Mysticpink74 replied to achappex3's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I feel ya honey!!! Omg I NEVER see myself as fat as I am...Reality hits when I try on clothes, see myself in pics, or catch a glimpse of myself in a full length mirror or window reflection...my first thought: "Dude...that's me?!!" ... then I get depressed & get even more self conscience & my anxiety kicks in & makes me think everyone is judging me I AM SOOOOO READY FOR THIS!! Can't wait for them to call me next week w/ my SET SURGERY DATE!!! (Looks to be the beginning of November)....can't wait to shop for clothes that don't look (sorry if this offends anyone!) Granny-fied ...they think all big peeps want big flowers or print or jst UGLY clothing?! . My main store I wanna hit when I lose weight... PINK!!! Love their glittery cute hoodies!!! I have never in my life worn a pair of heels...so that's one on my bucket list too!! Can't wait to shop in normal sized clothing!! ???? Sent from m -
Hi there, good to know that sensation and your body's signals. If you had one more bite of food it may have become a true "stuck" episode. For me, that will only resolve when I spit-up whatever was in there. This has happened five times now since banding in November. Maybe I'm a slow learner! Most recent was just this weekend when I got stuck on chicken. A lot of people report difficulty with chewing white meat chicken well enough. Usually I cook with chicken thighs but this time it was chicken breast done in a nice sauce, etc. It took a couple of hours to get to the point where I spit up the food which had not even entered the stomach. For me, this is pretty violent and all-around miserable while I wait for the outcome. I sipped tea to make it happen as I could tell it just was not going to go through. Afterwards I feel fine but am "tight" for a day or two.

Hello All! My name is Lynetta. I am 31 year old mother of 2. I had the RNY gastric bypass on 6/22/12 so far the road has been rocky and I'm still waiting for the moment I am sure will come where I will say it was all worth it or I will do it all again. Since my surgery I have been back and forth to the hospital almost every week with severe pain and dehydration being some of my previous diagnosis. A week ago I told my Dr. that I was unable to keep down any food and whatever I managed to get down came up. I was admitted to ER to find out I have an ulcer and a few days later had to have my gallbladder removed. So I have been officially home for 5 days now and just trying to deal with these issues on my own to avoid going back to the hospital. I found this app on my phone and you seem very encouraging and believe me I could use all I could get right now. I can't eat or drink, and I am very unhappy right now. Everything has become a task for me eating, drinking, moving. I don't know when I will feel like my old self or even a new motivated self. I would appreciate any positive feedback to get me on the right track. Thanks

Hi Everyone, I have finally worked up enough courage to introduce myself. I started my Lap Band Journey on November 4th when I went to the WLS seminar. Since then I have met with the surgeon, and done all the pre-op testing required. I completed my 6 month diet requirement through Jenny Craig last year. I am now schedelued for my final Surgeon visit on 1/14 and then they will submit my packet to Carefirst BCBS and see what happens. I am so nervous about the possibility of being rejected and that is why I have been afraid to post. I currently weigh 223 and am 5'2" tall, my BMI is 40.5. I am the proud Momma of 5 boys and 2 girls ranging in age from 20 - 1. I am thrilled with the idea of getting healthy, so I can keep up with the little ones as they grow.

Band to sleeve to bypass
GlowingGal replied to debd3300's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went to the doc thinking of getting the sleeve. My doc recommended gastric because of my 20 year history with GERD. He said the acids sit in the bottom of the stomach and gastric bypass resolves the issue. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using BariatricPal mobile app -
Silviamom...When did you have your band removed? I have heard the 30% chance of leakage is when you have the revision, but if you wait 6 months and everything is healed the chance of leakage goes way down. I also don't have any interest in bypass, to many risks for me. when do you plan on having your sleeve? mine will be around Xmas or right after the first of the year.

How soon is your surgery? I don't think it will delay it unless it's in next few weeks. The Dr will probably order some meds and you should be fine by surgery. Stay away from NSAIDs! Good luck. Let us know what the Dr says! I will have completed all of my requirements for insurance by September 20th and should know if Im approved within a couple of days after that. They told me that with approval then, Im looking at a November/ December surgery. So I have time, but I'm worried something will mess up an otherwise smooth process lol

Well...hmmm...where do I start...was banded on march 24, 2006...today is june 14th...I'm glad I found this spot to journal...had joined richard simmons support group on the internet, but found that it couldn't really help me because I felt that I had an advantage with the lapband...felt like I was sort of cheating, when other people on the site did not have the "tool" that I have chosen to help me loose weight...Hubby also had lapband surgery the same day I did... It's been a long 7 months...After my accident in November 2005 where i CRUSHED and almost lost my arm all the way down from the shoulder...It has been a long battle for me...I am happy that I am now able to type...Broke my leg 2 weeks ago....so LIFE IS SUCH A CHALLENGE...I'm committing to writting in my journal my feelings...today was a little difficult...Have had an allergy attack so I am filling up my pouch with slime...I ate two oatmeal/almonds breakfast bar and latte for breakfast... a small amount of beef jerkey at lunch, and about 4 chips...became a little nauseated.....The doctor put me back on my diabetes meds today, so sort of feeling a little funny....ate some creamed english peas late this afternoon...I'm going to eat a little something soon, since I just took my shot....I am not craving food at all anymore....Thinking my fill is fine for now...am at 2cc....I have a 10cc band..Dr spiegel, houston texas my surgen....Am just a little under 200 lbs right now...I am trying not to weigh...Just eat to live and not live to eat....Learning that I have to eat, and eating is not the unpardonable sin...:clap2:

Help/Advice Please.
Screwballski replied to Fat Vegan's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My lap band surgery was almost 12 years ago. It was nearly pain free. I was playing with my then 8 year old on the floor within a day or so. But, I always bounce back right away from all of my surgeries. I’m not a great benchmark. I’m very, very fortunate. My band was not over bypass. Just straight-up lap band on regular stomach. I actually just got it removed and was revised to a sleeve in May. I wish you the very best. Please consider seeing the local surgeon you didn’t choose, the one who worked with you before. I think they will be more concerned with making sure you are okay than some lost business. And update here. I’m concerned about your pain level. -
Job interfering with surgery...
athenacb replied to majorsmama's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I also switched job positions right when my approval went through in November. I delayed my surgery until after lots of training, mandatory meetings, ect. When I thought I was in the clear I called the surgeon, who called my insurance & said my approval was still valid. My surgery is may 11th. It's taken almost a year because of the job issue, but I do not regret it at all. Job security! -
Has anyone out there ever had gastric bypass? If so, can you have the lap band after if you have gained some of the weight back. I had gastric 5 years ago and have since put on 40+ pounds and wanted to know what my chances of having this surgery would be. Any comments?

Lapbanders have great variation! They are told one thing by their surgeon, lapbanders friends, and nutritionist. No wonder it's confusing!!! This is what I've found: 1) Some nutritionists, like mine, treated gastric bypass the same as lapbanders. I supposed nutrition is nutrition, but we do have differences in our tolerance, capacities, and expected weight loss per month. 2) My surgeon says 3 meals a day, no more than 1 1/2 cups at each meal. No calorie counting and exercise 3-4 times per week (I calorie count and have slacked on the exercise). If you are hungry between meals and have had Protein first, then you need a fill. 3) I don't like being too tight. If I get the "golf ball" feeling after 2 well-chewed bites, than I am too tight. If I am too tight, then I am not satisfied and end up grabbing the junk, which goes down really well. Plus, being too tight is miserable. It sounds like you are doing really well. Shawn

My doc says nothing about portions, but what he does stress every time I'm there is to eat low carb... almost atkins like. Protein and veggies and he keeps yelling ooops I mean telling me that I need to Exercise!!! So basically he's not saying anything i don't know... I just have to do what he says lol. As far as weight loss, they expect 1 - 2 lbs a week. They do not expect patients to lose like a gastric bypass patient. Slow and steady. I had 0 restriction before my fills, and i could eat a hero sandwich with no problem. When I told my doc, he didn't flinch, he said just to keep up doing what i was doing... I was confused. Portions really depend on your restriction IMHO... one size does not fit all, some can eat 1/2 cup, some can eat 1 1/2 cups... some more. So pay attention to your tummy and go from there. Hope this helps.

Well I kind of figured the pre-op class would be a waste of time, but I did learn that I have to drink this stuff the night before to clean me out - oh yippee. The class was mostly geared for gastric bypass patients but occasionally they would say something that was for lapband people. There were only 2 of us out of the 10 in the room having lapband. Man, I hope I"m making the right decision. I really feel that I am. So far on the liquid protein diet - day 7 today - I"m down to 270 on my scale. Thats down 10 pds since the beginning of March, and 6 since the beginning of the protein diet. Its really not as bad as I thought it would be. I am not hungry, not craving foods, etc. I do miss the enjoyment of foods though - but not that much. I still haven't figured out what I"m going to do after surgery - Larry's party is the first week post -op - Will cross that bridge when I get there I guess. First things first! First - pre-op physical tomorrow! Tonight - work on the new room and get stuff ready for the weekend!! Friday - (tomorrow) leave to go camping for the weekend. Home Sunday - get groceries for the week and work on the room some more. I was really hoping we would get the room done before surgery but it doess't look too promising. But I"m not giving up! We have free evenings next week M-W and so hopefully we'll make some progress. One more week - I can't believe its finally almost here!!

Hello, I am looking for anyone from Eastern Iowa, Western IL. that had their procedure done at Genesis in Quad Cities? Look for some of your personal experiences. I am so contemplating this but when mention to my husband I get the "let's check it out" and then the attitude of "here we go again, another attempt, more money and no success". It doesn't help that we know people that have done gastric bypass and have gained everything back! So sick of being like this and having to struggle to get any ounces off! Please message or email me with your experiences. Thanks, Angie paankadu@msn.com

If we are all getting the same surgery...bypass, why are different Vitamins suggested by surgeons. For instance my surgeon specifically told me no Flintstones chewables or Centrum. IDK I'm just thinking we all need the same amount of vitamins after surgery... correct? I feel like I have to purchase the more costly ones from particular websites until I can swallow actual pills. At least that's how I feel about my Multivitamin. I know I can grab the others at any drugstore. Am I missing something? Sent from my Y538 using the BariatricPal App

Hello every one I need support
Aingael63 replied to Nicole A's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi Nicole, I was banded on November 26th and am having a heck of a time as well. I started eating solid foods on my third week, and with all the parties and potlucks, I have been eating way too much. Still way less than I would have before, just not bandster portions and the guilt is bothering me. My first fill is January 5th and I hope it makes a big difference. Maybe I should have waited until after the holidays and the temptations weren't there taunting me. Good luck. -
I agree with what Kindle said above. I am 14 months post surgery and I chose the sleeve because I wanted to continue to live a normal life. I wanted to continue to eat many of my favorite foods and not have to worry about malabsorption, dumping syndrome, throwing up or any of the other side effects I hear about more often with gastric bypass and the lap band. I was able to reach my goal weight within a year and its amazing how certain foods don't even appeal to me anymore. I don't even crave soda let alone worry about overeating anymore. I think there's no perfect choice though. It takes research in finding the best choice for you. I didn't start out with a high BMI. I was 241 pounds at my highest at 5'7" tall. If I had a significant amount of weight to lose, I probably would have chosen the gastric bypass and dealt with the malabsorption and dumping. I don't understand the appeal of having to deal with Lapland shots/fills on an ongoing basis or throwing up if you eat too much. I really don't feel like I've had surgery at this point. I have a new "normal" which I quickly adjusted to. Best decision I ever made.

Will my knees stop hurting?
SerendipityHappens replied to musiclover's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 41 and work 50 hours a week on my feet all day. I used to come home straight after work and put my legs up and cry from the pain in my feet, ankles and knees. When I gave up wheat in November I noticed a great improvement even without weightloss though there was still some pain after my shift. Now it's getting better and better. I now work all day, go for a three mile walk, come home, prepare dinner and THEN put my feet up.. yeah my knees and ankles still do ache a bit but NOTHING like before. -
So, here I am...19 days post-op. I'm feeling good, considering that I've stopped taking my anti-depressants and given up caffeine since surgery. I'm down 12 pounds and keeping a positive outlook. It's really bothered me because a rumor started around my school (cosmetology school, nonetheless) that I'd had gastric bypass. I've just shrugged it off for the most part, but I'm gonna admit that hearing that bothered me. I feel that more severe obesity cases opt for gastric bypass and I feel slightly insulted that it's even a topic amongst my peers. I would think that my being fat wasn't an issue to them as well as my having LAP Band isn't a topic that's up for discussion. I'm probably being silly for even worrying about it, but that's what cosmetology school is for. Drama and girlfights. Even though I feel generally better, I have noticed that I'm really lethargic at the end of the day. I've been honestly forcing myself to walk for thirty minutes here and there. I'm only up this late because I made it a point to prepare dishes that my sister and I could eat while everyone else eats the high fat/calorie stuff for Thanksgiving. I took a bunch of recipes from Hungry-girl.com and made them into "mashies approved" casseroles. I ended up with a cauliflower bake (pureed), smashed sweet potatoes (made with sugar-free maple syrup and Splenda), and a crustless pumpkin pie. I'm pretty pleased with how everything looks. So hopefully, everything with taste good as well. We had a potluck today at school and I had a teaspoon of stuffing and I can safely say...their stuffing was terrible! I'm really glad I couldn't eat much because I couldn't imagine eating something like that and pretending to enjoy it. Blech. Anyway, I'm gonna go ahead and close by saying that I'm trying to keep my chin up and stay hopeful that I'm going to (one day soon) be much smaller! I've had a lot of heartache in the past year that's made a huge impact on my life and I really need to make this work. For me. This time it's not for anyone else. Keep your fingers crossed!

Hi I am new to the site and have had revision WLS (band over bypass) on the 9th January 2014. This has been my most happiest post operative experience so far (have had many surgeries) and I must say the peppermint tea that I have been drinking(recommended by a friend) has made all the difference. It's natural , almost calorie free and helps ease pain and wind..so thought I would share my experience and hopefully help others
