  1. I was sleeved Oct 2013 & lost 90lbs (gained back 20 lbs) but never got to goal weight or close. I really committed to changing my lifestyle; exercising (running & weight lifting) & used myfitness pal to log food. I felt great & looked great. Then, life unraveled. In 2016 found out my husband of 20yrs was cheating on me, I realized he was an alcoholic & we divorced, I was laid off from my job & then diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. My kids were 10 & 12 at the time & I had no family to help me (both parents deceased & brother lives 3hrs away by plane). I went through 9hr surgery to remove a foot of my colon & then 7 mos of chemo & steroids. I put on 60lbs during chemo & have not been able to lose it. I had a bad fall after last chemo treatment from neuropathy in feet. I have so much pain in my knees I can’t run. Don’t know if all due to excess weight, arthritis (I’m 54), chemo, menopause? I finished my ins requirements for a revision & scheduling revision to bypass is next. But, I am so hard on myself & questioning if it will work and if I shouldn’t be messing with my body especially surviving cancer? I have regained all my weight &depressed. I hate the way I look & struggle with trying to be happy I am alive after cancer. I have heard weight loss is slower after revision. Is that always the case? Anyone else have cancer after wls & regained and had revision? I feel lost. I miss the adrenaline I used to get from working out.
  2. I'm on month number 15 from my sleeve surgery (revised from failed lap-band) and I've done well. I have lost 103 lbs. I've gone from my all time high of 249 down to 146 and i'm 5'1" but... I'm bored with food! I really tend to eat the same things day after day. I have literally eaten this same menu for over a year. The only time i sway is occasionally going out to eat and by that I mean like once a month, and I still only eat about seven bites of whatever it is. I need some new ideas. Here is a list of things I almost always eat. So tell me, what do you eat?? Breakfast (any one of the following) Yoplait light yogurt Quest vanilla Protein bar coffee Egg Beaters 2 pieces of bacon ....Or about every three weeks I will have a Starbucks sugar free, hazlenut, breve, latte. mmmmmm lunch (any one of the following) Lean Cuisine Garlic chicken egg rolls (200 cals) Tyson Chicken Breast salad on 5 crackers (250 cals) Mini Lunchable Tuna Snacks (or could be a meal) 24 Almonds Pictsweet Edamame (my favorite snack of all time! and only 110 calories) Sugar Free Jello Black Olives with Laughing Cow cheese wedge Pickles and cheese stick 100 Cal Smart Pop corn Supper Consists of about five bites of these meats... (always grilled) Chicken Steak Pork Salmon ...and about four bites of veggies. All of the following veggies made with onion and cut up bacon... Green Beans Yellow Squash Okra Asparagus Mixed Veggies Broccoli Cauliflower Armadillo eggs
  3. Hi everyone, I am scheduled for a sleeve revision to sleeve on December 2, 2019. I am 46 years old and have been significantly overweight since I was 20 years when I was pregnant with my daughter. I called this thread 'Weight loss 2.0' because my previous gastric sleeve was December 3, 2013. Looking back, I believed the surgery was the magic fix to all of my problems. At first I had considerable success and dropped 100-120 lbs. Then, life happened - well bad things in life happened. I survived two violent attacks, the first in 2014 which left me with physical challenges, and then in 2015, after a sexual assault, I attempted suicide twice. It took me two years to get to a place of mental stability, but by then I regained my weight, plus more. In 2017, I began discussing with my doctor the prospects of having a revision surgery or bypass. For health reasons, the bypass is not an option. I discussed the options and decided I would not get back on the surgery table until I knew I was truly ready for change. What I have learned though, is that there will never be a moment when I will be truly ready, but it is about making a decision to change my life and working hard to do so. I am very good at self-sabotage and while awaiting my final doctor's visit to schedule surgery, I went over in my head all of the reasons I should and should not have the surgery again. After all, my first sleeve in 2013 was a failure and I stretched my sleeve to 2.5 times its size at surgery. There is a million little things that added up to me regaining weight, but I could not stop wondering if I had the fortitude to stick to it this time. All of the questions and doubts went away when I fell out of my shower two weeks ago yesterday. My spine is fused from C2-T1 and I handed on my back with my head and shoulders against the sink cabinet and the shower curtain rod jammed against the bathroom door. Short of the fire department tearing the door down, I had to find a way off the floor. It was early in the morning and my pride/embarrassment was too much to ask for help. Eventually I painfully got up off the floor. In that moment, I felt there is no reason at 46 years old I should not be able to get off the floor. I went to the emergency room to make sure I did not suffer any real damage and then decided to schedule my final appointment and pick a surgery date. I am teetering through excited and terrified because I have been down this road before. In my gut I know it will be different because I am in a different place and have already made changes to start my journey. To commemorate the start of my pre-op diet, I gave up coffee, sugar, snacks, all at once. For some reason last week, I kept eating things I figured I would never be able to eat again and then went cold turkey starting Monday morning. The lack of coffee and sugar alone makes me feel like crap all the time, but I am keep working at it and already lost 3.5 lbs this week. I had a protein bar today that somehow tasted like a mixture of cardboard and paper mache paste dipped in cocoa powder, which was some sort of scientific miracle that allowed it to be stamped as a food product. But it had 20 g of protein and 3 g of sugar. (definitely will not try that one again). For any other coffee addicts out there, I found that hot tea with dry non-dairy creamer (no sugar) is enough to trick my brain into thinking I had my usual coffee drip. The good news I no longer feel like I am losing my mind. The sugar substitutes are just not my thing. Fortunately, I love water and the many trips to the second floor bathroom have been a kick-start to my exercise regime - that is after many years of couch surfing. I found a 64oz water bottle that has times on one side and inspiration on the other, but I feel like I will start floating soon. I truly never realized how dehydrated I was, probably from the excessive amounts of coffee every day. I am less than 2 weeks away from surgery now and I am grateful that I have a sense of hopefulness, mixed with the reality of knowing that after surgery is when the hard work starts. A part of me is grieving too because I need to give up this life-long terrible relationship with food to live a fuller life. Thanks for reading and happy to be here to share my story. I look forward to learning more about other people here. Mya

sleeve to rny for weight loss?

depends on the insurance. Most will not pay for a revision unless it's medically necessary (e.g., severe GERD, mechanical failure of the original surgery) - although even then some companies will only pay for one surgery per lifetime. You can always call them and ask, though - you never know. if your sleeve is still working, though, you can still lose the weight. You just have to go back to the way you were eating that first year (not necessarily all the way back to protein shakes, but the whole protein first, then non-starchy vegetable thing. Tracking your food. Weighing/measuring things instead of eyeballing portion size. Etc. It usually takes longer the second time around, but people have done it...

sleeve to rny for weight loss?

I had to pay for my sleeve out of pocket (went to Mexico) and now after gaining back 50 pounds in 2.5 years (!) I'm going to get a revision to gastric bypass in early March. For me, I think I had two reasons why I failed - first, I was distrustful of what my surgeon did. I came out of surgery feeling great (unlike everyone else on my floor) and had no problem eating or tolerating different foods when I got to those stages. One of the doctors told me that I had a really long stomach (!) and I wonder if that has allowed me to eat slightly larger portions as a result. I did well in the first 8 months after surgery, I was 100% dedicated to portion control and watched my macros, but I fell off the wagon at my dad's birthday (cake) and slowly but surely over time I was able to consume more, and eat more things I shouldn't have, over time. I knew going into the surgery that I had some food addictions, and unfortunately the last couple of years has taught me that these will be problems for me the rest of my life. There will be no "just once in a while" type of situations - sugar is a huge problem for me, and this next time around I know it will be gone for good - I'm not willing to fail after a second surgery (again, that I will have to pay out of pocket). I don't think anyone can know if your insurance will pay for a second surgery (only your insurance can tell you that), but if not, then I would look at cheaper options for self-pay.

How did you choose your goal weight?

I have revised my goal as I went on. I started with the conservative goal WLS calculators suggested for me based on my highest weight and surgery, which was 160 lbs, then when I hit that, revised to 150 lbs which is the smallest I remember being since puberty, then when I hit that I went to 140 lbs which puts me at a "healthy" BMI, now at nearly 7 months out I've beaten THAT goal, so I'm going with 135, which sits me safely within the healthy BMI range and gives me room for a little regain as can often happen after the honeymoon phase. One thing I DIDN'T do was set a timeline for any of my goals, ie be 160lbs by 4 months out or at my goal weight by 8 months out. So many of the people that do that wind up losing slower than they want and then self-sabotaging. The pace of weight loss is so unpredictable and inconsistent I think putting a deadline on it is setting yourself up for disappointment and failure IMO. As long as I'm following the plan and living a healthy active lifestyle, I'm letting my weight come off at whatever pace it likes. My attitude seems to have worked because I'm losing very steadily!
  7. It's not a guarantee you won't get gerd after getting the sleeve. That being said I also had heartburn at the end stages of both my pregnancies and the occasional heartburn after eating certain foods or overeating right before bed. It never occurred when I was thin so I determined that the cause was the abdominal pressure. I have not had any reflux or heartburn since my surgery, not to say it won't happen in the future but so far so good. Talk to your Dr. in depth about your concerns and ask him/her how many revisions they've had to do because of gerd so you can make the most educated decision you can.

    Port revision

I had a port revision because my port flipped over after 2-1/2 years of no problems. I didn't even know it until my surgeon and her NP began having trouble accessing my port. My surgeon didn't know what could have caused it to flip, partly because she's not the one who did my band placement. She says it could have been a failed suture, or stress on the abdominal fascia during a workout. Anyway, after the revision it stayed put and since she relocated my port deeper (so I no longer had a bulge there) and away from my waist (where it used to rub against my clothes, kitchen counter, etc.) I was happy with the results. I can't comment on the 1% chance of needing a port revision because I'm not a statistician or medical professional, and not inclined to believe statistics anyway (a boss once told me, "figures can lie, and liars can figure"), and can't comment on whether your port is pressing on a nerve (never heard of that), but I've encountered quite a few people whose port flipped. I understand why you're not feeling too swift about this turn of events, but a port revision is not the worst thing that could happen to a WLS patient. Hard as it may be to imagine, a year from now that revision will be a distant memory.
  10. I am on depression medication already, prior to the surgery, and i know will need to go back on it as soon as possible after. Anyone else have experience with this? When I had my band removed in March, I had to gradually step-down my anti-depressants to get them out of my system as much as possible, pre-surgery. That wasn't totally terrible, however, within a month, I had to be back on the medication, I was a big mess. I'm sure losing my band, of which I had lost 78 pounds of the 100 I needed to lose, didn't help. Not being able to revise to a sleeve due to severe erosion also was terrible. So, I had a major compounding of immediate issues, along with the regular "depressive" issues. Ugh. So anyways, anyone with experience in this regard, I would love to hear it. If you feel uncomfortable talking here in the forum, please PM me. Thanks so much!

    MAY 2019 date

Had my sleeve on May 23 and had to go to ER twice over the weekend for pain and dehydration. Now pain almost gone but still get something like esophageal spasms. Driving me crazy and very worried that it won’t go away and that I will have to revise to bypass down the road. Psychologically I am really hurting and questioning this decision. Very anxious.
  15. I am at my goal weight of 175~180. I have to revise to RNY due to intractable GERD. Has anyone else reviewed at their goal weight? What I really want to know is how much weight loss should I expect. If you have revised, how many pounds did you lose. Thanks in advance for your answers!

  18. If 6/10 people banded have complications OR revisions, I don't think doctors would be performing so many... Check the source of that info, it sounds like rubbish.

    Pre-op Diet With Revision?

I did a modified phase 2 south beach diet because I am diabetic. If I wasn't I would have to do phase 1. I was a revision 4/30/13. I did liquids 1 week and now on puréed foods. Everyone's nut is different. I would say watch what you eat so it doesn't bite you in the butt.

    Do You Ever Wish

The malnutrition says with you for life that's why there is such a dedication to vitamin supplements. At least that's what my surgeon says. Also, being currently banded seeking revision, there are not enough long term studies for the band. Best success documented is RNY. But it is a difficult decision to make and knowledge is power.
