  1. First, congratulations on your wonderful weight loss journey. You have made the physical part of WLS a phenomenal success! I'm a noob here. But I already know that a lot of marriages don't survive weight loss surgery. Marriages that fail do so for a lot of different reasons. It sounds to me like you are the one who's changing. That's not necessarily a bad thing or a good thing. And for now (either permanently or temporarily -- it's not clear yet) you want to change your life in some specific ways. But your husband is having a negative reaction. Put those two things together and it's something that could become a bad thing. You've surely read the same WLS boards I have. The saddest stories to me are the ones where the WLS partner "went wild" (their words, not mine) and enjoyed life in ways they had sorely missed when they were heavier, some for the very first time, "getting it out of their system." It seems to be a phase they are compelled to go through. For people already in committed relationships these changes usually cause or exacerbate problems in their marriage. A year or two later, some of these WLS patients realize they're now done with that phase. They realize the cost of their adventure was higher than they wish they'd paid. I would gently suggest that it's time for old-fashioned communication between you and you husband. You both need to find out what your respective bottom lines are. And you need to communicate those clearly and respectfully. Then you two must negotiate what you're willing to pay for what you really want. A counselor might be able to help you have this conversation. As someone who's been through this and seen even it in others, please be very careful about "winning." If both people don't win, the relationship won't last -- or worse, you will stay together and one or both of you will be miserable. I wish you the best in addressing this new phase in your marriage. Naturally, I have no idea what the best outcome for you is. Good luck, Ann
  2. Ok so my 1 year is in 2 weeks and I am 30 pounds from my goal and somehow I am ok with that. I am so thankful to each of you for your honesty as it tells me that I am still successful. I am also thrilled that I see many of you from other forums and your name's are familiar to me. I have not lost anything in the last 2 months and again I am ok with that. I am going to try the 5:2 method and keep sticking to my guns. I have found that reading these posts help me and actually I haven't read any in two months and haven't lost any weight so I believe that reading this forum daily helps me more than I knew. HONESTY is going to be my key to success and i hope to stay honest with myself to lose 30 more and maintain. It actually feels great not losing as I haven't gained either so maybe this is a final stand via a long plateau. I am so happy to be a part of this community.

    Sleep Apnea & Lapband

Hi, there, it sounds to me like someone is not explaining things very well. I can only tell you from my own experience. Like you, I am still preop. About ten years ago, my children told me that they could hear me snoring through my bedroom door and theirs. I mentioned it to my ENT while I was being seen for another reason. He sent me home with a pulse ox monitor (to measure how much oxygen was circulating through my body while I slept.) Mine came back around 70% which is not really compatible with life for any length of time. I was referred on to a sleep specialist, had the overnight tests and behold I have sleep apnea. I would never sleep more than four hours at a time. Always tired. He recommended a cpap machine and I have been on one ever since. I feel so much better. Still only sleep about six hours at a time but that is a lot better than 4. My oxygen levels at room air still are barely over 90. For any procedure, I always have oxygen. I have never smoked in my life but was subject to a lot of second hand smoke. When I went for my surgical consult, I was told right off the bat to plan on bringing my machine to the hospital. I use it whenever I sleep, travel with it, whatever. I know I have to. It has helped me enormously and I will be anxious to see what happens after I lose weight. It can become your new best friend! Hang in there. All the best to you and please keep us posted on your progress. Melinda
  4. So this is my first time posting. Im 5'10 and my surgery was 8/26/13. My weight at surgery was 376 As of today im down 48lbs! Other ppl say they see it, I really cant. However my face is significantly smaller. Its soooo hard. Not the not eating part, but the way I feel. At times I wonder if this was the right thing to do. The numbers make me snap out of it lol. But my energy is sooo low its terrible. Im having problems with protein. The shakes make me gag... but hey it'll get better n i cant be mad at 48lbs in 26 days!

    wedding ring...

My wedding band actually cracked from having it resized several times after pregnancies and gaining weight etc. So it has been sitting in a box in my bureau for a couple of years. Just last month my husband suggested that I get it resized. We went together to the jewelers and jazzed up the band and I just picked it up last Friday. I feel like a new bride! I can't stop looking at my ring now! I'm so glad I did it. I am actually smaller than the original size too! Married 35 years this November.

5 Months Post Op With Pics!

You are the same height as me - I should b around 270 the day of surgery - hope my results are as good as yours. you look great!!! Can't quote using the phone but for your comment on still feeling big - I always feel bigger than most of my friends (even the ones "fluffier" than me) because I'm always the tallest. I'm sure as you continue to lose weight your mind will catch up and acknowledge that the girl staring back at her from the mirror is you!

You look absolutely amazing! Congrats on your weight loss!
  9. I had my Gastric Bypass in 2012 with Dr. Joseph Naim, MD, FACS at the Center for Surgical Treatment of Obesity in Long Beach, CA. He was trained by Dr Fobi who was at one time called Hollywood’s weight loss surgeon and considered the weight loss doctor to the stars, (Dr Fobi performed the Fobi Pouch Gastric Bypass got Jennifer Holiday, Etta James, and Roseanne Barr to name a few.) A little about me: I had my Fobi Pouch procedure, which is a variation of the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass, because I was well over 300 pounds and was facing needing a third lower back surgery. It was not advisable for me to get the third back surgery because 1) I was morbidly obese so there were health concerns especially with anesthesia and 2) The recovery from the procedure typically contributed to a substantial increase in my weight because I couldn’t really exercise enough for it to be beneficial without potentially/inevitably compromising the new back fusion. Dr. Naim is very direct and business like. He is a very proficient surgeon and the surgical procedure he performed on me went off without a hitch. I had problems adjusting initially and in that area Dr. Naim isn’t a very patient, hand holding type of doctor. But if you want a well performed Fobi Pouch procedure and have access to a support group, (especially if you know you need lots of advise and encouragement,) Then Dr Naim is your man.

Funny enough my fingers aren't super chubby. I haven't had surgery yet but I wear a 7-8, I can't imagine what my fingers look like once I lose the weight.

    wedding ring...

18 years ago my ring was a size 9. 10 years ago lost weight and resized to 7.5. Then a few years ago resized back up to 8.75. A few months ago took it down to a 6 and thought it would be good. It fell off my hand last night, guess one more sizing is in order!
  12. hello, i have had my band for 9 months, with no problems, 55 lb weight loss and have not had any fills, i was starting to get more reflux, and then finally a lot of pain on wed, turns out my stomach was obstructed, was able to have the old band 'tacked' back into place, which i was relieved, has anyone had this experience, and ultimately did you reach your goal?..i am nervous as i know the band is really not doing its 'job' right now, the doc said we could discuss a fill at the post op appt
  13. Hi there! I am considering getting either the lap band or Gastric bypass surgery. My doctor just sent the referal yesterday. I am 37 years old and have a load of health problems due to my weight. This is my deal; I have Diabetes, Cholestorol, knee and ankle problems and I have polycstic ovaries which prevent me from ovulating monthly thus having only one child (very thankful for him) I am mostly doing this for my health and energy level basically my quality of life. I dont expect to jump into a swimsuit anytime soon as I know I will have lots of extra sagging (not looking forward to that) Based on what I have been reading I may just opt for the lap band it doesnt sound so invasive. Please bear with me as I have LOTS of questions and have never participated in a forum; Here are my questions to you: :mad2: Lap band VS Bypas surgery ? What is a FILL? How soon did you hear from the Richmond location after the dr referal? How long b4 your surgery was actually scheduled? what are the regrets if any, you had after the surgery? any suggestions on things you should have considered before the surgery? How was Kaiser, were they sensitive to this issue? Did you go to many appointments, I live in Sacramento so I'm concerned about that Did anyone have marriage problems after? I'm afraid because I have always been chunky and my husband met me this way and my son loves me this way too (just not being so unhealthy) he says, I feel like a comfy pillow. I asked my husband how he will feel about this frastic change but he said whatever I need to do to get healthy because he is also concerned. and I know my son would rather I be healthy than always have aches and pains becuase he worrys about losing his mommy. Please HELP ! sorry for the long post but I have many questions and would like the honest truth not from a Doctor who hasnt experienced it.
  14. I just had a fill yesterday bringing me to 9 cc's in the 10 cc Inamed Band. I have gotten fills, gotten restriction, lost restriction, lost weight. gained weight. At the times that i did have good restriction, I would stay satisfied for at least 5 hours. I think my major problem with restriction is that my doctor follow a schedule for fills that in my opinion is too far apart. I would get a fill and for like 3 weeks would be great then lose my restriction (completely at times) and begin to gain the 10 lbs or so that I lost. Yesterday. Dr Fill  says that he thinks that this one may be the one. Before this, at 8 cc's I was able to eat an entire "diner" wrap. I was getting full quicker then pre band but not enough to lose weight.
  15. I started cardio about 12 days post op. Weights I started about 3.5 weeks post op. Both after given clearance by my doc. So I'd get the ok before you do, especially with the emboli

    Newbie

Hello everyone. I decided to have weight loss surgery in August. So I met with a surgeon and I decide on the sleeve. My insurance company requires me to do several things prior to being approved. I finished my three month stint with the nutritionist and have my psych evaluation set for 12/6. I got annoying news, today, from the surgeons office that I need a pulmonary clearance test before they send out paperwork to the insurance company. I have that set for 12/21. I was hoping to be approved by then. But oh well. Does anyone have Federal Blue cross and blue shield that is post surgery that could give me an estimate on how long it took for approval. Any other tips are greatly appreciated.
  17. In complete agreement with above posters. Meet with Bariatric surgeon and team. Learn all that you can about the procedure. I was able to gain information by following medical twitter and the bariatric thought leaders that post some of the latest data on metabolic changes that surgery brings. Also I found a great podcast by Reeger Cortell ARNP, called "Weight Loss Surgery Podcast". In the past 6 months I only experienced one unprofessional encounter, and that was with Cardiologist during appointment for cardiac clearance. Was scheduled for this next Monday but got the call today to postpone 2 weeks as I'm just getting over bronchitis. Reset for 11/4. Good luck to you! Let us know how things are going!
  18. It sounds from your past experiences that the sleeve would be nost helpful for you. It will force you to change i think you will be hapoy with the sleeve. My mom had the lap band seceral years ago and had complications from the band and had to take it out she gained back alot of the weight and wish she could have the feeling the bad gave her. I dont believe the balloon is worth the money and with you bouncing back to your old ways and gaining then losing i dont think the balloon would be best. Personally i feel like the sleeve which is minimally invasive will push u to lose the weight. And then u will belosing so fast and be so happy you did it.

    Felling frustrated.

You are doing great! 20lbs in a month! When I went for my 1 month appt. I was losing slow and the dr. Said it is normal to even gain a few pounds then. The body hits a stall for a bit. Everyone loses at different rates but looks like you are doing wonderful. It helps if you fill in your weight stats too so people with similar stats can help you more. The stall will pass just keep up the good work.

    Felling frustrated.

I am experiencing the same thing. Surgery on 10/1 and I have lost 14 lbs since then but been stalled the last 7 days. I am following all the guidelines too but weight not budging. I went up my 2 week post op apt yesterday and they told me to get off the scale for this first 2 months because I should not be focused on weight loss at this stage yet. This first few months should be about progressing through the diet phases to get back to solids, getting familiar with what foods you can tolerate now post opp, and healing. I don’t like this answer because I currently weigh everyday because it makes me keep myself accountable. Trying to make this mental shift for my own sanity though because I want this to be successful. I do still feel like I am losing inches even though the scale I s not budging. Are you measuring?

how exciting for you... All I can tell you is that the lapband has been the best decision I have made regarding my weight... I am now down almost 50 lbs since my jan 15 surgery.. My blood sugar is around 85 each am.. blood pressure is good, I will have my labs done next week to see where my cholesterol stands..I want to get off of all my meds.. I do not feel deprived, I feel in control ... I can actually walk and swim and ride my horse and I am going to the gym every day... Good Luck to you and you will find lots of support here...

    Just got approved

First things first; congrats!! Before surgery you may want to go grocery shopping if your doctor has you on a certain pre-op or post-op diet. You will probably be put on liquids then soft foods before you can eat normal foods again. Look around the forum for some things to buy to get your through those phases. You may also want to look around for some post-op "band friendly" recipes. There are a lot out there; many of them are tasty! Buy some Gas-X strips to use post-op. Otherwise I'd just spend time looking on the forums, especially the post-op forum, to see what to expect. Pre-op may be helpful as well. As for weight-loss, it varies per person, so there is no number to really give you. Some people lose early on post-op, some don't. Keep in mind that the first 6 weeks are about healing; I can't stress that enough. It seems every day there is someone asking why they aren't losing when they are only 4 weeks post op, or 2 weeks post op. Your body needs to heal and for 6 weeks it will do so. During this time I'd advise staying off the scale and really focusing on allowing your body to heal. Take some before pictures and take your measurements! You'll be surprised how many inches you lose.

  24. I read the thread about who has their gall bladders versus who doesn't, and I just don't get it. WHY do so many people have gall bladder troubles? Does it flare up with lots of weight loss? Thanks sara
  25. untfluter

    WHY gall bladder trouble??

It is very common w/significant weight loss to have your gall bladder go bad... so much so that there are a lot of surgeons who will take it out when they do your procedure to keep you from having to have an additional surgery should it go bad. Fortunately I had mine out years ago so I didn't have to worry about it...
