  1. These are amazing! And easy! They come out looking tidy and are a favorite of the whole family. Great for kid's packed lunches as well! Ingredients: Wonton wrappers (typically sold next to the tofu) Boca vegetarian "meat" crumbles LF ricotta LF mozzarella Marinara (I like Rao's) 1 egg Parmesan Spray for muffin tray cups Steps: (1) Preheat oven to 350 & spray each cupcake/muffin tray cup including the sides (2) Lay 1 wonton wrapper in each cup (3) Microwave a small bowl of boca crumbles about a minute (4) stir the crumbles into the marinara (1/4 to 1/2 jar) (5) In a bowl combine half a container of LF ricotta with one egg and a small handful of mozz (6) layer the tomato sauce and the ricotta mix into the cups (I go sauce, ricotta, sauce) leaving enough room for cheese topping (7) Top each cup with a yummy layer of mozz and parmesan (8) Cook for 20 minutes and allow 5 minutes to cool before taking them out of the tray

    Pureed foods

Sounds like you've got a lot of good soft/pureed vegetarian ideas there. Congratulations on your WLS and good luck on your journey.

    Pureed foods

Hey! I'm 4 days post op and trying to imagine whay pureed food is gonna feel like. I'm a vegetarian. I'm liking the idea of fat free refried beans with salsa but im also terrified to eat food again. I don't want to throw up or anything. Can anyone suggest vegetarian safe pureed foods for their new stomachs? So far I'm thinking refried beans, egg Salad pureed, hummus, tomato soup, red pepper soup, pureed broccoli cheddar, Silken tofu pudding....I would add protein powder to some of these too.. What else sounds good or worked for you? Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Nutritional shorthand needed

Check with your dietician/nutritionalist & surgeon for calorie & macro guidelines. You will still be on their plans while you are losing. There are a lot of different plans out there & one person’s plan may not be what your medical team recommends. For example, mine want very prescriptive. I wasn’t given calorie or macros goals just protein & fluid goals & portion size recommendations. I was also given lists of foods I could eat or had to avoid. It was low carb, low fat, low sugar but no specific numbers. I saw my dietician every week for the first months who reviewed my diet each time & together we worked out what else I might need or could try. Your dietician may also make specific suggestions according to your needs: activity levels, allergies, eating preferences (vegan, vegetarian, etc.). & so on. Even your age & gender could influence your plan. Do you cook? It’s much easier to control the ingredients, how the food is prepped & cooked & therefore the calories & macros if you make it yourself. A lot of prepared food even so called diet food is calorie heavy for our needs & ‘low fat’ foods can be higher in sugar & vice versa. For example a single lean cuisine meal would exceeded the calories I was eating in a whole day the first couple of months, plus include ingredients on my avoid list. PS - congrats on your surgery.

    B12 advice

I’m hoping they’re basing this on your blood tests & you are lacking in B12. That rigorous of an injection regime does seems extreme. But your blood tests could be showing you are very low & need a more intensive regime. But I’d still quiz your GP further about what your levels actually are & what they should be if only for your own information. Out of curiosity, are you a vegetarian or vegan? B12 is found in animal products (meat, seafood, poultry, dairy) so if you don’t eat much of these foods it could be contributing. @catwoman7 is correct. Sleevers don’t tend to have the absorption issues those with a bypass can. I only had to take a multivitamin & no other supplements while losing. I gave them up at 8 months post surgery & haven’t taken any vitamins since then. Don’t need to as my 3 monthly blood tests show I absorb enough from what I eat.

    Dipping my toe in!

Welcome! If you don't drink milk, you may be a bit limited. It depends on why you don't drink milk. If you are vegan, then the protein water won't work as it has whey protein in it. If you are lactose intolerant, you may find that some of the drinks with whey protein will be okay, as will lactose free high protein milk. I would recommend bone broth, again, that will only be if you eat meat products. Also, pho, hot and sour, and tom yum broth can be awesome too. I didn't have 4 weeks of just liquids after surgery, only 1 week, then I could have yogurt. After two weeks I could have things like refried beans, which were great. Will you be able to have purees? There are many foods (like bean soups) that can be pureed. I would ask your surgeon what they recommend for you since you do not drink milk. I believe there is a vegetarian/vegan thread on here you can check out.
  7. I am a few days away and so excited and nervous all at the same time. Thank you all for sharing and keeping us updated. It helps so much for us who are waiting and have questions. My surgery is a revision from sleeve to bypass due to Hiatal Hernia which my surgeon will repair, GERD and never getting to goal with some weight gain. 2017 HW 284 I’m 5’3 LW after sleeve 194 after I juiced for three days to break the 200’s. Then two years ago I gained up to 224 and I turned vegetarian. Got down to 187. Then COVID hit. I have gained and lost the same 30 lbs for the last few years. Now my current weight is 225. My revision is set for Thursday, 2/17. I am hopeful all my efforts will get me to goal this time. I’m scared to end up the same. Wish me luck.

After surgery am I doomed to a life of throwing up???

I hear this a lot. I've been a vegetarian for 6 years about and don't plan on changing that. I'm wondering how tofu and other plant based proteins will sit with me post bypass. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Pre op foods

I don't have any suggestions for you for pre-op, since I mostly ate lean meat (I've never been good at cooking tofu!). However, my stomach is fine with cheese, so I eat a lot of high fat dairy. Some people DO become lactose intolerant, but not all cheese has lactose. Also, kefir is more sour than bitter. It's also not necessarily high fat. I add a lot of fat free greek yogurt to my meals to add protein and flavor. It's great with chili, which can be done vegetarian post surgery when you can have beans again (I was permitted beans on pre-op).

    Pre op foods

I understand. I've always hated protein shakes. Blendibg them with ice has helped a lot. I have to try and find some vegetarian friendly creamed soup! Sounds decent. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Pre op foods

I'm about 1 month away from pre-op diet and came here to ask for vegetarian suggestions for my one protein a day. But you just did the same. Looks really good. Have you tried anything other than tofu?

    Pre op foods

Hey! I'm just trying to get through my pre op diet right now. I'm limited to lean proteins and veggies at the moment in very small amounts. I'm doing meal preps and eating the same small protein meal everyday. I'm a vegetarian so I'm just sticking to tofu since it's low carb. The first one is tofu cooked in a tablespoon on coconut flour and garlic Zuchinni with a very small amount of tomatoes. The other one was sugar free barbecue tofu and onion green beans. Can I see your pre op meals? I'm interested to see how others ate on their pre op diets. Thanks! Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app
  13. 🤦‍♀️This was meant to be a search term in the forum, not a comment!-- was curious if there was an approved recipe and/or vegetarian alternative options if the family was ever ordering out. Accidentally posted the word in chat-- don't know HT delete. Sorry!!

When did you start eating fruits? (Carbs content)

Ahhh Pita and rice may work up the calories. I have been avoiding grains cuz they seem too heavy. But now that I am almost done with month 2, I may give it a shot. BTW, brown rice or white rice? Can't do chicken and all cuz vegetarian but would love a falafel in a pita (ofc bariatric version of falafel) 😂 Your carb content isn't almost double your protein. So seems like I shouldn't be worried getting more carbs in. With beans and lentils, carbs do overshoot, but without them there won't be much variation in my diet. My fats are around similar number, usually less than 30gram.
  15. I went ultra-low carb (20g net carbs a day), but I’m not vegetarian so it would’ve been easier for me. This was not my prescribed program, i chose to do this on my own (and fully disclosed it to my NUT). I didn’t eat any fruit during weight loss phase save for the occasional berry (least amount of sugar in the fruit family). But i do now at 3+ years post op. You can try google-ing Vegetarian Keto for some food/recipe ideas, but i think that so soon after surgery you may not reach your bariatric protein requirements and stay below your maintenance calories to be true Keto. So maybe a modified version of it?
  16. So, my program has me on fruits and veggies and even grain if one can tolerate right from month 2. I don't do much grain (may be once a week) since I don't like eating it much. Though based on our outlined eating schedule, we should take 3 to 4 servings of fruits (depending how we tolerate ofc). I don't have any issue with tolerating any ofthe fruits (I don't dump). But ofc if I do that my carbs shoot quite high especially cuz I am vegetarian and I get my protein mostly from dairy (yogurt, milk, cottage cheese and other cheese), which again has significant carbs. My average net carbs are between 60 to 70 grams. Anyhow, so I was wondering how did y'all carry your carbs during the weight loss phase? And when did you introduce fruits and veggies in your diet?

    Reverse gastric bypass

I don't thi!k you should get discouraged just yet. Like others mentioned speak to your medical team about the concerns you're having. I didn't have much side effects of the surgery but 1st month was definitely difficult in terms of energy. I didn't even have energy to walk few mins on a treadmill which has gotten so much better now 6 weeks post-Op. Now I can easily do 30 to 35 mins. Even now though, there are some days which are easily fatigued than others. I am sure as time passes, it'll go away too. Plus as you progress, you should be able to tolerate various foods. I have tried other foods, and I haven't gotten dumping yet. So I am sure down the line, we should be able to enjoy our favorites, ofc in limit. As for gross tasting protein, try other brands. And even if those don't work, try to get protein from wholesome foods. On my program, we aren't allowed protein powders or any processed protein. We are told to consume protein from food. I am also vegetarian, so my options are mostly dairy products. And I still make my goal of 70 to 80 grams of protein. So protein powders aren't the only means. Try Greek yogurt or even better *ice landing yogurt*. Both easily available at grocery stores. Ice landing yogurt has 15 grams of protein on 0.5 cup. I can have about 1 cup a day (split) and easy 30 grams in. Then therea are various cheeses, cottage cheese, milk, lentils, beans etc. So many options out there for protein alternative. Good Luck with your journey.

    Reading labels.

See if you can get back in to your dietician & with their guidance develop an eating plan that is sustainable in the long term. It’s best to design a way of eating that works for you & not for someone else. You’re physiologically & psychologically different to everyone else. You may find you don’t follow a specific ‘diet’ but pick & choose across a few eating styles. Like low carb but not low fat or incorporate some vegan or vegetarian meals each week. In the meantime, & as a starting point, keep in mind the recommended daily amounts for the ‘average’ person who’s maintaining like 6 teaspoons or 25g added sugar per day for women. You will need to consume less if you still want to lose. Take into account your plan, lifestyle & personal needs. How many calories are you eating a day? It seems like it could be low if you’re still on shakes. It’s not sustainable to be still having shakes for breakfast & most lunches. You need to be eating real food, especially as you seem to be almost at your goal weight, to get the nutrients your body needs. I stopped taking multivitamins from maintenance because I got all I needed from the food I ate. I was so happy not to have to take them or buy them! I don’t buy a lot of prepared foods, sauces, condiments, etc. simply so I can control the ingredients & how they’re prepared/cooked. If I do, I study the nutrition panel & look for low processed foods, low sugar content, low fat content, multi & whole grains, no or low artificial sweeteners, Watch the ‘front of the jar’ labelling though. No added sugar usually means they’ve used artificial sweeteners or sugar alternatives or they’ve upped the fat. I bought a 25% less fat ‘lite’ peanut paste. It actually had 50% more carbs, 20% more sugar & only 16 calories less per serve.

    Food Before and After Photos

Just some random foods from between the 26th and my birthday (today)- Some weird creamed spinach and (fake) chicken dish, broccoli slaw (with cranberries and walnuts), bbq pork, hard boiled egg, a turmeric (fake) chicken and spaghetti squash soup, a vegetarian taco bake with vegetarian beef crumbles and vegan cheese and sour cream, and a Christmas sprinkle and chocolate chip cake (kids liked it… I though I would but would rather have more tea or coffee instead.) There is loads I forgot to take pictures of but 🤷‍♀️

    Bread

It's so weird how different programs work. In mine, after a month which is phase 3 for me, they have provided the list of all kinds of food including bread, pasta, rice and that too white rice. We can eat all kinds of grains as long as we can tolerate. It kinda petrifies me since we are always told to stay away from carbs during weight loss. Of course we are asked to eat Protein first then vegetables, fruits and carbs come last. I'll try to include little at a time and try not to have too many carbs in my mela especially since my protein comes from heavy carb laden whole foods (vegetarian and all, and no protein powder on my program).

    Carbs and Fat?

I have similar kinda profile though low calories for now because of the full fluid phase. I just spoke to my dietician today and I think she's okay with my Carbs and fats profile. On our program, we have to get all our proteins from whole foods and since I am vegetarian, most of it comes from dairy products like milk, yogurt and cottage cheese. And dairy products come with good amount of carbs. Hence my carbs and protein profile looks more or less similar. Because no protein powder, I think my carbs won't be as low as other programs. So hopefully it works for me as I continue with similar trend.
  23. Thank you so much. ❤️ Thank you!! That is what I have been doing... Enjoying and eating what I can. I am functionally a vegetarian and luckily live in a large metro area so getting vegetarian meals is easy when I don't want to cook at home. I've resigned myself to having to drive further out for that, but it helps me feel "normal". Thankfully my family and friends are soooo supportive. I think this would be a lot worse if I didn't have them rooting. I will do that. I'll start looking for a therapist with disordered eating experience. I'm very worried about going in the opposite direction after WLS. I think maybe a GI will help as my PCP did ask if I wanted a referral after my stool test was basically inconclusive but I declined at the time because thanks to WLS, I found a tumor (benign! And that surgery was a success) and was getting prepped for surgery so I didn't want to do two health things at once. I'll get to looking and see if I can get someone before the end of the year. Thank you! That was my concern as well and why I posted. When I search, it's people only a few weeks out which I was already told it's normal. I've posted in other groups and keep getting told wait a year. Or I get snarky comments about being too fresh and just wait a few years until I can eat a whole pizza again. Well ... now I'm here, a year and two weeks later with no appetite and can only eat a quarter of a normal sized sandwich so I'm not sure how'd I'd be eating pizza! I also don't want to wait years and hope these issues resolve considering I did get some folks 3+ years out who still have pretty decent food restriction and intolerances as well (though never severe as mine). I really appreciate you all for responding. It was a good thing to wake up to.

learning to let go of old eating habits

How you decide to maintain your weight is ultimately your choice. What I do or what someone else does may not work for you. My advice is, whatever you choose to do, make sure it is sustainable. That is, it’s a way of eating that doesn’t mean you have to make sacrifices & are able to enjoy living your life. A way of eating that is overly restrictive is destined to fail. There are always alternatives that are healthier & more nutritious. For example if you want to eat carbs, look for multi or whole grain versions & not highly processed white flours. Want pizza, try cauliflower or chicken bases or pita bread as has been suggested. There are lots of high protein low carbs pastas available too. There are snack foods that are lower in calories & higher in protein then traditional snacks. Try different cooking styles like an air fryer or oven baking versus deep frying. Some people do eat pizza, burgers, fries, etc. but they do so in small portions, occasionally. You know you best & how well you can manage eating fast foods & foods considered unhealthy. Use the time you’re losing & on a restrictive diet, to research different eating styles & reflect on your trigger foods. You may develop your own eating routine by picking & choosing from various ‘diets’. You may become vegetarian. You may switch in some vegan options or meals. You may choose to reduce certain food types from your diet like sugar or fats. You just need to develop a way of eating that works for you. Good luck.
  25. I love so called medical people who don’t understand what being a vegetarian (even quasi) is. 🤷🏻‍♀️😱. Try beans & lentils as a source of protein, like you probably often did. Add them to your soups & blend them up till super smooth (strain after to be super sure). Many find anything that’s not super smooth too harsh to swallow & tolerate at first so go slowly. As a quasi vegetarian do you eat meat stocks? If so bone broths & the broths in pho, wonton soups, etc are also good protein options but only drink the broth part of course. Generally you can purée most things if you add enough liquids (stock, broth, gravy, milk, water).. Just doesn’t always taste pleasant but it’s only two weeks.
