    Shopping

Thrift stores and clearance racks have become my new best friends! I don't think I've spent over $10 for anything lately! it's so nice to have a smorgashboard of items to choose from! Unlike the plus sized racks (damn you designers!). My biggest shocker was my shoes! I have been a size 8 forever, and just a few months ago, realized I'm now a 7.. That part I didn't like. I'm not much into shoes..so I hate shopping for them (prefer barefeet! ) And I am also curious how consignment shops work. I have a few very nice party dresses that I need to hand off.
  2. I just had my first fill and it was 2cc in a 10 cc band. I know ultimately that the goal is to not be hungry, but right now, between meals or if I go too long between eating, I am starving. Is this normal? I eat the right amount protein and veggies until I am satisfied, but about 2 1/2 - 3 hours later I am so hungry.

    HATE this liquid diet!!!

I'm going to say that I can only imagine! Sounds crappy. My pre-op diet was two whey protein shakes (chocolate flavored) mixed with skim milk and two meals that each consisted of 3 oz. lean protein and a steamed veggie. Post-op wasn't so terrible even though I had 10 days of liquid -- I mean, it was a wide variety of liquid and most of it tasted pretty good. I can see that giving up carbs, caffeine and all your other vices along with things like CHEWING would be pretty awful. At least you're at the very end. Surgery is a speed bump. Down for a couple of days and then you're on your way. GOOD LUCK!
  4. Hi! I am 10 days post gastric bypass surgery, but I am really scared because I am able to eat a lot of yogurt and I’m scared I stretched my pouch! Is this possible or am I spiraling?

    Need encouragement

Deanna, I'm sorry to hear about your husband. Mine was not very supportive of me either. I too have 2 small children at home. My mom drove me to the hospital and I had to stay overnight because the surgery took over 3 hours and ended late in the evening. When I was released the next morning, I had to go home and take care of kids because my husband had to go to work. Yes, I was a little sore, but it really was not as bad as I thought is was going to be. In fact, my doctor really encouraged me to go home and NOT be inactive. So taking care of the kids actually helped me to not just crawl in bed and sleep it off. My youngest son was still in diapers and I just set up a changing station on the floor because I was not allowed to lift him. I used to hear the same comments from my husband about not having enough willpower to eat smaller portions on my own. I decided I was having the surgery no matter what he thought. It has been 10 months and I've lost 65 lbs. I'm about 20 pounds from goal and already planning to have a tummy tuck and breast lift when I get to goal. I know these surgeries won't be as easy as Lap Band and I'm prepared to hire a nannny for a few weeks if I have to. My husband can't stop commenting on how great I look and how wonderful I'm doing with exercising, etc. I'm so glad that I didn't let his lack of encouragement and help stop me from doing this wonderful thing for myself. I would go ahead with the surgery. Just think how much easier it will be to find a great supportive guy after you lose your weight if you decide that you no longer want to be married. Just my 2 cents.
  6. I’m just at the start of my 6-month diet for insurance. I’m impatient to have the sleeve, but I’m trying to make the best of the wait and lose as much as I can before the surgery. I’m doing well on my low-carb diet, but exercise is a tough one for me. I’ve been trying to make myself do at least 15 minutes of activity daily (I know it isn’t much, but I’ve been sedentary for so long that 15 minutes is all I can do.) I have some chair exercises that my NUT gave to me, but I’d like to start getting out of the chair and using more of my body. I’ve found that I am ok following along with exercise videos on YouTube for 10-15 minutes, but I often have to modify the exercises into ones that I can do. Does anyone have any favorite exercise videos that they like to use, especially ones that might be better for someone at a higher weight?
  7. Ive been slowly cutting down on portions, cutting out my beloved diet coke, cutting out coffee and upping Water for the last month. I start my 10 day preop liquid in Wednesday. Ive lost 23lbs so far. No way Id be good mentally going cold turkey on everything. I did have a "bucket list" food that I needed one last time. Got a good pizza last night and had 4 slices after being good on 1000 calories for the last few weeks. I made myself chew chew chew forever, partially for practice and partially to savour my most favorite food in the world that I cant have again, atleast not for months. I think you have to start changing habits before hand so its less of a shock mentally Sent from my SM-G900P using the BariatricPal App

    Any bike suggestions?

I really love my Cirrus Sport with drop bar (ie "girl's bike). (With arthritis is my hips and knees, I just can't swing my leg over the seat, and my balance is not that great, so the drip bar is a really safe option for me. I love it.) It is a hybrid - not as skinny as a road bike, and has really comfortable handlebars that are very ergonomic. The gear shifters are thumb levers - very easy and ergonomic. Seat is good - padded and not as skinny as a road bike. I started riding again after maybe 40 years. It was a little scary - especially on a bike that I couldn't get on or off easily because of the top bar. I just bit the bullet and bought my own. I did a 52 mile race a few months ago and am gearing up for a 100 miler later this year. Biking is fun. It is not hard on the knees, it gives a real sense of freedom, and is just great all around exercise. Warning - The day you buy the bike is the cheapest day you own the bike! Then comes a helmet, car rack, lights, water bottles, spare parts bag, jerseys, shorts, shoes......................... never ends. I did find my jerseys and shorts at a thrift store for just $8=$10 - a steal. Found bike rack at the thrift store, as well, which saved at least $150. But then had to get the hitch put on my car.

  11. I had bypass at Mayo Clinic. They won't even do the sleeve unless medically necessary- it's just not as successful and the GERD issue is a big one. Hang in there and best of luck! SW 255 on 6/19/17

Tips for caring for kids after surgery?

  13. Oh thanks, Ladies. I was so afraid I was going to scare everybody off with that long diatribe. MissWilde, this is awesome. I hope you keep posting here because it will be great to go through this with someone who is on the same timeline as I. Fanny, thanks for the great info. I meant Clear Liquids, not full, you're right. And I guess it is more sore than actually painful. It has improved a great deal and it's certainly manageable. I think perhaps I had high (and unrealistic) expectations of going into surgery on Wednesday and being pain free and 96 lbs lighter by Friday. If it's worth having, it's worth fighting for, right? And I think you're right about the caffeine. I didn't think about that. I was a pretty heavy tea drinker prior to surgery as well as a fairly regular soda drinker. I quit drinking the week prior to surgery because I was really trying to lose 10 lbs pre-op. So it's been a good while since I've had any caffeine. I wonder how long that goes on and if I can get a workaround?

    3 days post-op: my experience

Oddly enough day 1 and 2 wasn't that bad, probably still high on pain meds. LOL Day 3-8 were challenging due to port pain, sore/swollen stomach, horrible gas, unable to sleep comfortably which added to my aggravation. I'm 10 days post op and I'm feeling almost back to normal. I'm back in school, working full time and most importantly---sleeping COMFY.

    Anyone have Dr Christopher Joyce?

Hi EllindaGreek, how are you doing? I see your going for a mini consult next week...did you get rid of the cold feet? It was suggested to do the Adkins ones but they also allow others. If you choose others they must have 15-40 grams of protein and less than 10 grams of carbs.
  16. I was planning a Gastric Sleeve procedure but was unable to due to Barret's. I had my RNY bypass on July 10 and everything has worked out great. I am down 50# and have decreased my risk of esophageal cancer, amongst other things! I was initially upset about having to change my plans bit once I got used to the idea and educated myself, I went for it. I am so glad that I did! Good luck!
  17. In a new position statement, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) and the American College of Endocrinology (ACE) have replaced the word “obesity” with “Adiposity-Based Chronic Disease” (ABCD). While that sounds like a clunky switch, the authors have laid out why a simple notion should be replaced with what they call a "complications-centric" approach to the diagnosis and treatment of excess body fat (adiposity). It's more complex than something like BMI. By making this change they have decided to use a new term that puts more emphasis on the chronic diseases that result from excess body fat. Here is a link to the article that discusses this change. http://acsh.org/news/2017/01/20/abcd-obesity-has-new-name-will-it-stop-epidemic-10751

    Golf Anyone?

This Sunday I will be 12 days post op and plan on playing golf. My dr. has given me the go ahead, but I want to see what others on this board think. Thanks (17 lbs in 10 days).
  19. Hey all-- My surgery date was 10/10, so I am more than three weeks post-op. I have been progressing very well, except that I am feeling completely drained. Not tired, but just lacking any energy. I know I have to "give it time" because I just had major surgery, but I stayed home doing nothing for three weeks healing up, and even though I wasn't doing much--zero energy. One thing I haven't seen is anyone talking about severe caloric restriction and its impact on how post-surgery patients feel. Like I said, doing great, lost 25 pounds so far, and expect (hope) to lose another fifty. But I am not taking in more than 500-600 calories a day. My NUT says that even when I am totally healed up the max will be 900-1000. That's a starvation diet, really. I mean, I don't feel starving at all, just...no energy! Anyone experience this and get over it in time, or as you ate more? I'm hopeful. You can call me "Low Energy Leslie"
  20. Surgery date is 10/16 SO EXCITED AND READY TO GET THE SURGERY DONE!!! ????????

    Tough Topic

You're going to be in great hands with Dr. Aceves & I echo crosswind in saying you are NOT going to die on the table. He is a great surgeon with many, many VSG operations under his belt and his experience will pay off for you in the long run. I thought about writing a letter to my children (10 and 7) only because I was worried about my plane crashing. I didn't have one ounce of fear about undergoing surgery. Not a single, solitary bit and this from a woman who lost her dad on the surgical table 7 years ago. He was very sick with heart disease and the operation was extremely risky and we expected complications anyway, but it still leaves a scar. I admit, the first surgery I had after he died scared the crap out of me because I was worried I would never wake up, too, but the happy juice/pill you get really does make you not care. I've had 5 more surgeries since then and the VSG was by far the easiest and least worrisome for me. Congrats on your surgery!
