    Carbonation?

If it causes you pain, don’t do it. Carbonated drinks will Not cause your stomach to stretch out or any old wives’ tales that are perpetuated in the weight loss surgery industry. I’m down 85lbs at 5 months and drink 1, very rarely 2 cans of caffeine free diet soda a day. Make sure you’re still getting in the majority of your fluids from better sources and not having sides such as acid reflux and you’ll be fine. Also wanted to note that diet soda can be a trigger for some when it comes to binging. If this is the case, also stay away.
  2. The "10oz per meal"...do you know how many calories these meals consists of? At 10 months, weight loss is more affected by caloric value vs volume/mass. A 10oz salad is just a fraction of the calories of a 10oz burger. If you can, try tracking your food intake and see if this is where you can make some changes. Track it for say, a week straight and you can get an idea of your average intake. Reduce if necessary. Calorie intake is *usually* the issue if a stall lasts longer than a few weeks (months?). If not, I'd probably suggest to consult a medical professional to see if you have any circumstances that pre-dispose you to being heavier. Good Luck! ❤️
  3. Hey Everyone, I hope you're doing well. Here's a bit of background on me before I get into my current dilemma, if you don't care about that, skip to the TLDR at the end. I'm a 27 year old man and I got my surgery last year. I've always been heavy (the last time I was less than 300 lbs was in elementary school) and I wanted to live a longer, happier life. I talked with my doctor and she said that Bariatric surgery was the best option for me. I went to one Bariatric clinic and was basically treated as a number, so after six months of prep and almost $1k, I left them and went to a Bariatric clinic that a family friend had had good luck with. I had better luck with them and was able to get my surgery ~ 4 months after my first visit with them(vs almost a year with the first one). My finance(then GF) and I actually got COVID three months before my surgery, though it was not horrible for us. My hospital stay was fine and my recovery went pretty well. I had issues with the liquid diet following the surgery, but after that I was fine until now. Read after the TL;DR for my current dilemma. TL;DR: I'm 10 months post-op and my weight loss has stagnated. I'm prepping ~10 oz per meal, though I usually don't finish it, and have been doing that for about a month. I do about 20-30 minutes on a peddle bike (under my desk) per day. My doctor recommended Keto for me (which I tried pre-op and lost 90+lbs, though it was terrible for me psychologically) and I started it today. I was wondering if anyone had any tips to push past the wall I'm stuck on. Thanks for any advice. Paul
  4. Hello, I am 4.5 months after Sleeve surgery. I am very happy with the weight loss. I know hair thinning is common. I am seeing (for about 4 wks now), a substantial increase in my thinning. I am doing all I think I can. Noixin hair products, Rogaine, Biotin. My team says it is normal and will regrow. My question is....anyone experience this and did it regrow??
  5. Has anyone here tested positive for Covid after surgery and suddenly stopped losing weight? I’m 5.5 months out and started having symptoms a little over a week ago, tested positive yesterday. I haven’t dropped any weight since and am actually gaining. I’m not on any medications since I am vaccinated and my symptoms aren’t severe. I’ve been consistently dropping weight up until the last week and a half. Not sure if it’s possibly inflammation from Covid that’s causing this?
  6. Hi am 52 years old had gastric bypass October 19,2018. Am almost three years out and the best decision I ever made no regrets . My heights to was 350 am now 184 pounds but i exercise and lift weight . I am happy to say I have a tool to work with because losing weight on my own I couldn’t do it I have disc problems and thyroid issues but now they remove the thyroid issues so am left with the back issues but I still keep active . I can always adjust my tool and lose more weight but I stick to fruits , vegetables , protein which Include protein shake and smoothies and my weight remains the same even through the pandemic

    lifting skin

I'm losing weight now. The first 10 kg went quickly (three weeks). Now the skin on the arms and stomach looks so-so. She's very flabby. I am training, I am on a HEALTHY diet again, because before this first 10 kg I was eating 1000 kcal. So what to do with the skin? how to do it like before losing weight - filling, elastic? maybe someone knows, creams, wraps, etc.
  8. I have Tricare and my surgeon told me that I had to do the “program” for 3 months. However, anyone using Tricare ACTUALLY had to wait that long? I have documented weights from PCP dating back to 2016. We’re there any issues getting approved with Tricare? All advice is welcomed. Thanks in advance 😊

    Sleeve to Ryn...Help

You will need to talk to the surgeon about the length of the bypass and optimizing it for either additional weight loss or just maintaining your current weight. This *might* dictate how much additional weight you might lose.
  10. Hi, I’m having surgery on 9/22 to convert my sleeve to rny cause of GERD. It's been 10 yrs since I've had my sleeve done, and nowadays, I could almost get a hamburger. My doctor is not touching my sleeve, just rerouting for my GERD. Would I still lose weight even though I hardly have any restrictions?

Have you started this and what have you done to begin. I had VSG 2014, past year I have gained 20 pounds after I reached my goal. I’m so disappointed and discouraged.. anything helps
  12. I am sending good thoughts for you to have a rapid recovery. Yes, yes water gain aka swelling is probably the culprit. I am rooting for you. Sent from my SM-N986U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Any August 2021 Bypassers?

Way to go!!!! That's awesome! I'm struggling with a bit of a skin infection on my shin right now and there's swelling so I don't see my 8 day stall breaking just yet. Hopefully these antibiotics kick in and my leg returns to normal so I can get back to cardio. At least I've stayed the same, so silver lining is maybe I have lost a pound or two considering the swelling has to add some weight. I will definitely check out that link you posted. Congrats again. Keep up the amazing work.
  14. Pre-op diets are drastically different from surgeon to surgeon so don't be worried about that. Some don't even require one, until two days before surgery to make sure your system is clean of debris. As far as the swimming and exercise are concerned... Usually you can soak in the bathtub or swim after 2 weeks due to the incisions needing to be healed. I believe two days is far too soon. May get infected. My surgeon wanted me to start doing light exercise like walking or cycling right away, just no heavy workout with weights.
  15. My stall broke and I'm down 2.2 lb. this week. It must have been the pickles lol They always cause me to gain water weight for a couple of days. Causes a lot of weight fluctuation in the past and present. I've really been craving them or even a swig of pickle juice. I read it is common to crave salty things when our carbs are low. I eat a balanced diet, not keto but because my calories are low at the moment, so therefore, so are the carbs. I am rooting for all those on a stall as I await my next one... Not many things are certain in life but stalls are inevitable for me. Interesting read here: "High carbohydrate consumption has caused your body to retain water and salt up until now. When you eliminate carbohydrates from the diet, you begin to expel pounds of water" https://www.theartofketo.com/crave-salt-on-keto/

Guys who started over 400 lbs.

First post here . Scheduled for sleeve in coming 9/20/21 . Current weight : 153 kg (330 lbs) ; height 5’8. i am concerned about the post surgery sagging and skin issues . How many here have experienced skin sagging or issues related to that . Does it mandatorily require skin removal at the weight and stats . Been obese for most of thr life so do anticipate it as a issue
  17. I'm with @PolkSDA on this one (Full disclosure: I used to be Team Ultra-Low Carb during weight loss phase and some months afterwards, but had changed my tune since.) OP, I eat "unhealthy" stuff on the regular. Mostly in the from of dessert-y stuff, and fried stuff. I still limit my carb-y bread/rice/pasta intake, but eat some once in a while ,esp if it's homemade. I also drink (alcohol) regularly. I'm sure many of the members on here would tsk-tsk or clutch their pearls at the range of foods I eat. But I get it...my eating habits, while they work for me and my lifestyle, would be an utter crash and burn for others. I know my limits and boundaries and they know theirs. We all succeed and fail under different circumstances. The secret is to figure out what special set of circumstances will work for YOU. I track everything I eat (garbage and all), and make decisions on what I am willing to eat based on what MFP says, as well as what my scale says in the morning. This protocol has been serving me well for 2 years. I am only almost 3 years post op, so am really still just "at the beginning of the rest of my life", so who knows if what I'm doing will sustain me. But its working so far. P.S. I am 5'2" female, 115 lbs and have been maintaining this weight (+/- 5 lbs) for 2 years. Good Luck! ❤️
  18. I probably single-handedly supported the entire beef jerky industry during weight loss phase (and some months after that). Little to no sugar, lotsa protein and satisfied my never-ending salt cravings. I always had a little ziploc of it in my purse. I also ate alot of cottage cheese and yogurt. After weight loss phase, I went through a love-affair with chicharron (i.e., pork rinds/cracklins). But I wouldn't recommend this until you are past weight loss phase as they are VERY high in calories (but also very high in protein). In terms of substitutes and alternatives, here are some examples of items I ate (and still eat)...note that I was ultra-low carb during weight loss phase, and and try to be semi-low carb now (but don't always succeed, lol) Shiratake noodles instead of pasta (actually very low nutrtion-wise, but I had to eat my saucy foods with something!) Chicken pizza crusts instead of wheat based pizza crusts (I also did cauliflower crusts, but I personally prefer the chicken ones). Kale chips instead of chips-chips Berries instead of higher-sugar fruits cashew milk instead of regular milk almond flour instead of wheat flour (careful: almond flour is way higher in calories) Stevia or erythritol instead of sugar sparkling water with lemon instead of pop/soda

    No weight loss pre-op

I couldn't budge the scale the first three months, no matter how few calories I ate. Every time I managed to lose a pound, it would show back up within two days, sometimes bringing a buddy with it. It was incredibly frustrating to be eating cabbage instead of cake and not losing. What finally overcame it was making sure I drank at least half a gallon of fluids every day. My weight loss is still much slower than is reasonable to expect, but at least the gaining seems to have stopped (knocking on wood).
  20. I reached out to my bariatric care team, who was made aware of my visit to the ER last Tuesday and said the normal oral tablet medication would be fine. Here is my communication to them today, and their reply. Me: So, the response was lacking, since a number of my concerns (medication absorption, weight stall, not being able to hit my nutrient goals) were not addressed. I will assume positive intent and say they have probably dealt with dozens upon dozens of people with concerns/fears/complaints post-op that do not amount to anything, so perhaps I've been lumped in that category. We'll see what the doctor says today (he's a rheumatologist) although he may just refer me back to my PCP or the ER (in which case you all have permission to say "I told you so!") I'm going to ask for blood work too just to ensure I'm not septic, and to see where my WBC is.

    Getting nekkid with someone new

As some of you know, I've been through a recent-ish divorce. After my plastic surgery in Jan my husband got weird, angry, super insecure and borderline abusive. I've started dating again and have met a really nice guy. I have disclosed to him about my WLS but not PS yet. Although my loose skin on my belly and arms is gone and my breasts are perky again, my thighs still show the evidence of my significant weight loss. Plus I've got all my PS scars. I've been seeing this guy for about a month. He is super sweet, funny, smart, and supportive. I'm having him over for dinner tonight at my place for the first time, and I imagine things are likely to progress to where he may be seeing said loose skin and scars. I'm so nervous! I'm for sure worried about rejection, about his reaction, etc. Any guidance for me? I'm totally confident and feel awesome fully dressed but am super nervous about being on full view by someone new for the first time in many, many years.

I've also heard that folks have sometimes worn ankle weights to increase BMI. Just sayin'.....
  23. Amen sister. I honestly think this is the not-so-secret to weight loss and maintenance: keep doing what works until it doesn’t anymore.

    Regain

I'm out four years and in the past few months have been battling a slight gain. It has brought me back mortality as far as weight loss goes. I no longer have the super power to lose it as I once did post WLS. After talking with others who have had WLS we all came to the conclusion that 1- The gain must be addressed ASAP. 2- We cannot eat as we did, we need to "trim the fat" from our diets. It's like spending too much money and going into debt. Do you continue to spend at the same rate and expect to make up the debt? Same with food, we need to take in less to lose the most. 3- Do it in attainable increments. A loss of 2lbs a week will get you better results overall than trying to lose 10lbs in a week. 2lbs is doable and you can build on your success while not achieving the 10lbs psychologicaly will start you on the eating for comfort spiral 4- Some form of exercise is better than no exercise. We found that taking the stairs on a regular basis really helps as does simple walking. Of course if you feel comfortable going to a gym that's great as well. 5- Weigh once a week and the same time on the same scale. We find this gives us enough time to see trends and to address them. Daily weigh ins are not accurate and longer than a week is too much time to correct any minor gains. At this stage of our lives weight loss takes effort and time. Long gone are the days of rapid weight loss. I'm lucky to have so many family and friends to talk to and to get different views on things WLS related. It really helps. I for one could not do it on my own.

    sabotaging visitor

Six months post WLS and you've been put in a position to fail. Not by your doing but by an inconsiderate person. You have only ONE CHANCE to do it right. Only one. You need to give it your best shot and not have an inconsiderate person sabotage your path to better health. I once again bring up the comparison to being an alcoholic . Would you allow anyone to hinder your recovery from alcohol by letting them bring it into your home? NO, so why allow him to sabotage your recovery from poor health and obesity by allowing him to bring in junk food? The choice here is very simple, for you to succeed with weight loss and getting back to good health he cannot be a part of your every day lifestyle. Get rid of the food or pack it up and drop it off to the place he is going to but you need to get it out of your home. Remember you are only six months out and you've already gained weight. I'm out four years and I will tell you it gets harder NOT easier to lose and maintain the weight loss. Your in the best position of your life to lose the weight. Don't let Mr. inconsiderate ruin it for you. Despite what you might hear, insurance companies will not pay for a do over. Make the best of this golden opportunity.
