We all went through the insurance required 7 months or so of nutrition counseling and weight management. Through out that whole process, I guess all I focused on was how thin I was going to be and not as much on my lifestyle changes. I am 3 weeks out and have had many thoughts of...what the heck have I done? I am on pureed now which is better than pure liquids, but I have major cravings every food commercial or even when I drive by the darn McDonald's. Weight loss has only been 14 pounds which seems ridiculous because I am probably only consuming 400-500 calories a day and exercising. I know it is done now and no going back, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I have buyers remorse. Anyone else feel this way?

8 months post op and still always hungry...
WhatATool:-) posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had RNY gastric bypass in august 2020. It’s true what they say, that wls is just a tool and you’re still going to have to work hard to get to your goals! But I’m super surprised that my hunger levels don’t seem to have changed very much. I feel hungry every couple hours, when I was hoping to be one of those people who didn’t think about food very often. My weight loss has slowed because of this, so I’m wondering if anyone else experienced this and has any tips. Thanks!- 1 reply

My psychiatrist strongly discouraged me from bypass due to drug malabsorption issues. So now I'm leaning towards VSG. I have GERD which is fairly well controlled by taking a PPI and an acid reducer. Is there any way to predict if the sleeve will make my GERD unmanageable? I guess now my choices are sleeve or no surgery at all, and frankly for other health reasons, and being 110 lbs overweight, I need to have surgery!! Thanks! I did a search on fb and found a couple with the name gastric bypass friends...which is your group? -
Hi, I have a bmi of 32,off on holiday next week so it is bound to rise over the two weeks away, my question is this,is there any way I can get a sleeve with this bmi, Ive been offered the band but really don't want it as there seems so many complications and horror stories Would it help my case if my mum and two sisters have developed type 2 diabetes and my dad has had to have a quadruple heart bypass? Anyone had the sleeve in uk with lower bmi and who did you go with? Any advice greatly welcomed x

strictures are pretty rare in sleeve patients (more common on bypass patients, but still, only about 5% of bypass patients get them) - although they're not unheard of. If it continues (after taking the advice of the people above), just let your clinic know.

Hello, I'm Robin. I'm 26 (almost 27) years old and I'm halfway through my journey to Gastric Bypass July 17th was my official halfway point for the 6 month supervised diet with my PCP. My husband, Denny is right behind me by a month so he'll be having his soon too I'm extremely nervous though, I've never had a major surgery (or any surgery for that matter) before. I just have to keep remembering that I'm doing this for my son. He'll be a year old in August (same day as me, yay same birthday ) Any tips? I've been trying to lose a little weight for the supervised diet, but I haven't lost anything...I've actually gained -

I think this message board is just what I needed. I had lap band surgery 4 weeks ago, and do not know anyone else who has had it. I do however know several ladies who have had gastric bypass. I really did my homework and easily decided banding was the best method for me. I am 5'7" and weighed 259 pounds on August 1, 2007. I began the pre-surgery Protein diet the next day and had to stick with it for 3 weeks due to scheduling of my surgery. As of Tuesay this past week I have lost 29 pounds since that August 1st weigh in. I do however need advice and support. Especially ideas of what to eat. I made a mistake last week and had Peanut Butter toast for Breakfast two days in a row and suffered tremendously before I figured out what caused the pain. Looking forward to advice.

When did food stop grossing you out?

Eating food is still a struggle for me. I'm 5 months post RNY gastric bypass surgery. Eating anything seems to hurt my stomach, and it seems like I can't even stand to smell food. Sent from my SM-N910T using the BariatricPal App -
Well had part of my revision done, Dr Alvarez couldn't do sleeve because my band had so much damage and a lot of scar tissue, now I can't wait for 4 months to go by to get sleeve done. Was disappointed to not get sleeve at same time but least I'm alive and well. 4 month wait will not kill me. Sent from my VS990 using the BariatricPal App

Hello everyone, I'm a complete newbie here, so allow me to introduce myself. My name is Tanya. I live in Alberta, Canada and I will be having a band to sleeve revision on January 27th of this month with Dr. Ariel Ortiz at the OCC. I was banded in November of 2008 and I did very well at first. I lost nearly 90 lbs and kept it off for a year and half and then decided to have a tummy tuck. I had been a smoker for 22 years and my TT surgeon urged me to quit. I've been quit now since July 22, 2011 and since then (and my TT) I have gained almost all the weight back!! I feel like a complete failure ???? I got my band defilled today and booked my flights and pretty much got everything I will need so I'm excited. At the same time though, I'm terrified. I'm so afraid to fail again. It's really nice to read these forums and see that everyone is doing so well. It gives me hope. Is there anyone else out there going to be at the OCC the same time???

Well, I have medicaid and I was originally considering gastric bypass because I had heard medicaid would pay for it but after speaking with my doctor and talking with medicaid, I found out that lap band is much safer and a better choice for me so the insurance thing isn't really an issue so far. But my doctor had told me I needed atleast 6 months of documented obesity in order for them to accept me? Then I have to have a mental and physical evaluation.. is that standard?

On the fence-both surgeries have things I can't take.
carol285 replied to renniemommietoo's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I know the financial concerns are a huge factor & goodness knows I couldn't have had the band surgery if my insurance didn't pay for it BUT I think the most important factor of which weight loss surgery a person selects needs to be life & eating style. What are your biggest food issues. For instance if you are a huge ice cream or milk shake junky the band will do little to stop you from over doing it on them where bypass adds a sugar reaction component. I do understand some banded people have "dumping" reactions to sugar but not a big number. Either surgery requires much user work so our head food issues need to be worked on no matter what. It is a very tough choice, I agree with a previous poster about the seminars attend several if needed until you feel comfortable with a choice. I wish you luck! -
that was interesting. thanks for sharing. gastric bypass is so risky... i couldn't do it. i don't want to have to depend on supplements and stuff, i want to be able to live more naturally, eating whole, unprocessed foods.. so RNY & Duodenal switch are definitely not for me. i feel very sorry for that poor lady, though.. but the lady in the video was right- she needs to have a better diet.. seems like she didn't really learn anything & isn't bothering to correct her eating habits.. she's just eating processed junk & as we all know, that makes you feel lethargic and just zaps your energy. she needs to eat better quality foods and get on proper supplements & stuff. i hope she will get better ASAP & doesn't just let herself die & become another statistic for WLS.

Is that a thing? Intubation? With bypass, not sleeve? I didn't know. Hmmm, not want to consider that myself. I did know about the NSAIDS

Time is ticking away!
RJC5197 replied to pammieanne's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats and best to you. My visit was Monday for May 17 surgery. I agree there is a lot to take in, and the part about open procedure option made me nervous. I am having a revision an had open last time and did not want to go that route again, but with my past WLS problems, what ever it takes. I felt much better talking to surgeon and PA that they have done many of these revisions, and only with excessive bleeding (3% of time) do they have to go open. -
I have been struggling to stay on track recently. Some of my clothes are fitting better, but I could not "see" any difference. Photo below are 15 weeks apart. Starting weight 228, surgery weight 219 (Jan 8, 2020), current weight 189. Goal weight?. I had a revision to RNY in Jan 2020. Previously banded in August 2008. Lost 60 lbs, gained 30 before revision. Gurgling 2 weeks post op?
ebar822 replied to ebar822's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had band revision because my band slipped. I really never vomited much, so my surgeon thinks it may just be because I lost 100 pounds in a little over a year, that maybe the fat layer between my stomach and the band became thinner and caused a slip. But also in January I did come down with a stomach virus for 2 days so I am sure that had something to do with it as well. Anyway, back on track, just hoping things are normal now. tlhamilton - how long does the gurgling take? like if you take a drink how many seconds before you hear it? mine is like 3-4 and i'm not sure if that's too long -
I have been researching bariatric surgery for over a year & chose the lapband. I'm a 55 yr old nurse & took care of more than my share of gastric bypass patients & felt I just couldn't go that route. My surgery is scheduled for tuesday, the day after my birthday. So, needless to say there will be no cake for me this year. This is my present to myself. My Dr told me in January that I won't live 5 more years with the condition my kidneys are in if I don't lose the weight now.I had to do the 6 mos supervised weight loss which I balked at initially but am now happy I had to do it. I have lost #37 since february on a low carb diet & have really gotten into my new lifestyle. I'm not even sure I will need a fill since even now I never get hungry between meals. What I was wondering is if you never have a fill do you still have stuck episodes, pbing or still have to take the tiny bites & chew, chew, chew?

Yes, you can get a bypass when they remove the band. May I give you some advice? The bypass is pretty final. EVERYONE that I have talked to has had complications but they also say they would do it again. I myself never once considered the bypass because it is so invasive. I got the band in March 2010 and am having it removed July 9 due to not feeling well, intermittent nausea, tummy issues, etc. I, too, am worried about re-gaining weight but if I do, then I do. I think I won't though. You have had your band longer than me so you must have lost weight and learned to eat differently. Just try very hard to continue that. Can you tell I am very much against the bypass?? LOL But seriously, think about it beforehand. It's a big move. Good luck!

It is HIGHLY unlikely that you will experience dumping with the sleeve. Dumping is caused by bypassing the part of the small intestine that digests sugar with RNY. When an RNY patient eats high sugar foods, they become ill, because their bodies can no longer properly digest it. As a sleeve patient, your small intestine is fully intact. There are some people who experience dumping-like symptoms post sleeve, but that is due to other factors and is very rare.

How long does ACID Reflux or GERD last
SleeveDreamer replied to key12's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
If you are referring to insurance, I didn't have either surgery for weight loss so BMI was not even considered. I had some upper GI issues. I have lost weight, but really didn't need to. Had I not had this RNY, it would have been likely that in the future I may have gotten esophageal cancer because my acid was so out of control. Also I had an area on my esophagus that was so thin from acid damage, it would have probably ruptured in the near future, so he had to repair that when he got in there before he did the bypass. My pouch is smaller than normal because of the repair so the restiction is much greater than the sleeve restriction. But everything is going great. Never had any pain or any nausea, and I am on all food now and no issues. No regrets! -
GERD is probably the biggest long term side effect of VSG. Not everyone gets it, but many do even though they didn't have it before surgery. some patients even have to convert to bypass afterwards if the reflux gets too bad. There are some surgeons that don't do VSG if you have bad reflux preop because it can get worse. I'd definitely discuss your concerns with your surgeon, maybe even get a second opinion. Personally, I had never even taken a single antacid before surgery. Postop I was on Prilosec for 2 - 3 months. After that my heartburn/reflux hasn't been too bad, but I do have to take Zantac or Prilosec or rolaids at least a few tines/month.
