    frustrated, stalled, and lost

If you’re not exercising, getting in 1500 calories may be too many & hinder your weight loss. I’m a non exerciser (just stretching, resistance bands & sit-ups). At an inch shorter & probably older (almost 58) I maintain consuming 1400-1500 calories which i have since discovered is pretty much what my basal metabolic rate recommends. This may be something to raise with your dietician as they know you & your needs better. I don’t enjoy exercising & also have low blood pressure (genetic - had it randomly before but all the time now. Amusingly being obese kept my BP at 120/80.) & oozing discs which is why I only do as little as I do. Most are on the floor & I exercise snack. Do 4 sessions lasting 5-10 minutes across the day. Would probably only burn 30 calories but my muscles are definitely more toned. My doctor put me on blood pressure meds to get it higher. It didn’t work for me but still may be something worth asking your doctor about even as a temporary fix. I relate to not being able to physically eat more too. When I reached my goal at 6 months I was only eating about 900 calories & less than a cup of food for a meal. I kept losing for another 6 months during which I slowly increased my snacks (to 4 & 5 a day ) & slowly was able to eat more. I truely felt I was eating all day long. I stopped losing when I was consuming about 1300 calories. My body has since settled, I eat fewer snacks but more regular sized portions hence the more calories. I also have pretty much maintained at about a kilogram above my initial 2 year stabilised weight. We all have different needs physically, psychologically, medically, etc. but do ask further questions of your doctor & dietician. One size doesn’t fit all.
  2. I had my first bypass in November 2019. I did the dieting for 6 mos pre op and lost 50lb. Then I Lost another 18 during 2 week liquid diet. I started at 365. I assume everyone get lots of liquids pushed IV while at the hospital. When they weighed me after surgery I had gained 14 lbs. I’m freaking out going what did you do to me. Thank goodness my Doctor and nurses were great. Calmed me down quickly explaining why the gain. This week I had to have revision surgery as my pouch staples came undone. I didn’t lose near what I needed. Or thought I should of, but am reminding myself that it is a journey. I got a 2nd chance to finish what I started. Love yourself for being brave enough to take this step. I’m 250 now.
  3. Sleeved 01/06/2023 and as of today I'm 200 lbs even. I'm supppppper close to ONEderland! I eat between 800-1200 calories a day (usually about 1000 calories a day). I attend aqua aerobics 1x a week and try to walk at least 5 days a week. With a desk job, I have to make a conscious effort to move because I sit so much. Overall I feel great, I still deal with fatigue but I'm anemic so that's to be expected... and still less tired then I was pre-surgery. My post-op bloodwork all came back great (with the exception of my iron which has always been an issue). Type-2 diabetes in remission. 5'5 SW 265 LBS, CW 200 LBS, GW 150 LBS
  4. hello - I have been stalled since 3/23. My dietician wants me to up my calories. I am currently getting between 800-100 and she wants me at 1200-1500 a day. I have no idea how to add in another 300+/- calories that are not junk food. I eat 5x a day, plus one shake. I keep my carbs under 75 a day (under 20 per meal), fat under 60 (under 10 per meal), and sugar less than 25 for whole day, and avoid unneeded sugar (eg, sugar in milk or yogurt okay, but not sugar in skittles) I also get well over 100 g of protien a day. I am not working out because I am having positional lightheadedness, where my vision whites out when I go from sitting to standing randomly. I am getting 80+ ounces of fluid a day. yesterdays food: pure protien bar protien shake greek yogurt tuna (bumble bee quick catch, had tuna and pasta) a fake sushi roll (avocado carrots butter lettuce crab meat and lobster chucks wrapped in a rice paper) grilled ribs without sauce + lima beans. todays meal plan: quest cheddar crisps protien shake yogurt legendary pop tart artisan traders 2 egg omlet cups ribs and lima beans my restriction is still super strong, and i can barely get half a cup in per meal/. 6 months out from surgery. bouncing between 184-188 since 3/23

    Any April Surgery Dates?

Same day, same feeling! Although I'm also stressed about this liquid diet and not losing enough weight pre-op - I need to step away from the scale, as it only shows 2 lbs lost in a week. I was hoping to lose 10 in pre-op stage.

    Elevated heart rate?

Yes, my resting heart rate went up at least 10 bpm the week or so after surgery and my Garmin watch showed I was highly stressed. But with the exception of a bad 24 hour stretch I had a good recovery and wasn't really in pain. Just my body doing its thing I guess. It's lower now at 5 weeks post-op than it was before surgery.
  9. learn2cook

    Elevated heart rate?

I had the opposite experience. My resting rate was 74, and that day after surgery it was 53. Now 19 months later my average is around 64, vacation time rate is 52 again. That’s beats per minute per Fitbit. I do wish you the best in figuring it out. When I have a virus, my rate increases dramatically. It’s my first clue that flu or Covid has come back (despite shots). I hope this passes quickly for you!

    Food FOMO

In my case, a lot of the foods I occasionally miss are ones that give me nearly instant, really unpleasant issues (sugar, alcohol, bread, pasta, potatoes are mostly the ones I can't tolerate STILL, even at 19 months out!)...so in a way a lot of that resolved itself because it's like aversion therapy. Every time I start sizing up a cookie, I remember fainting the last time I ate one and that definitely keeps me away LOL.

    New Set Point?

Thank you! This is so helpful. To be honest, I would probably look better with another 10 pounds… so if I do regain a bit, that’s ok. I will try to hold the line, though.
  12. catwoman7

    New Set Point?

actually, with any kind of weight loss, surgery or not, regain is super common after you have a loss (I'm taking a nutrition course on obesity and weight loss right now at the university, and we've talked about this in class. Even among merely "overweight" people, even if they lose 10 or 20 lbs, a year later, give or take, the regain starts. Happens to most people, surgery or not). I think it's some of both - science and backsliding (starting to slack off a bit on the "rules", letting a few bad habits sneak back in - but also, your body always seems to want to go back to its set point (which in our case, should be much lower than it was before surgery). You can take the regain back off again, but it's programmed to go back to its set point, so if you want your weight lower than your (new) set point, it'll be challenge getting back there again and keeping it there. I've pretty much given up the ghost on it because even though I'd like to lose it again, I think my body is happy where its at, and I'm getting tired of the constant battle... (my weight where it is is fine- I'd just prefer to be about 10 lbs lighter)
  13. catwoman7

    New Set Point?

it does create a new set point, but keep in mind that that set point may be a bit higher than you are now. Lots of us gain 10-20 lbs after hitting our lowest weight - usually in years 2 or 3 - before stabilizing. Of course, you can always lose that rebound (if you experience it - again, most do - although it's not inevitable), but if your new set point is where you ended up after the 10-20 lb rebound, then it will be a real challenge to get back down to your lowest weight - and keep it there. Hopefully, where you are now IS your new set point...if so, it shouldn't be too difficult to maintain as long as you monitor yourself.

    New here!

Hi all! I had my RNY 15 days ago. I'll be 55 years old next month. I'm 5'4 and my top weight was 248. Pre op I was 231 (lost weight with pre-op diet hell). Currently sitting at 222 lbs. Still on Full Liquid stage with starting the Pureed on 4/19. No real hunger pangs at all, just weakish. Weighing myself just once a week. I've always been hard on myself, so weighing once a week, I think, will keep things more in perspective for me. I'm down 9 lbs since surgery and trying hard not to tell myself it should be more! I'm Feeling pretty good. Was REALLY sore for that first week, but feeling more comfortable every day. I'm just bummed about the lack of energy I still feel. I can toodle around the house fine, do chores, etc, but when it comes to going to the store, short walks, etc, I get wiped out SO easily. Going back to work next Monday and dreading the 10+ hour days I do. Luckily it's just 3 days a week with another half day thrown in there (I average ~35 hours/week). Can't afford to take off any more work. Anyone else experience this? I'm averaging ~500 calories/day, which I know isn't much and that's likely the reason. Currently having 2 protein shakes/day. My doc put a note into the dietician to reach out to me about all this. I'm grateful to have found this site! By the way, I can't seem to figure out how to have my "Weight loss ticker" show on my posts. Help?
  15. SAME here! I'm 15 days post op as of today. I just emailed my doc yesterday asking about this. I find that my heart rate spikes with just a little energy expenditure. I can walk around the house fine, but going to the store, short walks, etc have me feeling so tired like I couldn't take another step. I'm stopping my blood pressure meds (as advised) to see if that's the culprit. I go back to work on Monday and am worried about my stamina to make it the 10+ hour days I normally do. 😕 My surgeon put in a note for the dietician to get in touch with me. Maybe it's that I'm only getting ~500 cals/day. I have NO hunger pangs, but get weak/tired so easily! I'll let you know what she says.

Just completed ✔️ my EGD and everything look good. Onto my 2nd nutritional visit on 4/19 🥰
  18. My first full 10 days were clear liquids only- broths, fluids, etc— and all i was to focus on at the time was getting fluids. Then when I switched to full liquids, the shakes felt super heavy, but over time the protein goal got a bit easier. I could not stomach the protein water, it was disgusting. Now im still struggling with water and protein— so i think of it as a constant goal!

    Pancreatitis :(

!!!Turns out it was an intestinal blood clot!!! I went to ER on Saturday in a fair amount of back pain, some abdominal pain--I thought it was a Kidney Stone. They did CAT scan, diagnosed be with acute pancreatitis. Said gallbladder looked fine. Went home after some primo narcotics, and prescribed norcos. On Sunday pain started coming back, and I started vomiting. Went to a different ER. ER Doc there was POd at the other ER for not using dye/contrast, so he ordered CAT scans with oral and IV contrast. THAT'S when they detected I had a blood clot in one of my intestinal veins. Said I had to be transferred to a hospital for treatment, but they could not release me due to the severe nature of the clot. Nurses were talking maybe needing surgery to fix it, etc etc etc. I was told since I didn't have my sleeve surgery there, NONE of the doctors were willing to treat. I had to travel 60 miles to a hospital my gastric surgeon had privileges in, and it *had* to be by ambulance. They said if I didn't use the ambulance that I would have to go through that hospital's ER since they would no longer direct admit me. OMG, I KNEW insurance would not cover a 60 mile ambulance trip, nor a 3rd ER visit. They could not arrange ambulance that day, so I spent the night in my crappy ER bed. Got IV narcotics to keep pain under control. Next day, they said a bed had opened up at the destination hospital that my gastric surgeon had privileges for, and they were sure they could get transport by noon. Around 10 am they said transport pushed back to 2 pm. At this point I called my surgeon again, and he was surprised I wasn't already at the hospital yesterday. Apparently he called the on call ER doc that morning and spoke very (VERY) sternly to them, and suddenly it was ok to drive ourselves (wife driving) and be direct admitted, no issue. Spend night at hospital and they immediately started an IV heparin blood thinner and started taking blood ever 6 hours to make sure the amount of heparin was good. My gastric surgeon visited, explained that I'd be on blood thinners for several months, and everything should resolve on its own. I am no home now. The ordeal is done. But I keep thinking if I had decided to go to Mexico instead of JourneyLite 60 miles away from me, that I might not have found any doctor willing to take my case. Terrifying!

    Weight gain

Go back to eating as you did at maintenance. Thar was that caloric intake that allowed you to maintain that lower weight so you’ll lose. You were still focussed on protein, portion sizes, making better food choices (nutrient dense), fluids, etc, I don’t really exercise in the traditional sense but I do stretches & use resistance bands (& sit ups - I hate them but I do them) to help with my back & oozy discs. I do what they call exercise snacking. Several short bursts of activity through out the day. They say this is just as effective as a single longer session. I do mine over four sessions lasting for 3 to 10 mins depending on what activity I’m doing. You may find this easier than running/walking miles or hitting the gym. I also changed my every day activity. I have stairs so I make multiple trips a day - why carry things in one trip when you can do two or three. I park further away from where I’m going. Today at a shopping centre I deliberately circled the centre twice when I could have done my chores in one circle.

    Weight gain

you've probably heard that weight loss is 90% diet and 10% exercise - so your best bet is to rein in your calorie intake. I agree with Sleeve_Me_Alone. Are you still tracking you food intake? That's a big one for me - I still log everything I eat at almost eight years out.
  22. Can’t believe it was a month on 4/9. It wasn’t easy and still having issues with dizziness while going for walk/protein intake by 5 grams. Sometimes I see the scale move up or at a halt, but I got to remember it’s the non-scale victories that keep me going; being able to go for mile + walk a day or going from size 18 to 14 felt so amazing (no idea when last time I fit into that size was.)  So glad I made this lifestyle change.

      You look good and HAPPY!💃

  23. some information: I'm 24 73kg/160,9lbs 179cm/5'10. So I had my surgery around August of 2019. I lost around 50Kg from than till now but I don't wanne lose any more. I started going to the gym last week but before that I also did 3-4 month at home training because I didn't wanne go to the gym before i could at least do something. (stupid to think like that but yeah...) My arms looked like twigs and still do but at least there is a some muscle to see compared to 4 months ago. All the information I find online regarding gaining muscle is all about "eat big to get big" but that's the thing i can't eat big, like probably most of you guys. I have been drinking protein shakes 2X a day protein bars... and other food that contain protein to at least get as much as I can let's say around 80g of protein But I don't see much progress (counting the 4 month workouts at home) and I don't know if I should just trust what I’m doing now or change something... Sorry about my writing, I would say sorry about my English but even in my langue I write with many spelling mistakes.

    Whole-Food Plant-Based Nutrition Resources

I had the sleeve don in 2010. I was lacto ovo vegetarian the whole time. I lost slowly for the first two rears, then started to gain. I employed 5-2 semi fasting program and lost to goal (90lbs) by year three. I maintained for less than a year, then slowly started to gain until around 2019 when i platoued at 20 lbs under my initial weight. Around that time i was diagnosed with breast cancer. I went to a “surviver clinic” run by my medical plan(Kaiser). They recommended i go whole food plant based to reduce most causes of premature death. I was motivated. That was 4 years ago. I am currently down 35 pounds from my high. I wish i had done this insted of surgery, because whole food plant based relies on eating a lot of food to work. I can eat quite abit now… i guess my stomach has stretched out quite a bit, but i still cant eat as much as i could before surgery. Check out nutritionfacts.org for lots of current research on nutrition, weight loss and health.
  25. All liquid as well. I’m struggling with the sweetness. I’m not a fan of artificial sweeteners. I’m on day 2 of my 10 day. No coffee either. That’s hard
