    90% vegetarian?

    Hamburgers are gross

What makes a good burger in my opinion is all the good toppings. Without the lettuce, tomato, onions, cheese, sauces, and bun; all you have left is just boring and quite frankly DISGUSTING meat. Post surgery, that's all I really have room for in a hamburger, and I just hate them now. in fact, I am now 90% vegetarian. Anyone else have a former favorite food they now find gross?
  4. @@Hipigrl welcome to sleeveland sorry about all your physical issues/surgeries with your back, foot etc they should improve gradually as you loose more weight initial 50 lb pre-op weight loss is/was great another 24 lbs post op!! you are doing great!!! continue to read the board and you will get more and more good suggestions (Vitamins etc) at the end of the only listen to your NUT!!! (me too of course) i take the bariatric vitamins these are "horse" pills, but i manage no problem some others take chewable vitamins (flinstones)?? ask your NUT for help, suggestion on what vitamins to buy ask for help with Protein choices too "vegetarian not a vegan" don't know the difference Peanut Butter eggs (can you eat?) glad you eat/like yogurt i love Fage 0% plain greek yogurt 100 calories (5 3/4 oz) i add in one sweet and low 8 blueberries (yes i count them ) mix everything together, yum yum this gives my 18 gr of protein many others eat light and fit dannon yogurt cottage cheese ever popular Protein Bars many buy the Quest bars they are very good 20 gr of protein but they can be addicting (to me, they are so yummy) calories about 180-200 cheese is great for protein is fish ok for you?? tuna fish, baked haddock?? there are probably others here that are vegatarians i always used milk with my Protein shake pre-made (with milk) a shake has 20 gr of protein my GNC has 25 gr protein but.......you can mix the powdered shake with Water i've heard you can also add some powdered protein into various foods (i don't remember what "they" said - cuz i never did that) but it sounds like a good idea helping to get more protein in if you are allowed to drink coffee - some people put in you are to a great start keep it up for the rest of your healthier, happier, longer life having your beautiful baby is a great motivator to get/stay healthy good luck kathy
  5. I have been "heavy" my entire life, but I started getting morbidly obese about 15 yeas ago after a back injury. I had two back surgeries, first one 8/2007, second one in 11/2009. I also broke my left ankle (for the 5th time) in 10/2010. After a major foot surgery in 3/2011, I decided to go for the sleeve. About a month out from surgery, I got pregnant and abandoned my WLS plans for the time being. I had the baby (best thing ever!!) and got back on track for surgery in October of 2013. I then caught the NORO virus from my kid and spend two days sitting on the toilet and vomiting into the waste basket. That freaked me out so much that I backed off from the surgery. My back and foot pain was getting worse (one of the five screws in my foot/ankle had broken and wow, the pain has been intense!) and all the doctors were telling me it would never get better until I lost about 100 lbs. at least. At the time, I was about 330. The doctor for my foot told me that he would have to take out all the pins, put in thicker ones, and reinforce the area with steal plates. This did not sound like it was going to help get me out of pain. So, back to the bariatric surgeon. I started with this again in February of 2015. My doc put me on a diet pill to help with appetite suppression, and I lost almost 50 lbs. from March 2015 - June 2015. It took a while to get all of the insurance requirements met, but it was finally approved, and my surgery was on July1. This is my 4th week post-op, and while it has not been easy, I would not go back. I had the sleeve because I did not want to have as many issues with malnutrition as I have heard can happen with bypass. I know that I will eventually get to eat real food again, just not nearly as much, and I am so happy with the weight loss. The biggest issue I am having is getting my Protein. I am a vegetarian and the idea of drinking milk repulses me. I am not a vegan, will eat cheese and yogurt, it is just milk that grosses me out. Soy milk was not something I wanted to try, but I find the light vanilla and light chocolate is palatable. I am still experimenting with different protein supplements, but I feel confident I will eventually find one that I can get down. I have found a few suggestion on this forum that give me hope. :-)
  6. My Protein is regularly between 85 - 100 and occasionally higher. I supplement at least one meal a day with unflavored protein powder. I make a Protein shake before my AM workout, and on occasion I will drink anywhere from a half to a whole bottle of Isopure protein ice tea throughout the day. Otherwise my protein come from plant based foods, eggs and cheese. One of my favorite things to eat is TVP. Textured vegetable protein. I buy Bob's Red Mill brand. A quarter cup dry will yield half a cup when reconstituted. 80calories 7carbs, 0fat, 12gms protein, 2gms sodium, 3gms sugar. I add it to Soups or sometime throw it into the food processor with veggies and make my own veggie burgers. It give a similar mouth feel of that meaty texture and may make it easier for those transitioning to a vegetarian diet.

    Vegetarian?!?

Some problem! I'm at 4 months, I can't eat no meat or chicken. Trying to look at a vegetarian eating plan
  9. Sounds like we are in a similar boat!!! Except...I know my PCP will not want to give me the okay! He believes that everyone can lose weight by just becoming a vegetarian!!! I'm pretty sure he will NOT want to give me clearance for WLS,luckily I don't believe my insurance requires PCP approval, only medical clearance. My PCP is in the same network as the surgeon I want to use for surgery so my surgeon can already see all my medical records because it's all one record. I have an appointment to meet my surgeon for the 1st time first of August and (routine followup) at the end of August with my PCP so please update this post on how things go with your PCP!! I may need some tips on how to get around a uncooperative PCP!!! Good Luck!
  10. As of Today it has been 3 months since my surgery and according to the guideline that my doctor gave me I should be on solid foods. I can eat solids but only certain things. I cannot seem to be able to eat rice, noodles, eggs, bread, or any type of meat, if I attempt to I throw up (I throw up alot). Does anyone know if that is normal?? I am thinking of becoming a vegetarian, bc it seems like I can eat black bean burgers, but not regular hamburgers. When I go to chipotle I get black Beans, veggies, and guacomole and I am ok. Dr said I could be lactose intolerant for 3 to 6 months, I cannot seem to tolerate, eggs, milk, butter, cream. his really sucks, Luckily I found a Protein shake that is lactose and sugar free made by Lean Body (on the Go) and it has 25gms of protein.

What do you guys think I'm doing wrong?

Carbs are not the enemy. Processed carbs are. In fact good carbs can fuel your workouts. The bad carbs are highly processed and refined things. Typically the so called white carbs: breads, pastas, etc... Carbs from fruit, veg, legumes are a good thing. My carbs are almost always high and I have been losing steadily.I am vegetarian and most of my Protein is from plant based sources. Also fruit and veg will help you poop. Good bowel movements also aid in weight loss. There is no rush to lose. In fact a slower weight loss gives your skin a bit more time to recover and may decrease the amount of sagging skin you end up with. Your calories might be a bit high. I just started eating 800 -1000 at 10mths out. Prior to that I kept them n the 850 range. I am 51 and post menopausal.

    Pureed foods, really?

I cannot wait til I can have eggs or vegetarian re fried beans. It all sounds like a dream!
  14. I am vegetarian and deathly allergic to seafood. Highly processed foods tend to trigger my allergies. My Protein comes from Beans, tofu, seitan, dark green veg, grains, nuts, dairy (mostly cheese and yogurt) & eggs. I don't drink/like cow's milk, but I do eat greek yogurt. I prefer FAGE 0%. I also supplement with whey Protein powder. It takes being creative, but I have no problem keeping my protein between 85 - 100 gms. My carbs are often high, but as long as they aren't coming from "white" or heavily refined sources I don't worry about them. I am also allergic to artificial sugars and stevia. I don't often add sugar to my foods. I do eat fruit several times a week. When I do add sugar use either real sugar or raw honey. At 10mths I keep my calories between 800 - 1000 a day and work out 5 - 6 days a week. @@pookybear - You could try having Meatless Monday's with your boyfriend. Look for meaty textures like portabello mushroom and filling grains like quinoa and farro.

    Vegetarian?

@@B-52, I can understand the issues with chicken. I'm the same way in that, if it's not prepared just right, it's not going down. I can eat beef and pork as long as it's not overcooked. However, since having my band, I've totally changed my lifestyle and eating habits and, as part of that, have avoided eating those meats simply because they're not very healthy. And now that I've stayed away from them for so long, I find I just don't like them anymore. And I don't care for chicken either. This is why I'm considering a vegetarian lifestyle. I just don't see any point in forcing myself to eat foods I don't like anymore, ya know? I did talk to my surgeon about it. He said he wouldn't recommend it for everyone and he thinks it will be difficult for me to get enough protein but told me if I wanted to give it a try that he would be supportive as long as I make sure I get at least 60 grams of protein a day. I think I can do that easily. I can add quinoa to my diet. I can also add chia seeds, which are high in protein and can be added to oatmeal, yogurt, salads, etc. There are high protein milk varieties now that are ultra filtered, like Fairlife, which has 13 grams per 1 cup serving. I can use that to make my protein shakes and I'm more than halfway to my 60 grams without even eating anything. Then of course there's cheese, cottage cheese, peanut butter, nuts, beans. Right now, what I've decided to do is is to completely give up all red meat and pork for a few months and see how that goes. Once I get through the next few months without those, as long as I'm doing okay with getting my protein in and not feeling like I'm missing out, I'll cut out chicken and eventually I may cut out fish. I'm ok with keeping the milk products, eggs, and cheese in my diet though so that makes things easier.
  16. I've been looking into this myself and while I haven't made the jump yet, I've come to the conclusion that I don't think it will be as difficult to get the protein in as I previously thought. Quinoa is high in protein and is a complete protein so it's a good addition. It essentially takes on the flavor of whatever you cook it with. Chia seeds are high in protein and can be added to yogurt, oatmeal, salads, etc. If you are doing vegetarian and not vegan, you can still have milk, eggs, cheese, cottage cheese. There are actually higher protein milk varieties now. The best I've seen is made by Fairlife. It has 13 grams of protein for a 1 cup serving. Kroger's carbmaster milk is 11 grams per 1 cup serving. I plan to use Fairlife milk for my protein shakes and to make my oatmeal with. Speaking of oatmeal, Quaker makes instant oatmeal that has 10 grams of protein per serving. Add some chia seeds and use milk instead of water and it's even higher! Greek yogurt is also a good choice and you can add Nature Valley protein granola to up the protein content there. You just have to look for ways to add protein to what you're already eating as you eliminate the meat from your diet.
  17. Right now I only eat poultry and tuna for meat. The only reasons I haven't already gone completely vegetarian are that I haven't quite figured out how to get in all my protein without meat, and my boyfriend pretty much eats the same things that I eat and I don't want to force him to go vegetarian (also, he is not a fan of veggies. he will eat some, but not happily). Has anyone dealt with these dilemmas? I know there are plenty of choices for plant-based proteins, but maybe seeing some examples of meals will help ease the anxiety a little. What are some things you make for vegetarian meals? Especially meals that can be made for both of us and I can add meat to his and not mine. The cost of buying double the food (meals for him and meals for me) is also a worry of mine. I was planning to try it out for this week when we went grocery shopping this weekend, but I totally chickened out. I need help lol.
  18. I trust mine but I have had several horrible nutritionist in the past. Prior to looking into WLS I saw 3 separate nutritionist. One insane lady kept asking me to eat chicken breast even after I had explained I was vegetarian. The worst one was one I was sent to by my endocrinologist. Once she started telling people it was okay to drink diet soda, I knew I was done with her. I then saw a holistic nutritionist who I really liked. Unfortunately her practice was nearly 2 hours away and she was too pricey for my budget. Finding a program that was willing to actually have a conversation with me about food options and work with my allergies & vegetarianism was a deal breaker. I don't like to eat a lot of processed and artificial foods no matter what the calorie count. I needed someone who understood and could accept that. If I felt that wasn't going to happen I would have kept researching programs. I do think you we need to take some responsibility and do a little research on our own, but I expected to have a reasonable conversation with my nutritionist. I like and trust the person I have now, but I understand why many don't. Speaking for my self, I am limited in what knowledge I can share in an online forum. When someone post that they aren't losing but they are following a good eating plan, however they also have medical issues, I think the wise thing to do is direct them to their medical team or nutritionist. It's not a cop out, it's just understanding the limitations of how much support you can provide in an online forum like this.

    What Are Your Food Ruts?

Well, I drink a protein shake EVERY morning. Mainly because my stomach is so tight in the morning I can't handle food. Trust me I tried two days ago and it didn't go well. I do like to switch it up for lunch and dinner though. I have some main "snack" type foods I eat if I can fit them into my tracker for the day like the kind bar. I try not to eat processed foods to often but I was stuck on the new meat and cheese roll-ups they sale. They are easy to cut up on some shredded lettuce for lunch. So at times I get in food ruts but I usually get sick of whatever it is. I have issues with changing my complete diet up like one week I was just juicing, the next week I was back to "normal" and then I was "vegetarian" for a week and then when I feel like my stomach is being stressed I will switch back to a few days of only protein shakes and a light dinner like today to give my stomach a rest. I'm all over the place but it works.

    Sleeve limitations

10 mths out and I have the stomach made of steel. There is no food I was eating pre-op that I can't eat now. However the amount I can eat have changed and because I value my health I take care with the choices I make. Do I have occasional treats? Yes, but my definition of occasional has changed. I have found I can eat a bite of cake and be satisfied. I have some guidelines. The main one is I bring nothing in the house that I cannot have around without binging. I am one of those who needs to keep a food diary. Not everyone does, but I'd recommend newbies keep one pre-op and at least a few months post op. I also plan for my indulgences. I have an active social life and I eat out a lot. I plan for those days and adjust the rest of my eating day accordingly. Because I am vegetarian a lot of my Proteins also come with carbs. Those carbs I do not worry about. I try to have most of my carbs in the mornings or afternoon when I am most active. I avoid most "white carbs" Things like Pasta, bread, crackers, white rice and refined sugars. I am allergic to artificial sweeteners so I use raw honey. I am careful to use it sparingly. There really is no one size fits all approach. Being successful takes being honest with your self and changing your relationship with food. It can no longer be your friend and source of comfort. Each day I work at eating well and getting in some form of physical activity. EVERY. DAY. The difference is I am happy and satisfied with eating very smalls meals. I enjoy going to the gym. Most of all I enjoy feeling healthier than I have in years.

    Vitamins and Post-Op Diet

I'd give it a 1½ - 2. I had a really easy time of it. My surgical course was uneventful, and I had no pain or infections. I am a vegetarian with severe food allergies. Pre-op I was already taking a multi-Vitamin and Biotin daily. Because of my food issues I was already using a food diary and I was used to watching what I eat. Post-op my Vitamins and supplements increased, but over time that has decreased as I returned back to a regular diet based on bloodwork results. At 10 mths I take a multivitamin 1x a day, Vitamin D, and Calcium. I was already drinking Water and thankfully have no issues drinking water post op. I workout 5 - 6 days a week and yes that is hard, but it's of my own choosing. Pre-op I worked out 3 - 4 days a week as long as I wasn't suffering from an allergy attack. Thankfully I have not been to the ER due to allergies in nearly a year! It may take some adjusting but this wasn't even close to tough.
  22. I don't know how it affects him but I was a vegetarian for 2 years and he was miserable. I ruined his life in his words. I ask him all the time and he never has an answer that makes sense. I am going to do this because I can't win no matter what I do. A simple diet throws him off.

    Vegetarian?

I would not call myself a True vegetarian....but once I hit the Green Zone with the Band, it became difficult to eat red meat... For years my Dr.'s, especially my cardiologist, were after me to cut back. So I took advantage of the situation and stopped eating meat altogether....that was over 4 years ago. Chicken has to be "Perfect" to go with my band, and unless I prepare it myself, it's hard to find chicken that tender. So I don't eat chicken all that much either. Free range chicken is best.

    Vegetarian?

Well I'm one month post op today and so far 90% of the meat I have eaten has come back up. So seriously thinking of being a vegetarian. Right now it doesn't even sound good to think about meat. However, the sucky sweet protein drinks sound gross to????

    Vegetarian?

I am mostly vegetarian. I eat lots of beans, tofu and almond milk. Also low fat string cheese. There are some pretty good veggie meat options, too, like burgers and hot dogs. I also supplement with protein shakes. I use
