  1. Hi BandaCat -- I'm one of those people that refuse to "count" calories since being banded (June 2006). Like you, I have counted calories for decades with little success. I am working towards life style changes. I eat until I am comfortably satisified. I also do not deprive myself of pleasures from time to time. About 2 weeks ago I went on vacation. During my vacation I had a couple of cocktails, I ate a whole candy bar, and even had some light ice cream one day. I'm happy to report, I didn't gain 1 ounce on my vacation. I didn't lose either. But I allowed myself to enjoy the whole experience (per my band allowance). You have to remember that the band is a tool. You can't eat the candies, ice cream, etc. everyday. You still have to work very hard at making healthy choices and following the banded rules. The more healthy choices you make and eventually exercise you do, the weight will fall into place. Right after surgery, your goal is to heal. Once you heal the second goal is to get some good restriction (find your sweet spot). The rest, at least for me, has fallen into place. Best wishes, Melissa Lea

    "normal Meal"

Oh my goodness! That's.exactly how I'm feeling right now. I'm on day five of my week long post op diet and I can't wait to have something other than broth and water and ice pops, etc. I just said to my mom, I'm going to take my last vitamin for the night just so I can chew! Lol
  3. I also decided to only tell my best friend and husband because after I started to talk about it many people were against it so I only wanted supporting people surrounding me. About your little one I watch a 3 year old but I had to take off 2 weeks to recover. It is very important that you won't pick them up for at least for 3 weeks I would say since your incisions will need to heal, the first 2 weeks were the hardest ones in my case but at my 3rd I feel amazing and trust me it's worth it. Good luck. Oh and probably you can drive the 2 week or as long as you don't take pain meds it's up to you. Trust me you'll get to know your body pretty well

    Help!

I saw the dietitian today. The plan she has put me on is two carb choices each at Breakfast, lunch and dinner and two Snacks of one carb choice each. Three ounces of Protein at each meal, none at the snacks. Hopefully, if I keep the carbs as veggies and some fruit I will lose the required weight. The starchy carbs will have to be extremely limited and avoided if at all possible. I brought up the subject of Protein shakes. She is NOT a fan! "Too many carbs, too much sugar!" When I got back to Waco, I stopped at the store and found some single serve packets of Jay Robb protein shakes with one gram of carbs and no sugar so I will being using these when I don't feel like eating a regular meal. I'm also going to look for some unflavored Protein powder to add to smoothies. She was real big on smoothies. It's just for three months, I can do this.

    Stall and no support

Until you get to talk with your Nutritionist, therapist, and Bariatric team, why not gather all of the "comfort foods" daily and donate them to the homeless? After a week of doing this EVERY day, I think your family will get the hint: You are NOT going to eat that kind of food. You are simply off track--mentally as well as physically. Go and get yourself some guidance. It can be done. I did it after a 4 year hiatus. I know that you can get back on track too. You just have to want to badly enough to do so. You CAN do this. Get mov'n! Keep us posted as to your progress. We care--really we do. Prayers going up for you.
  7. An egg hopefully will be my first...in another week. I have been on liquids religiously for a total of four and a half weeks now, I am 2 weeks post op. I watch my family eat eggs every morning. I feel like a National Geographic camera man watching.
  8. I have had three fills, I have 7cc in a 10cc band. I have trouble with breads, some rice, and chx breast, basically all of the normal problem foods. I PB, slime, etc. I am not seeing consistent weight loss, but part of that may be weighing on two seperate scales (my dr is 3 hours away) and I don't think my home digital scale is all that accurate... seems accurate for my dh and kids but is 10-15 lighter than the scale in dialysis at work. Ugh. I am using my BodyBugg so I know what I am eating/burning on a daily basis. My nurse is coming into town next week to do fills, do I get a little fill or leave well enough alone?

    Banded December 22nd, 2010

Well I was banded Dec 16th and my weight loss was gong fine until my 2nd fill I have lost nothing! Well okay 2lbs in 3 weeks. But it seems like nohing! I had lost 36lbs up to that point! My Physician Assistant warned me this would happen and that weight gain could happen to but dang is it hard to deal with! I get so aggravated because it has slowed and non I am fighting the good old demons to stay strong and not slip into old habits! And not getting full really sucks!!! Glad to see others in the same boat! I hope by may we are all out of this.....
  10. You'll be bummed when you you're measured at the bridal store and the size is about 4 sizes larger than you actually wear. I'm 5'5" and weigh 145 lbs now and I just picked up my size 16 wedding dress for my Dec 3rd wedding last week. It fits perfectly. After they measured me, they told me the bottom part measured at a size 4 and the top measured as a 16! I'm now wearing size 6-8 pants and an XL top and a size 16 dress??!! Yep. The girl who works there told me thats how bridal stores size. My fiance who wears a size 35 pants also got a size 38 and they fit perfectly in his suit. I thought I'd said goodbye to a 16 forever. Oh well. Congrats to you! When is your wedding? This is my 2nd (my husband of 19 yrs died 4 yrs ago) so we're having a very small wedding at a park in Glendora, Ca. Going on a 7day Mexican cruise the next day. Can't wait. We leave for Ca next Tues (we live in OR). My fiance's family lives in Glendora so that's why we're going there. Anyway, have a great Thanksgiving too! And congrats again! Marci
  11. Hello, everyone! I am a 32 year old female from Portland, Oregon, and I'm in the very beginning stages of my WLS journey. I just applied last week to a clinic, was got the call on Thursday from the insurance coordinator. She said that my insurance does cover the surgery, and that I don't need to do any doctor supervised diets - the only requirement is that the insurance company wants to know an exact surgery date 6 months in advanced. So basically at my first appointment I'll get my surgery date (probably sometime in November, I'm thinking) and then the waiting will begin. I'm 5'2 and I weight 240. I've been heavy most of the life, although in high school I was down to about 140, thanks to bulimia (not proud of that, but eating disorders definitely play a role in my weight history. I have 4 beautiful children, and last year I decided that I wanted to become a surrogate. I tried my best to get healthy and lose weight, and I went from 250 to 180. It was at this time that I was matched with an infertile couple and I started my surrogacy journey. I gained a bunch of weight due to the fertility meds I was on, and I got pregnant weighing about 200. I gained a lot of weight with that 5th pregnancy, and I delivered at about 260. Sadly, here I am 6 months later, and i'm only down about 20 pounds from when I delivered. But being able to hand an infertile couple the gift of their healthy, beautiful newborn son was by far one of the coolest moments of my life, and I will never regret doing that. I am now officially hanging up my uterus ( ) and saying no more pregnancies! It is time that I focus on me, and my health. I am so tired of my weight being such an issue for me. I hate the self loathing that I feel every time I see myself in a mirror, and see a picture of myself. I am tired of not feeling worthy to my parents, especially compared to my skinny siblings. I'm just tired of being fat. I have a very supportive husband whom I love dearly, and I know that with him, we can do anything. I'm excited about the possibility of having this surgery done, and I'm excited about getting healthy.
  12. I got my surgery date today for 6/30/11 (fingers crossed for the FINAL ok from the insurance)! This is going to be long winded but I am really glad I have found this forum of people that truly understand! I decided on LapBand as a last resort. I have tried everything gone up and down 70 lbs here and there but have never been able to maintain it. My goal was to be thin by the time my daughter started Kindergarten in order to avoid embarrassment for her – that came and went…. Then my goal was to be skinny by my 30th b-day – that is in two weeks….. I have now decided that instead of moping about 30 I am going to make a change for me that is lasting. I started nutrition counseling back in February and even through the counseling, I was not 100% sure that this is what I wanted to do. Last month, I made the firm decision to proceed and now I can’t wait to start a new life at 30! I am terrified of surgery so I am hoping that part goes smoothly. I am also terrified of giving up food. I know I can do it… Someone else on here described it as getting a divorce from your best friend or something similar. I cannot agree more with this statement! I am addicted to food….. It is there for me. I have been slightly panicked about not being able to eat this or that…. I am hoping that the surgery will ease that constant want for food. I am trying my best to make a lot of changes prior to surgery so that I am not in a complete panic after. Then there is always the lingering question of “what if it doesn’t work?” Any advice, thoughts, support, etc. is greatly appreciated. I have a great support system; however, the majority of them are thin so while they are GREAT they can’t really understand the full struggle with weight and food!

    Fitbit

I use my Fit Bit every single day/night. I barely take mine off. It tracks my steps, my sleep, my activity levels over the course of a day and I find that it inspires me to want to do more, just to earn badges. I think it's the best $100 I ever spent. I use it in conjunction with MFP to track my food intake, weight goals, and exercise goals. I bought it around six or seven months out from surgery, just when I hit that dreaded slowdown of weight loss. I'm still losing fairly slowly as far as the scale goes, but I'm losing sizes, which is more important, IMO. In my opinion, Fit Bit has the best customer service of almost any company I've ever dealt with. My original Fit Bit stopped displaying or tracking after a couple of months. I emailed their customer service department, expecting to get blown off. Instead, they contacted me with several suggestions for resetting the Fit Bit. When those didn't work, I emailed them back, and they replaced my Fit Bit within a week! I am totally impressed with them! I know nothing about the Body Bug, but the Fit Bit is easy to wear, doesn't require an arm strap, and has great customer service. I'm sold on Fit Bit.

    Diet Pills

I'm just very sad that I gained some weight. I work really hard, I jog two to three miles aday and walk one mile. For me to gain back eight pounds is hurtful. I don't understand what is going on, it's not like I eat much.

    Not Prepared-Please help!

I followed my surgeon's directions exactly... first few weeks, was broth, soup, yogurt, ice pops. I had no issues and was back to work in 1 wk post. op.
  16. Hey Everyone! Ive had a few things come up since my last appointment with the surgeon. This was all through my GP. Turns out my iron levels are now all of a sudden super high(ferritin was 417), and my liver enzymes also high but thats been an ongoing issue for me. I rarely eat meat and have never had high iron in the past so i have no idea whats happened there. What im now concerned about is my liver! My surgeon does a standard 2 week pre op before surgery to help shrink the liver but im so scared it wont work! My GP sent me for an ultrasound of my liver and it shows moderate fatty liver disease. Ive been reading ways to shrink my liver now before my next surgeons appointment but all the results i get are what im already doing. Ive always eaten fairly well and even lately ive cut back heaps on the junk and comfort eating knowing i have the surgery coming up yet this has still happened! So fearful that itll get to the big day, they will open me up and then not operate because its too large still😭 what happens if the pre op diet just doesnt work? Im almost tempted to just start my pre op diet now! I dont even have my surgery date yet!
  17. I had my sleeve on Oct 5th, I lost 11 pounds during my 2 week pre-op diet and another 10 pounds the first 8 days after surgery. I have since gained back 4 pounds of the weight lost and I am not sure why. I am eating the smushy/blended foods but have to eat about an ounce or so every hour or hour and a half to get the 50 grams of Protein in. I am basicly eating the same foods I eat and lost the 11 pounds pre-op but have gained 4 pounds eating them. I am open to any and all suggestions.

Its like the Elephant in the corner

Mark- I was banded on the 21st of Feb, 2004. I weighed 240 and now I weigh 216. My second week that I just went through seemed to be a little slow but I am hoping that the next 4 weeks before my fill I will loss more. I would like to be filled sooner but I guess the doctors want to wait 6 weeks. I also run on my tredmill 1 mile a day. That is all I can do at this time. I haven't exercised since I was a cheerleader in college. Well let me know how you are doing. I have a feeling it will all work out. Eryn

    bad taste in mouth

In the past couple of weeks I have noticed that I have a bad taste or bad breath especially when I am eating or drinking. Has anyone else experienced this? Does it go away? Does this have anything to do with stomach acid? Going for my second fill today. I have had little to no restriction. I have 1.6 cc's in my 4 cc band. Everyone have a great day. Kathy
  20. How did you know you had reached your sweet spot? I've had 2 fills. I'm now at 5.5 in a 10 cc band. The last fill has been quite challenging for me. It seemed fine the first week. I noticed the restriction but coped well and lost a few pounds quickly, but then the second week was so much harder as I was sliming and threw my food back up quite often. I seem to be better now and make sure I chew, chew, chew but can only eat small amounts at one time eg: 1/2 - 1 cup of food, can't eat a full apple and depending what I eat get hungry again 2-3 hours later. I'm losing weight still which is fantastic but I feel dizzy after bending down and then standing back up and not sure if I'm getting enough calories. Maybe my body is just adjusting to the limited amount of food- I don't know?! What are your experiences and how did you know you had reached your sweet spot?
  21. yes, all your symptoms are natural - i remember eating jello also a day or so after the surgery and it felt like it just sat there in between my boobs and hurt - this too will go away and ease with each passing day but don't expect to feel some relief for close to a week plus. not trying to be negative - just realistic. hang in there - 18 days post and i'm feeling like my old self only 18 lbs lighter :frown:
  22. I too am day three.. and I hurt like heck... but I have the time off and will walk and rest as long as it takes... only Popsicles tea jello and water so far and that makes me belch ... might have chicken broth tonight.. if I feel like it.. protein drinks start Friday I think..
  23. I had a lot of pain too! I missed about a week and a half of work. (Im a nurse). You have a lot of pain, from a foreign object being in your body and whoever told any of us that this is just minor surgery, was mistaken. The other pain that I really experienced, is from the port itself. It because of how it is sewn in place or stapled. You may have port pain off and on for at least a year or so. That is normal.

Starting Below 35 Bmi Success Stories

I'm a newbie (9 days post-op) and had a BMI of 32. I've lost 11 lbs so far, which I think is pretty dang good. I'm excited to lose more but I'm actually ok if I lose slowly...I kinda don't want a ton of attention at work (I work at a high school). My doctor believes that in my first 3 weeks, I should be around 20 lbs, so we'll see...

Do I really have to workout?!?!?

Wow! That is so inspiring! I'm 4.5 weeks post op and I'm just now finally back up to walking 2 miles each morning. I'm planning to start the First Day to 5K podrunner series next week. Looking forward to running the rest of this fat off!
