Where are all the Michigan people at??
54Shirley replied to Cinnaberry's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Glamourgirl: Check out the Bariatric center at Henry Ford Hospital. The U of M recomended them to me, said they had the Monopoly on this. They are very good. If I had to do it again, I would gladly go back and have my surgeon do it. Chief Surgeon Jeffrey Genaw. Go on line and you can check out their Web site., Google his name and see what you get, also you might be able to get a tape on the surgery Free since you would be considering him. "maybe!!!, don't hold me to that!" Read my journal, and see what he has done for me. Shirley... -
I live in Overland Park and will have it done @ The Bariatric Center Off 435 & Nall. I'm 66 and feel I deserve a healthy, attractive body for the next 10+? years. I understand that the band is a tool, and I'll have responsibility to make it work -- but I'm confident that if so many others can make the life adjustments necessary, I/we can do it too. We deserve a great life. :sifone:

Hello, I am not too far from Sydney at Bundanoon (I'm a tree-changer). Had my op 2 weeks ago at Bowral Bariatric Centre which is a relatively new set-up. I only joined a health fund when I started investigating Banding as an option last September. I am still in the waiting period but decided to go ahead ASAP with the op because of the health probs I have related to obesity. So I am paying for the whole shebang myself. I have been quoted around $12,000. So far I have forked out $5,000 for the hospital stay & $3,500 for follow-up for 2 years with physio & dietician. Just got the anaesthetist bill - $1,000 & yet to get the surgeons bill but I think I can claim part of both of these from Medicare. You can also claim medical expenses on your tax if they are above a certain amount - I think $1,500 but could be totally wrong.

OKAY... so I am very excited b/c I ordered my Body Bugg yesterday so it's on it's way. I have a question though... I was reading a Body Bugg review that says that once your 3 month free subscription to the site is over that the Body Bugg is useless unless you renew your subscription for the site at $200 a month. Please tell me this isn't so b/c I can't spend $200 a month on this. HELP!
-
Hey. I haven't been on in a while. I hardly use my Bugg anymore - seems I have a senstive skin allergy to the metal censors that go against my arm. Anyway, I've made the decision to sell it off to a good home that will love and cherish it the way that I have. The current subscription is good through mid-late Oct, so you would only have to pay for a renewal, not a whole new setup. I don't know about the user name, but I know you can change the password and all the parameters to reflect your weight and your goals and such. I also have the digital display thing. And the spare armband that came with the Bugg when I got it. I have original boxes too. (Unless my puppy chewed them up, he's been into eating cardboard lately!) Just PM me for more info, or if you have questions. I'd like to sell it ASAP. (Don't reply here, I don't check this site as often as I used to.)

A patient died after surgery with Dr. Elias Ortiz at A Lighter Me!
Alex Brecher replied to SuninVirgo's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
There are two Dr. Ortiz's that perform Bariatric surgery in Tijuana. There's Dr. Ariel Ortiz from OCC and there's Dr. Elias Ortiz at A Lighter me. Dr. Elias Ortiz at A Lighter me is the surgeon that had the patient death that this topic is referring to. -
To those who are beyond immediate post-op. Is there anyone here who wishes you had never undergone bariatric surgery?

Hi Ladies & Gents. Things are finaly starting to happen. I seen my Pysc Doc & had my required Physical. Got a pssing grade from them both. I yelled for my wife to come and help me get into the house; before & shortly after I got in the house ; we were still killing them after I got in the house, I was stung about 3 Doz times. Went to the ER just to be on the safe side. Doing just fine now. WOW!! what a month. Now just waiting for that phone call. I'm going to call the Bariatric teem the middle of this week to make sure the "Doc's" sent in the letters to OK my surgery. Until next time, Don

Spring into March 2010 Bandsters
StevieVieth replied to NYSparklegirl's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
First I want to say congrats to finding me for being able to stick with it even tho financial issues became a cross road. Missnell, I had nightmares that I was to "fat" to get it, but im usually one of the smaller individuals at the support groups. I guess I had nightmares because of my worse fear was being told I was too fat. I am under the 200 lbs mark and I am only 6 days post op!!!! I had lost 8 lbs the week before going into surgery. They didnt weigh me till after the surgery and it was at like 3am.... I had just gotten up and used the bathroom and did my little laps around the bariatric wing and they were like good you are up! let me get your weight. This was after they have been pumping me with Iv fluids alllll day and the extra gas from the procedure. so I was 201 when I got there and then I was 202 that night. I was like I have not gained a pound in 13 hours not eating or really drinking anything! The nurse was like its all the extra Water weight from the fluids, and the excess gas in my body! I was like woooooo! GoodLuck to everyone whos procedure is coming up! I go for my 1 week post op on wednesday! -

Date of Surgery: March 17 or March 18 Where Surgery will be: NC Doctor/Center: Dr. Scott Bovard of Bovard Bariatric Center Seminar date: Didn't go to one 1st consult date: Dec 30th, 2009 2nd consult: Haven't had a second one yet. Consults and tests completed: Upper GI, lab work, EKG Tests still needed: Nutritionist and Psych test How is surgery funded? Insurance Concerns? Work, if they will be understanding as to why I will be out for 6 weeks (I'm a CNA and have a very active job) and I can retrain my brain to stop thinking I need to eat all of the time... and to realize that I'm full and that I need to stop. Reason for banding? I'm 22 and 327 pounds... I think that says it all. -
Spring into March 2010 Bandsters

I am not sure about the protein shakes. I have Isopure liquid for my clear liquid days, then I have huge tubs of Isopure powder that my husbands aunt gave me since she is 2 years post op. The are still good till next year. And the ticket price on the tubs is $68.99 so luckily I am saving this money. I know Isopure is not the most appetizing stuff on the market, but I looked up bariatric protein shake recipes and someone said 1/2 c. low fat chocholate sorbet, 1 banana, 1 1/2 TBSP low fat creamy peanut butter, a dash of skim milk, and 1 1/2 scoop creamy vanilla isopure protein powder.. Blend in a blender and no only is it low in calories. but it tastes delicious. I just used plain milk with the isopure powder and it tasted awful. So this is it, count down, in 12 hours I will be at the hospital. I received my phone call confirming what time I have to be at the hosp in the am. 6:30 am. Ugh not looking forward to having to shower tonight and again at 5am. :w00t: -

Hi I am on Long Island as well. Who are you doing the band with?? I had mine done with Dr. Holover with LI bariatric. How are you now?? Hope you are feeling fine and had an easy surgery. -
Hmmm. Well Maybe I can help you. I am 1 week out. Have you all considered maybe changing up your Protein or adding things to it for an extra Oomph? This morning I am having Syntrax's nectar Protein powder in vanilla Bean Torte (1 scoop-23gm), 2 oz of blueberry kefir and 4 oz of milk (9gm protein). It will take me about 30 minutes to drink all 6 oz since it is thicker than Water. Do you all think the problem is taste? or capacity? If it is capacity and you all are far enough out try this test to see exactly how much you can handle. Don't worry it is considered a legitimate bariatric test...http://www.bsciresourcecenter.com/proddetail.php?prod=A4

“The Biggest Loser:” Irresponsible Weight Loss Surgery Comments?
Alex Brecher replied to Alex Brecher's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Magazine
"Does it really matter what a reality television show says in passing about weight loss surgery? I believe it does. For one thing, the country already has a culture that largely views bariatric surgery negatively. We don’t need to increase the negative feelings with these vague statements proclaiming that the show helps contestants lose weight the “right” way, and other methods of weight loss are “wrong.” Second, the show has millions of loyal viewers, including many who may be eligible for weight loss surgery. In my opinion, the show is doing them a disservice by stating unequivocally that bariatric surgery is a bad option. For some of these viewers, bariatric surgery may be the only option that would allow them to lose the weight that has plagued them their entire lives." PS: I wear boxer briefs -
I follow him on FB. Asked him about why bariatric pre and post-op diets are so heavy with animal fat and protein, and what physiological benefits that has. He actually answered me. "None. No benefit. Just baseless dogma." His new book Proteinaholic arrives tomorrow and I can't wait to read it!

Considering a lap band - scared after reading this forum!
labwalker replied to Elrix's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Anyone who claims to be living a band nightmare for nine years either picked the surgeon based on price or never did the requisite follow up visits. I see my doctor every four months and I can assure you no reputable bariatric surgeon would allow a patient to suffer for nine years. 90% of the band haters had a procedure under insurance that wouldn't cover follow up visits, adjustments or in rare instances medically necessary removals....or lived with a maladjusted band until their health was affected. If you have the band chose the best doctor and heed their advice. Bands are not place and forget procedures. I know people who are having problems with sleeve and bypass surgery. It happens. My band works, and all I know is it controls my appetite with zero side effects. -
Considering a lap band - scared after reading this forum!
LaLaDee replied to Elrix's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Check out this article: https://www.bariatricpal.com/magazine/622-types-of-bariatric-surgery-by-the-numbers-and-what-it-means/ Lap bands work for some people and I don't see the point of attacking individuals who have had great success. That said, there is a big chance of complications with the band. I live in Australia, where there were an insanely high rate of lap bands performed and now they are out of favour. Interestingly, if people are looking for a non-permanent, less invasive strategy they are getting the balloons. I think we'll see a growth in that. I wanted a lap band and my surgeon was like no. He has performed thousands of WLSs and basically won't do them anymore. Apparently, he constantly does revisions from the lap band to VGS or bypass. His view is that the lap band doesn't work long term for most people. There's no correct answer but make sure you get medical advice and are comfortable with your decision. -
Hi Bronnie, For the shoulder tip pain just walk, walk, and walk around to dispel it. It will stay for a few days. As for the stockings the hospital told me I had to wear them for two weeks, but four days in they were cutting into my legs, leaving a huge welt and hurting me. I rang the Bariatric centre's nurse and she told me if they were cutting in to me that was defeating the purpose of them, and to take them off. I had no history of DVT, so It was fine to stop wearing them. Check with your surgeon's office. For pain relief I had soluable panadeine rapid. The first few days are painful and it gets better from there. As for a fill, they don't ususally do one before 5-6 weeks, as they wait for post op swelling etc to go down, and they have to examine/assess you first. Glad your banded! Susannah

Spring into March 2010 Bandsters

Hello all, Figured that I would log in and say hello. How is everyone doing? I have a terrible cold and every time I cough or sneeze, I am holding my stomach! After reading all of the posts of slipped bands, I have been driving myself crazy. I understand the likelyhood is very slim, but.... I had my first fill a week ago (2.5cc in a 10cc band), but unfortunately no restriction. I do have the feeling of being full until my next meal though, and that is a big plus. I get a full feeling about 45 minutes later. I am deffinitly eating a bit too quickly and not chewing as well as I should - this is something I have to keep on working at. I have been eating about a cup of food 3 times a day - sometimes with a small snack. My Protein levels have been great, but I still have to incorporate more veggies and fruit into my diet. My calorie count has been steady around 1100-1200 daily. Been walking 45 minutes 4-5 times a week. It is getting MUCH easier, and I am really begining to enjoy it! I had to switch my Vitamins from the Bariatric Advantage multi and a second for Calcium because I just couldn't stomach the taste. I am now taking 2 flintstones complete and 2 viactive calcium. Not the calcium type that is absorbed as well, but at least I am not gagging on it twice a day! Hiccups anyone? My next fill isn't until May 24th. Really hoping it will help. How is everyone's clothing fitting (or rather NOT fitting?). Down from a 32 to a 28. I am very excited. Post everyone - want to hear both the good and bad - we are all here to support each other! Just did it! Renewed my subscription! Ready to start using it again!

Thank you! Another quick question--did you tell your coach that you had lap band? Since I read in a previous post to no check bariatric surgery, I didn't-so I could continue to set up my bugg. But does that affect your coach and how they help? Amy

renewed that sounds good to me!!!

I'll be going to the new TMC tower for surgery. Dr Monash helped design the bariatric surgery center there. Not too nervous yet, but once the actual date is set, then the nerves will probably kick in. Thank you, I will probably make a pest of myself LOL

September 2009 Band Date
travel replied to ashleysara's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Spreadsheet additions These can add a bit much, but are what I am curious about- BMI Height waist measurement The waist measurement since one recommendation is to have a waist less than 35 inches. Less abdominal fat sounds good. I wonder how practical it is for WLS? Height- which height do you go by? I thought of myself as 5'8", the bariatric center has me as 5'7". So I use 5'7", and now think of myself as 5'7.5"!
