  1. 9 months post RNY. Down 135 since surgery. Down 184 from HW. ***I've begun actively selling and getting rid of my old clothes. It's hard. It's a thing. I was attached to that wardrobe and there was a lot of time and money invested in finding clothing that fit, clothing that was for different weight fluctuations (or ever increasing), fit my needs and was as flattering as possible given being morbidly obese. There was clothing for work, special occasions, and travel. I should have gotten rid of items starting long ago. But I notoriously hang onto things "just in case," and then when I finally get rid of them, I want them a week later. And there is the ever present fear of failure of needing big clothes again someday. But, it was time........I'm also being selective where my items go, and I'm lazy. I would like to get some money where possible but will donate to the right cause. Despite hearing over and over that places gladly accept plus-sized clothing, I'm not finding that to be the case. I don't live in a metropolitan area where there are lots of options. The one women's shelter in town was not interested as they have no place to store clothing. Our one consignment store is a bit sketchy. You get the idea. I posted some items on social media (even that is more work than I am really interested in, so Poshmark, Mercari or the like is off the table). Long story short....a lady purchased some of my favorite items. I didn't ask for much money for them. I'm sure I could have gotten more but by this point, once I've made the decision to clean out, I just want them gone. I also let her take a great many items that had been altered but not professionally. Items that I didn't feel that I should charge for. She was so grateful and so excited. I was thrilled to see someone as excited by the nicer items as I once was. Having some of the clothing gone is liberating and I'm glad to be moving forward. I think the clothing was a security blanket of sorts that I just needed to be ready to let go of. ***I had my first appointment with a therapist. So glad I did that. I had some very specific qualifications I was looking for as well as having experience with bariatric patients. She is a perfect fit and was able to help me process some of my feelings and progress. ***As always, am grateful for the level-headed and accurate advice received here.

  3. So yes, I lost weight and comments increased 10 fold - I get it no mostly do not mind. The hang up for me is that I do not feel hot. My niece said face it line up 50 or even 1000 women your age or 5 years younger and you are either the number 1 or 2 in looks. bi do not feel it though. That is what gets me.

    Possibly looking at revision; dumping syndrome

    It's been only 15 weeks since my surgery. I have not dumped yet. I'm trying to avoid anything near dumping. I can eat cottage cheese with about 5 ounces of pineapple without dumping. I eat this as a daily treat. The threat of dumping is a real incentive to avoid the sweet or greasy foods. I used to be able to eat half a pecan pie over the course of a day. I don't think I've had any since surgery. A box of donuts was also a threat to my weight and health. If everyone in the family had two, That would leave 8 for me. Now I don't bring them home. I hope I won't have any incidents to report a year from now.

    His objection to your weight loss is not about you, it's about him. Next time he makes a comment like that, call him on it. It doesn't have to be accusatory or confrontational, just a calm even-tempered question. Why does he need to cut you down, does it make him feel good to hurt your feelings? Why is your appearance more important to him than your good health? If you are not able to ask him those questions, find a counselor who will. He's either dealing with personal insecurity and afraid he'll lose you (which he/you can work through), or he only wants a relationship in which he has total control over every aspect of what you do and will demand that his needs and desires outweigh yours (from which you should run). Having unraveled, and eventually ended, a dysfunctional relationship, I understand the fear of facing that reality. It was the hardest and scariest part of my life and took more emotional stamina and personal strength than I thought I had in me. It was also the best thing I ever did for myself, and I never could have done it alone. Our couples counselor, and eventually my private therapist, saved my life. Please get help, you deserve it. If he refuses counseling, that is a huge red flag.

    First month weight loss

    I am 6' tall, weight 298 at the outset of this journey. I lost 20 pounds in 10 days on the pre-op liquid diet (surgery was scheduled in a cancellation spot, so my pre-op diet was shortened from 14 days to 10 days) weighing in at 277 on surgery day. At my one week follow up, my weight was 273 - so down 4 pounds from pre-surg weight (24 from start weight). My doctor said all progress measured going forward would be from my initial weight of 298. At my one month follow up, my weight was 265 - so 8 more pounds in 3 weeks. Honestly, I expected more and was very disappointed with that weight. When I mentioned it to my surgeon he told me that many people don't see a large loss on the scale between the 1-week and 1-month appointments, because your body is in a major metabolic flux. Your entire digestive, hormonal and endocrine system is essentially saying "WTF happened?" and shifting around trying to adjust to the "new you" on the inside and radical change in diet. His theory is that this is the cause of the notorious and dreaded week 3 stall. So, be kind to yourself. Follow the diet your surgeon has prescribed and have faith that your body will respond in due time. It's hard when you are not seeing the big loss on the scale that you expected right away, I'm right there with you. Try to find non-scale victories to motivate and inspire you. I had a little silent celebration when I sat in a seat in the theater last week and didn't feel the arms of the chair digging into my sides (I carry my weight in my torso area). I just sat down and didn't feel like I had to wedge myself in. The chair didn't know how many pounds I lost and the scale didn't matter one bit in that moment. It was a little thing, but I'm carrying that feeling of victory around like a mental trophy.

    Dude is just an ex, not family or anything. You are not obligated to help him. And even then, if anything compromises ur weight loss then cut it out of your life.

    FOLLOW YOUR PROGRAM! 15-17 lbs in month 1 is very normal. I lost 16 lbs the first month, and I started out well over 300 lbs. A 15-25 lb loss in the first month is a pretty normal range. I think the issue is that a lot of people's expectations are shaped by shows like "My 600 lb Life". You have to keep in mind that those people start at well over 600 lbs - so that are not your average WLS patient. Don't go back to all liquids if it's only an attempt to speed up your weight loss. You need to follow your program. The weight WILL come off if you stick to your program. I promise!
  9. stalls happen to almost everyone. Just stick to your program and stay off your scale for a few days. And know that it WILL break. Since it's been almost three weeks, it should break really soon... as far as being a slow loser, people lose at different rates for all different reasons - age, gender, body composition (% of muscle), genetics, starting BMI, whether or not you lost weight before surgery, etc. The only two factors that you really have any control over are activity level and how closely you stick to your program. If you do well with those two factors, you WILL lose weight, whether fast or slow. I was a slow-loser from the very beginning, and I ended up losing over 200 lbs. So don't give up!
  10. Hi, I had some spots near my incision sites that felt like a mass. I am not sure if that is what you are describing. I thought it might be a hematoma or seroma. I did call the doctor's office a few days after I got out from the hospital, as I was was worried about it. He told me to put a warm compress on it and said to keep an eye on it. He thought it was likely a hematoma. At my 1 month post op the nurse practioner identified it as scar tissue. It was the size of a baseball a few days after surgery, it is now the size of a grape. Mine was sore to the touch, but isn't now (at almost 2 months post op). I think it is best you call the doctor, so you can describe it to them, and they can tell you if it needs medical attention, if you just need to keep an eye on it, or if it is a normal part of the healing process.     Post VSG Regrets?

    Yes. Lots of regrets but most of it is psychological. I found a bariatric therapist that I'll start seeing next week so I'm hoping to learn better coping mechanisms and a better insight on my weight loss blues. 7 months after surgery about 80 pounds lost and I should be ecstatic. My knees dont hurt anymore I can walk without my feet hurting and stairs are no longer a dreaded force of terror. I should mention that I have been diagnosed with major depressive disorder before surgery and I thought it was under control but faced with not being able to have comfort coping foods old symptoms flared up.   12. What a handsome boy but he is a big strong boy which will be a consideration post surgery. What time frames were you given regarding lifting (includes pulling) heavy items? Usually after abdominal surgery, we’re restricted to only 5-10lbs for the first two weeks, then increasing to 15lbs, then 20lb so you don’t damage your internal stitches & staples but there are variations. Even well trained dogs on leads can suddenly dash or dart or you have to give a tug on the leash to redirect them causing your stitches/staples to be strained or pulled. Having the energy to go for a 2 mile walk is very individual too lost surgery as we all recover & heal differently. Best advice is go slowly. Maybe have a friend or family member walk Sven to begin & then you join them but not take him yourself until you’re allowed to lift any weight. Congrats on your surgery. Whoo hoo!

    We all are very different. We lose at different rates & our experiences of stalls can be different - longer or shorter duration, more of less frequently. I’m sorry you are experiencing this frustrating plateau. As @ms.sss asked, what are your stats? What is your caloric intake? Do you track your food & does your nutritionalist review it with you. There is a lot of variation in food portion size & calorie recommendations. Personally, I only got to around a cup of food at 6 months when I reached goal. Those first 3 months I was only eating 1/4 to 1/3 solid food so my calorie intake was lower than others. Are you on any prescribed medications? Some can slow or affect your weight loss rate too. I can track my biggest weight gains to changes in my hormones - puberty & menopause were the biggest - so there could be something in what you said about the article. (Could you include a link to the article please as I couldn’t find it in their site - looking in the wrong place most likely 😉.) I noticed that Sage offer a resting metabolic rate assessment. Did you do one before surgery? If so it may be interesting to see if there has or hasn’t been a change.

    My story

    Ok. I’m at a stall. I’ve only lost roughly 15-17 lbs. the stall is 2 lbs that keep leaving and coming back. I’m at week 5 and will be at week 6 on Monday. Been in this stall since around the start of week 3. Ive been doing purée foods but not really. Trying to do mostly liquids. Have a really hard tine getting 64 oz of water down. Tried puréed recipes from a gastric sleeve cookbook: turkey chili, noodlessLagnasa,cottage cheese, soft eggs with cheese, refried beans, navy bean soup, chicken broth. Chicken tortilla soup. Everything puréed. But I am so depressed because weight not coming off. I feel as if I did this urgent and now I can’t even get this weight off this way. Anyone else feel like this. I am going to go back to just all liquids to see if this will help.
  15. When I had Covid in 2020 I gained weight because it gave me tons of inflammation ex. arthritis and asthma. It’s what propelled me toward WLS. Stress and lack of sleep could be holding the weight on too. Just stay on track as best you can and your body will right itself. Funny how drinking lots of water helps fight viruses AND helps weight loss!

    September Surgery Buddies!!

    wow, sounds like you're doing fantastic! I'm 6 days post op and down 11lbs my start weight was 251.4 and today's is 240 on the dot! my weird burps are gone and all body parts are back to working they way they should except the soreness from the incisions, I'm able to keep up with my protein and water and vitamins. Sleep is much better in my recliner (once I find a comfy spot.) I feel like everything is going well now, those first few days are sure rocky but I feel so much better than I did! Its a crazy journey but well worth it!

    The article was on sage bariatric which is a weight loss center in Texas. They have a lot of good information but this the first time I have read anything specific to women. Most of my weight loss happened in the first 6 to 8 weeks so far 30 lbs. But for the past 6 weeks since I have been eating solid food I have not lost weight. My nutritionist suggested eating more calories since I was having difficulty in the beginning eating anything over a 1/2 cup. But I am pass that now and I have to make myself stop at a cup so that I don’t overeat and/or reach my restriction.

    First month weight loss

    @DanielleMc79, it may be misleading to compare 1st month weight loss without taking into account surgery day weight (and height), as well as if a person lost a considerable amount of weight already before surgery. All these factors (and more) will affect how much a person will lose. With that said: I'm 5'2". Surgery Day weight was 223.2 lbs. Lost 11.8 lbs in the two weeks immediate prior to surgery on the liquid diet (no other loss before that). At one month post, I was 201 lbs, so a total of 22.2 lbs lost (ASIDE, its funny because for the past 3 years I always thought I lost 21lbs tat first month, but I just checked my records, and looks like I've been lying all this time!!!) How tall are YOU? Surgery Day weight?. Any weight lost before surgery?

    Do you happen to have link to this article? I would be interested in reading it. My initial response would be: if you are following your program, try to give it time, people lose weight at different rates, and is probably a little early at 6 weeks to think this isn't going to work. But I get the anxiety, you will read pages and pages of other people who feel the same way. With that said, to better offer suggestions (just suggestions, mind you as we are mostly not medical professionals and cannot assume we would know what is best for you based on a post on an internet forum)...what are your stats? Starting weight, height? How much weight lost so far? What is your daily average caloric intake?
  20. I recently came across an article that stated that a small percentage of women ‘miss the hormone’ mark in that they only lose 30-40 lbs total. This seems to only affect female sleevers. Has anyone heard of this phenomenon. I have been in a weight stall for almost 6 weeks and I have been researching articles to help explain what is happening when I came across this article. now on top of everything else I am questioning my decision not to have bypass over sleeve. I was terrified of bariatric surgery and thought that the sleeve was less invasive even with the lack of long term data on its effectiveness. To say the least I am totally demoralized at the moment and feel that I made the wrong decision. I am three months out which I know is early still but I am scared that the more I heal and the more food I can eat this will lead to eventual weight regain instead of just a stall

    Weight Loss Stagnation 10 Months Post-Op

    @Paul.VDH No worries - OK, my 2 cents on "pouch reset" and "counting calories" - Let's look at it logically.... We all know you have to consume less calories than you burn - Otherwise = weight gain. At 10 months out, let's face it, you're bored with the "diet" and ready to venture into new foods. At least I know I was. For me, I simply had to come to a compromise with myself and knock on wood, so far it's working. You can do the pouch reset, and you WILL lose weight by going through the phases again - IF you're doing that to get back on track, then go for it. IF you're doing it to lose 5-10 lbs quickly and then go back to what you're doing today - It's a temp fix. No different than what many of us have done before on previous diets. Use the app to make yourself AWARE of what you're doing to self-sabotage and make realistic modifications from there. If you want something that's "forbidden" (cake, alcohol, fried food, etc.), have it - BUT, in a reasonable quantity - I was just talking to a friend last night who also did the surgery and we were talking about these things - Instead of eating something like it's the last time you will EVER have it again (food funeral?), have a bite or two and then put it up and replace it with something more reasonable if you're still hungry. Example - Last night my husband had country fried steak (one of my all time favorites - can you say comfort food!!) - Rather than have 3-4 ounces of it - I had two bites and was still hungry so I had a protein shake. A month or so ago, I would have eaten it until I was stuffed and then swear I wouldn't indulge again (and of course I would!). Drinking... well, again, I told myself that if I was going to fall off the wagon, I should make it worth it and over do it. I'm consciously working on enjoying a glass of wine (vs. a bottle) or a glass of bourbon (vs 1/2 a bottle!). At just over a year out, I pretty much eat and drink whatever I want. It's been an adjustment, but slowly but surely I'm getting where I want to be. Many days/weeks I don't track. When I find that I'm self-sabotaging (I get on the scale each and every day), I go back to tracking. Seeing it in black and white (both the scale and the tracking) helps me get back on track to maintain and/or lose. I may or may not ever get to my goal weight, but I'll be damned if I'm going back to where I started.

    September Surgery Buddies!!

    The gas pains are so annoying but they do get better over time. I’m four days out and definitely still have it sometimes. One thing (sorry if TMI) is that the gas pains get less bad once you have a bowel movement. It took three DAYS for that to happen and I immediately get better and had way less gas. The “foamies” I get when I consume too fast. I forgot to sip yesterday and chugged probably 3-4 oz. of water and was in agony for probably an hour. The hunger pangs are the worst, it feels like my stomach is literally twisting itself like a wet washcloth. I made protein Jello (orange sugar free gelatin with half a scoop of whey protein isolate dissolved in the cold water used for the gelatin) for when I absolutely can’t hack the “grinding”. The big packet of Jello makes 8 portion cups and I usually eat about half a portion cup, so a whopping 8 cal. It helps a lot. I haven’t weighed myself yet today (doing it every day for the first two weeks per doctor’s suggestion—“you’re gonna wanna see the numbers”, then weekly after that) but yesterday morning I was 9.6 down from surgery weight in three days. I know that won’t last but some of these are numbers I haven’t seen in a decade, I already had to size down in my favorite Carhartt shorts, and had to throw out the larger size chonies because they were starting to hang off me. My blood pressure the day before surgery on two BP meds was 145/85. My PCP took me off the one with the water pill as of the day after surgery and last night when I checked, my BP was 123/68 on one med!! I am STUNNED how fast that happened. Almost like my body is like “YES let’s get this done, pitter patter!” Energy level is coming back, but am still weak. I walk 5k every day at least and once the incisions heal and I feel like I can sweat safely I’ll start running. Day after surgery was the absolute worst and then it’s a dramatic improvement. Already the best decision I ever made for my body. It’s really amazing to think, “This is the last time I’m ever gonna see this d**n number on that scale.”
  23. leaks are rare and usually occur within the first day or two after surgery. The typical symptoms are nausea, vomiting, rapid heart rate, and fever. As Arabesque said, pains and twinges aren't unusual and are part of the healing process. Also, I agree with her about the lack of weight loss. Most of us leave the hospital weighing more than they did when they went in due to the IV fluids - I've read about people "gaining" up to 10 lbs from that. It takes a few days to work it's way out...

    Congrats!!! Everything is going well, I do have hunger pains, but I'm sticking to the script!! Protein & water an ounce every 15 min! On the bright side already down 12lbs! How awesome is that! Fastest I've ever lost weight in my life 🤣! What about you how much have you lost?
  25. I have had zero pain. Up until today. I had surgery on the 8th so just over a week ago. I’ve lost zero weight. I’m following the diet perfectly. But today, I get a pain that’s just under my left side rib cage. Sometimes it’s on my left side where my ribs are but deeper. I heard leaks can be a complication. I’m terrified of that!
