgery Did I miss anything? Thanks, your help is appreciated.

To tell or not to tell......

Congratulations on your weight loss so far! You will find many different opinions on this subject. It has been a hot topic on here. It's a very personal decision, in my opinion, whether to tell or not tell. It's not wrong either way - just whatever the individual is comfortable with. I opted to not tell anyone outside of my husband and almost grown children. I am happy and comfortable with that decision 4 months post-op. By the way I love your response when people ask why you had WLS.
  9. I had my 2 month check up this week and have been a little bummbed about it so I would like to share and ask the opinions of some vets please. Few stats: I was sleeved on 8/2/18 SW: 293.7 CW: 256.9 Loss: 36.8 Meals: I meal prep breakfast and lunch Breakfast is always a variation of the same thing: egg, a veggie (zucchini, spinach), a meat and cheese baked in a 4oz muffin tin (see photo). Lunch is a meat in some kind of sauce ie chili or spaghetti with noodles. Photo is 3oz of baked chicken in cream of mushroom soup with steamed zucchini (taste better than it looks lol). Dinner is usually leftovers or a fried egg. My only deviation from the above is last week when I was wanting to snack and had 1oz of peanuts. I track every bite and average between 800-900 cals per day. Exercise: I have done 3 days of zumba a week since week 3, except last week because of a cold. I thought I was doing a good but Dr said I should have lost a little more weight, at least 40lbs by now. I'm reaching out because im concerned that I'm not losing enough, and that it will get worse from here. I have a very unhealthy relationship with food, and don't want to start doing stupid stuff like starving myself but at the same time want to correct any bad habits/eating now. Does anyone see anywhere I can improve/change? In your opinion, should I be worried this early on or does it all balance out down the road? Anything I should know this early on that can keep me from freaking out ? Sent from my SM-N960U using BariatricPal mobile app

    So, so depressed...

You have osteoporosis, you aren't dying!! Turn that frown upside down! Think about how much better this will be for you when you've lost your extra weight, think about where you will be in a year. Take your Fosamax like you are supposed to - on an empty stomach, 30 minutes before you eat or drink anything, and while staying in an upright position (maybe use that time to get some cardio exercise in) and think positive. You are doing this to improve your health and this is evidence #1 that you are making a step in the right direction. You are right, tomorrow is not certain, we are not promised tomorrow. SO... make the very best of what you have today. Keep your chin up, it isn't the end of the world, it is the beginning of a new one!!
  11. I don't disagree with the preop diet as I know it has a purpose but I do disagree with the 6 month supervised diet. My center required me to lose 5% of the weight before they would do the surgery however my insurance required 6 months of supervised diet. My Surgeon told me he feels that is unreasonable as most people cannot lose and maintain that long and he would rather just do the surgery while true weight loss is occurring.
  12. The bypass takes a lot less work though. I still think the band or sleeve is a better option overall but for people that aren't going to put much work into weight loss bypass is a better option IMO. Bypass is a set it and forget it surgery. Hopefully they set it right the first time. The band takes more work. You have to constantly get fills, there are constant hurdles such as heartburn, being too tight, being too loose, etc., along with adjusting diet to lose weight. The band is a good tool. However, if you give me the raw material to build a deck I'll do it. Some people are never going to build a deck no matter how many tools and materials you put in front of them. Some people are just better off buying something premade from the internet and hoping it ends up working for them. I talk to people all day in chat that honestly should not have gotten the band. The pre-op diet is tough...but if you're questioning the band before you even get it and think it's going to be too hard then it probably is.
  13. I see mine as a long term sucess; I can tell you that I've working out in the gym doing one hour classes 4-5 days a week, some times I stay for 2 clasees= 2 hrs workout for almost a year now and I have only lost 22 pounds so sar and I am so happy about it. It is like my trainer always says, it took more than a month-more two months -more three months to put the weight on, so don't expect to lose it in a month or two, its going to take time for your body to use all accumulated fat. Thats whats keeping me motivated. My goal is to lose an extra 75-80 punds and I dont care if that takes me two to three years to acomplish.
  14. Hi Everybody! I am booked for March 4th... Less than a month to go now and I am so so excited! I'm going to be banded by Dr. Cobourn at the Surgical Weight Loss Centre in Mississauga (just outside of Toronto), Canada. I'm 23 years old and have been overweight since I was about 9, and obese since I was around 14. I, with help from my parents am paying for my own surgery, as it is not covered by our Canadian health care and I don't get medical insurance through my crappy job. I am so so excited to get started... I'm even kind of excited to start my 2 week pre-op diet. My clinic has us consume only Medi-Fast for two weeks - it's apparently really hard for the first two days but then you get your body into Ketosis and just pee a lot and have bad breath. I am so so excited about this. For the first time in my life I feel like I am taking control of my weight, and I feel soooooo empowered! I have a blog, the link is in my signature and since all I wanna talk about these days is banding, I've been writing a ton... Check that out! I'm so excited to get to know you guys! xoxox Angie
  15. I had my revision on September 10, 2012 and had no issues at all. When progressing through the food stages, as I listened to my body, I did extend some phases by a couple of days and it was well worth it. I have had no vomiting, no sliming, but I also do not overeat. I learned many lessons with the band so the sleeve has been quite easy for me. I reached my goal weight in 6 months less a day and currently am still losing. WOOHOO sleeve!!!
  16. My surgery is May 2.... i am so excited, anxious, happy, scared and thankful.....i have been in a wheelchair for almost a year because of my weight... I have had 2 back surgeries and the stomach weight makes it impossible to walk... My goal is "to walk again"!!! good luck everyone!

    Scared of my surgery

Just the opposite. If you weren't feeling all of this, I would say you aren't normal. But you are very normal. It's major surgery. As with any surgery there are risks. To be honest with you I can't sit here and say that no one has died on the table due to complications, because I know there have been deaths. But what I can tell you is that the rate of success is proven to be higher then the rate of deaths and complications of the lapband. I have only 1 regret since I have been banded. That is that I didn't get it done sooner. My doctor told me that they expect you to lose 50% of your body weight in the first year. I am already 75% down and only 8 months (100 lbs.) I have not weighed this much since 1987. I can not be 100% forward with you and say you will be ok, because no one knows and I can't tell the furture. I can tell you that the surgery wasn't that bad and I have been through Open Heart Surgery on the bypass machine. So if I can make it through that, I'm sure you will be fine with the Lapband surgery. I wish you much luck and please keep us posted.
  18. It's hard to tell with so little information. How much scrambled eggs? What size tin of tuna? How much Protein at dinner? How much/little weight do you have to lose? .

Psych Eval Before Lap Band Surgery

Mine was uber easy. It seems this is another thing that is different though, depending on who you see. We sat and talked for roughly 15 minutes. He asked information about my family history, my personal medical history, and who my "support people" are. He wanted to know whether I've tried other weight loss methods, and what the results were. He also asked why I wanted to have surgery. After that, he said I was a good candidate for surgery. It was really laid back, quick and easy. Others have had to do a 500 question psychological profile (something like that), but I did not. I was pleasantly surprised. Basically, he wanted to know that I had a support system in place, that I was likely to be able to "handle" the changes necessary, and that I was doing the surgery for the "right reasons".
  20. There have been several posts recently about emotional eaters so I thought I'd post a different spin. I am a lazy eater. And when I'm stressed I DON'T eat. It's like I am punishing myself; yes, it's a kickback from being sent to bed w/o dinner for some perceived behavior as a child from my abusive parents. So food has never been a comfort for me, but a necessity. In a twist, I still abused eating as an adult because I'd grab what was handy and easy, which usually translated to junk food. I didn't feel like I deserved good food. And...let's face it, it's easier & faster to slurp down a bowl of mac n' cheese than bother with a steak & broccoli. I was sleeved 8/21 and have been doing remarkably well. Except this week. I just noticed this morning that I am slipping back into my old habits. I'm relying on readymade Protein Drinks and Atkins bars. Sure, I'm under my calorie intake and getting Protein, but it sure isn't healthy! Pre-sleeve I don't think I would have caught myself slipping back to my unhealthy habits. I noticed it because I faithfully log into MFP and review my food. I have discovered that I must have easy foods like cooked shrimp at my fingertips or I just won't bother to eat. And my metabolism is so screwed up that my body holds on to everything it can when I don't eat. And I don't lose weight. So food addictions/issues has many, many faces and I'm glad here on VST we can share & help each other.

    Exploring in Maine

Well you are right on the edge of a qualifying BMI. If you weight 230, you are okay. If you weigh 220, you may be a bit under. You might want to weigh yourself and then make sure you meet a minimum BMI of 40 at your initial consult. If they put your height down as 5'2", that will help too. I've heard BCBS is pretty straightforward if you want a band or bypass. So that's good.
  22. Greetings everyone. I have been lurking here for a week or so. I've struggled with my weight since I was a child (joined weight watchers for the 1st time @ 12). I can't count the number of times I have joined that program since then. I always seem to loose 20 or 30 lbs and then stall out completely. I did once go from 210 to 150 in a 6 month period of time after a very bad end to a long term relationship. LOL, that was the first time in my life I just could not eat! It was not the healthy way to do it, though! I have known several co-workers who had lap band procedure done and had great success. I was never sure if I would qualify or not, though. When I went for my yearly physical in Jan. my PCP noted that I had gained some significant weight over the last year. She asked if I had ever consisdered bariatric surgery (she had gastric bypass done herself about 6 years ago). I told her I did not know if I would qualify or not as I do not have any major health issues. She suggested doing a referral to the surgeon in my area who does this type of procedure and to discuss with him whether I meet the qualifications or not and whether gastric bypass or the lap band would be best for me. I am leaning toward the lap band. I am 5' 2.75" and am between 220 & 230 # at the moment (I don't weigh myself). At any rate, my pcp made the referral to Dr. Jamie Loggins. I have my first appointment on March 13. I received a big packet of paperwork that I have already filled out. The person who called to set up the appointment advised I should expect to be there for 2 hours. Any idea what I can expect during those two hours? I am assuming since I have seen a number of co-workers go through this process, that my health insurance is fairly good about approving it. I have Anthem as insurance. Anyone have experience w/ this company? Look forward to learning lots here and getting to know you all! TSB

4 1/2 Post-Op And Not really Losing Weight

track your calories.. make sure you are not eating more than the 1 cup of food at each meal, get your protein in and lots of water. the band will not necessarily make you lose weight.. it's a tool to help you eat smaller amounts and keep you satisfied longer... myfitnesspal.com will work for tracking calories.. you would be surprised how that will help you...

    can u relate to..

Sounds to me as if you may need to have s long hard talk with your surgeon or perhaps therapy. In the meanwhile stop comparing yourself to your bfs wife or whoever she is. Preop weight 389 current weight 327 that's 62 lbs lost since RNY 6/11/13
  25. My name is Hutch - I have a tentative date of May 9th with Dr Aceeves in Mexi -Cali I am a truck driver and struggle with weight loss so I have made the decision to be sleeved. I am nervous but not scared. I have been 100 lbs overweight for the last 10 years and I have tried every diet imaginable - and they work for a minute and then fail. I have no one to blame but myself. I have diabetes, sleep apnea, asthma and planter faciatias in my feet which causes me alot of pain. I hope and pray that after the surgery with time these conditions that I mention will go away. I recently got married to a beautiful woman that was sleeved in Janurary,2010- and when she said that I needed to get a passport I thought she was excited about going on vacation but little did I know she had other plans - I am happy though because I feel that this is the best decision for me and for us to live a long and healthy life together. If you all will join me in my upcoming journey I would greatly appreciate all of ur help and support. Thank you and God bless, Hutch
