When to start counting a loss

I am presleeve and have lost over 60 pounds already from my highest weight... 35 of those pounds have been during the past few months during a very strict presurgery diet. (Not as much as YOU though.. AWESOME losses pre-surgery by the way!) I don't really see any difference in "counting" weight loss pre and post surgery.

    Kaiser Sleevers, I Need You!

You know, I think each NUT has their own recommendations, but for the longest time I was at about 800 calories, and 60-90 grams of protein and maybe 90 carbs, but I had to tweak it to keep losing...after 4 months increased calories to 1000 but lowered my carbs to under 50 grams. The sage advice I got here on this forum helped me see that the most effective weight loss strategy is low carbing. I will increase my carbs once I make goal. Of course I go off plan at times and allow a splurge, but I go back to plan right away. By tracking your food, calories, protein, liquid, carbs you can see what works for YOU. Right now six months out I am eating around 1000-1200 calories and under 40 grams of carbs.

    Meal Planning

I work nights, 13 hour shifts just about. I eat my dinner around five pm. I eat a light snack around 10:30 pm or 11:00 pm. I take my meal break if I’m lucky around 3 am and eat left overs of what I have made earlier in the week....chili, soup, chicken items, etc. I try not to eat when I get home, but if I am hungry I will eat a little snack then too. My snacks are usually 130-150 calories and my meals are between 250-300 or so. It can be hard on nights because you are already fighting your body’s natural rhythm. Stay away from high carb senseless items like cereals and chips and such. I see ppl eating this stuff all night long but they can’t figure out why they gain weight. One lady eats almost a whole box of cereal every shift plus her meal....

    Weight loss disappointment

Four sizes is great! As long as you are pleased with your progress, keep doing what you are doing. If you want to step up the weight loss, do more... Now, I say this and I have NO idea what you're actually doing. But it is true that some people lose quickly and some lose slowly. As long as your percentage of weight lost is what you are comfortable with, it's all good. I have a friend who was sleeved in June and she has lost about 50 pounds. She is at the point where she doesn't want to go back to the surgeon's office for her 6 month appt because she feels that she gets crap about her "slow rate" of loss. Every pound between about 215 and her current 209 has been extremely hard-won and she has been very careful about what she eats and exercises 5 or 6 days a week. Longwinded way of saying we are all different and some people do not fit into a cookie cutter.
  5. Thank you all, my choice to not tell everyone is because I no longer want my weight to be a topic for conversation even if it is on me loosing weight. I have told the people that are most important t me and that I want to be able to talk to this about. I am very happy and proud of my decision don't get me wrong but some people just don't need to know. I can't wait until I am fully healed and a while down the road able to order "normal" food and just have smaller portions. All of the food I make now is normal but mushed.

    Weight loss disappointment

well, you gotta ask yourself, could you have lost those 58 pounds by now without the operation? Not only that but you will continue to lose more weight with the sleeve op, while had you had reached this far without the operation you would have had the risk of falling off the wagon and gaining it all back in no time. If the answer to the question is no, then I would be really happy with yourself. You already made a change in your life, and it looks like it will only get better. I can't wait until I hit 58 pounds (hope it happens haha).

    Psych Evals

Thank you all! This is mighty helpful... Like Jane I will need to watch my sense of humor! I'm hopeful now that I may receive some useful advice. Currently, my biggest concern about the surgery is finding new tools for dealing with emotional eating. I've watched some friends who have had gastric bypass go... well kinda crazy! One was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. After reading through this site I now think that she was actually borderline prior to her surgery and that it just became more apparent after. Phew... how much would that suck: lose weight but the price is your sanity!
  8. Like most of you I have tried every diet imaginable. The smallest I ever got was a size 14. I was happy at that size. This surgery is different. I am a size 8 now and trying to eat enough now to maintain this weight. I am a big boned girl or thick and think I would look sickly any smaller. So, with RNY you will lose weight like you never thought. 30 lbs is probably making a bigger difference then you think. I know it took about 60 pounds for me and others to start really noticing. The smaller you get.. people and you will notice every 5 lbs.. lol
  9. I do. This is the reason my plastic surgeon recommend I gain weight cuz I have extra skin and only enough fat to fill my boobs. In other words I don't have enough fat to transfer to my butt & places to curve me up. So come April I have 4 months to gain 10/20 pounds you won't notice since it will be sucked out.
  10. Same here! I still fit the same clothes but my legs and arms are smaller my face is different. The weight is coming off from all over so it will just take some time. Congrats to you ALL!
  11. My weight loss goal was only 140, but I can still tell you I didn't want to reroute everything, I didn't want to be as limited in what I could eat (dumping syndrome) and my PCP told me that if I had the bypass I would have diarrhea for the rest of my life and that it would be the unpredictable kind. I really didn't want that. As it turned out, when I went to the seminar, the surgeon said that bypass patients can't take time release medications and I was taking a few of those and on those grounds my PCP pushed for me to have the sleeve.
  12. I recently underwent a revision from band to sleeve. Initially I was bound and determined since I was doing a revision I wanted to have the procedure that would produce the most optimum and proven results - which I didn't have with the band. Clearly that was the by-pass. However, when I heard and read about the dumping syndrome, inabilty to tolerate anything that had sugar and all the pills I would have to take for the rest of my life, I started to reconsider. The final straw was when my physician who I think is a really nice, personable sort of fellow (most docs to me are not) told me that he only does sleeves and bands, his partner did the by-passes I really started thinking. Then I met his partner, another doctor with no personality - I decided to do the sleeve. It was important to me this time to have a physician that I felt I could talk to this time around. Lot's of stuff to consider. My DIL had the sleeve and her highest weight was a little bit more than mine e.g. over 220lbs and 2 years later she looks great and says it's the best decision she ever made. Oh yeah, when I got the band 4 years ago, I was going to do the by-pass then. I asked my doc, which surgery do he think I should have and he said I didn't have that much weight to lose, so he recommended the band vs. bypass; sleeve was not really as available then or maybe insurance companies weren't approving it. He was wrong, but in a way I'm glad I didn't do the by-pass then, because this time I was much more informed regarding the things I needed to consider.
  13. I'm looking for someone that started out near my weight that is a size 4 or 6 now. I would like to know how much weight did you lose to get to that size? With all the new vanity sizing it gets confusing, so I guess I'm looking for someone that is a H&M or banana Republic 4/6. I know everyone is different, and there are different factors including muscle composition, frame size ' I am also looking to friend or follow someones blog that either just started their journey, just had their surgery, or months out that was similar in weight. I like watching (if vlogging) or getting information from people that started out similar to my size. I'd say that I have a medium or large frame naturally. At 192, I was a size 14 in torrid jeans, and a 1X in torrid tops (I have a large chest.) 285 is my current, and my surgery is in July so I know I will be lighter by July. If all goes well I'd want to be somewhere 265 to 275. Anywho thanks. My youtube channel is watchmeloseit2012. Subscribe and I will do the same. Thanks.
  14. I'm very sorry for the loss of your uncle. I had similar thoughts as you - I didn't want to die at 65 (or earlier!) a burden to my family because of my weight. It was time to do something drastic...

How Often Do You Weight Yourself?

It's funny how 5lbs makes such a difference in clothes, isn't it. That's the benefit to wearing clothes that fir well, and are not baggy. I definitely know where I am on the range by how jeans and skirts fit. I carry most of my extra weight in my bottom. Maybe I should try trusting that more.

How Often Do You Weight Yourself?

I'm 2.5 months out and check my weight every morning. I've been stalled for several weeks. I've lost 30 lbs so far. Hoping to start losing again soon.
  17. I'm 4 years post-op with the sleeve, and like most post-ops, I'm anxious about re-gain, naturally. I have a 5lb comfort zone, which accommodates Water weight and occasional indulgent periods. I weigh myself a few times a week. If I hit that top number, I go back to basics and can usually get back to the bottom number. I don't think my body really likes that lowest number much because it sure pushes back up easily and fast. ::sigh:: Some days I get frustrated, even at 4 years out, and I certainly don't want to get so anxious I develop an eating disorder. I have to remind myself that this is just part of being an adult in a culture that has access to excess. I'd like to try just weighing myself once a week or eventually maybe monthly, so I don't become obsessed with the scale. It's a slippery slope. How often do you weigh yourself, and did you do it differently at different post-op stages?
  18. Hello, I'm new here and just wondering if anyone else had to put weight on to qualify for lap band surgery? I'm nearly there according to my GP. How fussy are the surgeons? I am wide but also quite tall! Doing lots of research, ....Lisa

    Am i a failure?

No matter WHEN you go for that next fill, emphasize that you get hungy much quicker than in four hours, that you can eat quite a bit more than you were led to believe would be a satisfying meal and point out that your weight loss is pretty much stalled ... and tell them you NEED more than a 1cc fill to move you forward. Lots of docs don't want to do more than a 1cc fill, so you may be up against that mindset but push. Ask for AT LEAST 2 MORE CCS which would take you to 4. Probably not your sweet spot but I'm thinking if you get 2 ccs that's probably going to be a big concession on your doc's part. My first fill was 4 ccs on top of .6cc that was left in my band when they tested it in the operating room. That was too tight at the time and they removed 1cc. Then, a month later, took me right past that 3.6cc with no problem. At 5.8ccs and I've been at that point for a few weeks, I am at my sweet spot. For others it takes more than that. Our physical details are not all exactly the same, so what is enough for one, isn't enough for another and can be too much for a third person. So just work with it. When you get this next fill, make an appointment for as soon as they will let you have another fill. Better to have it on the books!
  20. So a little about me. Starting weight 252, i was banded on Oct 1st weighing 232. I've had a very good recovery except for a little bit of gas pain. Sincy surgery i've lost about 13-14 lbs. I can't seem to get anymore weight off of me. I've had 2 fills and still no restriction. I only have 2cc's in. I don't knkow what else to do. I can eat just about anything and as much as i want. I'm feeling like this tool i have is letting me down. Excercising 3 times a week. Doing my best at portion sizes. What's my problem now why can't i loose any weight. I have only lost 1.5 lbs in 7 weeks. I feel like such a failure.:w00t: When i get stressed i turn to food and i know that's not the thing to do but i'm loosing my drive. I have the band to help me and it's not doing what i paid for it to do. My Dr will only fill 1cc per visit. When am i going to get restriction? Somebody please help me.

    Reappearing period?

Weight loss is a huge reason for irregular periods. I have an IUD, I am only supposed to spot every once in a while. Since, I have had surgery I have had a full period for about 10 days at a time. I went to my gyn 2 weeks ago and she said it is due to rapid weight loss. I did not think I was having rapid weight loss then I thought, I have lost over 30 pounds since 11/23! That explains why my hormones are going a little crazy! She said when weight loss slows things should go back to normal. We shall see!
  22. I am very new to this whole process-I live in KC, MO and so far had gone to Dr. Malley's orientation and had a consult with him. Now.....onto the insurance stage. I have BC/BS Federal insurance and wondering if I need a letter of all failed past attempts at weight loss and if so, can anyone giveme an example of that letter. Like any of us who have been trying to lose weight for the last 20 years-have it documented somewhere. I don'T. I did get a letter from my primary care stating medical necessity-but the surgical center seems to want more-HELP

    Sleep Apnea Study

I was tested and diagnosed with hyperventilation and sleep apnea. I cried myself to sleep the first week because I had to wear that sexy mask and live plugged into the wall...and I travel internationally for work, I cant tell you how stressed I was trying to figure out how to make that work right in some 3rd world country where I couldn't ask for distilled water (in retrospect I was being dramatic, all that has worked out easily)....but forced myself through it, knowing the stress it puts on your heart. I had edema and was putting on weight daily. Now...OMGosh I would kill someone who tried to come between me and my CPAP. I didn't realize how strongly my life and health were being impacted until I actually had a few weeks of good rest under my belt. The test was kind of uncomfortable for me. Lots of wires, really nice room but you know people are watching you sleep on a camera so that was weird. But nothing uncomfortable.
  25. I started counting my weight loss from 6 months ago when I started the process. You're doing great! I can't wait to see how much I lose when I go for my post-op appt on Monday
