I have found the PCPs sometimes are not up to date on education regarding bariatric surgery and even bariatric issues. Our program has a training class that PCPs in the area can take to be better informed. My PCP was not against my surgery but she wasn't 100% for it. She signed off on it but she kept asking me if I was sure I wanted to go the surgical route and offered to put me on a structured diet a few time. On the other hand my OBGYN was ecstatic about it and couldn't stop singing the praises of bariatric surgery.

It's booked for Nov. 10th - 9 days from today! I can hardly believe it's going to be so soon! I meet with my primary care physician tomorrow to get surgical clearance and to get one more blood test (for clotting). Then Friday I see the bariatric surgeon - and start on my no carb diet. I'll get more info at that time too about what to expect. Here are the questions I have for my surgeon on Friday: What brand of Lap-Band is this? What time is my surgery scheduled for? How long does the surgery actually take? What happens if you run into issues in my belly with scar tissue adherance from a prior tummy tuck? What do I need to stock up on prior to the surgery? Is there anything you can tell me to make my ride home from the hospital and sleeping at home more comfortable / less painful? Can I have my pain meds sent to my pharmacy prior to the surgery - so I can have them at home when I return? How many days do you think I'll need to have other people take care of me? What kind of care will they need to give me? Do I need to buy protein shakes? What brand do you recommend? How long after surgery will I be visiting with you again? What is the typical amount of band fills it normally takes for a person to get to the right place? I've heard I'm going to be tired for a while - no energy - because my body has so much less fuel to run it and my body's still big. Is this true? What kind of issues are typical after surgery? What kind of issues should I call you immediately for? What kinds of issues should I go to the E.R. for? Do I need to take vitamin supplements? Is there a support group you recommend that I connect with?

Bariatric vs. Unury
Redo2017 replied to ToughButFair's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have not tried the Bariatric Fusion, but I LOVE the Unjury Chicken flavor. My only criticism is that it is a bit salty. I just add a little more water than is called for and it solves that problem. -
Hi all, I was wondering if anyone has tried both Bariatric Fusion and Unjurys chicken soup powders. I tried Bariatric Fusion and find it really gross. It tastes milky and salty, but not at all chickeny. Does Unjury taste better? The same? Thanks!

11 weeks post op and having trouble keeping any real food down

Lots of times bariatric docs don't seem to like taking on other surgeons' patients. That's why I recommend switching types of docs.... but you can try... -
Hiatus Hernia Diagnosed 20 Months After Gastric Sleeve Op
GassyGurl replied to PureDarkness's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Can they actually repair it? I was under the assumption they wouldn't /couldn't repair after Bariatric surgery. But I don't know why. Sent from my XT1254 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Premiere vanilla and strawberry hurt my stomach, the chocolate doesn’t bother me and I drink it frequently. I also like body fortress in chocolate and bariatric advantage. I never liked chocolate but for some reason I can’t tolerate vanilla protein If you are looking for a more savory option unjury chicken soup is good. Also syntrex has fruit flavors.

I have severe reflux issues I treat with my GI DR for that and I am being converted to bypass because of it (by a bariatric surgeon). I would get to a dr as soon as you can as there are other medications you can be on that may help you. I started off with Barrett’s esophagus and esophageal ulcers. Which have now gotten much worse due to reflux and has done permanent damage to my esophagus. It’s better to have a dr treat you as they may have a stronger dose of a medication or a different type that will stop it right away. I suggest not eating before bed, sleep with your head elevated and avoid caffeine, Citrus and other highly acidic foods. If you’re in a new state I would suggest starting with a GI dr or calling your first surgeon to see if he can suggest someone or the type of dr you would need. Acid reflux can do permanent damage and is so painful definitely try to get some medical attention soon. I’m on omeprazole, dexilant, Pepcid and carafate. The dexilant seemed to help a lot at first if you do talk to a dr you may want to ask them about that medication. Best of luck!

My surgeon's office called me today to inform me that my insurance had approved my surgery. The surgeon's office told me last week that as soon as I had all my pre-approval requirements done, they'd submit it all to my insurance, and it would take up to 7 business days to hear back. That if they wanted any further tests, they'd find out at that time what else was necessary. I have an appointment in 2 days to visit my primary care doc for my pre surgical approval. So I figured the surgeon would likely submit my paperwork for approval next week. Nope - they did it already and I'm already approved! They still want the primary care doc's approval, but they know that'll come. I'm cleared!!! I was already given surgery dates - I'm having my surgery in 10 days! On Friday I go to visit my bariatric surgeon one last time, and he'll put me on the pre surgical low carb diet. Then I'm on my way to surgery in a week. I cannot believe it! I'll be LOSING weight this holiday season! Yippee!!! FYI - my insurance required that I do six months of a hospital nutritionist before qualifying. After that it was likely the same things anyone else has to do for surgery: Lab work: CBC, CMP, TSH, PT/PTT, Urinalysis Cardiology: EKS, Cardiac clearance from cardiologist Radiology: Upper GI with double contrast Routine Wellness Screening: Mammogram, Pap Smear Misc.: Primary Care Physicial Clearance, Pulmonary Clearance (which in my case included a breathing test, and showing them my recent sleep study results, and giving them the chip from my CPAP machine for reading). Psych evaluation. I'm almost there!

I am stocked up on protein water of various brands, flavors, and quantity of protein. I've only tried a couple since I heard your taste buds may change anyhow. Figured I'll just chance it after the fact. The ones I did try were really sweet so I watered them down. I've been using the Bariatric advantage shakes for at least 1 meal a day since my lap band was removed in February to try to keep from gaining weight until sleeve surgery. I like them so I hope I don't hate them after surgery. Good luck everyone! Since I'm on the first day of the month feel free to ask me questions if you have any before your turn! Hopefully I'll be able to pop in and say hey tomorrow night or Thursday. Where's my Nov. 1 buddy? Good luck Sunshine! I hope everything goes well and is relatively pain free for you. When I had the lap band put in and removed the pain was more like I had done too many crunches at the gym but I may have a high pain tolerance. There was no pain at the incision sites. Sitting up from a laying down position was the worst of it. Otherwise sitting and walking and sleeping were fine. I never even took the pain meds they gave me. Not sure but I'm gonna guess having half my stomach removed rather than just having something implanted might be a little more sore. Fingers crossed. Hi, I was sleeved December 2015. I’ve lost 110 pounds. Very thankful for my sleeve. Problem is that in the past few months I’ve started having really bad reflux. Sometimes I wake up from a dead sleep to stomach acids up in my throat! I use Prilosec daily plus Zantac twice a day and tums in between. I moved a few months ago so I live 2 states away from my bariatric surgeon and I have new insurance. Just wondering if I should find a new bariatric surgeon or just go to a regular doctor about my issues. Have others had reflux/GERD issues? Thanks in advance.

I also had a very bad experience discussing the sleeve surgery with my previous PCP. I literally left in tears. The doctor was raising her voice at me every time I would ask her why she did not think it was a good idea and all she would respond with "you don't need it." My almost one year old daughter was with and she started crying because of the way she was yelling at me. But, since my previous PCP was unwilling to even have a discussion (I even tried to follow up with with office multiple times). I found myself a new PCP. I honestly think it is about perpective and education when it comes to recommending bariatric surgery. I'm so sorry to hear you had a difficult visit. But maybe when you follow up you can help educate your doctor a little more. If not, there are other doctors - I don't say that lightly either because I really don't think shopping around for doctors is entirely right, but you know yourself better than anyone and if you think this is in your best interest then you should find a doctor to support you. I really wish you the best of luck!

I’ve seen many posts about Ramos Kelly saying he’s great, but last night I was watching post op YouTube videos and on Laura’s VSGtube channel, she posted a series of live videos (like minutes before I got to her page). She said Dr. Kelly screwed up her sleeve to mini bypass surgery, did it completely wrong. She was dying in her hotel room and no one would pick up their phone. Then Dr. Kelly’s wife proceeded to send her all these really nasty offensive messages, she even showed her phone on the camera to prove it. I felt so bad, she has me so scared to get the surgery ANYWHERE in fear this might happen to me. She ended up trekking it back to San Diego and checked into a bariatric center there, where they realized she was literally dying and they opened her up and fixed the botched surgery. She has been in the hospital for a week and a half now in San Diego recovering. When I woke up this morning, she deleted the videos. I don’t know what’s going on but I feel like this information needs to be on this board.

Are these the ones sold here in the bariatric store?

My doc was adding veg to my diet at 10 days out as my protein intake was sufficient (90+ per day) though still a little short of my goal of 100-110 to maintain my then current lean mass. It's a big YMMV thing. On the main topic, I ignored carb counts, only seeking the best nutrition for the non-protein segment of my diet at the time irrespective macro counts. I started into the bariatric game 14-15 years ago when my wife was getting seriously into it (she was number one on the runway with her higher weight and more significant comorbidities,) which was still in the transition between yesterday's low fat fad and today's low carb fad. For the sake of the insurance mandated 6 month diet thing, we decided to go long term and work on improving overall nutrition rather than any miracle weight loss diets, and let the loss fall where it may - long term sustainability is much more important than any short term weight loss. I wound up losing about a third of my excess weight in six months or so and decided just to go into a holding pattern while we worked on getting my wife onto the table, ultimately going self-pay a year or two later. I kept tweaking my diet, making some progress here and there but little additional net loss, though did maintain that original loss for several years. Once our insurance started covering the sleeve, and it was apparent I was not going to sustainably lose significantly more, I signed up for the sleeve. As I had already effectively worked into a WLS maintenance lifestyle with my wife, there was no reason to make substantial dietary changes other than what was needed to support the calorie restriction. As popular as it was (and still is,) I couldn't afford the prospective side effects of low carb dieting, so I kept things as balanced as reasonably possible within the protein and calorie limits; thankfully, our doc had never jumped onto the low carb bandwagon, either (low sugar, simple carbohydrate and junk food - absolutely, but no arbitrary carb limits.) That worked fine, and still does 6-7 years later, though about 1000 calories higher. Establishing good fundamental habits beat miracle diets every time.

My curiosity kicked-in so I did a quick look-up on this question and here's what I found: Smoking increases your risk of experiencing the following surgical complications: Blood clots Pneumonia Marginal ulcers Surgical wound infection Smokers have almost a 30 percent complication rate after weight loss surgery, which is astoundingly higher than the surgical complication rate for non-smokers. This information came from this website: https://www.flowersbariatriccenter.com/patient-resources/preparing-for-bariatric-surgery/why-it-matters-to-stop-smoking-after-weight-loss-surgery/ I haven't checked all the sources or done any cross-referencing, so this might not be 100% accurate, but it looks like pretty solid information. Hope this helps!

PCP discouragement
Kristi Jacobs replied to NanaB73's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Very interesting read. I have an appointment with my PCP the 14th. She herself has had Bariatric surgery so am not expecting a NO from her on that but not sure how she will feel about Mexico. I like the idea of lab work and EKG before going. I am 63 , diabetic, former smoker and I want to ensure I am healthy enough to have the surgery before I get there and find for whatever reason I cannot. -

Here's another: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/26708682 Maybe this is part of why bariatric surgery can be so effective? If our gut bugs are this important.. and we're busy using antibiotics, C-sections, antibacterial soaps and hand sanitizers, pasteurization, refined, fiber deficient, processed, chemical laden... It's no wonder 70% of the US population is overweight! -
PCP discouragement
trailtramper replied to NanaB73's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was sure my pcp would say no, so I found a new one who didn’t. My hospital couldn’t refer me, but they did tell me the names of some pcps who refer patients to their Bariatric surgery center -
I have spoken with my PCP for the past 8 years about weight loss options and he is against them all. pills and surgery. I actually need to see him in a couple of weeks to get cleared so I'm curious what he will say. His feeling is that all these tools are temp and will go back to hold habits so need to change the habit. After speaking with a bunch of people in the bariatric world as well as other specialists, I think he is not as educated on the specifics of that world. He is a generalist and I don't think he could be up on all the data and studies on weight loss. We go to specialist for a reason. Good luck!

Hello! I finally have a surgery date after 2 years of diets, nutritionists, psychiatrists, insurance companies, and lawyers. My conversion from lapband to RNY is scheduled for November 20th. To say I'm excited is an understatement! For the last two years I've been taking a multi-vitamin, B12 (sub-lingual) and Vitamin D3 so I'm in the habit. My issue has been with getting my calcium in. At first I tried the Citracal (sp?) pills but they were hard to swallow with my lapband. Next I tried the Bariatric Advantage caramel chews but they were so chalky I couldn't stand them. Most recently I tried Solaray's calcium citrate which is this huge chewable tablet. I thought the orange flavor would make it bearable but I couldn't stand it. Makes me shudder. Any recommendations on other forms of calcium citrate that y'all take? I'm starting to get a little desperate.

Calling all October sleevers!!
Rainbow_Warrior replied to Detroit_25's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
1. If you have MS Word or Apple Pages, open one of them. 2. Set your page to LANDSCAPE. 3. (Optional) Choose a coloured background. 4. Drag photos from the file manager onto the WORD page or PAGES page. 5. Using only a single corner of each photo resize each to fit an appropriate height and width. (Trying to get them all the same height is usually best.) 6. Add any appropriate text. 7. Save your document. 8. (Optionally) take a screen shot of it. 9. Upload to Bariatric Pal. HERE'S THE ONE I MADE ABOUT THREE WEEKS AGO BEFORE SURGERY. -
Calcium Citrate pills - how long out?
Samscoolmama replied to TBGoat's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I take two Bariatric Advantage calcium chews a day. It's wonderful to chew something and they taste great! Lol -
Hopefully they are just giving you space in which to recover. But, if it doesn't turn out to be the case, I feel certain you'll make some new friends with whom your new lifestyle will better mesh. You may find exercise buds, or friends at a bariatric support group. Maybe you'll take up a new hobby.. No matter what, this is your time to work on YOU.
