How do you get your veggies and still get your protein
Inner Surfer Girl replied to marypups's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I eat a lot of green beans. I get those little single serve green bean packages and add one to my protein. I drink V8 on occasion. I slice up fresh tomato or cucumber and eat with cottage cheese. Add a tablespoon or two of a soft vegetable (like squash) to some of your meals. I love fresh fruit. You can add some fresh blueberries to your yogurt. I like a fresh sliced peach or a fresh plum as a "desert". -
Eating/Drinking/Vitamin Schedule
Daisee68 replied to gigis's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@gigis - It definitely is overwhelming! I mix half of a container of low sugar yogurt with 1/2 scoop of vanilla Protein powder on most days which gets me 21g protein and that helps. I am hoping once I can actually eat more dense protein (meats) that it will become much easier to get it all in and not have to do shakes. I asked my nutritionist last week and she said drinking 2 shakes a day at my stage (3 1/2 months) was ok. (I had a set back with a stricture though so I am running a little behind schedule though.) My schedule is even a little more complicated because I have to take Synthroid in the morning and then wait an hour to take anything in PLUS I cannot have calcium (or most other vitamins) within 4 hours of Synthroid, so I feel your pain! I also have kidney stone problem (pre-op) so my endocrinologist took me off my calcium supplements as long as I was eating 2 servings of cheese or milk and 1 Premier Protein shake per day. SO MUCH TO REMEMBER!! -
Newbie looking for a buddy
losingit41 replied to losingit41's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am post op day six today of my gastric bypass. Is it normal to crave what my family is eating this early? When reading about other post ops they all say that they don't want food. I'm drinking carnation instant breakfast and Special K shakes for my protein. I also eat yogurt and take my vitamins but sometimes I get so hungry in the evenings. This is somewhat harder than I thought. I'm so scared of messing up. -
I was worried about constipation, eating essentially no Fiber, but was surprised this morning (day 3) to have an acute onset of diarrhea (sorry TMI). I haven't seen that mentioned anywhere else in the boards - any other experiences like this? My liquid diet consists of 4 Protein shakes/day, plus 6 small servings of either unsweet applesauce, V-8, cream of wheat, low cal yogurt or sugar-free pudding. It's supposed to be about 1000 cal/day but I've only been getting about 800. I have 2 Soups purchased from my surgeon's office to use in place of Protein shake and had one each day so far. Only 28 more days to go.....

How do you get your veggies and still get your protein
BLERDgirl replied to marypups's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Toss some veg in with the egg (spinach ad/or broccoli are my favs.) Add a bit of fruit with the yogurt Make your own chicken salad. Use half plain greek yogurt/half mayo to cut fat & up protein. Serve in a lettuce wrap or over spinach Instead of a quest bar, have some fruit. Half an orange or half an apple with nut butter. Have a meatless Monday and eat all plant based Proteins. -
How do you get your veggies and still get your protein
Pillar2butterfly replied to marypups's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Try adding some broccoli or spinach (or other veggies) in with your egg. I'm 5 weeks post and my NUT told me Monday to cut out Protein shakes and less yogurt, to eat more of what she called "real food." So I've substituted those with 1.5 oz meat (like tuna) with about 1/2 cup salad greens, She suggested to eat 2oz meat and add 1 oz veggies. You can also add crushed pineapple to ricotta or cottage cheese or use veggies to dip in ricotta (sounds gross, but is actually yummy to me). Add fruit to yogurt. She also told me to cut out Protein Bars. If you do Protein Shakes, add fruit to them. I get bored with the same foods all the time, so I am constantly changing things up. Hope you find a way to make it work. Honestly, in the long run, I struggle too to get anything but protein in, but I keep trying also. -
How do you get your veggies and still get your protein
marypups posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am almost three months out, and I am having trouble eating any fruits or veggies. My NUT has recommended that I work on veggies, but I don't know how to do this and still get in my Protein. I feel like I eat all the time and barely make my protein goals. I am hitting the protein goals, but am worried that adding in veggies will mean I won't get my protein goal. My typical day looks like this: Breakfast 6:30: one egg with cheese (10g protein) 10:00 greek yogurt (15g) lunch: costco chicken salad (14 g) snack: greek yogurt (15g) dinner: 2/3 oz chicken or something family is eating (10 g) sometimes: 1/2 Quest bar as dessert (10g) Or sometimes I do eat a small handful of prunes. So, I am doing well on protein and also getting fluids in. But I really feel like there is little room for vegetables. I know I need vegetables and Fiber. How do you get your veggies in and still get in your protein requirements? -
I have my first post op visit with my surgeon and NUT. Should get to move from clears to protein drinks and yogurt. I hear you on the yogurt!

Kind of worried about little restriction
Thinside posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm just over 6 weeks out, and I'm kind of worried about how much I can eat. I see people on here who are 3+ months out who can only eat 500-600 calories. I am eating around 700-900 calories a day, but I could easily eat 1200 - 1300 calories if I wanted! I'm talking 1200 of high quality, protein-rich foods, not junk or sliders. I'm not overly hungry, but I also never feel that super restricted feeling people talk about. I read about people who can't eat more than 2 oz or never want to eat anything, and I wish that was me! I can take full gulps of liquid -- not HUGE gulps, but a lot more than sips. I can eat 5.3 oz container of yogurt, or a veggie hot dog, or 3-4 oz of tuna in 10-15 minutes without feeling at all sick or restricted. I eat as slowly as I can, but the few times I've forgotten and have eaten too fast I've had no ill effects. I have not found a single food that disagrees with my sleeve so far, and I've never thrown up. (Not eating any bread, Pasta, rice, though, so I can't say how those would feel.) The only food that causes a super restricted feeling is salmon. I never drink with meals, never eat bread, starches, etc. I'm following the guidelines. I'm losing slowly but surely. But I am so worried that if I don't have much restriction now, I will go back to my old, bad eating habits in a few months, after the restriction gets even less! Does anyone else have this situation? Does anyone have any advice? -
Jewels34, my bad. I should proof read my messages. I meant mushy /pureed foods. I stated today. I had yogurt. I've never wanted yogurt so bad. Lol.

So what kind of "i didnt know" food events have you had?
BLERDgirl replied to Stevehud's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I do half plain greek yogurt & half real mayo, or use avocado instead. -
There is a recipes section on this site. Not sure if you have had a chance to look at it or not. Also there is a site called "the world according to eggface", it has a lot of bariatric recipes. I would definately suggest making a good homemade chicken stock for your liquid phase. Use carrots, celery, onions, chicken, Water, salt, pepper, garlic if you like it. For most this becomes a lifesaver during both preop and post op liquid phases. Trust me, you will be sick of Protein shakes and needing something warm and comforting to sip on. It helps with hunger too during preop. I made homemade chicken cacciatore using boneless chicken breasts, mushrooms, onion, green pepper, garlic and your favorite marinara sauce. I then vacuume sealed it in 2/3 oz. portions and froze them. When I wanted to eat, I simply dropped one in boiling water to heat through. I bought a vacuum sealed after another bariatric pal suggested it. It is one of the best tools in my kitchen given my need for tiny little portions, especially the first 6 months. I would bring home leftovers from the restaurant and get 2/3 more meals or more out of 1. I made a lot of different chicken, ground beef, ground chicken/turkey dishes. In the beginning casseroles are not recommended. Stick with Proteins with Fat free gravies or sauces to help them slide down easily. I would go to the eggface site to get some good purée ideas. I personally did not do well in that phase and lived on yogurt, Protein Shakes and cottage cheese. Good luck to you!

Looking for those who had sleeve in August 2015
nmstaci replied to Sherri1964's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was also sleeved on 8/11. It seems like we are on the same track. I'm eating about 800 calories a day and I've only lost 22lbs since surgery. I've lost inches though. I eat lots of dairy.. Greek yogurt. Cottage cheese and Babybel cheese. Ground beef is a little tough but ground turkey and chicken work well. I also have a hard time getting 64 oz of Water in as I just get busy at work and don't sip so often. I do feel better though! I know the best is yet to come. -

Official August thread! Where are you guys?
Paulie656 replied to Faithoftheheart's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi everyone! Four weeks post op today. Have been at a stall for about a week and a half. Getting a little frustrated. I don't want to sound like I am complaining because I am not at all, but I have had NO problems getting liquids, protein or meals in. So much so that I am actually paranoid about wondering if they actually took enough of my stomach. I have been on soft foods for a week and have only gotten to the point where I felt full once and I think it was because I didn't chew well enough. Otherwise, I have had no problems and even got down a Chobani yogurt down (5.3 ounces) without even feeling full. I feel like I'm not doing something properly. I definitely don't have any hunger though so they must have done something in there, LOL. Any tips on how to break this stall? I've increased activity, fluids and protein. I'm still only getting about 600 calories in a day and the doctor wants me at 1000 but I haven't made it happen yet, but try every day. -
Aussie girl sleeve Fri 28 August!
smileygal replied to smileygal's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi all. Sorry it's been a while. Life got crazy for a bit. I'm nearly 4 weeks post op and had the 3 week stall!!! So frustrating - same weight all week. I guess I had already lost 11kgs so can't really complain and I don't want to lose too fast as many ppl don't know I've had the surgery. I have more energy, finding stairs easier already, doing more walking. Yesterday we had a big family lunch and I was able to eat enough over 2 hours that no one seemed suspicious. Fish is by far the easiest thing but I also had a spoonful of curry with rice. Cheesecake for dessert was just too easy to eat but I only had a sliver. At work I'm mainly having a yogurt for morning & afternoon tea - same one half/half and a shake for lunch. What other things work well on soft diet? Mushrooms going down well for breakfast! Did anyone else get the 3 week stall?? -
Morninga? Possible WLS supplement?
PdxMan replied to yerawizardamy's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
Hello and welcome. I take Moringa and I have noticed a difference. But it is a different kind of difference ... I know, sounds funny. From what I understand, moringa helps your body to absorb nutrients more efficiently. So, it's not a substance which super-charges your body and makes you more beautiful to 83% of all accountants in Illinois ... But ... I just feel like my body works more efficiently. I use the powder and add it to shakes. It tastes like a$$ if you add too much. Makes you feel like you are a koala bear without the high ... a leaf chewer because that is what it is ... ground leaves from Moringa trees. I blend this with a teaspoon of fish oil, fresh fruit, yogurt and Protein powder. I call Breakfast. -
Craving protein shakes
MrsKarenC2008 replied to MrsKarenC2008's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@Stevehud I haven't been very willing to "step outside the box" ... so I haven't "tried" much of anything new ... sad for me ... because I know there is a lot of new things I'm missing out on ! I love your milkshake idea ! @Elode That is what I've been doing too! shake for Breakfast .... meat for lunch ... shake for afternoon pick me up ... meat for dinner ... SF fudgesicle for my treat at night ... the occasional handful of peanuts or low-fat cheese stick or yogurt or scrambled egg ... but that is all I've lived on since surgery ... and yes, I'm alive -
@@joatsaint thanks for the recipes! I'll try them this week! I love yogurt! And cheese and lunch meat. Those go down easy. Believe it or not, before surgery I was a huge egg-lover...now I can't eat them! My doc told me to 'listen' to my body. Eat as much Protein as I can, but don't push it. It's funny, I'll sit down to eat and be HUNGRY! But after a few bites, I'll feel done.

Yes, diarrhea here too. I didn't have a full bm until my 5 th day post op. That worried me. I added fiber to my broths and that worked a little. I start nudge foods today. In excited that I can have yogurt.
-
Sometimes dairy and sugar cause issues very early on so things like protein shakes custard yogurt and apple sa use. I was like that. I then blended chicken and veg soup to a thin consistency and that was fine. Obviously you are best to follow your Dr. But just providing and idea it could be your sleeve doesn't like the above I mentioned like mine at first. All the best.

7 wks. post-op not enough protein
kradtke5 replied to jennylew's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My NUT has me on 60g of protein a day. So in my eyes, you're doing great. I started to water down my Greek yogurt with a little milk, works great. -
Hi all. I am 7 weeks post-op. Worried I'm not getting in enough protein. I am really having a tough time eating any meat and Greek yogurts are way too thick so they get stuck. I have no appetite and I have to literally make myself eat and drink all day, (It's kind of surreal ) I am lucky if I can get 60-70 grams of protein a day. Is this normal for 7 weeks? I have an appt. with my nutritionist on Wednesday and we will review my food journals. Just wanted to see where everyone else was at with getting in enough of their protein.

Wow that sounds like a lot of food at one sitting this early. I am not eating that much yet (though I am bypass patient). Have you tried other sources like cheeses, yogurt, etc?
