    Hello

I am thankful I had a preop bc you usually get a good weight loss high going into the surgery, and I think it helps prep you for your post op diet. But, if you dont have to do one here is what I would do: If you are a soda/pop drinker try to stop now and drink your Water. I am a total sunkist addict, and gave pop up about 5 weeks before surgery. At first I added crystal light or SF koolaid to my water, but now I just drink water. This will help now though just in case you are a caffenine fiend and will get headaches for a few days from withdrawals. Also, if you are required to do Protein shakes after surgery, go get a few different ones now and figure out which ones you like. I had to stay overnight after my surgery. I dont remember how long my surgery took...I think 45 minutes. After the anasthesia (however you spell it) wore off, I felt pretty good. I was up and walking the halls within the first hour of being back in my room...helps with the gas. I had an IV drip and a drip for pain meds...so I just kept pushing that button bc...well who doesnt enjoy free pain meds :w00t: I went home the next morning, so I was in the hospital maybe 24 hours. My doc gave me some medicine to help me not get sick with the liquid loritab. I layed around, watched tv, blogged, walked up and down the street. My boyfriend had to work, so I was home alone all day no problem. My surgery was on Tuesday and I went back to work on Monday. The only pain I really had at all during the recovery time was from the gas. I just took my gas-x strips right on time, used a heating pad, and walked. Hope this helps. If anything else comes to mind, give me a shout. Amy

SCHEDULED FOR SEPT 4th. ONE WEEK AWAY!!

I have been so undecided about this surgery that I even canceled my last appoitment which was actually today. I am 5'6 and weigh 195 lb. I have gotten so much slack from friends and relatives about doing this. Everyone seems to know better than I about whats best for me. I can loose the weight and I've done it before. My problem is I gain in right back + 5-10 lb. My husband is supportive fortunatley and so are my children. I need to stop getting so frustrated with myself and have faith that this is a new beginning for myself. I look forward to no diet cokes and miller lights the most. I am basically killing myself if I dont do this. Thanks to everyone and your messages. This has been a major support form me and I give you all my love and wish you the best:whoo:

Are you getting your Protein in how much have you lost. Did you start lower because of the band. The sleeve is getting more popular here. When I went to the seminar they did not even talk about the sleeve dr. tried to push the band. My dr. only did 2 of them but came highly reccommended as a good dr. I am so happy I chose him. He said he is doing alot more sleeves and feels out had the best results for long term weight loss. The problem is there are no long term studies. Do you plan on going to the support groups. My bff had the sleeve in Mexico and had loss 100lbs she lives here too Sent from my SPH-D700 using VST
  4. :confused:I have posted about this before, but I am really having a hardtime now. I keep hearing "oh you look great, you aren't going to lose anymore are you? I am at 186 most of the time. Now every pound I lose someone notices. How do you know "when you are there". My doc told me to choice a goal for myself. But for some reason I can't seem to do it. I don't think I will ever get there.... even tho I am in the mirror. I am scared.
  5. My name is Donna and I had been banded June 23rd 2005. I have lost a total of 118 lbs and I have pretty much stopped loosing weight now. My body has stopped where it feels it is suppose to weigh. I'm very pleased with the results and am looking forward to an ongoing healthier life. :clap2:

    Cycle

common problem - if you do a search, you're likely to find a lot of posts on it. Has to do with the infamous "hormone dump", they say (fat cells store estrogen - which start to flood your system as you lose weight)
  7. Well after waiting 9 months I am finally scheduled for surgery! I will be having my sleeve surgery next Thursday, July 31st! I am so excited and nervous all at the same time. My 9 months consisted of 6 months weight management, psych eval, gall bladder removal, cardiologist clearance, an initial denial from insurance, and an appeal process. It was an emotional roller coaster. But here I am! I am so excited to be starting the next phase of this journey! As of today, I have lost 27lbs. I am now on my 3rd day of the liquid diet. So far so good! One thing that has kept me going through all of this is positivity. Staying positive and optimistic has truly helped me get through the rough parts. Everything happens for a reason! I truly believe this. Having a great support system is extremely helpful too! I want to say thank you to everyone on here! Our support system has meant the world to me!

    3 weeks post op

Unfortunately, in our society we are more comfortable talking and advertising things related to drinking, sex, relationships, etc., but when it comes to doing things (especially surgery) to lose or maintain weight loss it's "hushed". If your friends/family or truly friends/family, then you should say to them, I already look hot now I'm gonna be healthy and HOT! Good Luck girl!

    3 weeks post op

People just don't get it and it has taken me a long time to realize that. I have beaten myself up long enough on other people's thoughts. Case in point. Years ago I lost almost 70lbs on WW and could not have been prouder of myself until.... The one comment that changed it all and me back to my old habits and I gained 90lbs. ONE COMMENT!!! A co worker said to me in the elevator. You lost so much weight. You look REGULAR now- REGULAR who the F says that!!!!! And unfortunately at that part in my journey all my fragile psyche heard was I wasn't regular before!! And something must be wrong with me. That is why this time I am no longer dieting. I have changed my life for the better and am emotionally more stable. I get frustrated with the scale from time to time. But I know for once I am making the changes to be healthy and happy not a size 2!!

    3 weeks post op

thank you ladies so much!!! All your kind words really are helping me =] I go in for my first fill on the 30th and I'm kinda nervous yet excited. For some reason I've gained back a few pounds which is totally making me feel bad and I don't want to go in to see my dr and him say something about that. I think it could be due to not taking my thyroid meds for like 2 weeks and it's thrown my body off. I've just learned now to brush off those comments and most of them have stopped but I know once I really start losing they will come back, Most of the negative comments have been from my own mother. All my life shes begged me to lose weight and even once told me that she loved me, but she would live me more if i lost weight... my reply was well that makes no sense cuz you have more to love now lol either way it still hurt and I know the only way to ever make my mom happy is being skinny which I don't understand that. But once again thank you all and I hope all of you have a great day!!!

Calories, diabetes, and a clueless doc

I think you are correct re the diabetes information. I would guess your numbers may increase some as you have some carbs once you are months out but I would guess not to the point of going back on meds. I was at 300-400 calories the first month and worked up to 500-600 and stayed at that level until month 6. Then I was only 10 pounds form my goal and worried about losing too quickly (I know that sounds insane right!!) so I purposely increased calories about 100/week to hit around 1000. I worked up towards 1200-1400 around the 10 month mark and now at almost 2 years am around 1500/1600 to maintain. Honestly that seems a little high compared to what others on here say but it keeps me at my comfortable weight. According to the BMi chart I could lose another 10 pounds but I feel like it would make me look too thin and bony ( also crazy to think that would ever be a thought re. my body). If I see my weight trending up 2-3 then I set a goal of 1200 (but usually log around 1300-1400) and that will get me down those 2 pounds within 1-2 weeks. I do think that wont be as easy in another 6-12 months as I am out of the honeymoon phase so I keep logging food/calories religiously. If I see I am low on protein its just a matter of fact thinking ok go get a piece of cheese or drink a glass of milk vs old me would get crackers or chips at the end of the day.
  12. Tomorrow will be 2 weeks post-op and a follow-up with the bariatric team. Purees are coming! Today I saw my GP about my glucose and BP. She confirmed no more diabetes meds (YAY!!!!!) but then she said something odd. She noted that my numbers are excellent on this full liquid diet, but we'd see how I do when my diet "progresses." Now, she's young and clearly still developing her bedside manner (she's awkward) but she insinuated that my diabetes would probably come back and I'd have to go back on meds once I'm on solid food. I guess I thought most docs (even GPs) would know that bariatric surgery has a high likelihood of "curing" diabetes immediately post-op, especially as our weight goes down. Mine was mild to begin with and almost controlled through diet alone. I kinda feel like she threw a bucket of cold water on me. (Getting rid of diabetes was one of my top reasons for surgery.) ANYWAY, I told her I'm consuming about 400-ish calories per day on the FL diet. And I know (I KNOW, I KNOW) we're supposed to concentrate on water and protein at this point, but I'm curious what everyone else's average per day is. Eventually I think we top out around 600-800 with 1,000-1,200 max, but anyone else willing to share where they are in the beginning stages?
  13. So tomorrow is the day that starts my new journey of being banded. I have mixed feelings. I know this is what I need to live a healthier life. My knees won't hurt anymore, I won't get tired going up stairs, and I will maybe finally be able to get pregnant. My journey thus far has been difficult. Changing bad habits to good habits is difficult. I don't have to tell anyone on this site that food is a weakness for me, but today I can say I am stronger than food and it will not have power over me. I have a great support system behind me and this site to get me thru the hard times, because I know there will be some in the near future after surgery. I have been back and forth to get this surgery and now the day has finally come. I am ready to live the life that I deserve and not be held back by my weight. I was always the chubby girl in class, the oh you would be so beautiful if you lost the weight, and the woman that sits in the corner in new places because I am self conscious of my weight. That ends today! I will no longer let my weight determine my feeling or actions. I am the only one that is in control of the food that I put in my mouth. I am the one that is in control of getting my butt off the couch and going to the gym. I guess this whole process to get banded has made me truly look at myself and determine what I want and need in life. I wish everyone luck in their journeys. I am thankful for this site because I know you all have experienced some of the same things that I have because we have let of weight control so many of our emotions.

according to NIH, the "normal" weight range for a 5'7" woman is 121-153lbs. you are 170. so you still have quite a ways to go (50+ pounds) before you are considered underweight. while most people 6 years out struggle with regain, you admit you can basically eat anything you want and keep your weight down, if not still lose a little. i'm sorry... what's the problem here?

Optimal Bmi For Black Women Undetermined

I'm not counting calories. I refuse. I just eat when I am hungry. I am also not doing a set cardio program yet. I find that when I start a heavy cardio program, I get hungrier than I need to be, so I've been doing lots of resistance, walking more and taking the stairs more in my every day life, and doing very short spurts of HIIT (tabatas) here and there when I feel up to it. My weight loss was stalled for a bit, but once I started adjusting my carbohydrates (adding more) my body was happy. I lost weight better if I am taking in simple carbs. I knew this from pre-surgery, but everyone is so low-carb gung ho that I thought I'd see how it went... the answer is not good White rice works for me. You've lost a lot for how long it's been since the surgery Slow and steady is better for your body/mind anyway, so keep at it. We're getting there.
  16. Don't let it get you down. I was forced to attend two as well. The pre surgery folks said almost nothing. The meeting was dominated by post surgery folks who had no life before WLS and have been reborn thru the process. I'm guessing that they had become insignificant obese "faces in a crowd" before and now they're filled with confidence - which is great, but now they're persona as a "WLS success story" defines who they are. I'm not saying we don't have to eat healthy post sleeve, I'm just saying it's much easier to do when you can barely eat 8 ounces of solid food at one sitting and you can exercise without lugging the weight of a small person on your back. WLS has its own social world. If you want it or need it, it'll be there for you. If you don't, it'll be in your life's rear view mirror before you know it! #zeroregrets

    Meds prior to surgery

That's a good point; I hadn't really thought of absorption after surgery. Obviously, being ER, I can't crush, chew, or otherwise make it more digestable for my new stomach. I am at a middle of the road dose, so lowering the dose is certainly on option, as is changing to some other med. My dream would be to lose enough weight where my back isn't supporting so much of me and I can drastically reduce what I have to take to function. Even if it doesn't work out exactly that way, I have an amazing pain management doctor who has been treating me for years that is fantastic about trying different things to help me determine what works for my body. It'll just be more of that, after surgery! ~Kat

5 week early stall BROKEN :)

Its been 4 weeks since surgery for me and Ive been losing and gaining the same 3 pounds for a week. Nothings changed in my diet. Trying to drink more.
  20. Hi everyone, I had my surgery july 16th and lost alot of weight right away. I started at 293 and and by my 1 week checkup i was 276. Throughout the first month I went up and down between 283 and 276. At my first tightening I still weighed 276. I was bummed but my surgeon was very happy. The first 3 days after my tightening i lost 10 lbs bringing me down to 266. I was thrilled. But the day i started mushies the numbers started climbing and a week after my tightening i am back at 275. Is this normal? Does anyone also feel like as long as they eat they dont lose weight? i feel like no matter what i eat, whether healthy or not i dont lose weight. Has anyone found a way to get in control of when they lose the weight? Is going on a permanent liquid diet going to help? How about incorporating exercise? Please help! I have a trip to go see my boyfriend whos in the army and would love to do everything i can to lose weight until then.

    Lap Band Pre-op

You can expect a great change in your life:) Really expect some pain. But take your pain medication that the doctor gives to you. Don't over do it, but make sure that you walk as much as possible so the air comes out that they pump into you during surgery. You might want to get yourself some Gas-X strips for gas pains (which is from the air). Recliners are good to sit in after surgery. If you don't have one make sure you prop a pillow under your left side (If that is where your port is going) when you lie down. Body pillows are great too. It takes a good 2 weeks before you are totally back to normal. Make sure you drink your fluids. And don't cheat. Stick to the plan that the doctor gives to you. It's important for your body to heal. Most of all don't be upset if you don't lose much weight the first few weeks. It's all about the healing process. Get yourself some sugar free ice pops. Not only are they good but they help with the swelling too. Good luck to you and please keep us posted on your progress. CONGRATULATIONS!! Do you have a surgery date yet?
  22. hi there. Im marie and am new to this. I havent been banded yet but am seriously thinking abot it. I have heard some very good sucsess stories. well done, but also know of a couple of people that have been banded but havent lost any weight. I wandered if anyone could give me any information on to why they think this is?? Also, how does it make you feel afterwards, towards food I mean? My problem is with food is that while im busy all day I dont even think about food, then I come home from work about 8.00 in the evening, starving and want to stuff myself silly. Unfortuantly for me even though my belly is telling me im full if my partner is eating something lovely I want to eat it too. I want to be able not to want food. Is this how a band will make me feel? I have tried many diets but not sucseeded because if my family eat nice things then I want to eat them too and I have no will power. desperatly seeking help before I get any fatter

    Women Only! Please!

Sugar free fudge pops. Or sf jello with a squirt of whipped cream on top! Yummy! I always get mad cravings right before Tom comes, and I can eat more too. It always helps me lose weight after it though. If you do slip don't beat yourself up about it, just get back on track after. we are human, we defiantly aren't perfect.

    2Nd Thoughts

That last night is really scary for many of us. I didn't sleep at all the night before my surgery. You have made a huge decision for yourself and now you're looking it in the eye and wondering the same things many of us wonder. Should I do this? Will I be able to live with this decision for the rest of my life? If you're truly in an introspective mood, go back over your list of pros and cons. But, remember this, once you're sleeved, you will lose that 150 pounds and be happier, healthier and more energetic. You'll get to live a lot longer than you will if you remain obese. Even if you manage to lose that 150 pounds on your own, how hard will it be to take it off and keep it off. Yes, you've lost weight pre-op, but you've done it by literally eliminating food from your diet. I had the same thoughts you're having right now. Less than a year later and 112 pounds lighter, I'm STILL thrilled I got on that table. Think of this: What would YOU give right this minute to be 112 pounds lighter? A piece of your stomach is easy compared to whatever the answer to that question is. Good luck! I'll be here waiting to welcome you to the loser's bench after your surgery!!! Your future is so bright that you're gonna need shades!
