Thanks, everyone, for the great responses. I will keep all these words of wisdom in mind while on my journey! P.S. Yes, I lost waaay less weight on Weight Watchers, but the reason why I chose bariatric surgery is precisely because the other methods weren't working. So, yeah, I have high expectations. But as someone put it, once that weight is loss, it's not coming back. I know I have to concentrate on the direction of the scale, however slow it's moving.

Required weight loss.. concerned
ColleenErin1974 replied to laurileet's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know where you are coming from with having to lose weight before your surgery. I thought the same thing you did. If I haven't been able to successfully lose weight myself for the past 25 years, what makes now any different? The difference is that you really aren't dieting this time. You are making a total lifestyle change that you will need to follow from now on. I lost about 12 pounds in 3 months with my doctor supervised diet and that was before I made any diet changes that I will follow from now on. I met my surgeon after my 3 month supervised diet and he gave me some tips and so did the NUT. I was told to cut out all soda and sweetened beverages. Also no carbonated drinks. Increase my water or non caloric beverage intake to at least 64 oz a day. Try to cut as much sugar intake as I could and lower my carb intake too. Doing all of that made a huge difference for me and I lost some weight as I changed over. Finally, I started walking everyday. I just walked around my neighborhood and worked my way up to 4 miles a day-2 miles in the morning and 2 in the evening. Walking made a huge difference and it is important to your healing process after surgery. I decreased my pain immensely by getting up and walking as much as possible after the surgery. And lastly, I tried out my liquid diet about 2 months prior to my surgery date. I did it for 2 weeks and lost 18 pounds prior to surgery. You can do this! This is a life changing experience and is so worth it. Good luck to you! [emoji3] -
I am definitely no mathematician so I am not sure about your calculations. But I lost ALL my weight within the first year of surgery and kept it pretty much off up until a couple months ago. So a little over 5 years. I think at 5 months post-op I was down 40lbs

7 Days Post Op - When Will I Ever Start Losing Weight?
Lovemeifyoucan replied to lcle1234's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery was 7/31 and I did not see any weight loss until I got in 65grms of protein and my water!! It will come promise ! Remember your body is healing and it is holding on to whatever it can! -
I'm so glad I found this forum/app - I've read through a lot this past weekend. I just had my initial visit with the surgeons office and a nutritionist and have my next nut visit and my psych evaluation next month. Has anyone had experience with BCBS of TN? I'm worried that even though I have type II diabetes, I am at the bottom of the BMI range (within 3 lbs) and in looking at my past 5 years of weights at my PCP office, I was just below 35 BMI for most that time except for the past year. I guess I'm worried about denial and having to wait 5 more years!!! I've never ever been told I wasn't "big enough" before! Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Everyone of your goals touches me. I too want bend over and tie my shoes without stopping to breathe. Climbing stairs, better sex, looking on the outside how I feel on the inside, no more reflux, cute clothes, doing activities with my family that my weight doesn't allow right now .... On and on -
10 Days Until Lower Body Lift!
CowgirlJane replied to Kris's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Kris, My personal experience is that it wasn't the pain so much that gets you down... it's everything else! I have heard that lipo is kinda painful though. I now weigh the same as when I had surgery and since I just started exercise, I do have a little swelling. I came home heavier - I gained quite a bit of Water weight. Maybe it is because i lost about 8 pounds in the month before surgery, I am not sure. Everyone is different - many lose, but i didn't. He removed 5.5# of skin but said i didn't have enough fat to lipo. I think those 5# will show up on the scale once i no longer have swelling. I also didn't lose my appetite - I was very hungry. I was so glad I brought my Protein drinks. Again, I am an anomoly I guess. I didn't lose a full clothing size - yet, but my 8 pants (non stretch, standard brand sizing) fit me much better and are loose in the waist now. Before I always had to buy clothes that didn't make my skin spill out and that problem is eliminated everywhere except my side boobs (I didn't have surgery to correct that). My top size is the same, but oddly my bra band is shrunk even though i didn't have any surgery there. Somethings have redistributed and I now have a much more curvy/proportioned figure. And yes, I had a lot done at once. It is probably a good thing because I don't plan to go back for more anytime soon. I do love my results though. Good luck! -
Some of my clothes are getting to big for me...yippee. I am struggling however about if I should get rid of my clothes or hold onto them. My plan is not to ever get into a size 24 again, but I've said that before. In fact, over the last 4 years I have lost weight twice , gave my size 24's away just to find I gained it back and there I was shopping for my size 24's. Is this going to be any different? Has anyone else felt the same way?

No "Steve Harvey" this time..

@@Chioni.RNY my plan originally stated that I had to complete my 6 months of motivated weight loss, get approved and then I had to schedule my surgery 6 months from my approval date. So it was going to make my process a 1+ year long. Luckily my husband's HR department was very willing to work with their UHC rep and figure out what was actually expected of me. After I posted my response to @@Djmohr earlier, the HR department emailed me back and said I DON'T have to wait any longer and can go on the books as soon as my surgeon's office wants to put me there woo hoo! It's still been almost 9 months since I began :| -
I was banded 11/8/12. Weighed 230 pounds and wire size 20 jeans. (I'm vertically challenged)Yesterday I weighed 187 and wore a snug 14 all day!!! I feel soooo great! My knees don't hurt and clothes are fun again. It is taking more patience than I thought it would. Fills seem too far apart sometimes! I find I lose when I low carb and plateau when I don't. Better than gaining any day! The best advise I got about my band was "the band doesn't work when you are eating, it works two hours later" so true! Still got my eye on those sassy size eight jeans I have hanging by my elliptical, but at least now it seems possible!

You might want to cover up your surgical scars.....they might be impacted by the process. As far as any other impact upon the band, there really should be no problem. Now, with regard to tanning helping out your self esteem, I think a really good dose of Skin Cancer will work miracles in making you feel more like a complete person. Yep, I sure do. Isn't it wonderful how we are able to make really great decisions for ourselves (losing weight) and then be able to turn and around and make really stupid ones? (subjecting ouselves to rays that are PROVEN to cause skin cancer) all for the sake of having someone else see us and think we are "better" because we have a burned organ hanging from our bones? Also, there is the added benefit of having, later in life, drier and prematurely wrinkled skin because of the tanning. That should be even BETTER for your self esteem. Jeez. S. (ps:....you're smarter than that...stay away from those tanning booths.)

Don't limit yourself and your happiness on their behalf. Your friends should love you no matter what you look like. Maybe you losing weight is making them consider their life choices. The fact of reality is that people change, always. I expect my friends to embrace the change, as I do with all of their life changes. This journey can be super tough, as you probably know, and that's why it's SO important to surround yourself with positve, supportive people.

Forum Is So Helpful
Dooter replied to gettinthinner's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's great!! I still think you're doing well, but it's good that you have that attitude, because that will keep you on track the rest of your life. Even when the weight is gone you will have to have this same mindset. Good for you!! God bless your journey! -
i have posted a few questions in this week since joining the forum. This is my first forum experience. I just want to say to all who has responded to my questions, that you have been such a wonderful source of support. I am truly appreciative of your comments, suggestions, advice, knowledge and sharing. I am amazed by how much knowledge people have and feel I can certainly rely on this site as providing me with good advice. It is so encouraging to hear stories of remarkable success. On the other hand, it also points out my need to perhaps take things a bit more seriously. I certainly don't have much knowledge about nutrition and have not been counting anything and have not been exercising. So now I realize that I must improve and I do feel encouraged to do so. I will take my weight loss more seriously and continue to learn from what others post. It really does make me realize how I have to do more. ie. I wasn't taking Vitamins and see from others that this is to be part of the daily routine. (I simply could not stand those chewable ones. ) Thanks again to all who have replied to my questions. I truly have benefited from your advice.

No. I dont know if you remember but in the recent Melbourne Marathon there was a team event and Andy was looking for participants here. I emailed him and said I'd love to be a part of it, but anyway, after I'd gotten all excited it turned out he'd organised coverage on Today Tonight, which is a current affairs program on over here. I didnt want to let him down, but aside from not having the time to commit to group training, I really did not want to be on television. I didnt want people who've known me in my past, say ex colleagures, see that over the years since I'd left work I'd gotten fat as a house and had weight loss surgery. I truly dont mind people knowing now that I've had WLS, but I"m much much shyer about the fact that people who never knew me as fat would find out that I got fat, if that makes sense. And whilst I hope the story was motivational to people, I really didnt care to hand over creative control to the media, especially to a show that's notorious for scandalous and inflammatory journalism. It could have been presented in any way and I'd be helpless to control it. No thanks. So I did the run on my own, went in the 7.5km event. It went well for the team and I'm so glad for them but being on TV wasnt for me.

Hi everyone! Hope all is well. I was wondering if there were any Bypass vets out there who's highest weight was the in the 400's. Mine was 437LB and I just want to know how much weight have you lost and about how long did it take you to lost it after surgery? Im curious because I am 3 weeks out and have only lost 5LBS. But I am not eating hardly anything. So just curious. Thanks.

Hampton Roads and Tricare Prime
BandedBrother replied to keamreeves's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm about three steps behind Happy2BMe in the process. And in reality still not completely decieded if I'll do it. There are significant lifestyle changes that will need to be implemented and I'm slowly processing their impact. This site has been an excellent source of info though so I'd recommend reading and looking to see if some of your questions have been asked by others. For me a part of this is about being preventative. I weigh 265, take 3 meds and use a CPAP. I've wreastled with my weight throughout my 21 yrs of service (only once did they catch me and put me on the "Fatboy" program  though). Though I'm confident I can drop weight I creeps back, and gets higher. My hope is the band may aid in being a "stop gap" when life breaks up my fitness regimen--which is normally when the pounds return. If there is a theme I've gleemed from reading various post is the band is a tool, not an end in itself. Hope this helps! -
Happy NY! My "fun" was watching my husband drool on himself at (9:00pm) while my 5yr old son and I had a photo shoot spread featuring his face on fb! Woot woot talk about fun!! My goal (inspiration) is to drop a lot of weight by summer so I can at least get these pasty white legs out In the sun after being MIA for 15 years. My regret is being hardheaded in the gym and not learning that after you've been on a treadmill for 45 mins just because a "fit" girl gets on a treadmill beside you doesn't mean it's a "Instant competition" and you have to make damn sure she gets off her treadmill first (thus sparking the inside "that's what I though B fist pump" ) my Legs hurt!! Waaaah!

I'm at that point right now! I'm soo anxious I just want to get the surgery done tomorrow already! I'm sure he'll be proud of me after I lose weight and keep it off

Ola, Portuguesa! Sure it's your decision to make, but it's nice to have your family and friends' support for such a life-changing event. Have you tried explaining it to him patiently and unemotionally? You've done your research, right? Bring him some statistics. Show him that this is the most effective way to permanently lose weight. Take him to the next free seminar, or bring him with you to the doctor's appointment so he can ask his questions and get answers straight from the surgeon. I'm 55, married, with a kid....and the only person who suggested that I try again the old-fashioned way was my Mom.... who first put me on a diet 48 years ago when I was 7. Is that even rational? Our parents are just worried about surgery because they love us. Once I explained to her that I had made my decision and she needed to get on board, she did. Now she's thrilled that I've finally lost the weight. So now... get this... she tells me I'm getting too thin and need to stop. See.....? They're irrational because they love us. So just be patient with your Dad, and try to get him all the information he needs to understand why you feel you have to do this. I'll bet once he's fully informed, he'll come around. Boa sorte, amiga!!!

Heart valve issues anyone?
OutdoorsGirl replied to liveaboard15's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have AFIB and was able to have surgery. After the surgery, my heart rate was really high and my regular medications weren’t working. I ended up in the hospital an extra week until they were able to get the rate under control with more medications. The cardiologist will sign off on the surgery if it will benefit your condition. Weight reduction should also make heart procedures safer if you need to have them in the future. I’m seeing a heart specialist next month and expect that I’ll need to have a procedure to get my heart rhythm back to normal. Hopefully January will be a good month for weight loss. Good luck to you. -
You also have to consider the man you are dealing with. If they are around long enough they're going to notice the weight loss, the small amounts of food, and your eating habits.

Fallen off the wagon and can't seem to get up
hrhlaurie replied to Disabledaccount's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There's no way around it, it sucks. You got the sleeve and your post-operative results were dismal. I'd be mad, sad and on my dieticians doorstep demanding help. Our little sleeve is an amazing tool but only you know what you're feeding it. I'm avoiding all carbs since my body will more readilyburn fat if it doesn't have carbs as fuel. Keep them as low as possible, substitute a Protein shake for one meal and eat mostly lean protein. Get back to basics and you'll kick-start your weight loss again. During my next stall I'm going to need very similar encouragement. Hard to see the forest for the trees when we are so invested in this process so objectivity goes right out the window! Hang in there and keep trying! -
