How are you doing on the "emotional" side of being skinny?
ProudGrammy replied to CowgirlJane's topic in WLS Veteran's Forum
i understand she wants to lose 20 lbs - but you can't blame yourself about her gaining she continues to do everything amazing, from eating to exercise - don't know what the problem is that she can't lose - she just has to continue with all the right stuff i agree seeing the doc might help - BUT if that weight doesn't come off......don't blame yourself your wife continues to be your big supporter just continue to be supportive to her, like she always was/is to you don't "not get excited" (terrible sentence)about your weight loss, and don't keep your success to yourself weight was always an issue with my mom my whole family was "normal" size - except me. mom ALWAYS "reminded" me that i needed to lose weight. as a teen-ager, instead of a b'day cake - i always would get a candle on a weight watchers cupcake through out all my years up and down with my weight, i finally have lost 103 lbs post WLS - with the "assistance" of the sleeve - but of course i know "I" did the hard work to lose the weight, i know i "will" be successful keeping my weight off i feel guilty about my daughters weight gain all the time while i was heavy - i "cried on my daughters shoulders" in other words just told her how upset i was about my weight.-it was a constant discussion about ME, not her weight which was fine so the cycle continued about weight being such an important subject since the birth of her 3 kids (12,9,4) she kept gaining to the present point - i know she want to lose the weight, but we all know hard it is - trust me i NEVER bring up her weight (she needs to lose about 75 lbs) i also blame myself for her weight gain, since weight, weight, weight was such a subject for me (and for her to listen to me) but............. now that i've lost 100 lbs, i don't think its right either to celebrate my victories with daughter not wanting to talk much about my weight loss with daughter i think i'm kindof the pot calling the kettle black i know i "should" embrace my success with my daughter, but its hard and i DO feel guilty, sad that at 38 she is now getting heavy when i was her age emotions, feelings - we all have them, and they can be hard to deal with congratulations Butterthebean on your weight loss, I can't fathom "seeing" 172 lbs gone!!! goal here you come!!! -
What was your turning point?
ahoy replied to samantha209's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I gained all my weight quickly, thanks to a rare and horrible side effect of depo provera, the 3-month-lasting birth control shot. Sure, my lifestyle contributed, but I went from being a totally healthy size 8/10 to being a size 26 in a year and a half. I've struggled to lose that weight ever since, but I just didn't have it in me. I went thru a period of radical acceptance (and embracing) of reality, and myself, and learning to love myself, so the weight hasn't made me feel *bad* about myself for a long time. I figured that if I didn't force it, when I was ready, I'd work up the dedication to do it, but the guilting wasn't going to work. I never did, though, and now it's 11 years after the weight gain. (I was 16; now I just turned 27.) This year has been a big one for accepting my needs & limitations, and one of the big ones has been "I'll never be able to lose 120lbs on my own... and that's okay, because I'm not superwoman." The turning point was when I developed chronic fatigue syndrome/fibromyalgia after I came down with mono in July 2009, and my life has been one hellish rollercoaster ever since. Most days I am too sick or tired to exercise, and if I do, I suffer for DAYS afterwards. Since April, when I discovered that it is CFS/FMS that I have, I've been able to start treatments that really help. But I still am much lower energy than a normal person and my muscles are easily "damaged." I can pinpoint exactly when I decided to have surgery: I have chronic sinusitis, and because of the CFS, my body just won't fight back, so my sinus cavities are almost swollen shut. As you might imagine, that's no way to go thru life! So I saw a great surgeon for it, and he looked at me and said, "I can operate on your sinuses, but unless you lose a lot of weight, you're going to be back here in 2 years." He told me about one of his nurses who had the lapband done -- like me, she had recurring pneumonia and sinus infections and so on, and losing the weight cured her. So i started researching. That led me to the sleeve. That was October of 2010, and as of today I'm 1 week out from having the gastric sleeve done. I hope he was right! -

2 Weeks Post Off Stall And An Alcohol Question
Ms skinniness replied to utopianaurora's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't give up on yourself. If your hungry all the time, it may be that you have alot of acid in your stomach. Check with you surgeon to see if you can take a PPI (prilosec). I was always hungry and I started taking prilosec and I'm not hungry anymore. How many calories are you consuming on your liquid diet? Are you getting enough protein? Are you exercising at all, like walking? Have you lost inches? Hang in there, it will happen..... Kaiser educated on the dangers of drinking of alcohol. Some weight loss patients have died from drinking alcohol. How manydrinks they had, I don't really know. Also, alcohol can contribute to weight gain. -

So have you looked at what you have done differently that created the weight gain? I'd love to help, but it's you that needs to make the choices and the changes. Or, could you possibly need a fill? Are you eating around the band? A little more information would really be great so I can help you help yourself through this. OK? -
Back and Forth, Very Nervous
Hop_Scotch replied to xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First thing - you may want to change your user name - having your email address as a user name will likely result in a lot more spam due to the email bot finders. So to the advice from people around you - I am assuming they are not medical or health specialists? They may be well meaning and while some family members may be concerned about possible medical complications are more likely to be concerned about the change in the status quo. You are likely to lose the weight that is required for health and maintain that loss long term? If so, you may not need the surgery. But if like most of us, you can lose some weight (not likely all that was needed) and are not able to maintain that weight loss beyond the short term, you will greatly benefit from weight loss surgery. Your medical team believes you are a good fit for the surgery and believes there is a need for it, you had reasons for looking at weight loss surgery - are those still valid? If you don't do the surgery where will you be a year from now? More weight gain - more medical issues? -
At the beginning of COVID, I got sick with a respiratory/shortness of breath/fatigue/fever problem. Thought for sure it was COVID, but two antibody tests have been negative. Anyway, it knocked the socks off me for a couple of months, actually, and I dropped off my exercise. Until then I was doing a lot of things, including 60 flights of stair a day, weights, walking, biking, and swimming. Needless to say, I gained about 7 pounds. But I am happy to report that today I got back to my goal weight and I am sooooo happy about that. I have been increasing my exercise a bit, now with cooler weather (still 95, but feels heavenly after 115!) , and have monitored my carbs and nuts a bit closer. I am still doing IF, which I think is a great tool. And I have found that exercising in a fasting state not only makes me feel better DURING the exercise, but great afterwards, too. I did a 20 mile bike ride the other day in a fasting state and it was one of the best rides I have ever had. Maybe it's ketosis euphoria, but it sure felt good and like I could have gone another 20. The longer I get out from surgery, the more "normal" my eating becomes, and I am gradually learning what I have to do to feel strong, maintain the weight, and not get stressed out over it. The key with weight gain is to nip it in the bud. Don't let it get to 10 pounds - drop it dead in its tracks before it gets that far down the road. Regain does not happen overnight. It actually comes on gradually unless you just stop weighing yourself, start pigging out on unhealthy food, and just go into denial about the whole thing. I used to have nightmares about waking up and finding myself having regained all my weight. AAGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! But it doesn't happen that way. Weighing daily, and jumping back on track when only a few pounds up is the way to keep it off for good, I am convinced. I don't stress about it any more, because I know this is actually do-able! I will have to keep watching carefully as I move toward the 2 and 3 year marks. Hang in there, everyone. Knock it out of the park! Keep with your plans, get your exercise in, and enjoy your new lives!!!!!

Totally frustrated and don't know what to do
yoyolifechange11 replied to yoyolifechange11's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Yes, that's exactly what he thinks. He thinks he's given me all the necessary time to devote to getting myself in shape, so he doesn't understand why it's not my #1 priority in life. Getting in shape and looking good so I don't want to hide in the house all the time is "putting my marriage and him first". He views my whole weight gain as me not loving him enough to want to look good for him, to put us back on the path of an intimate relationship, etc. I understand that, but I've resisted doing anything "for him" because of the tough love approach he has taken as his way of "encouraging me". I would get a job, but I want the weight gone first. We have enough money that I can have the surgery, and I even have my own money with an advisor, I just hate doing this behind his back. And once I do it, I doubt he will respect me not wanting the world to know. He's all about having integrity and being honest. Ugh I can't stop crying about all this -
If you weren't obese "all" of your life, what is it that caused you to become obese ?
My Bariatric Life replied to My Bariatric Life's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
@@Keeper I always knew that I was a carb addict. But it was not until I did the Whole 30 program this Spring that I realized I am a sugar addict. And as you probably know, carbs turn to sugar in the body, so by strictly managing my sugar intake I was able to control -- control by a lot -- my hunger, and therefore achieve weight loss. I follow a Paleo diet now and have learned to listen to my bidy and understand hunger queses. What I have learned is that even something as begnine and good for you as roasted coconut juice will trigger the sugar craving / hunger game. Nor can I eat gluten free foods. Even one wrap a day over the course of only a few days shows up as a several pound weight gain for me. So the solution for me was to follow Paleo. It really is nice not to be hungry constantly! -
4 years post op and can’t lose a pound
MarinaGirl replied to BriWLS's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have Hashimoto’s that is well controlled. My endocrinologist says that too many people blame hypothyroidism for causing weight gain or hindering weight loss. He says the #1 factor with his healthiest/normal BMI patients are that they all walk everyday, more than the average adult. Not crazy miles but consistently everyday. You do not need to go back to a liquid diet to jump start your weight loss. That is crash diet mentality. The post-op diet was necessary to heal your stomach and prevent staple leaks. Now you need to eat fewer calories and focus on dense protein to fill yourself up. -
HELP - I NEED YOUR ADVICE !!!! I just got denied for surgery because of my doctor's notes (insurance only good for another 100 days)
marketingdude replied to marketingdude's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Thanks for responding Corize. Part of the policy for approval is that YOU MUST ADHERE TO BEHAVIORAL MODIFICATIONS AND ADHERE TO THE DOCTORS DIETARY PROGRAM. SO THEY WON'T ACCEPT MY DOCTORS RESPONSE. THE ONLY WAY THEY WILL ACCEPT THIS IS IF HE CLARIFIES WHAT HE WROTE AND HE WRITES THAT HE DID NOT MEAN TO SAY I DIDN'T ADHERE TO THE WHOLE DIETARY PROGRAM AND BEHAVIORAL MODIFICATION PROGRAM. At least...this is what it seems...that the only way they will cover it now. I am getting my doctor records from 2005-2009 from my other doctor to show my weight then and how I was stressed ect...and my foot doctor records to show how this increase in weight gain even now effects the arches in my foot which causes even more pain and stress. -
removal of the lapband
Beachy_Babs replied to imdeelightful's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First of all, let me just say what an amazing job you did to lose that 125 lbs. Way to go! That is so awesome As for getting your lapband removed, I honestly think it is your decision to make, BUT a second opinion from different doctors could help you decide. I personally have never even thought about removing my band because it took alot for me to even get it in the first place. As some people have stated in the above comments, weight gain is a possibility, but if you truly think you have full control of your eating habits and new lifestyle changes, then do what makes you happy In the end...negative comments or positive, you come first in your own happiness. Wish you the best of luck with whatever you choose! -

@@IcanMakeit @amponder @pink dahlia we have similar stories. I was not quite as active as you in high school. but I absolutely swam and worked out. Then I got into a car accident and could not exercise. And I got depressed so I ate too many carbs. I gained 30 pounds by my wedding. Then came pregnancy and another 60 pound weight gain. And I gained more and more from awful eating habits. It was like being in quicksand and sinking more and more. I was over my head and opted for gastric bypass as a last resort. It saved my life. -
Just ate a Wendy's cheeseburger!
SeriouslyChange replied to fancynancy's topic in Food and Nutrition
I'm not condemning the cheeseburger, but I'm just saying: why get sleeved in what I am assuming is January only to consume a 300-500 calorie burger in one sitting? Why would you just not eat 1/3 or even 1/2. I'm not perfect, I drink juice, eat ice cream, munch on crackers I eat Cheetos, and have had Chinese food. But I also limit myself to just a taste. I'm 100+ pounds lighter and I will never allow myself to eat my way back up the scale. Call me scared of weight gain if you must The sleeve is a lifestyle change. It alone will not make you thin. You also must change your thoughts and approach to food. It is hard, but that's part of the journey. -
I’m in Boca Raton and some people in this area speak highly of Dr. Shillingford. He didn’t work out for me but they offer a flat rate all inclusive package that covers everything for gastric sleeve at $10,500. I had a hard time with my insurance due to not meeting their comorbidities even though I have plenty of medical problems. I have metabolic disorders, insulin resistance, bone and joint problems, I couldn’t prove my sleep apnea, (the list is long) I fought my weight gain so hard but In the end I ended up qualifying based on BMI, though no one ever told me exactly what qualified me. After a long fight they finally did. What made things work better was when an endocrinologist referred me to Cleveland Clinic, and I already had record of my weight loss efforts with her and my general practitioner for months. The endocrinologist and surgeon wrote letters for my insurance as well. I was referred to Cleveland clinic because the process is not as complicated. It’s hard for me to travel but I don’t think it would have happened without my dr at Cleveland Clinic. BariatricPal actually has a surgery center in Mexico if you can travel. Compared to Dr. Shillingford, sleeve is $4,900 flat rate all inclusive in a highly rated facility. If I could possibly even consider it at some point, I would go there for dealing with excess skin. It looks like an excellent hospital that’s an affordable option for self pay. https://bariatricpalhospitalmx.com/weight-loss-surgeries/

Drinking Alcohol... It's not worth it!
LipstickLady replied to Darianna75's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Stalls? Massive weight gain? Huh. Glad my doctor didn't install those extra features into my sleeve. The couple of times I've imbibed heavily, I've "gained" 3-4 pounds over a weekend only to lose them by Tuesday. Just go back to plan and drink water. I don't recommend heavy drinking regularly, but an occasional shindig won't hurt you. -
Twelve Weeks Pregnant, Four Months Post Op
BeautiifulEvolution posted a topic in Pregnancy with Weight Loss Surgery
That's correct, Pregnant not even 2 months after surgery. I see some threads but I'd just like an update of anyone that is going through this or went through it already... I was 300 pounds at my highest weight, now down to 240. I'm not even concerned as much about the weight gain as I am for my baby. I know this wasn't planned, but I'm already in love with my little pumpkin. The doctor that I saw at my nuchal screening told me that my weight and the fact that I became pregnant so soon after surgery makes me high risk, emphasizing preeclampsia, gestational diabetes and internal herniation. It's just all so much. I'm 25 and this is my first baby so anyone that can weigh in at all is appreciated. I've had terrible all day sickness and scared about nutrition and everything... -
December 2015 or January 2016 sleevers ?
dietbelle replied to neequa25's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What you have is Hashimotos disease it causes weight gain! Once on your mess your weight will decrease because your levels will normalize. Your thyroid manages your other organs so it's very important on how the body works. I would say about 4 weeks but keep having bloods tested as your meds may have to me adjusted. I have had Hashimotos for 25 years. Even after your op you may still have to take meds. It's an immune thing. I take 200 but if you're only on 50 maybe once your weight is off you may not need it. I also read but it could be wrong as it was a dr on the Internet! lol That the majority of immune sufferers have a lot going on in the gut once this is cut off the problems i.e. Hashimotos goes with it.. I hope so Good luck stay focused its only another 4 weeks or so and be deluge the with your meds empty stomach 1st thing in the money .. -

GP says to do Weight Watchers instead
careya123 replied to careya123's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
My main problem is that I eat too much at every meal. I'm not an emotional eater, but I am a celebratory eater. However, celebrations don't happen every day so I don't think that's a big problem for me. I was raised with a lot of brothers, and eating was a competitive sport. I ate as much as possible as quickly as possible, because I knew there wouldn't be any later. I haven't been able to break that habit. That's why I think the sleeve will work for me: it will limit how much I can eat at any one time. Oddly enough, I think my biggest caloric "sin" is milk. I drink a lot of it every day, and that's a lot of calories. I am cutting back there. I do love ice cream and baked treats, but I don't eat it every day. I don't especially like fast food, fried foods, chips, crackers, etc. I actually have a pretty good diet. I eat more fruits and veggies than most. What really bothers me about my GP's comments is that he's never even asked me about my diet. And, ironically, most of my weight gain can be attributed to medications I've taken, one of which was prescribed by him. So for him to tell me to get my eating under control leaves me in a state of disbelief. -
Just keep your chin up think positive and put the weight gain behind you, as you are now moving forward and think positve about this new healthy lifestyle that you will soon be having:)

Everyone on this sight has gone through weight gain and not feeling motivated. That is how we landed here in the first place. Good luck, I hope your back feels better and keep on keeping on! -
Ya. My skinny friends all diet every day. - they watch everything they eat. Exercise. Drink juice cleanses. Do protein shakes and bars. Only indulge once in a blu moon if at all. Their diet is their lifestyle. And even though they have only needed to lose after baby weight gain- they live by the newest diets and exercise craze ( right now it’s peleton) - WW, Atkins , whole food—. They have done them all. They are just way better at dieting then I was! I consider myself on a diet. Because that’s what it is. So true about ‘mindset’ code word for making good choices. The newest code word is ‘grit’ - for not giving up. Whatever works works. Obviously we are trying to make good choices to that our life changes - hence lifestyle changes. - and dieting gives structure which for me helps with making the right choice or only choice. Good evening, everyone! I am a 21 year-old with a BMI of 38 and hoping to get the lap band surgery sometime in the near future. I have tons and tons of questions and I have heard that this board is incredibly helpful so here they are! Firstly, my husband and I don't have insurance yet. He changed jobs which caused us to not have insurance for a couple of months. Our new insurance is going to kick in as of June 1, 2007 and this is when I'm going to start my journey of trying to get approved for the surgery. I don't even know if our insurance covers any of it but I am hopeful and I still want to get as much research as possible within me. We are going to have UHC so my guess some of it could be covered but who knows, I will find out in June once we get our cards, info packets, etc. etc. Anywho, here are my questions.... 1) It's been a little over a year since I've had a pap smear. I'm going to go once our insurance kicks in and I'm going to let my doctor know that I haven't had a period in 7 months and that I am interested in having a weight loss surgery. I'm very sure it's due to my recent weight gain, do you think she would be willing to write a letter of recommendation to the insurance company that the reason for surgery is a health issue? 2) How will I know what other procedures I need to get done before being considered for the surgery? Does the insurance company tell me this or the surgeon? 3)After that, do I just call up my surgeon (I'm wanting to go to Dr. Spivak in Houston, TX) and say "Hey! I'm interested in getting the lap band surgery!" and do they just guide me from there? 4)Is it possible to lose weight w/ out fills or are they necessary? ...Grr, that's all I can think of as of right now. I took a shower earlier and I swear that I had questions coming out of my ears! Anyway, thanks in advance for all of your help!
