  1. I am down 71 Lbs since my surgery on January 27th. Unfortunately, I am still not able to really tolerate or eat solids without experiencing pain which has limited altogether what I eat or eat at all. My doctor suggested I meet with the nutritionist, who simply suggested "smaller portions". Even though portions had never really been the issue. So now I have to have an EGD done to make sure everything looks okay. They said it could be built up scar tissue that is irritating my stomach. I have been told that it can take longer for some to heal than others but my doctor said after 3 months, I should be able to handle some sort of solid protein by now. Anyone else experienced this? Fingers-crossed I get some answers and it's nothing major.

My hell week starts tomorrow (April 26th)

This part of the journey can be really hard. Try focusing on the reward at the end. What really helped me also, was burying myself in Instagram stories of bariatric patients' progress photos and with those who have reached their goals. Their pictures are truly incredible, and so inspiring. I also agree with Bariatric Hero, try completing a shake first, then take your medications. Hopefully that will help. You got this! You are doing great! 🙂 Is your surgery Monday 5/2? In all honesty, I may have sucked on a french fry from my kid's happy meal. Not one of my proudest moments. I kept repeating to myself during my week pre-op liquid diet..... "I'm shrinking my liver. I'm shrinking my liver. I'm shrinking my liver."

    weight gain after surgery

Scales are crazy making tools of the devil. Cast them out. I am so glad (for a quixotic definition of glad) that pre-op and for at least the first year post-op that I was too large for a home scale. I could only weigh at monthly at follow-ups. As a result, I never saw the stalls that I inevitably experienced. I also noted that my Doc never talked about my weight loss unless I brought it up. He was concerned with how I was doing on the plan, how my health was, my mental attitude, or whatever I wanted to talk about. Once I was able to weigh at home I weighed myself 2-4 times a day for a couple weeks, mostly for the novelty of weighing on a home scale. After that, I just went back to weighing only at follow-ups. All these years later I don't weigh at home, but only at my annual physicals. I can tell by how I feel or how my clothes feel if I need to adjust anything, but honestly don't worry about my weight otherwise. All this to say that especially early on you don't need a scale. Follow your plan and it will work for you. Good luck, Tek

    Recent Injury Rant

honestly, weight loss is about 90% food and only 10% exercise. I know WLS patients who lost a ton of weight even without exercise. That said, exercise is great for your overall health and people should do it - but an injury that causes a temporary pause in your routine is not going to be the end of your weight loss. also, you could be in a stall - they're very common. Just stick to your program and your weight loss will eventually start up again. Stalls usually last 1-3 weeks. and no, I doubt "this is it" as long as you're adhering to your program. Most of us lose for a year - if not more (20 months for me - but I started out much heavier than you, so I had a lot more to lose)

    Constipation after gastric sleeve surgery

very common with both sleeve and bypass. And just as a heads up, chronic constipation (even after the first BM) is pretty common, too. the first BM can take up to a week and can be a real doozy, so we were advised to take stool softeners. after that one, a lot of us take a capful of Miralax every day to stay on top of constipation - although others take stool softeners, probiotics, SmoothMove tea, or magnesium tablets. Whatever works...
  6. At the end of day 5 of the two week program. Mostly it been okay just a few headaches. Right now I have another serious nausea attack. Took a pill for the nausea. I really hope that it kicks in sooner rather than later.

My hell week starts tomorrow (April 26th)

I’m alright. Minus the tension headache. I’m out of caffeine withdrawal (did that last week before the LRD) so I think my body is just mad 😡 🤷🏼‍♀️

4 Weeks Out - Eating is a chore

I recall feeling this way during the 6 weeks of puree and another month or two with real food. Just had to pay attention to the mechanics of relearning to eat that the actual food was secondary to the process. Once the mechanics became normal eating was more enjoyable. All these years later I still go through periods when i'm fatigued, stressed, focused elsewhere, or in pain where eating is a chore, but this I think is more about the joy of being me than anything else. Good luck, Tek

    You are all my buddies

@GradyCat @possum220 @ toggletrue thank you for the support and encouragement. I get so much out of this app. I appreciate sharing their journey. I found out from my doctor’s office that I may need to be out from work for 2-3 weeks. My boss said that I could work from home.

My hell week starts tomorrow (April 26th)

Ok, so day 3 is a wrap, and I'm still struggling, although i was surprised to see I've lost 5 pounds in 3 days on this liquid diet, so that kind of helped my motivation lol I know this isn't necessarily for weight loss per se, but it's at least a nice perk. I'm really just having issues when I have to take my pills. They require food, and even when I take them with milk and/or milkshakes, my stomach still gets really upset. This worries me when the surgery is over and I can only have clear liquids for 2 weeks. I'm really nervous about how sick my stomach will get.

    Sleeve Leak?

No leaking for me either. Neither did my three who also had a sleeve. I didn’t have a liquid test to test for a leak either. They can occur anywhere between the first days or up to a few weeks after surgery - I guess until you are fully healed. They are not very common. Surgeons tend to staple & stitch to decrease the risk of a post surgical leak. You can do things to help avoid a leak too. Follow your eating plan (nutrition & not stressing or straining your healing tummy), don’t carry anything too heavy (<10lbs to begin), don’t be too active too soon (gentle walking at first). If you have any symptoms go to your nearest hospital & contact your surgeon as soon as possible. All the best with your surgery.

    Sleeve Leak?

Just curious if anyone who has had the sleeve if they experienced their sleeve leaking post op?? I have not had surgery yet, its next week Tues (May 3rd). I had my appt today with my surgeon and I know its just to inform me of what could happen with risks of the surgery but when she was going in to detail of the steps needed if a leak is found or happens. It made me take a step back and I said whoa! Im sure its my mind messing with me since Im only 5 days away from surgery date. But I dont recall of anyone in here mentioning having a leak. Maybe the statistics are low but it sure does make you say hmmm?

    Incision area discolored. (Picture)

Looks normal (and fresh). My incisions turned yellowish green too. So long as there's no discharge, swelling or fever you're likely fine. Good to check with your doctor too. Here's what mine looked like one week post op. Sent from my SM-G975U using BariatricPal mobile app

Eating carbs (pasta, rice, or bread )

I'm almost 3 months out and I've been eating carbs since my puree phase (had beans then). I do everything in moderation, eat my protein first and enjoy carbs on the side. I've lost 42 lbs since my surgery. Carbs aren't the enemy, eating too much is. Of course we have limited room as weight loss surgery peeps so I understand the need for protein first but if your dietician okays it and you can stand it, go for it. I do best with Chickpea pasta, wild/brown rice and potatoes. You can chew them up really well so they go down easy. I've had the low carb tortillas but they get "stuck" most of the time so I avoid them. Haven't had bread/toast/flour/corn tortillas yet because I was told to wait 6 months for bread products. 4 Weeks Out - Eating is a chore

I felt this a lot early on, except that I was hungry. eating was hard and nothing tasted good. After a few months (I think by month 3-4) I started being able to enjoy food again. I am 7.5 months out and I still find that things like ground meat (think chili or hamburgers minus the buns) or fish/seafood works better for me than chicken breast or steak, but I'm getting better at eating cuts of meat. I find that food needs to have a sauce on it, especially if it's going to be reheated. I'll use cheese sauces, fat free greek yogurt, refried beans, salad dressing, mayo, etc as sauce. Tomato sauce would probably work, but I don't like it. It does get better!

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

@Spinoza @gmast99 I am right there with you two, in a stall 😂 This month was slow to begin with and now have stalled for the last 2 weeks bouncing up and down between 158 and 159 😒 Seems like there is a thing called 5th or 6th stall 😂😂 It's very similar to the 3 week one majority of us have had right after the surgery. Just waiting now for the damn scale to move and get the downward spiral to kick start yet again.

    SO FLIPPING COLD!

I travel for work, so I'm in a different office/desk every week, sometimes every few days. If I can't easily pack it in carry on, I can't use it, unfortunately.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Things here are going really well. I can eat whatever I want but only a little. I am tolerating sugars and fats better. Veggies and fruit are still the safest to eat. I have been stalled for a month which is fine. Still not down to the 190s yet. But I feel great and I look good. My friends and coworkers tell me that I am still losing weight just the scale is slow to catch up. I am definitely still losing inches. I am using a ton of lotion trying to keep my skin as hydrated as possible and hoping it will not look to flabby when all is said and done. My scars are still very visible but there is not much that can be done about that. Still no regrets.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Oh I went looking for our thread and I can't believe it was on PAGE 3!!! Outrageous! Updates please? I'm doing well - have hit a bit of a stall for the last two weeks but I had one coming. Hoping to see the scales move again soon - I have more to lose! Feeling great, walking really fast these days for exercise and actually broke into a trot a few times recently - do you think I could run again? I would SO love that - I told my surgeon that when he asked what my main goal for WLS was. Edited to add - and it sounded completely ridiculous then, but not so much now...

    Recent Injury Rant

Aw that's such bad luck to hit a totally unrelated setback when you were doing so well! You're absolutely entitled to a bit of a wallow. You know this isn't the end though, just a blip. Upper body workouts for the next couple of weeks? I hope you recover really soon.

Alcohol 3 weeks post sleeve op.

I asked my dietician about alcohol and she said a glass or two of champagne during the winter holidays was fine - I was 5.5 weeks post op by then. It did hit me harder and wear off quicker than before. I've had wine most weekends since then - one or two glasses. I'm certain it must have slowed my weight loss because there are calories in it, but I accept that because I really like wine. I hope you got some answers that were helpful OP!
  24. I am 8 weeks post op. I was sleeved on 3/1/22 and everything has been going great until last weekend when I tripped on the stairs and sliced my big toe open. Now I’m sitting around the house with a bandaged toe and a boot for outside. I’m so bummed because I had just gotten into a good workout routine. Although I am still hitting my protein and water goals I noticed right away that I was consuming more calories. I feel bloated and just all around blah. I convinced myself yesterday that this is where my weight loss stops and I just need to find happiness in where I am at now. My starting weight was 266 and I now weigh 222.6 lbs. All in my feels today….
  25. Hi: New to this site, thanks for any imput. I am fighting the post op blues still and I am learning what I can and can't eat, soft food wise. I am experiencing sort of a wave of nausea when something hits my stomach, it usually goes away, except once when I didn't chew enough, then it came back. Anyone experience this? Anyway I sort of dread eating now, and I had a really hard time even getting near the 500-700 calories a day my doctor recommended. (I'm sure this has been asked many, many times before) But will I ever enjoy eating again? I'm not hungry but it is difficult to see others eat things I use to love, and this adds to my feelings of depression and regret. I'm sure this will change but it would help to hear from others. Thanks!
